the 25 books I read in June and July ✨
This reading wrap up is a bit delayed coming to booktube but better late than never. A good mix of everything from graphic novels and manga, non-fiction, SFF, and short books with all the horror and thrillers from #giallojuly! Also, my sunroom is usually silent except for birds but on this day, the jets, construction, and dogs came out to play so sorry for some interruptions.

    • @user-tr9pi6fv6u
      @user-tr9pi6fv6u Месяц назад

      @@aveyclub Hi! So...I recently realized that there are some really interesting ties between Oedipus Rex and Things Have Gotten Worse: 1. The relationship between Zoe and Agnes is extremely similar to the situation to the prophecies in Oedipus Rex: In the play Oedipus Rex, the city of Thebes is cursed by a plague that is a punishment for the death of the former king Laius. The only way it can be stopped is by revealing Laiu's killer and expelling them from Thebes. Meanwhile, Oedipus is dealing with he own prophecy: he is doomed to kill his father and marry his mother. Zoe and Agnes have an abusive relationship that is also a Sub/Dom dynamic. However, each one has a different idea as to how they want this dynamic to work. Agnes wants Zoe to be her partner and to have a symbolic child with her (Her kink is a way of healthily processing childhood trauma). However, Zoe wants a Sub/Dom dynamic where Zoe is a Mommy Dom (she takes on a maternal role while Zoe is "baby." ) When Agnes tries to bring up her idea of having a "child" with Zoe, the dynamic becomes incestuous, and Zoe lashes out by brutally punishing her symbolically (ex: commanding Agnes to crush a symbolic child with a rock...which Agnes didn't have to do, but is still compelled to do anyway do to her desperate affection for Zoe). Agnes is Oedipus, and Zoe is Jocasta (Oedipus's mother and wife with whom he has several children). Zoe is also the curse, giving commands to Agnes, who blindly follows them. 2. Do you deserve your eyes: during the climax for Oedipus Rex, Oedipus is trying to figure out the cause of the plague, while at the same time ignoring the warning signs in denial that it was him who caused all of this. In despair, once he was forced to face the reality of the situation, Oedipus gouges out his own eyes. Its only after doing this that he accepts reality for what it actually is. Meanwhile, in Things Have Gotten Worse..., Agnes is repeatedly asked "Do you deserve your eyes?" The situation between Agnes and Zoe is very complex in that while we know who Agnes is (a vulnerable woman who was badly abused as a child, and who desperately wants some kind of loving relationship and a chance to have a healthy family), but we don't know who Zoe is. Their emails are all online. For all we know, Zoe may not even be a woman. They may be a guy fetishizing Zoe for being a lesbian, and is pushing his fantasies on her (the crushing of the bug (crushing fetish) and the tapeworm (bug catching fetish)). Its also highly possible that Zoe may really be the real deal, but doesn't really believe that Agnes is actually obeying Zoe's commands in real life (its all just online roleplay). Agnes is so desperate for a connection for love from someone else that she degrades and self harms just to keep Zoe's attention. Eventually, Zoe realizes the situation is real and actually affects a real person, and abandons Agnes...but Agnes doesn't. Agnes is so blinded by desperation and madness that she still keeps responding to Zoe long after they are gone. In despair, its suggested that Agnes crawls into her closet with their "child" (Oedipus' fulfilled prophecy), and gouges out her eyes with her apple peeler. It's then that the audience faces the answer to Zoe's question: Doe's Agnes deserve her eyes? Does a character who is blind to reality deserve to bear witness to it? Or is it better to be blind, and yet live with the despair that is reality? We the reader don't get to decide: Agnes does, and apparently, she believes she doesn't believe she deserves her eyes. However, unlike Oedipus, who accepts his reality and finds peace in it, Agnes also decides that she can't live with reality either. So there's my Ted Talk for today!

    Heyyyyy! Found you via Bert & Siân (and I think you and I follow each other on Letterboxd). I’m in Melbourne. Definitely tipping isn’t a thing in Australia. Sometimes you can in hospitality situations, but it’s up to you (if you receive good service), and not a mandatory thing. Tipping in any other situation like haircuts isn’t something I’ve ever done or heard of. If you have a regular hairdresser for example you might buy them a gift at the festive season or tip them at that time of the year - but that’s your choice. We’re pretty easy going here! Love getting to know you via your channel 😸

(this is the kinda commitment I admire) 👁️👁️ I love End Play, thanks for this reminder! Saw it a few years ago but it's due a rewatch 🎬 Happy giallo/birthday July! X Bert

      Thank you!! I love a fun makeup to lean into my clownlike tendencies 😊 Unfortunately, it seems that Ozploitation went a different route than giallo where we don't get too many movies like that. I do have an Aussie neo-giallo on my watchlist as well but it's supposed to be pretty bad 🙈 (and I think like proper bad and not the bad we love)

      You’re so kind! The only Sodergren I’ve read is The Forgotten Island so I’ll have to get to this one. Absolutely My Year of Rest and Relaxation. It’s definitely a favorite vibe for books so I’m happy to have a new one recommended. 💚

    We’ve officially launched Booktube Slay.0 with this video! I am actually interested in The Membranes now. I need hyperpop vibes in my dystopian scifi. On top of Waif, John Dollar by Marianne Wiggins. It’s about a group of girl scouts who cannibalize a dude on an island. Female liberation is so beautiful.

    I read this today and hooo boy. What a ride. I agree with you that it's not inherently exploitative of the LaRocca to write a horror story about queer women! I feel like a lot of people who read this book saw "oh, lesbians?" and picked it up without any regard for it being extreme, dark, horror, so they bounced off of it and blamed that on the book rather than their tastes. I do wish there was *slightly* more clarity on how we got from Agnes's last email to the Author's Note at the beginning, but the more I think about it, the more I think that's intentional.

      Totally agree! It could have been cool to get more stories from that corner of the web but I’m happy to get a weird little mood of a story in any case.
