SUP BABIES!!
It's the tail end of busy season!
How you doin'?
Seriously, September, October & November are historically the busiest times on the east coast. Summer is over and the weather is perfect for outdoor ceremonies, and we get FLOODED with weddings and other events this time of year.
I've struggled a TON with burnout in the past, especially after we weren't allowed to work for so long.
In this video, I share my best tips for balancing DJ life with being a wedding professional: things like music prep, maximizing timing, mindset in busy season, multiple events in one weekend, content creation, and regular life...even when things get super busy! DJ GIG LOG: We do SNL! 2 Events in 24 hours
My mf guy!
You might have mentioned this in a previous video sorry. What camera are you recording with?
Cool Wedding nice job 😎😎😎
♡♡♡♡
Nice video POV. What camera are you using? What mount are you using? How are you mounting it high? Thanks for sharing your skills!
This was with the Insta360 x3, I actually lvoee it so much I just upgraded! I've been using Small Rig mounts, hey have a ton of options, but the one I use currently is : amzn.to/4flCWX3 Generally we have it mounted to our table using the invisible stick into a laptop mount hole, but this venue we had a spot to attach to on a railing behind us, I'd say it was about 7ft up. we also attached it to the speaker later, the video is in my channel members only section. Happy to share! Thanks for the great questions!
Will it work with Tidal too?
Not currently, it is linked to beatport and beatsource so maybe in the future!
@ yea Tidal would be dope! That would put this software in a whole other category than Serato studio and Ableton completely!!
❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙌😎🤗🤘😙💪😂
Thanks for this, Kev! That Pop Punk Set is pure fire 🔥... Favourite crowd for sure. Most times I slide those in towards the end of the night to NOT piss off the grandparents 😅. Another great night and as stated before: I very much like the venue! Giving bar-vibes which I consider a good thing.
Thank you man!! That’s my favorite stuff to play, and you gotta run with it when you can haha
Love the venue! Seems like an awesome space that provides an intimate atmosphere. Also: small people let the party seem incredible even when fewer people are on the dancefloor (but I will comment on that on your other upload). I'm with you regarding setup challenges, but hey ... what don't we do for our couples, right? ;)
Dudeeee yes! I love intimacy on the dancefloor. Force interactions create for great nights 🙂 Hittin you back on IG now!
2 questions 1. Which record pools (or other places) do you look to for your music? Been having trouble finding a good backlog of music 2. Is Rekordbox a good choice for open format DJs? Heard the stems are iffy but in the heat of the moment does anyone even notice/care Thanks!
Sup brother! Good qs. I generally use DMS, BPMSupreme, and clubkillers for some heavier stuff. I have been trying to play the originals a little more, but I also like specific producers so their individual patreons are great too. Guys like Beatbreaker, Deville, Eyecon, Even Steve are awesome ones to check out. As far as recordbox I actually have never used it. From what I do know it is a little more live production friendly than most other software. How’s your experience been with it?
I love you. You're wrong though. I sleep on an EXPENSIVE BED, not money... that's on the floor :D
I shred my money and turn it into memory foam GET REKKED
Great points bro!!! It's tough sometimes. Especially when you have a day job as well! We just had Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and back to my day job on Monday! Ugh! LOL! These glasses bluetooth to the 360? Which ones are these? That's dope!
My man thank you!! I know we already talked about the glasses but for anyone else, I actually link them to my phone and layer the recording !
Noice wun mate!!! That We are Family Edit! Nice!
Hell ya! Pretty sure it’s Eyecon epic intro!
Nice gig log video.
Thanks for watching! Appreciate ya 🙏🏼
Hi DJHiKevin. That walk in the storage facility was trippy.
Hahaha had to take a few laps where no one could see or hear me 😂
“Oh good, it’s still there” got me 😂
New school is so easy. If it was traditional to me 1200s were simply necessary back in the day.
Relatively yes it’s easier but easier isn’t always worse, screw drivers are great but I’ll take a drill 99/100. Shouts to the 1200s tho I’ll play on those every time if I have a choice.
@ try thumb wrestling a guy that only using hand tools and never power tools
@ i'll keep my eyes out for them
I think the hardest thing about doing back to back is the voice. That's really the only part of me that I feel very real wear on. Otherwise...you get into "go" mode and you just make it happen. On the prep side? Have your library organized AF. I use Vibo and the hours I've spent organizing, removing duplicates, labeling special version...etc...has allowed me to whittle down my music prep from an hour to mere minutes. Preparation is key. I had a last minute wedding come in for this last Saturday (for one of my DJs to do - I was already booked). It took me one hour on Zoom with the couple and I had it all planned, prepped, and playlists made for every major portion of the day for my DJ so he could literally just walk in and crush it (he was on the call with me, of course). What I need to really get better at is taking days off from being available. Having a day with the family where I don't answer emails or phone calls, I don't text people, I don't check things...just disconnect. I need to work on that for '25. Or now that we're nearing the end of '24.
