Space Marine 2 - Gun Combo Beginner Tips
I've only progressed up to this lift and I thought I'd make a quick video about how guns work in this game because I think it's less conventional than what people are used to. It's very similar to Wanted Dead but with less speed and cancelling, though you can cancel animations early to dodge or parry I don't think it can be used offensively. The mix of guns and melee, the focus on clever resource use, like Wanted Space Marine has more depth to it than meets the eye and modern co-op beat 'em ups are rare.
Kill times using guns are much faster from what I've seen and to me faster is better, it's also simply more fun for me.

I think this is a good enough run for me to move on from doing this. It's on ng but I tried to emulate a weapon setup and health level you would have on a fresh file. Grenades were not allowed to be used.

      It's fun, really good in co-op. My only issue is the rpg side mode isn't fully to my tastes and some of the guns feel a bit weak. Short but games like this are.

    At 3:05 I used this strat during my AKUMU playthrough and it 1 shots regular enemies about 90% of the time but it doesnt hurt to have at least 1 or 2 critical rate upgrades for the pistol (I say 90% because I have had moments where an enemy survived the first shot somehow)

      I'd love to know the specifics of the mechanics broken down. In my head the pistol crit upgrades stack with the punch crit bonus, so maybe with the boosts 2 punches guarantee a kill but I don't think it's exactly like that. I do think they interact though.

      Yes it's very tough, easy is quite easy though. Then on top of that if you want an easy time you could upgrade flash bolts and use that as a crutch. I love this game but I'll be honest the reasons I like it will be reasons for other people to hate it, it might not be for you but I find people enjoy it more when they understand the mechanics better.

    I really don’t get the hate on this game. I love it and play trough it every once in a while. I had no idea about the bomb freeze and the critical hits modifiers. But I agree the last harpoon upgrade is not really necessary. Laura is pretty easy if you do it right with the matches. Good tips!

      It's a game for a certain sort of person to the detriment of many other people. Like anchovies on a pizza. It's also really hard at times and I don't think people like difficulty, it makes them mad at the game when they die. Every other Halloween for me I give it a playthrough, it has staying power.

    Besides the Harpoon Bolt to Level 4, what are other upgrades you think should be priority for early game/mid game/late game? Thank you for this series!

      First thing you should know is that you can't mess up when it comes to upgrades. The game has some of your options start with a high base damage, grenades and explosive bolts so even without upgrades you will have good boss killing options. With matches and other one hit kills you can kill groups without upgrades. Most people would say to upgrade sprint to 6 seconds because to start you will be bad at managing stamina and more stamina is always good. It's cheap too. Stock upgrades can be useful because the game will only drop an item you have room for, obviously more ammo is nice. You don't need to go all the way to the max amount and with shotgun it becomes cheaper to upgrade ammo capacity over stock at a certain point. More matches is the most important even just getting a few more. Flash bolt and stealth kill will play the game for you if you upgrade that. It's that strong, I would recommend not using it because it's not fun. Enemy breakpoints were designed in a way where as the game progresses they need more damage to be killed by the things that would one shot them at the start. Most upgrades on damage give you back one shot kills to basic enemies, like haunted vs explosive bolts or shotgun headshots (this still needs melee first I think). Shotgun with damage upgrades is a great boss killer too. The primary thing I recommend is pistol fire rate and accuracy upgrades. It's very cheap to boost the fire rate to double what you started with and that alone makes the weapon feel much more fun. If you boost the damage and fire rate to max you'll have your basic gun dealing damage at six times the rate you started with, so it's even good vs bosses. Out of all the guns to upgrade I'd say this changes the most by upgrading. Many people like the crit upgrade on the pistol.

    Great insight into the combat system, thanks! Steam reviews grow increasingly unreliable, since most people play it as a cover shooter and complain "gun too weak, sword too strong", not understanding that this is the purpose. It's not supposed to be realistic, guns are just stagger tools to allow you to come close, where the slashing begins. I'd say this game reminds me of Vanquish in how generally misunderstood it is

      Yeah vanquish is the point of reference for me too, you can play them both as cover shooters but you'd be missing out on the things that make them unique and fun. Guns are also combo extenders and for de-limbing too. Game is sold as a budget title these days it's hard not to recommend now.

