Jerry Cantrell talking about breaking his hand in 2001
This is from Jerry’s 2002 promotional interview for Degradation Trip.
He was asked about the worst physical pain he ever felt, then tells the story of how he broke his hand in the middle of a 2001 tour.
He broke his hand on May 3, 2001 after playing the Crown Royal Festival in the Field at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky (the home of the Kentucky Derby). Then he played one show after that, with his broken hand in cast and unable to play guitar, on May 5, 2001 in Atlanta. All shows after that were canceled, then Jerry returned to the stage on June 30, 2001 after recovering from the injury.

A 2001 performance of Atone before Jerry finished the song. I’m unsure of the exact date this performance took place. Jerry said in a handful of interviews that he had the song in the works for over 20 years until he finally released it on his third solo album “Brighten”. I am recovering from fracturing my finger and messing the tendon, I did not have sugerory, it was in a sling for 8 weeks and I have to wear it at night for a month. My finger is bent but I am able to play guitar thank God, it hurts, but I have to work on it every day. Thanks for the video it will help me heal.

I need Jerry!! Badly! I am going through asbestos abatement in my house right now. Botched!!!! My husband recently passed away after 41years- he had a TBI and a broken neck after 360 in the hospital he passed...my husband was asbestos abatement certified! My basement flooded right afterwards (passing). He was in construction. Ugh. I miss him terribly!! 😢 💔 . I need him !! We were big AIC fans! I am still! Ugh! Jerry Cantrell please 🙏 help me! Insurance sucks 😪.

I sadly don’t have the exact lyrics. The chorus is the same as the modern version of the song, but I sadly don’t have the verses. Jerry never released the lyrics for this version because it was just played randomly at some live shows.

I love those open barre chord voicings in the verse parts of the songs. Great job on the singing. I wish I could play an accompanying guitar part with you on some AIC songs. I own a couple of acoustic guitars.
