This tune will annoy you.
I came up with this tune a few months ago. Soon my partner was begging me to stop playing it, saying it made her feel itchy or like an insect was buzzing around. It seemed a shame not to share those feelings with a wider audience!

Fingertapping on the Irish Bouzouki?
Просмотров 37014 дней назад
I wrote the first half of this reel back in 2015, and promptly forgot about it. After 5 years of fermentation, I found the file on my hard drive and had new inspiration to write a B part. The fingertapping intro was added as a transition when it was played as part of a set ( see ruclips.net/video/sl7_SZxFE6s/видео.html ), as a kind of experiment to see if it actually worked on bouzouki. #irishb...
The Edinburgh session that's always 10/10
Просмотров 16228 дней назад
Edinburgh is home to countless great sessions, and one such can be found at The Mitre Bar on a Sunday night. I managed to get down there a handful of times during my most recent stint in the city, and the session was always friendly and full of energy, which inspired me to write this tune! And if you lived in Australia in the 90s, you might be able to recognise where I found inspiration for the...
Why are these tunes so hated?
Просмотров 278Месяц назад
As a dancer, I always loved hornpipes, and that hasn't changed as I transitioned into playing music. But for reasons I can't fathom, these tunes seem to be widely maligned among trad musicians. Though admittedly there are some cheesy hornpipes floating around, I find them a lot of fun to play with plenty of room for interpretation and groove in the melody, as well as the chords. Thus I felt it ...
Faroe-inspired music on the Irish Bouzouki
Просмотров 203Месяц назад
Last year we took a fantastic tour of the Faroe Islands in a small minibus. The bus door had a little melodic alarm every time it opened, which we were exposed to repeatedly throughout the day alongside the seemingly endless stream of beautiful sights. As a memoir of the trip, I thought I should write a tune inspired by the alarm sound, and this was the result! (Note the music is inspired by th...
Eastern Scales + Western Rhythms = ???
Просмотров 3152 месяца назад
16 tunes in I was looking for inspiration, and decided to try composing using a scale built after the fashion of the Melakarta of the Carnatic music tradition. The result was this Nordic Pols in a Carnatic scale, dubbed Ragavardhinipols. Things start to get even more interesting when the 'diatonic chords' for the scale make an appearance the second time round the tune. If you'd be interested in...
Warm up tune for the Irish Bouzouki
Просмотров 3002 месяца назад
I had a few technically challenging tunes lined up for coming weeks, but I realised that the current winter weather was making these more difficult than they need to be, so I decided instead to write a slower tune which would function better as a warm up for cold hands! Stay tuned for some faster tunes in a couple of months when the barometer starts rising! #irishbouzouki #bouzouki #irishmusic ...
What if you just play every note?
Просмотров 3513 месяца назад
A jig I wrote a few years back. What began as an attempt to combine a Hungarian minor scale and a blues scale degenerated into a chromatic abomination utilising most of the fretboard. Originally conceived for a set including a "Norwegian Wood" waltz and The Swedish Jig, I gave it a fittingly Scandinavian name. An alternative title after adding the comp is 'Please don't sue me Chris Isaak'. A fu...
When the Irish Bouzouki goes to Bulgaria...
Просмотров 2833 месяца назад
Rounding out the first half of 2024's tunes is this Kopanitsa I wrote several years ago during a trip down a rabbit hole of Bulgarian/Irish Fusion - probably not the first bouzouki player to be introduced to Bulgarian music via Andy Irvine! I named it 'Winter Sunsets', which seemed like a fitting tune to play this week as we approach the Winter Solstice here in Australia! Through a series of fo...

Irish Bouzouki - Saloon Music
Просмотров 1 тыс.4 месяца назад
One of my favourite sounds on bouzouki is this very modal droning, sliding style with a relentless feeling to the rhythm - so this week I decided to dedicate a tune to it! Branching a little more towards to my video game compositions than the folk tunes that have been typical so far among the fortnightly compositions. #irishbouzouki #folkmusic #celticmusic #bouzouki #2024tnightlytunes #australi...
The best way to play in C on Irish Bouzouki - Tune down!
