This Is A Commander Channel
США
Добавлен 21 июл 2020
Welcome to This is a Commander Channel where this is a Commander channel. We are all addicted to that cardboard crack of Magic: The Gathering and specifically the Commander format. We’re a casual group, not cEDH, but that’s not to say we don’t build powerful and tuned decks. We avoid building decks focused on tutors, counterspells, stax, and winning through combos. Instead, we go the route of battlecruiser decks with big splashy spells. We hope that you enjoy the content and learn about some cool cards you’ve never heard of before.
TR&CI 156: Combat Phase Part 6 - Combat Requirements & Restrictions (Numbers Of Blockers & Menace)
In this episode of Tough Rules & Cool Interactions, I will be continuing the dive into the Combat Phase and all of its complexity. In this Part 6, I'll be finishing (possibly) the coverage of Combat Requirements & Restrictions, looking at effects that demand a specific number of blockers and effects that limit that number, and then I also take a look at if a non-flying and non-reach creature can block a creature with flying as well as if an unblockable creature can be blocked.

I never would have thought that an unblockable creature could be blocked.
@@lindacarpenter2830 It does seem strange, but in Magic, anything is possible.
You bringing it up makes me think that they will be blocked, but if I saw this in a game, I would have no idea.
@@TheAlcoholic83 Heh, yeah, it can be hard to be tricky when the very act of bringing it up draws attention to the trickiness of it.
I would think that in both cases the creature that enters is able to block because they are skipping the assignment part of blocking.
@@cwill1090 And you would be correct with that thought. Nicely done. If you're interested in the CR for it, it is 509.4b.
@ThisIsACommanderChannel woohoo!
Ah, I cheated undeliberately with question 2. I was checking the Scryfall entry for the current text in the card and it states that the created saproling is indeed created and blocking even if blocks couldn't be declared legally. For Q1, once a creature it's blocked I think it's too late to add any evasion abilities. Cat token blocks as per the card text on Brimaz.
An accidental cheat seems okay. It was mid research.
@@tychoMX Ha! That is all good. It is nice that Scryfall includes those sorts of notes. Sometimes when things are not spelled out in the CR we actually have to go to those sorts of notes.
For the first question, giving the boar flying after Brimaz has been declared a blocker is too late, as flying is a restriction on which creatures may be declared as blockers. Changling Outcast puts a restriction on which cratures may be declared as blockers, but the token Flash Foliage creates is never declared as a blocker, rathers it is created blocking, so it gets around that restriction. This is similar to how tokens created tapped and attacking get around paying for Propaganda.
@@masondorseth4731 Correct! Nicely done. For anyone curious about a specific CR citation for the bonus questions, you can check out 509.4b.
First!
You're just too quick!

How I see the rulings Delirium can be reset through 613.7/613.8 613.11 Timestamp 613.7/613.8 Ability Dependency 613.9 Continuous Effect Override
The fact that Riku lacks not only white (literally the best modal color) but also just says screw you to modal abilities makes me furious. WHY?! Why make a card then make 90% of cards that have modal abilities COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY USELESS?!? This is my least favourite legendary creature that I’m still gonna build cause DAMNIT it looks fun, but this was an absolute design failure on WotC’s part.
It is a bummer when they dip their toes into a really cool design space but then the colors for the creature just seem... wrong. Karazikar has been my favorite deck for a while but they keep making non-BR goad stuff and it kills me each time.
This one did break my head a little bit.
Hopefully it is mended back over time. Nothing a few games of Commander can't help to fix.
This...feels incorrect
I'm also not knowledgeable enough to say anything strong against it but it feels wrong asf
@@yoshitheonly That's why it's nice that he provides those CR references. He backs up everything with the source of why it is.
@@yoshitheonly Are you saying that it feels wrong like it just 'feels' wrong, or are you saying that I got the rules wrong? I'm always happy to provide more information about it in case of the latter, but in the case of the former, for sure, it's a strange thing and why I made the video covering it (and why this whole series of videos exists really).
Yeah, Replacement Effects, and how they 'look forward into time' cause a lot of weird things that just... feel strange...
Hello! Can you please explain how Tainted Remedy and Sulfuric Vortex interact?
