    Awesome fluid performances Cole. I’ve listened to EW play these endlessly they are great favourites. It took me month to learn fascinating rhythm from the GG song book (2 pages) so I don’t have enough lifetimes for these ! I did print out Embraceable You but struggled to figure out the fingering (EW does not supply !)

    Confession. Well over half a century ago, I seem to remember some piano lessons as a child when I had to play a Sonatina by Clementi (I'm guessing it will have been Op.36 No.1). . . but since then, I have neither played nor listened to anything by him. That is until your stunning recording just now. My loss, for certain, as his F Sharp Minor Sonata, Op. 25 No. 5 is a revelation and is certainly confirmation of Shedlock's 1895 assertion that this work sees Clementi's "heart and soul engaged" to the full. The unexpected twists in the opening 'Allegro con espressione' with its mixture of dolce expression and capricious finger work is wittily arousing. And who could not be moved by the melancholic lyricism, piercing harmonies and poetic ornamentation of the 'Lento e patetico' second movement? The 3/8 'Presto' finale is imaginatively inventive in both its brilliance and fleetness - and I gather that the glittering 'double thirds' were his speciality (even impressing Mozart, when he was not being derogatory in venturing: "like all Italians he's a charlatan without a farthing's worth of taste" - in resentment, I believe, at being 'tied' in first position with Clementi in a 1781 Christmas Eve contest organised to entertain the Holy Roman Emperor, Joseph II). Historically, Clementi's music might be 'classical'; temperamentally, it sounds wonderfully 'romantic' as it magically bridges both genres. The sixteen and a half minutes of your performance are quite scintillating, Cole. The memory load! The technical demands in realizing such a masterpiece! This Sonata is more than a 'tour de force' - which is maybe why Mozart told his sister, Nannerl, that she shouldn’t play Clementi’s sonatas at all as, with their huge leaps, they might ruin the natural lightness of her hands. Well, Cole, hopefully your hands were unscathed by the virtuosic demands of the music . . . because for the listener, you have provided an experience that defies language to adequately express the profound impact of your emotionally charged performance. BRAVO!

    • @coleanderson3013
      @coleanderson3013 3 года назад

      Thank you Graham! It is a shame that Clementi's undeniably effective pedagogical music, and also his reputation during his lifetime as a businessman, turned off generations of music lovers to his really serious compositions. So glad that you found this piece and enjoyed it. I will definitely be uploading more Clementi on my other channel in the future!

    • @grahamtwist
      @grahamtwist 3 года назад

      @@coleanderson3013 In our current age of 'conspiracy theories' . . . maybe Mozart by design was to blame for Clementi's undeserved neglect (!). But you are certainly his champion and I really enjoyed this performance - particularly the exquisite 2nd movement. Thank you so much Cole!

  • @nsk5282
    @nsk5282 3 года назад

    Wow! This Clementi is so different from the one who's nice and simple sonatas I played many years ago. This Sonata is absolutely beautiful! Of course, you need such talent as yours to express it. Bravo!

  • @grahamtwist
    @grahamtwist 3 года назад

    As 'NSK52' has already commented, your performance here, Cole, is absolutely beautiful. I know that this is the only piano sonata by Mozart with a slow movement in a minor key. I have also seen it claimed that part of Mozart's genius lay in his ability to express the deepest thoughts and feelings with the fewest notes, and that is why it is so difficult for many performers to do full justice to his music. Well, this is definitely not the case with your execution of this masterpiece. You capture the haunting heart-break and pathos in the Adagio so exquisitely and so sensitively that you perfectly communicate all the emotion hidden in those black notes on that white paper. The finale of the sonata restores the joyful mood of the (missing) opening movement and the Presto, with its exuberance, reveals how every note Mozart wrote is a reflection of his character - affectionate, sensitive, powerful, virile and always abounding in both inspiration and an early acquired pianistic style that is beyond masterful. Thank you - and bravo!

  • @nsk5282
    @nsk5282 3 года назад

    Absolutely beautiful! The mood of 2nd movement reminds me of Mozart's 2nd movement Concerto 23. Your performance is brilliant!

    What a gorgeous arrangement played so beautifully! Your musicality is amazing!

  • @grahamtwist
    @grahamtwist 3 года назад

    This arrangement for solo piano by Earl Wild is just exquisite, ensuring all the heart-breaking emotion in the music is fully communicated to the listener. Liszt once said that “mournful and grand is the destiny of an artist”, seemingly referring to the large proportion of artists who have suffered emotionally and mentally for their art. Sergei Rachmaninoff is known to have been afflicted with depression his whole life, but his is a success story as he seems to have been able to deal with it - and not only did he mostly overcome this disabling burden, his management of it fueled his composing. Perhaps without such pain, he could not have written music as beautiful as 'Vocalise'? But your performance of this music is just a sheer joy to hear, Cole. Your technical brilliance allied with the emotional depth of interpretation you bring to Rachmaninoff's compositions enables us to experience this music in a totally immersive way. Thank you. Thank you.