Просмотров 5614 месяца назад
This week a different type of tune - probably best described as a waltz, though in the Irish Dancing world this would be a 'heavy jig'. The music might sound deceptively slow, but the dance at competitive level is extremely fast, and I tried to capture a bit of that in the accompaniment. I wrote the tune in C which is a fairly awful key to play in because the body makes it difficult to access t...
What does a Swedish tune written by an Australian in Scotland sound like?
Просмотров 2825 месяцев назад
This week, an older tune which I wrote a few years ago while living in Scotland. Slängpolskas were the first Swedish tunes I came across and I was instantly attracted to the strong pulse. This was my first attempt at writing one - long before I had even thought about studying Swedish music. This was written towards the end of my time in Scotland as I was preparing to travel between music festiv...
Derivative Works - Using Modulation for a new take on old tunes
Просмотров 2105 месяцев назад
This week taking a more liberal interpretation of the word 'compose' - A few years back I got bored of classic session tunes and started mixing (or in this case, Minoring) things up by modulating them (eg. playing a major tune as minor). One of the tunes that survived the process best was the jig 'Calliope House'. Some time later, I heard about a double homicide at a Caravan Park in Calliope, Q...
The sound of Nostalgia - Irish Bouzouki music
Просмотров 8155 месяцев назад
In 2021 I returned to Australia after 2 years living in Sweden. A few months later, enjoying kanelbullar and a cup of fresh filter coffee, I wrote this polska. In my head it's been called 'Nostalgia Polska', but more than just nostalgia it represents the strange feeling of homesickness for somewhere away from home, so the 8th fortnightly tune for 2024 has been dubbed 'Awaysick'. Apologies for t...

Just came across this video. Well done Eamon!
Cheers!
Amazing !! Thanks for this vidéo ❤
You're welcome!
A joyful tune !
Nice tune. And now I gotta up my boozer game. Thanks a lot E 😉
Cheers!
Great tune Eamon! Were you performing here in Edinburgh, or just visiting?
I was living there! Most recently in 2022/23, but also a few years earlier when I was doing more performing.
@@EamonCoughlan Our loss is Australia's gain
Very nice!
Thanks!
Hup!
Is it just the Demo Version?
The pipa is fully available for free. It will need the full version of Kontakt 5 or above to run it though (Native Instruments control this, not me). If you run it in kontakt player, it will time out after 15 minutes i think.
Wow! I heared it 10 times
there is a small border between nonsens and genious ;-)
hated (?) - but beautiful!
Je pensais tomber sur kesh jig
there's too much hate in the world - love this ❤
Seems pretty not-hateble to me😂 So I don't know. Is a hater here who could deliver? Anyone? We desperately need you - this one time! And you don't show up? Shame on you haters! 😂
They don't want to pipe up 😅
I replaced my second C & G strings on the Mandola with a Higher gauge and tuned them one octave higher ...kinda giving her a 12 string guitar effect .😊🎉 WONDERFUL Explanation & EXQUISITELY Presented Instruction .😊
Nice! My original bouzouki came with the strings in octave pairs but I swapped them for unison very early on. Greek bouzoukis are tuned with the bottom 2 strings in octaves like that, and most cittern players in the modern Swedish tradition have the low strings octaved too.
It's strange to hear this work, especially if you imagine this against some soprano vocals. Thank you for this experiment!
You're welcome!
Never tire of this melody, very nice arrangement.
Thanks!
Super sick!!
Thanks!
Can you share the dots for this tune? It's awesome
Thanks! I'm planning to produce a songbook of all of the tunes at the end of the year but I'll see if I can get an advance of this one.
@@EamonCoughlan great! Either way I'll be looking out for your book
Awesome set, love the Great Dane in particular
Cheers! There were several great Danes in the band as well 😂
Very nice. What is the Tuning? Are you tuned like an octave Mandolin perhaps? G D A E (low to high)?
Thanks! It's GDAD tuning, though it should be playable in GDAE as well.