      @jimjam694 very hard? Like Japanese hard ? I didn't beat it on Japanese hard but i didn't play it on normal. Idk I literally only had a hard time on the 2nd boss like I lost so much and I was worried the rest would be like that but the next boss was simple. Or maybe I got better haha

      Oh you would've played the patched version, lucky you and your bonus move. You could've shot your pistol while sliding and then cancelled the slow recovery for that move by holding block, whereas we from before couldn't do any of that. Glad this helped!

    Video makes it look easy. I'm mostly fighting the camera and the terrible controls. I don't know why modern games don't let people remap the controls to something better. I particularly hate how the kick attack is tied to the left stick and the finisher is a weird two-button with the same hand press.

      You get used to it but I hate left stick clicking too. Games lately have been patching in remapping long after I've put the original controls into muscle memory. It helps that I've played stuff like this before.

      That's like 90% of action gaming lol. Seriously though it's clear to me they put a lot of thought into these things. Block cancelling doesn't happen by accident, things like that are put into the game on purpose to either make the game feel more responsive or to add depth to the game. When I stunlock the ninja it's because they intentionally put in a counterattack window that requires timing to hit. What I'm doing there is a very basic version of what you can do to exploit that window. You don't get that hit for free and it can go very badly if you mess it up. When it comes to gun and sword chaining there's details that let you know they thought about that too. There are only so many sword hits before the enemy exits hitstun and can counter. There are also only so many gunshots before the enemy counters. I have to place my shots in the head or I get punished. I also still have to dodge other enemies. When it comes to killing the big guy using all that stuff together then I have to burn meter to pull that off easily. So there's resource management involved there too. I also of course have to counter correctly. This game isn't perfect but the combat system is surprisingly open and that gives you a good deal of freedom in how you play. The things you exploit here take skill and timing and if they weren't in the game then it would be a much more shallow experience. Most of these types of exploits I would hope to see in any good action game.

      All personal preference. I think it's a bit of a trick because for the price of that one upgrade you could boost so many other things and have more varied options. Meanwhile non fire harpoons are very strong by themselves.

      You right. It one hits almost everything and is a blast to use. So far I just focused on pistol and crossbow and it has served me well, along with max matches.

    You know the part I don't get is how the gaming community and press has little to no memories of the past... None of the mechanics in this game are new... It's all been done... Hell I'm currently playing a game considered trash tier...bound by flame... Which allows you to cancel out of all of your attacks with block/parry... In fact, it's the only way to get through the game using to handed weapons... Since the stance lacks a dodge /roll. And just yesterday I was giving another go to the lost Deadpool game... Which allows you to go straight from multi -chained combos into ADS... Allowing you to air juggle knocked back enemies... All these things eluded the gaming press and douchebag gamers... To give this game a crap review...😏

      Yeah when I start playing a game like this I just run through all the stuff that worked in similar games. Then go through testing how enemies react to certain moves and so on, I don't mind if I die doing that. I don't know, I think it's an older gaming generation thing. Action games are made to be very intuitive now where before I think we were expected to know more genre conventions and be open to having to learn new complex mechanics. Now having to learn how to play is treated like a design flaw. People get so mad at dying now, I don't get it. At least that's how I see it. That and there's nowhere to discuss figuring out how a game works which makes it tough to get started.

      Thanks, it's not a game for everybody but it's a personal favourite. It dips in quality about 2/3rds of the way through but it picks up again. Sequel is totally different, more rpg adventure game. On subscribing, I'm not trying to talk you out of it but I'll rarely post a video and it'll only ever be for either obscure/old action games or very niche things for more popular action games.

    Great video with lots of good tips. At 1:52 though, there's no need to shoot that. A melee punch will save a bullet.

      That's some serious survival horroring. When I'd do challenge runs, shotgun only and so on, I'd chuck bottles at the high up ones because the ammo would be so tight. On a regular playthrough, the way ammo drops work it's not such a bad idea to be a little free with the pistol.

    good video series! at 2:54 is your handgun at base level damage since you're doing this on a ng+ file? i am kinda suspicious about the 100% crit thing, if that is the case it has to work on nm and akumu too, gonna test it.