That's a great point about the voice! I try to pace myself, but it's hard to avoid a little strain, especially since we spend so much time in the highest gear. I do miss Vibo 😞 The family time is so important. I’m definitely victim to forgetting about my close friends and family in the busy times. So much of what we do feels so lonely, but we gotta work at that as much as everything else!
Appreciate you sharing so much!
I just reached the end of my season. I was feeling the burn, but I wanted to be sure to give my couples the time and attention they deserve. I like to break the planning into two chunks, the specific moments and the dance requests. Then one day prior I check my own work just to double confirm nothing was missed. I really appreciate the advice on maximizing each event, and I think I needed that reminder. Thanks for making this honest and sincere video.
Aw GINA!! I bet you are crazy organized. Honestly these videos serve as an accountability method so much for me, but I'm glad to hear my message shines through <3
Congrats on ending the season too!!!
Hell MF yeah, Broski. 3 in a row is brutal. BUT, if you have an assistant to share the load and keep ya company they're totally doable. Been rocking 3 in a row solo for a long time and it's grueling. Mad respectttttttttttttt keep the dank vids coming, My G!
My doooood get some assistance lol. For me its the mental load, especially if one of the events is disorganized or something. I could shlup gear all day and drive across the country but get so tired from the coordination stuff
Appreciate you all literally watching me walk and talk. Stay successful and hope you are crushing your season. WE OFFICIALLY HAVE ONLY 9 WEDDINGS LEFT FOR THE YEAR! but 4 in 5 days lol.
Great video. I'm actually sitting here on Sunday Morning (11/3), doing prep for my Wedding on 11/16, I like to type up my day of cheat sheet (I condense our online planner into a 1-2 page PDF and send it to the other vendors) 2 weeks before the Wedding. Then throughout the week, I put together my playlists for the following weekend, while playing the current week's playlists in the background. .
hahah good morning happy daylight savings 😂😂 thanks for sharing your process, success rewards preparation 🙏
Prepping has always been the reason every wedding is a success. I spend all week on each mix. Triple checking every detail.I remember when we used to have “wedding hangovers” and at the same time “wedding withdrawal” lol. It’s so addictive yet when that day off comes after so many in a row…is the best feeling & well needed healing time. 🤙🏻🤘🏼
hahaha today is a bit of a hangover but that might have been the after wedding buddy beers lol You put it all in Brent! appreciate that about you 💪
You're a good person. Thanks for caring.
NO U R <3
Agree Broski.
I agree that skills are more important than new fancy equipment. With that said, for those of us that are skilled, better equipment, better presentation, equals more money.
100% eventually you have to level up for your own peace of mind and for the clients!
So for the cocktail hour thing. I have a wireless setup that runs aux from my main setup to the cocktail speaker, so I don’t even have to leave my booth to make an announcement. I’m still learning to dial it on to sound good, but it makes it so easy
oh shhoooot great move! Our ceremonies are often in different rooms but I can think of a few times this would work great!
Love the Community reference 😂 #sixseasonsandamovie
hahaha one of my favorite shows of all time!
All hail lord SYNC BUTTON!!!!!
mmm yes i kiss them both every night before bed😙
Well said man!
DUDE <3
Great hot topics mate! I'm def on your side with absolutely all of that! What I'm not on your side with is how your camera searches for focus after it finds you... Like BRO, WTF? lol Since you're not moving, can you not lock in that focus to your and turn off auto focus? Just sayin... Keep killin it w/ the videos man!
hahahah I was so MAD at that when it focused. Teddi uses AF on the job and I don't at home. Will def look into it for all of us lol
all good advice
Thanks!! Appreciate you checking out so many videos!
i think the sync debate is done now or at least it should be
I hope so!!
What speakers are you using?
EVOX 12s!
Its funny when i hear DJ's cringe about playing line dances. Go to any black wedding, BBQ and dont play a line dance. See what happens.
OOF hahaha The fact of the matter is, a line dance is a very popular routine that can be done to ANY SONG. Didn't they do the electric slide to "I Will Survive" in the Replacements?? Great point though, thanks for the comment!
