"Neptune Day" is celebrated, during which shaving
your hair off is regarded as a "new beginning."
On the 130th voyage, 23 women decided to shave their heads.
This project is about their journey of being hairless in a society
that sees women's hair as an essential part of their femininity.
I have shortened interviews a lot so there may be unexpected cuts, and I was a little sick when I did the second interview.

I am a Man. As as child I always wanted to have had my head shaved. But in the situation and family that I was living in , it was forbidden. The on my second trip to Canada in 1976 a lady barbar offered to do free of charge providing I agree to be completely shaved. I chickened out, but that's a decission , looking back that I regret. However again in Canada in 1998, a lady barber did shave me bald. It was a bit of a shock, but I soon realised how comfortable it was. Also, I believe it encourages a person's hair to grow back thick. Last week I had no fear or compution to be shaved bald again. I find it very refreshing.
When is helena?
Sorry if this sounds unappreciative, but there's nothing more horrific than a bunch of people with shaved heads. Check out boot camp. Check out the old insane asylums. Check out Nazi concentration camps. They didn't just shave people's heads due to lice. The Nazis didn't give a rat's ass about the inmates having lice. They shaved them to dehumanize them. Hair is not just an essential part to their femininity. It is an essential part of their humanity. That being said, I do think it's gutsy to shave your head when you're not going bald.

If women want to shave off their beautiful hair, it is fine with me. But to call this a slap at society or a phantom "patriarchy" is laughable. If you really believe this, you will remain bald. But you will not. 1984 Groupthink is at work here.

I absolutely love this! It's such an intriguing and pulverizing topic of discussion to tackle! I have so many stories of women experiencing shaving their heads! And one co worker who wanted to shave her waist length hair but after sharing her thoughts with her peers and boyfriend, she got talked out of it! She ended up cutting it to shoulder length. It's crazy how other people take ownership of another persons hair! The other story I wished to share was when I was travelling in America, I met an Australian woman who did shave her head for charity! Her boyfriend at the time didn't want her to do it (because he felt like she would look like a boy and he would be teased for having a bald girlfriend) and threatened to break up with her if she did! SO she went through with the shave and he split up with her! But when her hair started to grow back long, he wanted to get back with her! To which she said no! I think all of you that shaved your heads are beautiful inside and out! It's very admirable thing to do in a society which expects women to have hair! (And mostly long hair) You are awesome! I am guessing because of this being a project, that there will be more interviews of some of the other women? I would love to get the opinions of some of the other people on the ship about their thoughts, especially the guys Thank you for producing this and taking on this topic! I look forward to future videos!
