    As counter-intuitive as it sounds Messi has been more global. Club football is probably less popular than international football in Asia and Africa (where 75% of world's population live). E.g. WC final viewers = 1.6 billion people but UCL final viewers= only 400 million people. People in here (Asia) were sad when Messi lost 2014 WC final and had their fairy tail ending when Messi won 2022 WC (and Ronaldo didn't do anything meaningful in WCs). Brazil and Argentina are also very influential here (like Madrid and Barca in Europe) so much so that there were discussion to increase political bond between Bangladesh (8th most populated country) and Argentina because Bangladesh crazily supported Argentina which went viral in Argentina and in return Argentina supported Bangladesh cricket team. Ronaldo's superior social media stats can be explained by his 4 times as many internet posts as Messi (and probably a minor reason he is often semi-nude and handsome which probably attracts more female fans. Sex sells, I guess). But Messi actually has the most liked post (WC winning photo) in any social media. People in the internet thinking Ronaldo is more popular is the same as Americans thinking Micheal Jordan is the most popular Athlete ever or Indians thinking Sachin Tendulkar is the most popular.

    • @Sportonomics_
      @Sportonomics_ 6 месяцев назад

      You make several great points! Messi's success on the world stage has only added to his brand image and gained him more fans. do you think if Ronaldo was to perform well and Portugal were to win the Euros again this would have much of an effect or would it need to be at the WC?

    • @paularthur3467
      @paularthur3467 6 месяцев назад

      I get what you’re saying but Ronaldo is far closer to Messi than Jordan or Tendulkar on a global level. I think to view the other two as the biggest in the world is very blinkered, I’d listen to an argument that said Ronaldo was.

    • @mdreazhosen5
      @mdreazhosen5 6 месяцев назад

      @@Sportonomics_ I would rather watch an exciting T20 cricket game at daytime instead of an UCL or Euro game at 1 am (most people sleep at night). When western part of the world is day and people in there are watching a live football match, Eastern part is night (where most people live). So, they can't appeal both part of the world at the same and rewatch is not fun. FIFA WC is unique that many people want to not sleep every once in 4 years to watch it but they definitely won't do that for UCL every year or a less competitive tournament like Euro or Copa. Euro lacks interesting and strong teams like Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay just like Copa America lacks strong teams like Germany, Italy, Spain, England which makes both of these tournaments less competitive compared to WC where all the teams play. Like WC, UCL also have best players from both Europe and Copa America making it as competitive as WC but it still can't appeal for the reason I mentioned. So Euro and Copa's appeal are even less outside the West.

    • @mdreazhosen5
      @mdreazhosen5 6 месяцев назад

      @@paularthur3467Ronaldo has played for three of the biggest football clubs in football history - Real Madrid, Man United and Juventus all of which have huge fanbase compare to let's say Messi's PSG. So, fans of these clubs will support Ronaldo. Ronaldo does a lots of ads too. Plus UCL may not be as huge as WC but it still is more popular than NBA and the only reason cricket world cup is more popular than UCL is because South Asia have 25% of Earth's population (2 billion). So, Ronaldo is not significantly less popular than Messi but surely Messi will be remembered more emotionally. Interesting fact: Cricket fanbase is probably the only fanbase as diverse as Football fanbase (even tho fewer countries play Cricket) because of India's diversity of languages and religions and by far the second most popular sport but basketball is the only sport where players will earn more money like football because of US's huge economy. So. learning about these 3 sports and their goats is extremely important for general knowledge. Most educated people should know who Jordan and Tendulkar are compare to other sports.