I HAVE 2 BACKUP WITH ONLINE SERVICES MY PHONE AS A HOTSPOT AND I HAVE A BATTERY POWER STARLINK SETUP WHEN I HAVE OUTSIDE GIG AND NO POWER OR WIFI NEAR I HAVE NEVER HAD IT FAIL ON ME WHEN I USE IT.
god damn thats some redundancy, sounds like you got it covered! Niceeee
Maybe you can talk about stems? I don't think it's super controversial, but important to discuss
OH i definitely will thanks Ciulla!
A great vlog! I’m peroanly over the gig vlogs that showcase every song that the Dj plays for the reception. Talk about set up , gear some mixing makes for great content
Appreciate that, I'm trying to show more of the work (and "life" for lack of a better term) that goes into a gig!
Next topic Mac vs PC laptops for DJing
added to the list! I'll have to rock some serato on my desktop to get some experience 😂
More nuggets!!! Thx fam.... you hit on a lot of the topics people don't want to speak on, and oddly some of the stuff I do use too. In my opinion to sum it up it is like apple vs android, you have apple dj's and android dj's. Both are dope; but it's what your preference is. What kills me is age old fight of lightbar vs spots with lighting. both work but people hate lightbars and people hate spots!!! You are right there are so many myths too.... like you said and The great DJ Jazzy Jeff said, it don't matter what you rocking on as long as the party is rocking. Salute dude and you need a podcast too!!!!!
DO NOT COMPARE ME TO JJ!!! LMAOOO Appreciate you Grif. You absolutely get everything. same wavelength week after week, I appreciate you!!
I earned the sync button 😂
this is a great perspective. rock that party 🤘
Killer advise my man. Great info!
For the wedding Djs -One thing that’s been a huge problem for me lately is getting an 8 to 12 hour playlist for the dance floor portion, even after explaining to my couples we only have 2 1/2 to sometimes 3 hours of dancing. Which songs are more important? If they would just give me a direction to go in with genres or at minimum an hour playlist It would make it so much easier not to have to download so much music, to which a large number of those tracks get trashed considering I know I won’t be using them.
Hey Brent, pretty simple imho. First of all ask them if they use spoti ... Some of my couples insist on making a playlist for the wedding, but most of all I like to go through their other playlists ;). There's always some gym-playlist containing ALL of the songs the like but never would tell you about (Backstreet Boys someone? :P). If they DON't use spoti (or any other streaming service) go into detail during your session with them. What kind of music do you like? Rock? Okay. May sound silly, but define "Rock" for me real quick. Are we talking Bon Jovi, Chubby Checker, The Killers, Fall Out Boy ... what is Rock for you? Same for people that tell you they "just want something to dance to". Are we talking standards like waltz or rumba, are we talking discofox (the older ones may remember!) or 2000's party pop? Most of my couples thankfully will go through this process with me. Then I'll go and - if we're still not quite clear - create a playist on their favourite streaming service (or just a list of titles) and send it to them to get what they like about it and what they don't. Also: I always ask them what the songs are they HAVE TO hear :) All in all ... put those questions out there, LISTEN and last but not least be creative and use your imagination :) Hope I could help you out a little!
ya man... I got 25 hours of music for a HALLOWEEN PARTY. You are the coach my man, ask those hard questions and give them some direction!!
New Cupid! Time For A Change!🤪🤪🤪 🤪🤪🤘🏼🤪🤪🤪🤪 They Also Wanted Freestyle That’s when you know you old!!! Spring Love Come Back Tooo Meeeeeee 💎 Can you play Diamond Girl? We’re Leaving Soon 😂
ya man there is a wave of it, every third bride wants to 80s BOP 😂
Need some DJ advice. How many times is too many times to mix in Three 6 Mafia?
all of it til the paint falls off
I don’t know ow what any of the buttons do. Thx Kevin
hahaha what do I do with my hands?? Thanks Calvin 🤗
Hi DJHiKevin. Great talking points
Thanks! Anything you think I missed?
@@djhikevin A good myth or not is "if you use gig bars at your events, you are either lazy or not a professional."
Great video, Kevin Sync is great but not perfect. Skills is what pay the bills not the gear. Also, for my larger events (wedding) assistant is a must.
Great stuff @DJHiKevin I love sync. it frees my hands to do so much else. I started in '88 where sync was my finger speeding or slowing the vinyl on belt drive tables lol. Now with modern tools, I can add Qing, stems, FX, into the mix, and transition faster. I still listen and take over manually as sync WILL fail at times. That is wear knowing how to do it is important.
started in 88 hell ya, I love that. truly sync leaves us so much time and brain power to focus on something else. if I have the time, I'm there but otherwise sync it is! 😂 Appreciate you watching Stevie!
Did you just say.... "whats up babies"......................?!? SMH
gotta have a call sign baybieeeeee 💪😎
