I would love a tour of your urban sketching bag! I’m alway fascinated with what people are using and how they carry their supplies. What makes it in the bag and why…… just a thought (figure that any sort of comment helps you with the algorithm).
Ah yes, I've been thinking about it as I to enjoy looking at other peoples kit, but I suppose it would have to be a "studio" recording not my usual on site stuff, and that feels like a big step, before you know it I'll be doing pen reviews (don't think I'd be good at that, I'm too opinionated), but I'll chew on the idea. You're right about the algorithm, it's a cruel master of RUclips
Wine makes everything better 😊 thanks for sharing your process.
Well I you're sitting at a cafe table doing a sketch it's only polite to have a glass of something (or three), helps with the jiggly line technique.
Love the drawing and your commentary 🧡
Thanks for the support, it's great to hear and I appreciate you taking the time to comment. Sketching can be a very personal thing, it's taken a long while for me to find the extra will to share what I do like this, so getting positive feedback is really reassuring.
@ well I’ve subscribed and am now starting to binge watch. I’m more of a ‘Stealth sketcher’ so I think you are very brave. Greetings from Australia. 🙂
“Because I am John, and wherever I go, the rain will follow.” Thanks for that. I know the feeling. Nice work.
I do seem to have rather wet luck when I go out sketching, but I was taught that there's no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing, so I go out prepared. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for sharing i really want to try Urban / Outdoor sketching more this year - love this church so much history aswell
That's the great thing about Urban Sketching, we are all just trying our best in whatever situation we find ourselves. When you are in the 'studio' there is an expectation that the work will be your best, as everything is in your favour and you have everything to hand. But in the street you have limited time, tools and patience, so perhaps counterintuitively, you can be easier on your drawing, and yourself, just be proud that you had the courage to try.
Thank you again for another video. I love your line work. How do you maintain your fountain pen to stop the acrylic ink from drying and causing blockages?
Great question. I'm actually quite lazy about maintaining my kit, don't have patience for cleaning after every use. So I use a special fountain pen brand which has a tiny water reservoir in the cap which ensures that the nib never dries. All I have to do is wipe the nib on opening and draw, I maybe do a full flush of the nib once a year. The pen is called a indigraph, it's a Spanish guy who only makes this one product, they are designed with urban sketching in mind as they can take india ink and pigment inks like carbon. Before I got into acrylic ink I used Rotring waterproof ink in them, perfect. I ended up (over a few years) buying four Indigraph's with different nibs, as I said, I'm too lazy to maintain pens and swap out my nibs.
Does the pen have some kind of additional padding to it, or is that how it comes? Looks interesting
Ah yes, well spotted. I like to add padding to certain pens, helps me to hold them in a more relaxed grip, and I can hold them further up the barrel, I find it comfortable as I used to get hand ache. I add foam pipe insulation, it's cheap and easy to use.
Thank you very much for your videos. The explanation about your paper choices has inspired me to give a larger size and different colour a go!
That's wonderful, pleased that you are going to be exploring larger papers and colour and tone as well. One extra tip would be to have a white pen handy, using white on colour paper is a game changer. Hope you have fun with it.
Beautiful result, I love it. You happen to sell your work anywhere?
Thank you, it was an enjoyable piece to work on. I don't put work up for sale, I'm sure you understand that the whole "selling art online" World has gone sour, so I just draw for pleasure.
Beautiful. I love this!
Thank you for saying so, it's an enjoyable building to draw, it feels like a big friendly brute.
Brilliant
Thank you, its kind of folks to take the time to comment (helps the algorithm apparently)
the buildings' facade should be painted bright white ... much better! 😀
So true, in most of Europe concrete buildings are painted white, but in London they like the 'honesty' of boring grey.
Great explanation about how you used colour. Thank you!
Thank you, I'm not sure that I explain myself well, so much is instinct, so it's great to know that people appreciate what I'm trying to say.
Very nice drawing. I've been working on trying to do trees better with my pen/colored pencil work. Ever do trees with your style? I'm finding representing them on paper is a lot harder than I expected.
Yeah, trees can be really tricky, when I draw them i concentrate on getting the structure right, the trunk and the main branches, and giving them texture to show the bark. Then I stylise the green canopy as blocks, trying not to focus on the leaves... But end up drawing leaves anyway. I try to get character to the trees, let them express themselves.
Loved it. Congrats on 50 subscribers.
Thanks, hoping to turn the whole world into sketchers, one subscriber at a time. Sketchers look at things with loving, open eyes, the world needs more of that.
Really enjoyed this. Most "RUclips sketchers" are using watercolors for these style of sketches (which I also enjoy). I get more inspiration from seeing how this is done with markers, as you are demonstrating here. 🤜
I'm pleased to hear that you enjoyed this, thanks for letting me know. Sketching can feel a little insular, and you don't know whether what you do is interesting to anyone else, so I really appreciate people taking the time to comment. It's interesting to sketch in differing ways, keeps us fresh to try new ways of looking. I like watercolour but there's something bold about the acrylic brush pens that's very exciting to use.

I like your videos and will watch more over the coming days. I have recently decided to start sketching and urban sketching is what I want to do. My biggest issue I believe I'm going to have to overcome is the desire for 'perfection' (realism) and if I'm 'good enough.'. I love your art as it is beautiful and completely speaks to me about my worries starting this adventure.
Thank you for watching my videos and letting me know that there's something useful in them for you. Perfection I think is overrated, a photograph is a perfect representation of a place and we can never draw as accurately and precisely as a camera can. But we can draw with personality, adding ourselves into the view, that's quite tricky also, we have to learn to express something of ourselves in the marks we make, but that's a personal challenge, one worth taking our time on. Let the camera have its perfection and we'll work on something that only a human being can, finding connections in the places we inhabit. Enjoy your sketching, I'm suggestion would be to enjoy the act of making marks that only would, enjoying the 'line', and worry less about proportion and precision, that comes in time and can't easily be rushed.
@@jonathan.mortimer22 "Draw with personality..." I like that
I love it ❤ I like to see someone using other than watercolour.
Thank you, I agree that it is interesting to try different techniques and approaches to sketching, watercolour is great but there are modern alternatives so we should try them out and see how we can incorporate these into our style.
Very interesting. Do you get paid for advertising the pens? I shall look forward to your London calendar.
No, I buy all the pens I use in the videos, if I received free stuff it would count as sponsorship I think and I'd have to declare that to RUclips.
Just found you Jon and subscribed - outdoor sketching is something i keep meaning to try - as i just draw my own characters currently - but know this skill would help with my process.
Hi Ruth, I really enjoy outdoor sketching, it gets me out of the house and looking at something interesting for an hour, very beneficial for the soul I think, calming and connecting.
Hi Jon, excellent sketch, I enjoyed seeing this develop. I wanted to ask: what did you use to splash on the colour of the sky?
They are called Precision Tip Applicator Bottles, hold 10 ml of liquid. You can buy them for around £3 for 5.
