As a guitar player I have always loved the Hammond organ. And so I have a C2 and 21H Leslie that I don’t even really know how to play. When I found this Leslie 120 I couldn’t help myself.
Fixing A truss rod in an Iceman guitar from fire damage

This Is in Iceman copy that looks like it was in a fire. A lot of the finish is bubbled off especially on the back of the guitar. It belongs to a friend of mine that has asked me to make it playable again.

I thought I would give this one a try. It was a lot harder than I thought but a lot of fun. I played all the parts except the cakewalk drum set. The guitar I am playing is a mystery guitar. I think it’s a regal or possibly a harmony. I put a Spruce top on it with X-Bracing. I think it recorded very well.

Parlor Guitar X-Brace conversion with new Spruce top

I Have decided that it is hard to make videos on full projects. I had to condense 2 1/2 hours. So in the future I’ll keep them short processes. Lol. Making videos It seems as a process in itself and has a large learning curve. I left a lot of things out in this video so it’s more of an encouragement than a how to. This guitar got a new spruce top and X bracing. Along with a truss rod and new F...
Carbon Fiber guitar headstock repair After 20 years
Просмотров 3,7 тыс.Год назад
This is one of the first carbon fiber repairs I did. This guitar belongs to Kevin of the Moondoggies and has been through quite a bit of abuse during his touring career. It’s still a great guitar any plans on using it for quite some time. If you watch them on RUclips you will occasionally see this guitar. He was very specific about not covering up the repair.
Shaving down a guitar neck Harmony Monterey archtop. Changing the Contour. Easier than you think.

Guitar neck reset tool / jig at the speed of light

I searched online for a tool to reset Guitar’s with. I Couldn’t find one so I kind of figured one out for myself. It’s not perfect and I can see a lot of room for improvement but for a first stab it seems to work very good. update: I forgot to take in account that an acoustic guitar has a saddle and an archtop is included in the bridge. So the amount I cut away was perfect. silly me.... Updat...

MCI JH-24 Recorder Tape shield repair
Просмотров 2612 года назад
This MCI Has been sitting around for quite some time because the shield wouldn’t raise and lower. So I decided it was time to get it back up and running so we can get some use out of it. Luckily I found the schematic so it was a lot easier to fix. At the end of the video you can see that the shield did not lower all the way but that was just a matter of adding a little oil.

