Cleaning up the Free Festiva - SiV Ep 3
Boy this video takes me back. I had the civic shifter in my car, way easier for $8 but the main thing I did was make the anti drop bracket. That entire shifter assembly is held in place by a big rubber donut that deteriates over time and will allow the whole shifter to fall through the floor. I still make the brackets, if you are interested I could make them for you.
As a new MetroX owner, good to see the turntable and free scanning modes in operation real-time. You just popped up in my feed, thanks for sharing, and looking to see how you apply Quicksurface Lite. I haven’t seen any tutorials anywhere else yet using QSLite, so subscribed and liked.
@@mikecrane2782 I would recommend checking out @Learn Everything About Design here on YT, I followed his quick guide to use QS to do plane alignment. I haven't gotten much further than that yet haha
Sorry I missed this, but a like and comment for the algorithm.
This video was so amazing just like all your videos. My e-brake light was on no matter what and I couldn’t figure out why but I changed the fuses and suddenly it works perfectly fine
how much hp and torque gains ?
@@drtb69 from 63hp to just under 100hp
@@SametIndustriesthank you, was thinking about using better cylinder head cam, springs, and doing 1720 cc overbore .. is it possible to get a 140hp out of these natural aspirated?
@@drtb69 Yes, it's possible, just a lot of headwork. More than just a cam upgrade, there's lots of porting and some piston upgrades that would need done. With that and an aftermarket ECU you can get 130-150. At that point however, a BP may be a better option, they make 130 stock.
use tpu 95a that shit is tough asf ! I'm planning of printing control arm bushings seeing how mine you can only get by replacing the entire Knuckles which are discounted
@@ericdavis2926 We don't want 95a, that would be too stiff for this application. The OEM bushings here are closer to 45

Great scan! Can you share more videos? Kinda kicking myself for not backing MetroX on Kickstarter-I hesitated a while, and now I’ve gotta pay more to get one.

25:13 i think its a good bet that the stock g6 should hold 300hp fairly reliably, that's what the mazda3/6 guys have been seeing with the g35m-r 5 speed, which is the generation of trans after the KL/FS units you have there. The issue though is, where that stregnth comes from and does it transfer over to the hybrids we are building, the 35 and later cases are noticeably heavier than the older units, the 35 5 speeds have basically the same bellhousing and mid case as the g6, lots of ribbing in the bell and diff areas, they also moved the neutral safety switch from the diff area, which is a known weak spot on the 15/25 series of trannies. Thats where the trans saver comes from, trying to brace that location up. And there's the different mount situations, imo, the diff mount on my mx6 and similar cars is the worst possible setup, its bolted to a boss that's sticking out from the differential, applying leverage to a part of the case with a hole in is for that sensor and that's probably why the KL series became infamous for cracked cases even with stock power. The best mount imo would be the mx3 style, a bracket on the back of the diff held on by 2 main case bolts, it's in line with the diff, shouldn't apply any twist, and might even help hold it all together. Upgrading that bracket to even better reinforce the diff is something I have in my endless list of projects. In short, I think the extra bearings alone will help, but I feel the actual strength of your hybrid trans will depend on you case, supporting mods, mounting solution and how it's all assembled.
All the B Series versions use a through-bolt rear mount, similar to the MX3 We could use the 28 Spline mid-case, as long as it is still rod-shifted
6:16:47 way back in the day, I was talking with a few people about ideas for strengthening the trans, and one of my ideas was what I called the dog bone. Eliminate the reverse synchro hardware (just shift it like grandpa used to,reverse synchros are why testosterone has been dropping for 40 uears!) And in its place an assembly consisting of some spacers, some bearings pressed onto those spacers, and an aluminum plate machined to snugly fit over those bearings. All hidden neatly under the cover, though I also talked about a fabricated cover to tie it all together. Apparently Mazda was lurking in the forums back around 2005, because that kinda what they did here.
6:03:34 its entirely possible for that gear combination to work, especially if the g6 pinion has the same tooth count as the kl pinion. But even if it doesn't it might still work. Different ratios often share one or the other gear, the .68 6th gear ratio actually uses the exact same counter gear as the common .755 5th gear found in mazda3s, both are 34 tooth and share a part number, the difference between the ratios is the .68 pinion gear is a 50 tooth piece. Iirc the .755 pinion is 48 teeth. You can also combine gears to create ratios that the factory never produced. A rule of thumb iv heard but have no reason to trust says you can change one of the gears by a tooth without issue. Something i may do with my pile of spare parts is start swapping gears around and documenting which combinations may work.
I will double check, but I think the G6 0.68 was actually using the same parts as the early cable 0.68 5th from the Diesel 323. I have those NOS from Mazda and will see if they are indeed the same. It's hard to swap between ratios when only changing 1 gear, it will almost always end up with imperfect engagement since the tooth size and diameter both ideally need to match.
5:57:02 what i ended up doing for that gear, since my own lathe was disassembled, I brought it into work at the shop, in one piece with the gear still on the carrier, but the inner gears and spacers removed, and used the old off car brake lathe. Mounted it up with a couple of cones with the lathe spindle running through the carrier, carefully setup to run as true as possible, used just one insert tool to remove a few mm of the gear root on the spedo ring side. I used a straight edge and caliper to measure a stock KL from the carrier bearing end to the side of the gear, then cut the G6 gear until it matched. I avoided the gear teeth because I was using someone else's machine and I only had carbide inserts on hand. And they don't like interrupted cuts. Makes a hell of a racket. On my own machine I would have used high speed steel amd and got it done in one go. After the root of the gear is where I wanted it, I brought it home and used an angle grinder to bring the teeth down to match. Taking my time working around the circumstance until the lathe marks started to disappear. Then I knew it was at the right place. I did carefully go around until it was as smooth and perfect as I could get it. You wouldn't guess it was done redneck style if I didn't tell you lol. The gear still works out to be a few mm thicker than stock, so thats good for stregnth.

@SametIndustries Yeah, roger that, I am almost there, as I have disconnected everything with intent to replace. I will need my bros wire wheel and drill to do a cleaning of threads before new Nuts go on. Also, a while ago on live stream, you mentioned where I can go to buy pretty much an entire new car, so I searched on Google and didn't find anything, but I did come accross a Mazda Miata 1.8T swapped '88 Festiva AND HOLY COW it looked MEAN 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Love it!
All track Festivas should get together once a year and have a track day.
@@cafemotorsports We did for a couple years actually! Festiva Insanity was a track weekend meet at INDE Motorsports
@SametIndustries Arizona? We should try doing it again. Or more of a central track
@@cafemotorsports Yep, in AZ. It worked well because that was Charlie's home track, so he knew everyone there & was able to get a us all a really good price to run for the weekend. I'm sure a lot of people would be interested in doing it again, and a centralized location sounds great, but the cost can be prohibitive (we are still Festiva owners after all 😅) If someone organized a track day that was less than $450 for a weekend & didn't have too many tech rules (no cages, no roll bars, etc) I think it would be pretty successful
@@SametIndustries You are correct about the price. Sometimes it helps to know the right individuals. Well if we come up with a plan am in. I was thinking of doing summit racing autocross week. But if we plan something I would rather be around Festiva gear heads.
Watching this live and seeing the ¿hoonigan? Interview of Charlie is what originally turned me onto festivas.
