The combine are probably some of the best cosmic and body horror out there. They're impossible to truly categorize with Man's concepts, being something beyond them. They are best described as an all-consuming force, but that doesn't do it justice. Look at what they did with human technology. Reverse engineered, adapted with their own. Handheld firearms, cars, trains, helicopters. Whether or not these are temporary accomodations or permanent additions is unknown, but Man has been digested technologically. Look how they make their soldiers, tearing out imprints, mixing and matching memories to create the ideal human mind for their purposes, reading and overwriting like the mind is just a file. Mankind is being digested mentally. Look how they make their synths. Originally they were unaltered lifeforms, picked for their usefulness. Slowly, like humans, they were modified. Soon all the systems were shown to work and the original species discarded, replaced by the biomechanical synth taking its place, a haunting shadow of something else. Man is undergoing this process, and soon human as a concept shall be broken down and incorporated into the monolith that is the Combine. Uncountable cells, each their own intelligence, making up the terrifying whole. The combine do not adapt, they simply take designs devised by evolution or conscious minds and remix and match until a useful machine or synth has been designed. Each synth is the product of a line of potentially automated engineer-like machines or beings remixing designs from older designs made long ago, repurposing and modifying but never truly innovating. This is all we really know. Man is nothing to these beings, we've only managed to delay our integration. The combine are the ultimate cosmic horror villain.

Destiny would guide them to a common end. Was this the same entity I encountered in Centuria IV? Soon, a strong gust of wind with hail hit us. It was evident that we needed to go to the subway as soon as possible. She seemed calmer in this situation, despite its severity. Had she lived through and endured so many bad things that she was toughened by them?