Nice but I would have kept birch top
i love the razor blade straight edge
Thx for the encouragement. I did it all in cakewalk on a little laptop on my desk where I fix guitars. I used just the plugins that came with it. I did double track the main vocal. I've always loved that song and thought I would give it a try.
Just ran across this. Went to see the Cowsills in concert last night. I like your voice dubbing, what are you using. Sounds great, keep 'em coming.
Hello. Really good video. Could I talk you into converting an old guitar for me? You can do what I don't have the tools or knowledge to do. Cheers
Thanks for the comments. I don't do these kind of projects for people because it's labor-intensive. I would have to charge way more than the instrument is worth.
Great job!!
Thx
How to butcher a Guitar 🤣🤣
Sometimes you just got to go for it.
Great Job
Thx
Not sure you read comments, but hey Dave do you know anyone that makes a replacement headstock decal ?
No I don't. But I wish I did because my supertone doesn't have one either.
I think its a shame that its a recent trend to destroy ladder braced guitars by x-bracing them. There are not many of them left and they have a unique sound.
Point well taken. However no one was going to play this particular guitar again because it was un-inspiring to play. It deserves to be more than a wall hanger. Now it gets played daily. There was a reason it was only $30 in a pawn shop.
Yes they have a unique sound. The sound bad. And they are unplayable. Nobody is interested in playing them. That's why we are rebracing them. To get a guitar that people love to play😀
This should never be done. If the neck is too big, don't buy the guitar, or sell it if you own it. You can find slim necks - they are everywhere. Just get a different guitar.
thanks for the tips. Have an epiphone gold glory that love, but the neck is way too thick
good work, but OVER braced!!
Thx. Totally agree with the over bracing. Even so it's a really fun guitar play and doesn't sound half bad. I think I'll do better on my next one.
You get get some sandpaper inside and sand braces down until you get the sound you want.
A lot of otherwise good acoustic guitars have necks that are too fat, particularly for smaller hands/fingers. I got a luthier to "shave" an inexpensive Alvarez--which cost more than the guitar itself and frankly could go down an additional millimeter.
"Reinventing the wheel".In 2011 bought a well built acurate version of this from Jon Simpson for $130 . Was featured in American Lutherie Journal. Can also get FREE plans from Stewmac article. There is also a math formula available from article by Haze guitars and Dan Erlewine to calculate how much wood to trim off.
I've seen his video for building a new guitar neck set. But I have not seen anything on a neck reset. Can you send me a link or maybe the name of the tool. Would love to see it. Thx
Great job!
Great job! I done a few of these old guitars, I look for old solid spruce top Gtars, & despite their size... they sound really good. I carbon fiber the neck usually for steel string, but recently did one that I wasnt happy with, so I put nylon strings on it (it could take steel 11s) Now it sounds fabulous....Even over one of my best ceder tops....Rock on :)
Thanks for the kind words. I love these older and inexpensive guitars.
Here's a tip . Instead of painting it .. Use alcohol based tanning stain ... then just clear Lacquer it and your done .... I like to lightly sand the last coat with 300 or so grit and just leave it... it lets your hand slide up and down the neck a lot easier..
Very cool that you put it together. I have a 120 myself and a loose horn assembly on a plank on top, with some makeshift legs. With a simple passive crossover, and connected to my M100. Now I was looking for inspiration to build the rotor into the cabinet too and noticed your video. And I am not looking forward to the wood working, haha. Do the horn and the drum rotate the same direction now? I guess if you rotate the drum top to bottom, then they would counter-rotate, that should sound more rotary. Thanks!
Yes they both rotate in the same direction. I'm not sure what the difference in sound would be but it sounds great the way it is. If I were to do it again I would hog out all the material in the louvers with a forstner drill available at harbor freight first. And just use the router to clean it up. Good luck.
@@davepontrello4159 If it sounds great, don't change it! I'll have to try and see how it goes. Maybe this winter.
Thank you for doing this video. I’m sure at some point I’ll need to address this issue on my JH24.
Man... You should feel awesome about yourself. Great job. I've had a couple of neck repairs done by Done Bell. He did the same carbon fiber repair. Best to you.
You're the only guy to fix it properly.
Thanks for the kind words.
Thanks for the kind words.
Good stuff...I like playing, but not confident enough to try rebuilding one .
I didn't get confident until I did a few. Hard to say which comes first confidence, or success. Lol
One reason I'd choose Titebond over 2-part epoxy is the clean-up factor. Titebond can be cleaned easily using a wet rag whereas the epoxy would make a mess of surrounding surfaces if not careful, wax or not.
I have used West systems on lots of boat repairs and find it to be quite amazing as a bonding agent. And so in this type of repair I'm not sure how well titebond wood glue to the carbon fiber splines. My brother Paul talked me into trying super glue for this repair one time. That's what he used to fix Catalin radio cases. And believe it or not it actually work great too. That guitar is still playing great with no problems. I prefer to use titebond on neck repairs that do not require carbon fiber splines.
Nice job
Thank you

