I went from Broke English Teacher to Full-Time Software Engineer in Japan. I had ZERO programming skills and within 2 years I was able to start my new life as a Software Engineer/Web Developer
(I took a 6-month detour, to learn Shopify development and try running my own e-commerce store)
Connect with me so I can help you:
1. Learn to code / take your next step in learning
2. Get your first Tech job / freelancing gig
3. Spend at least a few years in the industry and get that $100,000 salary
Keep in mind some people with CS degrees start out higher than that right out of college so this isn't such a high goal in the tech industry.

How I got my first job as a Software Engineer #softwareengineer #softwaredeveloper #webdevelopment
Watching this video and realizing swe probably isn't for me. Thinking of switching to something more hands on maybe electrical or mechanical? Any tips from anyone that might've had this realization.
Yeah then getting into building the hardware is a good route. I was watching this video to check into it a while back. ruclips.net/video/-nunWaprTM4/видео.html
i live in turkey and this is my dream i actually want to be developer on japan
schedule a meeting with me!
For your first tech job in Japan, did you send resume to the official homepage of the company? Or do you use Linkedin and recruiter contact you?
I get contacted by a lot of recruiters on Linkedin and other places. I've had interviews through job websites like Paiza and Bizreach. The company I work for interviews people who contact directly and through all those other sources. The way I got in at this company was from responding to a Tweet from the Tech Lead. It's all about networking unless you have something amazing on your resume, like CS degree from ivy league and internship at a FAANG level company or something.
I hope you are doing well :) I have a question How you got your 1st IT jobs without any experience as i talked with several people living and working in japan as software engineer most of them said that its Hard to get in company with NO experience as a new graduate even if you know japanese as they will prefer local graduate compared to foreign graduate
It is hard but not impossible. You have to do something to make yourself stand out from the crowd. Someone who has been slacking off in Japan as an English teacher or something and has no tech background will be at a big disadvantage for sure. Someone who did a CS degree to the minimum standards without doing anything above and beyond the call of duty will also be at a disadvantage. Luckily for me, I had been working hard throughout the years to study the Japanese language so I passed every level of the JLPT from N5 to N1. I had that going for me. I can work in a Japanese speaking office. I also did some very basic freelancing, building a homepage for a local business. The freelance project was nothing special but it showed that I was taking the initiative and very serious about changing my career. One real project for a client that you took from the client's requirements and built out into reality, did the infrastructure to host it on the internet, connect domain, etc....that one REAL project is worth 100 practice projects in my opinion. If companies are requiring you to have work experience then you have to go out and make your own work experience. You might have to build a couple of projects for free but take it seriously as if they were paying you a lot of money, do a good job, and get that real experience employers are looking for.
Also, to prevent the lag you could use the language as a slug for example site/en/whatever or site/jp/whatever
You can also Ctrl + Click on a component or any other keyword and it will redirect you to the definition! Good job man! Cheers
Thanks! I will keep on going!
mm if youi're working on a page that needs seo like that you could use a library like next-intl, it's easier implement a toggle language actually. You don't want all your componentes to be 'client-side', you should take advantage of server side rendering to improve your SEO.
Thanks for the advice! I'm still learning all the best practices, I'll definitely check it out. Any idea how to get the google search result to not show Create Next App and Generated by create next app as our website name and title? I've tried quite a few things and can't get it to work. Somewhere said to make an _app.js file with header info. I tried adding header info in various files.
you not showing resolvingly the code, codeing how actually softwareengineers actions, so waste of time wideo . these kind of videos are effeecting to you with way of : how to not-success and how to boring-work area without joyful elements and fires, because the big companies "compete" against you, so their connectionpeople shows you how to lose actually. LOL
Check my other ones
Wow, Shopify (Liquid programming)? Piece of cake hehe. I hope you're doing some headless e-commerce for your clients. These builds are rare to see. Nice workplace! I hope I can join Cisco too very soon.
Headless is next on my list of things to try. I almost has a contract to do it but the client decided not to.
You will struggle, you just dont know how much you dont know. Most pro i know code from 10-12 years old and around 30-34 they still learn new things. If you fine that you will be C-tier coder then you can start at 30, but you will never get to same level as guys who started early.
very true. But if someone is thinking about getting into coding after 30 they probably don't have anything lined up that would be better than being a C-tier coder. I had being a guitar teacher and fluent in Japanese. That's about it. We are losers looking for a second chance at success in life.
@@WebDevJapan Nobody is loser, its just matter of amount of time you need to spend + individual talent and fact that above 30 you usually have family with different priorites. C-tier coder is still ok, good salary, cool job, but they just need to accept that they will be not second linus propably.
@@frontalachivment3604 Yes, I've accepted that. Now I'm working full-time as a c-tier front end dev at a tech company while starting my own e-commerce dev agency on the side with low code / no code.
Nice trip 🎉 Thank you. I'm subscribed. Watching from Ukraine
very cool I see the flag. Are you American?