Both are replacement effects. Therefore, the player who is affected by the event that will be replaced (the one who would be gaining the life) is the one who chooses their order. If they choose to have Sulfuric Vortex be first, they don't gain any life so Tainted Remedy no longer applies. If they choose to have Tainted Remedy go first, Sulfuric Vortex no longer applies.
Sorry for the late reply, my S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 addition has hit me pretty hard, but that guy got you with the reply and I just wanted to affirm what they said. With them both being Replacement Effects, the affected player, the one trying to gain life, chooses the order of how they apply.
@@seandun7083 Correct!
Despite being shorter, still a little over 7 minutes. I enjoyed it, i had no idea it worked like this. I have followed your other videos on replacement effects and how they look forward, but i still wouldn't have put this together on my own. Cool
A lot of Magic's rules are like that. Layers, Replacement Effects, and more, they're the same base CR that define them, but the individual situations still seem so different each time. When examined under a microscope, you can see their similarities, but when just in the moment, mid-game, it's hard to tell and it seems like something different.
Notably, it would have to be put onto the battlefield from exile, not cast from exile. If you cast from exile, it will get the cast trigger, but won't be able to see itself because it is on the stack.
Correct, it must just straight up enter. It's hand for when someone uses an Oblivion Ring type thing to 'remove' your Ulamog. He will come back strong.
Indomitable Creativity puts the creatures into play from exile and can be used to cheat Ulamog out early. Also look out for effects that exile and make a token copy of a creature such as the one from Scarab God.
Ah, yeah, a very cool card to cheat him out in red if you're not in U/W for the Flicker/Blink strategies.
That was really clever. My mind was going on a different direction with the discrepancies between casting and entering triggers that the newer Eldrazi have.
Yeah, I was expecting the little things talked about earlier, but the enters from exile part caught me by surprise.
I have played against two people running him in their decks and when I told them about this trick they thought I was joking or messing with them. It is a strange thing for the brain to wrap around, that something in one place can see itself in another place at a different point in time.
With there being 2 eldrazis in 5 color, that gives you access to some good flicker cards outside of colorless.
For sure, lots of good flicker in W/U that you can use to get the 17/17 mode.
@@ThisIsACommanderChannel I'm going to try and make this a deck.

Happy to have helped you out!
That is some vicious art, love it!
Oh yeah, the card is Village Rites from the artist Igor Kieryluk who is a legend in the Magic art world. They've done a ton of card arts and they always do a fantastic job. A couple of their most well known arts are probably Deafening Silence and the original Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite.
I'm glad you made this episode because i felt like I knew all this but I didn't. So thank you because now I do.
Cool beans, happy to help out. If there are any other tricky scenarios that you can think of, let me know and I can include them in the follow-up episode for next week.
Only one question: what is your preferred spelling - Ta-ta or Tah-tah
I... um.... I....... uhhhh.... Putting me on the spot with this one, huh. I want to say that in my head it is "ta ta" but I could also see it as a hybrid like "ta tah" as the 1st one is a quicker one just by a bit.
@ perfecto 🤌
would be really curious to hear how a bunch of these rules interact with one of my favorite cards in my goad decks. Invasion Plans
Ah, I will add this one to the list of cards to cover for next week. These are the sorts things I'll be covering in that episode.
I own and play 5 different goad decks. I see a goad video. I click the goad video. It makes me go design more goad decks. I swear it's not a problem.
HAHAHA! That's awesome! Which are the five you have? My first RB deck was Karazikar, the Eye Tyrant and it quickly became my favorite deck. I also made Jon Irenicus, Shattered One but it doesn't give away mean creatures but evasive creatures, and then recently I built Rendmaw, Creaking Nest and I've only gotten to play it a few times but I love it already.
@@ThisIsACommanderChannel so it started with the Baulders gate precon for Firkraag. Then I made Jon Irenicus. Then the Nelly borca precon (which has an actual goad win con red enchantment in it.) then rendmaw my bird man. Then Braal lord of murder.
@DraXCore Ah, very cool. One of the guys in my playgroups has a Firkrag deck, it's pretty solid. Nelly is very good too.
Obey ALL restrictions, no exceptions, and satisfy as many requirements as possible. Interesting that they call them requirements since we can so easily not meet requirements. I wonder if a better word could have been used back when they first came up with it.
Yeah, it might have been more fitting to call them "checks" as you sort of check off as many as you can.
@@ThisIsACommanderChannel Checks, I like that.
Requests?
