RUG Survival Madness vs WUG Terrageddon - Round 7 - June Premodern MTG Tournament
This is a lesson that in MTG you never have to give another turn to your opponent when you have to do the alpha strike...xD
Please post more old school games.
I plan on it! Releasing all 5 rounds from the Regrowth cup in the next few weeks then I’ll be recording at another OS tournament shortly after that!
Seems to me that both players missed the double block of Black Knight + Order of the Ebon Hand on the Mishra's Factory to get around Urborg's ability.
Have you considered digitizing the deck lists you show at the start on Moxfield and putting them in the video description? I'd love to be able to see the decks, mess with cards, and export as needed to work with the spice.
Unfortunately I'm only given deck photos (sometimes only after lots of reminders), so getting digital lists for every deck isn't possible right now. Whenever I'm on camera I do put my moxfield list in the description, but I really don't have the resources right now to digitize every single list featured on the channel.
Premodern +oldschool is sick Mostly premodern tho ;) that lionboltdip deck gg
I agree Premodern has a lot more variety and room to brew, but I’m a sucker for some OS!
Fun fact.. there was a user on MTGSalvation who was pretty famous named Rancored_Elf
Wow awesome game. Please keep the old school games coming Cheers
22:32 discarding purge to hand size does nothing, but discarding to balance...
0:45 those chain lightnings have seen some things 😂
Awesome content. Nice to see some Old School from out West. Keep it up
Thank you! I really want to try and record more Old School this next year. Sin City and War of the Roses are 100% happening and I’m going to try and get the Seattle guys to let me bring the setup for their next tourney too!
Why no sinkhole? Is it banned?
Was never printed in a Premodern legal set! (4th Ed through Scourge)
Pre-Modern is literally the best format imho. Once you go past it gets stupid with turn 2 wins being constant in modern, keep going to pioneer now its turn 3 wins, standard is even consistently winning before turn 4 resolves.
Agreed!
GG just found the channel, love me some premodern, sub!!!
Welcome in, and thank you! I publish gameplay videos 2x a week (mostly Premodern but some Old School/miscellaneous formats on occasion) so you’re in the right spot!
The thumbnail pic was a lie 😂
??
are these games usually played at the same location? there's always great music in the background
For the most part yeah! Event location and next month's schedule can be found through the Discord link.
What about just banning the shrimp, or maybe restricting some cards instead of banning hmmm...
G3 Quinn should have smothered on the upkeep to live another turn
If they want to weaken StifleNought without totally erasing the deck, they could ban Vision Charm. Make it less consistent in getting the early Nought.
I think a real conversation about the 3 different versions of Stiflenought needs to happen. Blue, of all colors, doesn't need a second turn 12/12 with free counter backup. I know it sucks and it's only good in blue. But the Naughty Noughts gotta go! Love the content thank you soooo much!
UR seems like an interesting version for Stiflenought. Even when I think the mono blue one is the best. But those bolts and flings seem interesting
@@hulkhoganwillbenchu that's true. Playing the enemy colors in Premodern really hurts. But I somehow love this that you are punished as a wizard for bringing together the enemy colors.
Think towards the end of G2, dreadnought shouldve cycled the vision charm via his Web to dig for final point of damage, holding for dreadnought seems greedy.
Eh, it's a choice but I think it's worth considering that knowing your opponent has life gain left in their list means that digging just one deeper vs getting a blocker that could buy you potentially more turns is a worth it risk sometimes. And playing out the dreadnought gives him a deeper reach to draw into his biggest burn of finding his second fling and crushing any distance Quinns lifegain could've covered. It was Playing to your strongest out vs your quickest out.
Web does not draw a card when phasing back in as it does not “enter” the battlefield
Congrats on one year! Appreciate all the glorious premodern matches.
Thank you so much!
Siiick build
I like this UR build. The burn route gives reach.
Lol stasis is some bullshit. We all but banned that card in store when I was kid playing during this era.
Machine head deck list should make some changes
surprised the mind stone never got cracked game one
Sorry Dane, nice win, now fix your art xD
Ohhhh happy day 🎉
Deck lists?
Unfortunately I’m just given deck photos, no text lists.
I love your videos so much, wish you would upload daily! But it seems like you ramping up the production anyway. Last video was 3 days ago
Thank you! I work full time so daily is a bit out of reach for me at the moment, but I’ve been steadily doing two videos a week since January!
I love slivers! I went 6-0 with it in a monthly a year and a half ago. It’s super good because you have access to all of the best cards from each colour. My list was very different to his but I have a video about it and some gameplay videos on my channel if you’re interested
Awesome, I’ll be sure to check it out. It’s one of those decks I’ve always wanted to build!
