Start Judo at 5, and do Wrestling in jr high. By the time you are 18 you would have 13 years of judo and 6 years of wrestling. And you would have %90+ of BJJ going into life. And you would have better self defence. Why? You would have stand up and ground game gi and no gi grappling but your focus would be throwing the guy to the ground then run…. He would have to get up of the ground to chase you and you’d be 10 yards away and booking it.

I am still a blue belt since 2019 December. I almost completely quit after my knee surgery (skipped 2022-23 I did my comeback in this February). Now I feel very depressed : those guys who were beginners at that time when I got my belt now can catch me. Basically I feel I am the most talentless blue in our club… actually I asked my coach what if I would be a white again because I don’t feel myself enough good for being a blue but he rejected my suggestion. As a 2 stripe blue belt I have constant imposter syndrome since my comeback. Now after a few months I am getting better now, but I am still struggling.

Hey bro, you’re not asking for advice or any comments. Sound like you have a lot on your mind though. Wanted to comment about some things that are important to note. You were out for 365 days, Recovering, doing your best I’m sure. You coming back and seeing the skill gap- could be a huge realization but I’m not sure you are looking at it the right way. The imposter syndrome from what I read isn’t from the skill of the belt but for the love of bjj. Are you training to win and surpass everyone regardless of your injury and much needed recovery? Are you training to be capable and show everyone your capability? Or are you training to have fun and learn some cool pajama rolling skills? training to be a better version of yourself, a self that can depend on your jiujitsu. If the last roll you had, you were smiling and laughing for doing sum thing dumb just to see what happens? you’ll realize that it’s not that serious. Take it easy my brother. You are at the level you need to be and you will advance. It’s impossible not to. You didn’t earn your blue because of your skill (although it’s included in the belt) but because of your mindset. Keep rolling. You’re doing fine.

Just got my purple Friday night. I’m 6’4” 260 and appreciate the segment on big guys being a “good roll” and controlling their weapons. I found that control midway through blue belt by letting go of trying to “win” , relaxing a little during rounds (especially with smaller partners), thinking my way through problems, being ok with getting stuck and not trying to power through every bad position. This opened my eyes to opportunities that I was missing while frantically trying to force the little technique I knew. It helps to find a group of upper belts with the same mentality that will allow you to work in some spots in between being subbed and shut down. So that’s what I want to be for newer whites and blues. Congrats to all the new purples in the comments! 🤙🏼

I always try to remember how I looked up to purple belts as a fresh white belt. I’m so happy I was able to learn a lot and make white belts see me the same way. Now that I’m almost brown it’s kinda sad because this was the belt I was always looking forward to and I’m now leaving it behind, but I’m also getting good and closer to black

10:50 I agree with how someone is rolling being the main factor in blue to purple but I also have a check list at my school. Simply because someone may have just a few techniques but be extremely good at them. They still have a very limited game. Everyone has that one technique they can catch even on higher belts. In my mind no one should get to purple and have any huge holes in their game. Even at the stuff they don't really like or do they should still be proficient at it. Also they should be getting tapped by white or even blues regularly. Its gonna happen sometime but if they are getting tapped by lower belts regularly something is wrong.

My coach goes by the IBJJF rules for blue to purple, which requires 2 years at blue in order to get purple. I am just under 1 full year at blue and I won gold at a Grappling Industries tournament in the blue division (3 fights and won all 3 by submission). In my mind, I thought I would have received my purple belt, but my coach seems to be strict at sticking with IBJJF standards. By doing that, it made me completely forget and not care about belt colors and being promoted, and I think that is the best thing for me. Currently, I am a 2 stripe blue belt and continue to work on my growth and skill so by the time I get to purple, there will be no doubts whether I deserve it or not.

I’ve been a brown belt for a year as well now. My first goal was to get out of a white belt as fast as possible, no disrespect to white belts. I didn’t need to have the next belt to validate my jiujitsu; then there’d be times where I saw someone I competed against level up. But that went away at purple. But I had imposter syndrome at purple for sure; definitely didn’t feel ready for it. Not that I didn’t feel it at brown, because I did, and still do. But I feel like I belong. Teaching kids class, has made my game better( teaching in general will do that.) but helping as a blue, then teaching as a latter blue belt, through to purple helped me grow my game. Because teaching complex movements to kids forces you to understand it, and be able to explain it.

I think a purple belt should look amazing against all white belts, but have some blues that are a handful and even can lose to them. A brown I think should look amazing against white and blue belts. Struggle more with purples and so on. A black should look amazing against a white blue and purple. This also means that you are hanging at your own level and giving trouble to upper belts. With that said the water can be murky. Age, weight, and so on.

I put on my huge metal brace and let people crush me. I just worked bottom defense for the last 3 months. Recently I am doing crazy better, almost 90% now. I didn’t think I would have such a skill explosion again. This getting crushed and not having my right leg working at all, to now a 90% function leg has done absolute wonders for my game and my skill level. I’m having brown belts wanting me to work with them on parts of my game. It’s awesome.

I'm a seasoned blue belt. The longer I wait, the more I see the purple as a shitty belt, and the brown and black as the milestone. If the purple is the shitty belt, than the blue most be the I don't exist belt, right ? My point being, the worship around the brown is obvious, compare to the students who are actually purple and stopped seeing purple as a valuable belt...And the brown as the Godlike superpower belt.

I'm a purple belt now. The difference between me and black is the volume of competence. For example, my guard play can submit black belts, but my top game is barely adequate against purples. The road to black means all those holes are filled and my game becomes strong from all positions.

I respectfully disagree. Validation means a lot to people. It’s why people love recognition from their superiors in their jobs (even if there’s no raise or promotion). It’s why a lot of people strive for A’s in College when C’s still get degrees. So long as the belts have value (unlike in many other martial arts), people will covet them. If belts don’t matter, why would winning gold in a local comp matter? It’s not as if it it has any real value in the long run.

  • @alexrosario423

Its like people forget this is a sport- a game with rules, and it just so happens that wrestling in BJJ is hard af because there's just so much room for countering, and the aggressor puts themself in considerable risk when shooting in. Unless you have a significant standup advantage, it's simply not beneficial to look for a takedown. It uses a lot of energy, and most takedowns in BJJ (and wrestling too last time I checked) come from counters. Now when strikes are involved, you want to avoid bottom position at all costs, so of course you don't pull guard. Guard-pulling is a strategy to win a game, not a fight.