@@seandun7083 Yeah, I could see that one too. The game is asking of you to do something, it's requesting that you do them. I guess request has a bit more of a sense of you just choosing to not do it. It's a tricky thing. As always, I don't envy the designers for their job, especially when you get into accounting for other languages than English.
@@ThisIsACommanderChannel yeah. I guess in this case it helps a bit that it's mostly just a term that shows up in the CR as opposed to one that's on cards themselves. Intervening-if-clauses however are one that could maybe be changed to make them more clear for newer players, though I'm not entirely sure how to do that.
That's some really loud motoring at the end. Yikes. Maybe someone goaded them.
HA! You know, I think were all goading each other. I have no clue where they do these races, I hear them on a lot of nights, maybe one day I can find it out and go watch. Never seen a street race in person.
We have been attacking planeswalkers for a long time now when goaded. oops
The cars racing at the end, must have been really loud or you just have a sensitive mic.
A bit of both. I record next to some large windows, so sound isn't blocked all too much like a typical wall would absorb the sound, so it was fairly loud, but also I use a Blue Yeti and it's pretty sensitive. I have the gain set to the lowest possible and I record at around 70% volume.
I appreciate all the time and energy you're putting into making sure there is valuable information in a concrete fashion available.
Thanks, I'm glad the content is appreciated by players. It's always nice to know that it's helping folks out to have better games of Magic.
Is this change for standard and commander?
@@Madhun7 Yes to both. It is a change to the Comprehensive Rules that all formats of Magic draw from.
Don't be afraid of advertising your content elsewhere, I found you through the Command Zone video too! Awesome work!❤❤
@@yannickronnert6367 Oh, thanks, and yeah that comment got a lot of traction that I didn't expect. I figured it would get buried in all the other comments they get, sadly no reply from any of the CZ folks so not sure if they do plan to make a video covering it. With their reach, it could really help out a lot more players. Crazy enough, there is a chance I'll get to 4k subs by the end of the year, which is cool given the super niche and complex stuff my videos cover.
Brimaz, King of Orezkos and similar effects also get around the blocking restriction.
Interesting. I assume a similar thing would be true for 2 headed Giant (Both heads can attack/block with 1 creature)?
Sheesh this seems unnecessary
Like all big changes to longstanding systems, it will take a while for us to get used to the change, but in the long term it will (hopefully) lead to a more streamlined system for players. Fingers crossed.
@ThisIsACommanderChannel ok so today in Arena.... its as if all creatures have trample. Is this.... what does trample do anymore? Is this broken? I swung with a 4/4 double strike. I assigned 1 damage to the blocker and did 3 to my opponent with 1st strike damage step, then did the full 4 with the normal damage step. No trample.... ?!?!?!?!? Seems insannnnne
@@snarferyasmr3739 That seems like a glitch. The rules to Trample shouldn't have been touched, in order to assign any Combat Damage to the Defending Player, you will still need to have assigned a lethal amount of damage to creatures. The other thing that should have changed is that when assigning damage just to the creatures, you no longer must deal a lethal amount of damage to one creature before moving on to assign any damage to any other creature. I'd send a support ticket to the Arena team if you're non-Trample creature is getting to assign Trample damage to the Defending Player.
I understand Silent Arbiter's wording to mean 'no more than one creature can be declared as a blocker each combat' which would then end up applying to each player, because each player is declaring blockers separately. Or in clearer English 'each player May not declare more than one creature as a blocker each combat'
Yeah, that's right there with the Mirri wording. I doubt we will ever see them word it like those other two and all future versions of these abilities will be more in line with Mirri's wording.
An episode on goading would probably be good, I don't think I've seen one from you about that.
Oh that will for sure be happening. I actually wanted to make that for this weeks episode but I got too busy with stuff and was also following the election a bit. So I had to whip up something quick and decided to break this component out of the episode I was going to do. Next week's episode is going to go over some Goad stuff and attack requirements and restrictions.
@@ThisIsACommanderChannelone really cool interaction with Goad is when a creature is goaded multiple times by different players. You need to fulfill as many requirements as possible without violating restrictions, so if player A goads my creature once, but player B goads it twice then (if they are my only opponents), I have to attack player A.
TaTa!
Have a good one!
Can you please cite rules. I don’t understand how damage could be dealt only one way. I was under the impression damage was instantaneous and once you pass priority after blocker assignment you can’t do any additional actions until it’s completed.