      I think it was unupgraded, this is very old. At the time I used to have a video just to showcase this point where I would run through a level, punch a person three times and then headshot. Then I kept a tally of all the instant kills that occurred, which was a 100% success rate. That video was boring and long, so I lined up 5 guys here because I thought it would be very hard for all five to crit randomly. I could remake it I suppose because on ps5 it's easier but at the time I was using melee into crit a ton, it was reliable. The only issue I see is potential version differences, this could be a bug where melee counts as headshots on certain versions. I'm fairly certain this works on xbox because I played that out of curiosity once and this video is on ps4. So if it doesn't work on pc then that's the outlier.

      @@jimjam694 I just did a small amount of testing myself on the Epic games version after watching this and it does seem like crit chance increases with how many times you punch. With my un-upgraded handgun I'm getting ~10% crits without punches, crits around half the time after 1 punch, crits ~75-80% of the time after 2 punches, and crits 100% of the time after 3 punches.

      @@luciano_luna1941 It's just how RUclips works, I'm not on much and I don't make much so the algorithm doesn't favour my vids. Then the stuff I make is for a very niche audience too. At the start you could search my videos by name and still not get them. I'm fine with that because this channel was made as a reference to discuss mechanics on forums and so on, it can be hard to convey what you are doing in game with just text. I hope you beat the house, even if you aren't doing knife only I think things like the movement shown in the video where I go in and out of melee range to bait a hit are useful to practice. It's easier to counter at max range.

    So what is this actually based on? I don't get it. It's not a damage threshold because of the fully upgraded pistols. Is there any way to predict when exactly an enemy will be stunned? Also, are you sure that was a glitch, because I noticed you were shooting the guy in each leg once as opposed to ten times in the same. Perhaps if you hit different stagger spots, it builds it up faster?

      Yeah it's a glitch. The way it was working was the first time I encounter them they would take an appropriate amount of bullets to stun but if I reload the save then they would be broken like in the video. I was testing things a bunch of times with a bunch of weapons so if I couldn't reload I couldn't really test. Tried him at different points in the game, same glitch. Changing leg doesn't seem to matter that's what the bit about stun building body wide was about. If I were to guess I'd say each enemy has a stun value, let's say 100. Shooting the head does more stun or maybe legs just need the stun meter filled more. The gun probably rolls a number between say 34 and 100 for example, upgrading damage probably doubled those numbers. Something like that. It could be simpler, it could just be a steady 1 or 2 value based on whether or not the gun crits but I think the crit rate is 5% and it fluctuates way more than that. Can you predict? Sort of, if you know the max range then you know that that final bullet has to stun. You can build stun by shooting the body because it can't stun and then shoot the final bullet to the leg or head for a guarantee stun. Early game you can just assume it'll take the max bullet amount and go for that because the range isn't that big. Late game it gets a bit silly when the range is 4-9. Stuff like chaining stuns on mini bosses is completely reliable. Outside of leg stuns you're as likely to kill as you are to stun and that means if you aren't using punisher then melee is completely unreliable. What I should test more is body to leg shots. To check how body parts build stun like you say. There's a chart showing weapon stats out there somewhere but it lists red9 as being a better stunner, did stagger better though, and that was not my experience. So I'm guessing laser adds a bunch of stun, which was tested in video. Checking out the charts info by testing if shotgun just had 2x stun like it said and it seemed true. So chart makes this vid a bit redundant.

It does make me wonder if Capcom balanced the new mechanics around the old ones, because it shows that leg shots do half of the damage and heashots do 1.2. So let's say that you can't always go for headshots because of helmets, but if stuns take so many bullets to pull off (especially on islanders), would it be more ammo efficient to just shoot them repeatedly in the chest until they die?

      @@4i4kov Yes it would be more efficient unless you really need a stun, like for shields. To me they botched the melee gameplay here because when it takes more bullets to stun than kill it's hard to understand where melee fits in. It's like it's meant to be a random bonus and not a real tool to be used.