Eamon this is magnificent! PLEASE drop a tab, my fingers need the workout 🤞
Thanks! I'm planning to put together a songbook with all of the tunes at the end of the year, but maybe I can see if I can put this one out as a demo page before that.
Love this very organic sample library
Thanks!
I lied a bit about using "every note" - can you find the one that escaped inclusion?
Not really, i'm lazy 😅
🤣
This is quite lovely. Definitely captures that melancholic joy feel. Spot on.
Cheers!
Very interesting...sounds awesome!
Thanks!
Thanks for taking the time to show this, Excellent.
You're very welcome!
So nice slip jig!!
Thanks!
Tip: Play at 1.25x speed for a more typical Bulgarian sound! Unfortunately I can't play that fast with all the ornamentation 😂
Helo Im looking for any maker irish bouzuoki maker so , how could I check out ? Where could i find best sound of irish bouzuoki?
My instrument was made by Daniel Hoban www.dhobanguitars.com/ . There are a few well known makers but most of them are quite pricey and have long waiting lists, if the builder is even building any more. Your best bet for value is probably to find someone local. There is an 'Irish Bouzouki forum' on facebook that might have a list of known builders or at least some collective knowledge about builders.
Have you tried any other brand of bouzoukis that'd you recommend? I'm from Australia so it's slim pickings here.
It depends on your budget. The 'entry level' ones tend to be from Hora in Romania, my first bouzouki was from an online vendor called 'foolfisch' who I think had them made by Hora, maybe to a custom design. It was pretty bad but it was cheap and it had the bouzouki sound, and playable after a good set up. From my limited experience with them, I haven't been impressed by any of the mid-level ones (eg. $1000+ factory models). I think if you're spending more than $1500 you might as well just get a luthier-made instrument because it's going to be orders of magnitude better than those for 2x or so the price. The ideal would probably be to get a decent second hand one relatively cheap on marketplace. Greek bouzoukis are more common (in Melbourne at least) and I see them pretty regularly at $500-1000 though I don't know anything about the quality. If you can afford a few thousand for a new luthier instrument, mine was made by Daniel Hoban in Melbourne and I've been extremely happy with it, Daniel is also a really nice guy to work with.
I‘m from Europe (Germany), which is obvously more bouzouki-ish. The Hora instruments which are from Romania and shipped world wide by Thomann are pretty horrible from my pov (tried two and sent them back the next day). My suggestion if you can’t afford a luthier instrument: Look for the Trinity College zouks (made in Japan), at least the older ones are pretty good if you find one down under (never tried a new one). Fender also had an Irish Bouzouki (Korean made) for a short time some 10+ years back. Not really great, but a really usable instrument with a decent pickup and preamp installed. Both would be around 250 (Fender) to 500 (Trinty) USD second hand.
Woah, you can play left handed also?! ;)
and upside down or standing on the walls, will have to try those next time 😂
Nice playing. Great advice.
Thanks, glad it's useful!
Love this, awesome
Thanks!
goat😮🐐
great stuff
Thanks!
My brother never brought me anything, but trouble ...?😮
nailed it!
OK, so to what notes are the strings tuned then? Low to high?
FCGC , everything dropped 2 notes.
Beautiful work! Thank you for keeping up with the schedule. =) Did you experience any string buzz with the dropdown tuning?
Thanks! No buzzing, though admittedly I wasn't doing any heavy strumming so it might become more of an issue for that kind of playing.
Hello! Can you please help me find sheets for pipa music? The sourced are really rare.
I have no idea where to find them, sorry. I transcribed this by ear. The 'Echo Pipa Studio' channel includes some tab/music for exercises and I think maybe some songs too ruclips.net/video/XbsXYIKcHZ8/видео.html&ab_channel=CarrieWang

I bought an Irish bouzouki and it's a really good one. I don't have trouble playing any chord. But I am so busy with mandolin and guitar I rarely touch the bouzouki. I have only found one book for it and it doesn't have much information.
What kind of information are you looking for?
New to your videos. Love them and they are helpful. May I ask what is the make of your bouzouki?
thanks, glad it’s been useful! The bouzouki was made by Daniel Hoban in melbourne dhobanguitars.com
well done , thx so much