I do do work for local musicians in the Seattle area. But I turn down most work because I'm retired. I mostly work for fun now.
silvertone for sure, looks like mine!!! wonder how old it is?
It's hard to tell on these old guitars. But it has become one of my favorites.
@@davepontrello4159 thanks
This is my guitar. I found it in a free pile at a garage sale about 20 years ago. It’s been a wall hangar in my garage ever since. I knew it was way beyond my capabilities of trying to bring it back to life. Dave is a good friend and an amazing luthier among other talents. He can fix anything.
Thanks for the kind words. Perhaps more of a guitar mechanic...lol.
Nicely done! It turned out great!
Thank you very much. It is currently my favorite guitar.
Happy New Year, Dave!! Thanks for the share! I agree with many of the viewers, I would love to see the progress on this guitar if possible. 🙏 Cheers!!
Well that might be a bit in the future. But eventually I'll get it done. Lots of projects taking my time. And happy New Year to you as well
Are you gonna put new binding on it?
I already did. The finish on the back of the neck was all bubbled from the fire so I had to sand that off and I painted it black. It's just waiting for the body to be finished.
Love those old Harmony archtops.
Me too. I try and save as many that come my way.
I always put a long piece of cork on top, never marks the neck.
Nice job. Did you say you were gonna fix the binding too? I'm thinking that might be a tad uncomfortable. It would be cool to see the finished product. Thanks for sharing, and Happy New Year! 🥳🎉🍸
Happy New Year to you too. Actually did the headstock binding this afternoon. It came out okay.
@@davepontrello4159 I thought I saw some binding missing on the neck itself. I was thinking the hands would feel it sliding up and down the neck. I can't imagine installing/repairing binding. It looks very tedious. I see them scraping it and what not.
Love the Allman Brothers at the end
Thanks. I do like that song though.
So is carbon fiber really that strong and stable even when using those thin slices? Seems insane that more guitar necks aren't laminated with it to prevent the terrible breaks from happening to begin with. But, I'm sure that would raise the price of every guitar. I guess I just answered my own question on why all aren't using it
Yes carbon fiber is very strong. It's used quite extensively in the aeronautical business. The skin of the 787 is all carbon fiber. I see some acoustic guitar builders are sandwiching carbon fiber between there braces during the build.
Great job! Thanks for sharing! Every day learning something new.....Keep the great work!
Thank you. I like to share what I know.
I'm a member of the group on Facebook (guitar repair , set up , maintenance , ask a question .) I will be traveling till march and unable to do it but when I get back I plan to remove a fretboard from a cheap strat copy I picked up and fix a cracked neck where the truss rod was over tightened so this vid is helpful for me already 😊
I have done that exact repair on a Mexican telecaster. It came out great. So good luck with your project.
Nice work! Clamp..3 bucks at garage sale?
I bought all of those clamps at garage sales. Kim watched it and pointed that out to me. We had a good laugh.
We have similar bread here in Sweden (traditionally baked up north) they bake them both hard and soft. The best and most healthy Scandinavian bread is made in Denmark though it is made out of Rye and called Rugbröd
BRINGS BACK MEMORIES OF GROWING UP IN MONTANA

@@davepontrello4159 all Great memories! Thanks again
I slimmed down the neck on a Donner LP so it matches the profile of my Gibson. Only sandpaper, though. That way I could continue to play it until it felt right.
That sounds like it took a while. But as long as you get where you want to be all is good.
@@davepontrello4159 It did take a while, but I felt safer doing it like that.
Nice! An oscillating saw (google it if you don't know) would probably do good but I would do a test piece first. You can also glue sand paper to the side of the blade if need be.
I tried it on a old neck I had and it actually worked very very good. Plan on trying it on my next full neck reset. But I will undercut it just to make sure.
@@davepontrello4159 Right. It seems like it would work tapering it in towards the tenon (or dovetail) although maybe on just the sides only, using a chisel near the end. Less 'flossing' that way.
There's definitely a huge learning curve. I think the tool will evolve the more I use it.
nice video....keep em coming... please
Thank you. I'll try and keep them coming but they are a lot of work. And it really slows down the work. Lol, But it's really fun sharing.
Nice job, would have loved to see the original tail piece used 😊
Thank you.
That double f hole archtop was my first guitar christmas 1962 and I was 12. Loved it. learned all my early dylan and guthery on it
Mine too, age 15, in 1959. Either a "Harmony" or a "Kay" bought mail order for $15. The string action was about half an inch.
Great job. Greetings from Cheshire UK. I really enjoyed watching your work.