@WebDevJapan not American, but I like American country 💕
Great great video, that's the first time i see some reallife developer shit, not an google developer who tries to tell me that he just eats, drinks and chills 7 and a half hours and then just works for 20 min and tries to look busy the last 10 min
Thanks. You're gonna hate my Tokyo day in like video of when I went into the office lol
That office is so empty.
yeah....I guess work from home people
Really cool! I'm planning to visit Tokyo.
I didn't show it in this video but Akihabara is my favorite place to go, if you like anime and/or video games.
do you fluently in japanese? is it at least N2 to got job as i see your advertisment use hiragana katakana japanese /kanji???
For the website in the thumbnail, yes they will need at least N2. It's primarily for Japanese people but I got a lot of interviews on there as a foreigner with N1. There are other websites that are okay with N3 level Japanese.
that was cool, i'm commenting as a beginner in software engineering next i will comment as a professional.
You got it! I'll be waiting for that professional comment! I'm gonna share this on my personal Facebook so I see it in my Facebook memories next year. I'll come back and see how you're doing.
What level of japanese you know? Like N2 or N3 etc etc and does it affect the salary in Japanese company ( Not black company) as full stack developer
I wouldn't say it affects the salary because some of the highest paying companies don't require any Japanese and the tech team is all in English. But you'd need to be more of a senior level dev. Having high Japanese skills will get you in the door with low tech skills. That was my situation. I had no CS degree, no work experience, but I have N1 Japanese.
@WebDevJapan what the salary difference in international company and japanese company for Entry level ( with N2 langauge certificate) in full stack or any tech job you know of . AND TOP 3 CITY FOR SOFTWARE JOBS IN JAPAN THAT'S ITT
@@Crowely271 I'm not sure about the difference in salary. I haven't noticed. You can check the best jobs on japandev.com The general Tokyo area has the most tech jobs. Osaka and Nagoya are also good.
@@WebDevJapan and how's the market ( Acceptance rate in jobs ) for the entry level full stack developer or web developer or software developer in Tokyo
@@Crowely271 It's better than most other countries in the world. I'm almost at a year and a half of full-time work experience in Japan and I don't think I would be able to get a job in the USA right now.
Goodluck Topson <3
Arigato🙏
can u also not do ctrl + left click on the thing at 13:30 to go there
Thanks for sharing the ending, it was a lot of fun. Let's not forget that we also have to have a dynamic part of our life like riding a bicycle. And the person who said he gave up because he was 40, don't let him get discouraged, I'll try too and I've studied a lot and I won't be a university expert, but with the years I've been reading about programming and the code bootcamp, I won't get discouraged, anyone should be able to. try it, even if it is not at the highest level of expertise but with the highest quality focused on something like backend. Never lose hope despite people who are toxic and make you smaller. Don't leave this life without trying to be happy by following your dream. Every day meditating on what things make you happy, seeing how to enjoy even the bad days and frustrating things by changing your focus, and always the camaraderie getting along well with your coworkers.
very well said YES
You kinda revived an old dream I had given up on. I'll get my masters in CS soon, got the N1 back in 2019 + C2 English. I should have a decent chance of getting a job in Japan! That's pretty cool knowing how bad the IT job makret is everywhere else.
That's awesome! Let me know if you need any help finding a job over here.
Very interesting channel, binging some videos now. 平均残業7h未満 is absolutely insane! Like, hell nah, who in their right mind would apply for that
11:47 I saw everything bro
I should have edited that out lol
< Could you please give advice for this question ?/> // if small piece of tattoo on hand that is visible area , can able work as foreigner Software engineer in Japanese company? // Arm tattoos can cover with long sleeves but that one hard to cover up that's why. Im glad to hear your experience 🎏
It really depends on the company's policy. If they are a forward thinking company and are trying to fill the vacant positions with foreigners then they should set aside their outdated way of thinking that tattoos are associated with criminals. You can get an idea of this by looking at their company website or trying to stalk some of the employees on Linkedin or other social media and see if people have visible tattoos. But for many Japanese companies I would try to cover it up with bandage if you can. I wear fingerless gloves in the wintertime anyway so it wouldn't be so strange for you to wear some gloves most of the time, saying it helps with carpel tunnel or something. And some days use a bandage instead so people don't get suspicious. Sadly, that is the reality of living in Japan with tattoos. I have one on my bicep. I have to keep a towel hanging over my shoulder anytime I go to a hot spring because many hot springs have a sign saying no tattoos and they will kick you out if you sneak in with a tattoo and they see you with it exposed.
@ Big thanks and appreciate your time and respond. I could not able to know which company i will work as the Hakken shain but i store your great advice. Keep up the great work !
mine it doesn't display anything it keep say network failure but my net is good

There’s a “Turning Japanese” joke here. I really think so…
What is your salary in Japan
7 figure yen salary
do you want to ordeeeeeerrrrrrrrrr
i am thinking to come japan as the international student how can i crack the software engineering job in japan?
What kind of student? Studying CS? Joining a language school to study Japanese?
You are living my dream!! I hope I could reach this one day
If you stay consistent, you will. Where are you at in your coding journey so far?
Was not expecting the muscle girls bar at the end, amazing
lol yeah! I'm definitely going back next time I'm over that way.
this dude is a supreme chad
It was a nice a nice video but why do they have to whitewash everything it’s like an insane asylum I would go out of my mind if I had to work in that office.