CR 500s is what covers the Turn Structure, in CR 510 we get to the Combat Damage Step with 510.2 covering how all the damage is dealt simultaneously after its been assigned. Then in 510.3 it mentions that the Active Player receives Priority and this is also when things that trigger on damage being dealt are placed onto the Stack. It isn't until The section of End of Combat Step that we get to CR 511.3 that it details how all creatures, battles, and PWers are removed from combat. So because of this, all the times players get Priority between those two points means that a player could use their Reconnaissance to pull their attacking creature out of combat and untap it, even after it has dealt combat damage.
Intuitively this one makes sense to me - "combat" seems to express the interaction with each individual opponent in a 1:1 basis.
@@tychoMX Yeah, I can get that. It is multiple players each having their own little battle with each other, it's multiple combats between wizards.
I understand Silent Arbiter's wording to mean 'no more than one creature can be declared as a blocker each combat' which would then end up applying to each player, because each player is declaring blockers separately. Or in clearer English 'each player May not declare more than one creature as a blocker each combat'
Was hoping for a long episode because I need a good distraction. The election is coming to a close and I'm ready to not have to see any more campaign commercials. Good video.
I heard that. Keep distracting yourself, just live blissfully in Magic games, election season will be done soon-ish.
Oh god, why does my brain hurt so much. I saw that this video was shorter than usual so I thought it would be a simple one. And I guess it was simple but still so weird of an answer.
Even the simple things aren't simple.
@@ThisIsACommanderChannel So very true
Actually ran into this a couple weeks ago and we did do it in apnap order. Oooops
@@lindacarpenter2830 Oh snap! I hope it didn't change the outcome of the game by much.
Reading the card really does not explain the card.
@@ccarpenter1128 Indeed, gone are the days.
I'd disagree. Reading the card does explain the card if you know the rules of the game.
@oelboy Reading the CR + the card explains the card.
@@ThisIsACommanderChannel I'm being a bit facetious here but I'd argue that there isn't a single card in Magic that explains itself entirely without you having to know any rules. 🙈
@@oelboy I've actually often described the game of Magic and its rules and cards that basically, the is a base of rules, the Comprehensive Rules, but then many of the cards in Magic are just an addendum to those rules. Each card is an addition to those rules, a redaction, or a modification.
Yay! Cool fringe combat case...
@@corvidcognition Oh yeah, pretty fringe. The episode last week made me think about this.
So just curious does indom get ward from cards you discard and
No Ward, only Hexproof and its variations. Also of note, it doesn't get Shroud if any creatures discarded have that.
As a gruul player, I love this change 🤩
Oh yeah, Gruul smashy smash is even better now.
First Strike + Deathtouch now is more dangerous than Trample + Deathtouch
Fun fact, WotC have never printed a creature that has Deathtouch & Trample natively on it as keywords. They have printed those sorts of creatures that can get those abilities if other creatures have them, but only that way. I wonder from time to time if we will ever see the day that they do.
I don't think this change really affects how any of those mechanics interact with each other. Both combinations are and still will be very good.
@seandun7083 First Strike + Deathtouch is significantly stronger. When blockers don't have First Strike, attacker may assign 1 dmg on each blocker, and if there are not enough survivors for second damage step, all are gone. Ex: a 4/4 First Strike Deathtouch kills up to four blockers without taking damage. Trample + Deathtouch still works almost the same.
@@ogrokun but you could already do that with first strike + deathtouch before the change... That's why 3/4 versions of Glissa are super powerful as well as Thalia & Gitrog.

Thanks for putting this out! Saw your comment on the command zone video and came straight over here
Oh, cool beans! Yeah, always a fan of the CZ channel, they're what got me to take the plunge a long time ago to try out Commander. I hope you enjoy the video, nowhere near the production value of the CZ folks, but fingers crossed the info helps you out in your future games.
Does damage on creatures from the first combat step carry over to the additional combat phase?
Yes, the damage that is marked on them during a turn stays marked on them (from combat and any non-combat damage) until the end of the turn when the Cleanup Step happens.
That is such a cool change and I am definitely building a deck around this. Gruul menace and lure focused. Thank you so much.
Maybe when you finish it you can share your deck list here as I too have been tempted to make a deck just to focus on this rules change. I love combat, it's great!