@@Heavy_Play yeah I personally think going the counterspell route is a trap. I’m also not a fan of all the card draw and filtering. I went with 4 duress 4 cabal therapy (I think / can’t really remember) 4 bolt 4 swords and 3 fire/ice. Then loads of the multicoloured slivers like the ub one that can bounce and the one that can sac a sliver to shock something. They give the deck a lot of reach and staying power with all the burn and a 2/2 is much better on its own than a 1/1 first strike or haste
Really love watching these games! Here in my area premodern is not a popular format😢
Play in the online webcam monthlies. I have a video about how to do it on my channel. It’s really fun and very easy and convenient
I am usually a person that prefers to use the same art for each copy of the card (especially basic lands) but there is 1 exception - Tron lands. I have the entire Tron package where each land has a different art, so 12 different arts. I don't know why, but I find it funny
Re Mishra’s Factory / Standstill - yeah it’s a layers / timestamp thing. Tldr is that the Factory activation is ‘newer’ than Humility’s effect, so it overwrites what Humility would otherwise do to a pre-existing creature.
14:00 you can counter both the Cycling and the Soldier-trigger of Decree of justice, just not with a traditional counterspell
really cool decks!
3:20 it has been oracle-updated to giving haste
At the beginning of game one, why Dark Ritual to hard cast unmask when you can just exile it to play it for free and save 2 mana? Also, why didn't he play out the wall of roots when he needed the blocker?
I’ve been watching your premodern coverage for awhile and love the videos. My buddy and I hope to make it down to Portland one of these months and throw our hats in the ring. In the meantime I’ll live vicariously through these players. Keep it up :)
That would be great, the more the merrier!
Tony should have won game 2. Solitary Confinement gives him shroud, and Oath is a targeted effect.
You are correct! I didn't catch this at the time (and neither did anyone who's watched this in the last 5 months) but David should not of gotten an oath trigger at 47:00!
Imp the biggest flaw of this format is the land destruction. Just look at this match. G2 and G3 were complete non-games because of mana denial. Super feels bad.
Prison/land destruction/mana denial is a pretty common theme of early magic and should be considered when constructing a deck IMO. But to be fair, TK's deck does have ways to deal with land destruction in mana dorks. He probably should of been more aggressive in his mulligans for a mana dork after seeing what his opponent was on.
Not a flaw imo.
Before Commander players started sitting around a table jerking off and playing Solitaire, you had to deal with things like land destruction and counters. It was great times.
Land destruction definitely feels bad, but I think it plays an important metagame role. There are lots of broken multi-color and combo decks in the format where the mana base is one of their few weaknesses. It's good to be able to keep those decks in check. And there are decks that are very good against land destruction. Drawing Stone Rain when you are behind on board vs aggro is a dead draw.
There is a reason they got rid of most mana denial and land destruction over time. If land destruction would be that important of a mechanic for the game it would be in every format. The history of modern format (and every other newer format) shows that a very limited amount of land destruction is needed for a healthy format. Land destruction that replaces the land like Field of Ruin, Ghost Quater, Assassins trophy get rid of problematic lands will not denying mana while Pillage, Stone Rain, Vindicate are expensive enough to not see much play.
Taking damage every time the CoB is tapped by Port is BRUTAL
Yeah, taking a shocks worth of damage every turn there at the end of G3 was tough to watch.
Watching these games, I miss Oath triggers an embarrassing number of times. It's a real testament to the deck that I can play a 2 mana do-nothing and still win.
Great video and commentary as always. It’s always nice to see aluren. I really need to get around to uploading my gameplay again.
TK here - The deck looked okay game one but I think 2 and 3 were a product of new deck and an un optimized side board, not to mention playing against Alec’s proven very strong list. Looking back at my keep for game 2 I think I just got scared of the land destruction and kept a sub optimal hand which the land destruction just picked apart. In game 3 you are 100% right I need a dork on turn one more often and I just need to put more reps in with the deck. Sorry about the poker chips on camera. When my forest got destroyed, I paid 2 mana to cycle my Cloud of Faeries away to search for some answer. I think I grabbed monkey to deal with mox which had been present game 1 and 2. As for the ports I just got so flustered there and made some errors Thanks for the games Alec, and Aluren will be back!
I thought the poker chips were fun! Maybe a bit hard to tell how many counters are on Gemstone Caverns but it reminded me of when we used to use glass beads as counters. That Aluren deck looks cool, excited to see it on the channel again when it's a little more tuned!
Urza's Legacy was the first set to have foil cards while the Urza's Saga prerelease introduced the concept with 'Lightning Dragon' as a promo.
❤
cool vid man . love both these decks ! keep up the good work
Thank you, I appreciate it!
Sadly reanimator in premodern has two big factors that hinder it. 1) Entomb is banned and 2) Creatures are not an auto-win when they enter, unlike what happens in other formats where you have Emrakul/Griselbrand/Atraxa/Archon