      ​@@jimjam694 BTW, I just noticed - even though you say it takes less head shots to stun, with that enemy in particular, the numbers don't seem to reflect it. Perhaps the bull head acts as slight armor?

    OK good so it wasn't just me. I've been trying to do a no guns run with the knife predominantly (some nades and the bolt thrower with explosives), it worked in hardcore difficulty but on professional it's been hell.

      This video was knocked out fairly quickly just for my own curiosity, it wasn't originally intended to be shared. So there are a few things that should be noted here. There are a few different enemies with different stun rates on the island, the guy in the vid has higher resistance than others by about say 30-50% more stun resistance. Then the gun isn't fully kitted out. Everything being perfect with the gun that guy would take 2-5 headshots vs a villagers 1-2. 4-9 legshots to a villagers 2-3. People like him are not uncommon. A regular island guy takes 1-3 headshots and 2-7 legshots from a fully upgraded laser equipped handgun. So a very large increase in stun res that will make your knife run much harder but not quite as bad as in the video, though I suppose with a knife it would be even worse.

      @@jimjam694 It's been so bad that, even with speedrunner strats and two grenades and a flash, I cannot get a quick village in 4 hours of attempts last night. It basically always seems to go to timeout.

      @@lexxurevg1 That sounds brutal, not a huge help but I know you can parry and then run behind people for an instant kill. You probably know that. Knife breakage will make what you are doing so hard.

      @@jimjam694 Well I've been at it for about a week and I'm finally at Krauser (5 hours into the run, I've been super slow grabbing treasures). I think the run is doable, probably sub 3 hours, but I will need to route how much money is necessary for the run. I basically fully upgrade the knife around the time of water room with 30 spinels. I should probably get the damage mod to test headshot damage vs leg damage on these late game enemies, but you end up just running past so many of them that it doesn't matter (I skip wrecking ball, that spot was hell on earth on hardcore difficulty)

      Just make up your own story like I did. Woman's brain put in a 7ft tall robot, mind wiped. She police. Humans dressed as bots used as slaves. She police discovers. Man different police cover up discovery by try kill woman police. Woman kill man but left alone. Man police trap her. She phone ersatz son, real son gone but no memory, she cry.

    This game is a sad story. It is definetely fun and has a lot of good things, but a lot of bad things too. It has suprisingly decent story and worldbuilding, realy fun combat, yet everything has some kind or rushed and unpolished feel to it. If this game had bigger budget and more stuff it would've been an absolute banger.

      Yep, games like this are always sad cases. People compare this to vanquish or Godhand but its budget was probably much lower and those games didn't get a sort of hate wave low budget games tend to get.

      man, they could probably use that budget elsewhere and make the it stylish art style instead of hyper realistic one. kinda make it look less polished than even that of vanquish

    Amazing video, great job! I loved the game, I've beaten it 3 times already, on hard, jp hard and jp hard ng+. On my second playthrough I found out that when you do a full charage attack, and she does 2 spins, and if you miss on the first spin, but hit a normal enemy on secod one, then it will be a 100% delimb on all normal enemies, including the brown ninjas from the final levels. So I used it as much as possible. There's also a fun combo tactic that I saw many people use against the black and white ninjas, where you throw a flame granade on their back, and then you hit them so that they'd bounce into flames, then you hit again and they bounce again until the flame runs out or ninja dies.

      I saw someone do this flame bounce after I made the video and I found it unreliable to pull off but cool. That's the thing with a video like this is that you learn new things that are cool but then they aren't in the video. If I went back to this game I'd be a bit rusty but I'd still like to do a brief section of the game to show off a new loop for the double katana guys. Full charge, shoot for 2 head staggers, full charge etc it's a loop too and much faster but you do risk chip damage. Team mates can mess up combos by triggering ai responses but that new loop is more reliable with a team. Things too like using a legless enemy to trigger your grenade, very situational but cool if you pull it off. I think maybe I didn't impress just how good charge attack is too because it isn't necessarily clear when you start out just how useful that move is, it should almost be your most used sword attack. It's that good.