I thought it's a nice office to work in. I could understand if you were talking about the hallways. I did get lost at one point but there's nothing they can do about that. It's a public office building and Cisco just has offices on multiple floors in there.
@ oh yah no I just mean me personally I’ve worked in the woods and on ranches most my life, if I have to do office it has to be my own personal battle station. Was a nice video though relaxing.
I'm from Burma (Myanmar), bro. I'm an undergraduate. What do I need to work at Cisco? Bro, apart from coding skills, if I have 2 years of local IT experience and an IT degree like FE, It possible to work at Cisco?
It really helps to have a Masters degree or substantial industry experience. Other than that you just have to apply to the open jobs you see. But from my experience, it's better if you have contact with someone in the company.
13:30 thx g!!
Yeah! I spent so much time searching for where things were defined in other files before my co-worker showed me that. I should click around on random things more often to experiment.
I never could do such coder jobs, it would make me sad and depressed
Understandable. Since high school I thought I would never be in an office job. I couldn't stand the thought of sitting at a desk all day doing some meaningless paper/computer work. What changed my mind? Realizing that a coder job is more than that. It's actually a creative job, especially if you're a front end web developer like me. You create cool things that are actually useful to people. I'm also a musician and I get the same satisfaction from building a cool website or app that people use as I do from playing a song on my guitar that people enjoy listening to. And seeing day in the life videos on RUclips where people weren't actually sitting in a cubicle all day. They had really good working conditions. Yeah, you have to sit down for some hours on your laptop and focus on writing some code. But my job is fully remote so I can do that anywhere and anytime I want. I can do it while laying in bed in my underwear if I want. Or I can go out and do it at a coffee shop. Or I can go into the office if I feel like socializing. It's the same as sitting in my room trying to write a new song on the guitar for me. But if you're doing backend software development and dealing with data it might not be the same experience. Well, the working conditions will be the same. I'm just not sure if the artistic side of it is the same or not.
Not to cause any negativity but on linkedin every developer job in japan needs cs degree
Yeah I know it probably looks like that on the surface. But there are some jobs that really just care about your skills rather than your credentials. I know because I got one and I know other people who did. You will need at least one strong point that makes you stand out. For me that was already being in Japan for 6+ years (that means I'm probably adjusted to the society here by now) and able to speak Japanese well enough to do the whole interview process in Japanese. I don't have a CS degree and I didn't have work experience. I did have some freelancing experience building basic web pages but I don't think that was a huge factor in their hiring decision.
@@WebDevJapan Thanks for the reply
this reminds me of the old youtube like in 2009 when people did a lot of desk tour and room tours, what's on my dock, what's on my pc etc. videos. pretty nice.
Thanks. I'm on a low budget and filming with a basic iphone so I won't be doing any fancy stuff here.
No sabía que tenían un Oscar Burgos programador en alguna parte del mundo programando, vaya....
jajaja no sabia quien es Oscar Burgos pero lo acabo de googlear.
bro this is so nice! ima self taught developer myself and just you posting this kind of stuff and looking at your code helped me a lot.. very good work man i inspire to be able to build something like this one day without an tutorial
Stay consistent and you'll do it!
@ appreciate it bro!
as a primarly vue/nuxt dev. I'm amazed how much more code and complex react/next projects looks to be, as i have no experience in react. (like your isJpn={isJpn}... in vue/nuxt if something is same named it becomes just :isJpn, and we tend to push object like :item into a component it instead of using separate props from the outside, unless it's a exception/override)
maybe I'm not doing it right lol But yeah there was a bit of a learning curve when I went from basic React apps to TypeScript and Next.js apps.
amazing bro
You're living my dream, I'm a student what should I do to learn to code faster
Are you majoring in CS? The times that I made the most progress was when building projects, especially projects for clients. I didn't get paid for the first freelance project I did. I offered a business to build their home page for free and it took me like 2 months to do it. The experience you get in building a project from start to finish for a client is something you can't get from a book, a tutorial or course, etc. So, that's my advice. Just get out there and build stuff for people. You might have to do it for free in the beginning but after you know what you're doing you can get money for it.
cool
11:33 I would not let a woman, or anyone for that matter, slap me in the face, especially when it looks like it's only for fun. That's just dumb dude.
Somehow I enjoyed it
😂 to each their own I guess lol
I started when i was 43 years old, built lots of things so far and from full stack development got to point for software development! its never to late if you love what you do...
Yes! That's what I'm trying to tell people. Some of my friends from high school are broke and like "I wish I had made good decisions in life like you bro" but I feel like I didn't start making the really good decisions until 3 years ago. It took only 2 years of focus to completely change my life.
Can you deploy a website built in Ruby on Hostinger?
If it's just Ruby, yes. If you're using Ruby on Rails it will be difficult but I think it's still possible. In that case I would just use something else like Heroku or AWS.
@@WebDevJapan Cheers, I have someone who already got a hosting subscription with hostinger and I work in ruby on rails so I will have to see if they work well together
