More silver and Roman!? Part 2. Metal detecting the hills of County Durham
Welcome back, and HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Wishing everyone all the best in 2025!
If you are a regular to the channel you will have hopefully watched the previous video, where we pull up lots of different artifacts and coins, including a nice little silver love token from william the 3rd.
We get straight back into the "action" in this video where cooper stumbles upon what looks like a ROMAN coin! At the end of the video I do tell you a little bit about this find....
And as always there is artifacts a plenty coming up!
Again, thank you very much for the support and all the comments!
All the best!

Hi mate great video, just subbed. Got my first detector five months ago and only been on my local beaches (Whitley bay and Tynemouth) would love to tag along sometime with you 🤙🏻 All the best.
@desretroreels4949 hello there! Thanks for the sub,and also welcome to the best hobby in the world! I wish you all the best on the beaches , it's something I don't get to do alot of detecting on. Alot of my permissions are very strict with who they let me bring on, but u do have some that I can tag folk along on,so let's see what happens in the future! All the best! -ross- The Dales Detectorist
@Thedalesdetectorist1989 Thanks for the reply mate. I totally understand that 🙏 Would be grateful for any opportunities. Best wishes Des.
@desretroreels4949 I'm always getting new permissions, so let's see what happens in the future 😉 Cheers
@@Thedalesdetectorist1989 brilliant 🤞
LOL only 7 minutes in and I will call a definate Roman bronze coin. 😀. The box like looking scissors are a pair of candle snuffer wick trimmer scissors from the Georgian / Victorian era ( nice find but alas generally only parts like your bit turns up due to plough damage ). @7:23 I found that exact same bit donkies years ago and eventually tracked down an identification. It is from a Georgian era floral beaded cuff bracelet ( basically a wide cloth bracelet with a metal fixing clasp at each end, your bit as you can see has a little slot in it where the catch from the other end slots in and locks in place also the line of holes down the outer edge are for attaching the cloth bracelet. 🙂. @15:30 That artefact is part of a Georgian era swivel seal, checker board pattern on one side and the hollow side would of held an engraved stone. 🙂. @40:00 That fragment if it is a grey pewter like metal then it is the rim from a bell. 🙂. Most of the other fragment bits are erm fragments that are to broken to identify but nothing to important they are the fragments we find all the time in the fields. Good video and HH. 🙂. P.s. Have you got some super glue to glue the fancy decorative piece back onto the clasp you pulled off. 😆.
I just love detailed comments like this, and you have the record for find I.Ds so far!😂 I'm learning so much, I didn't even know floral beaded cuff bracelets were a thing, but now I do! It does actually go back to together and stay so I'm not too upset about it and it will probably make it into my cabinet. Again, massive thanks for sharing your knowledge.....I will more than likely be calling on you again! Cheers!
Thats roman yes ! Find 1
@remcoquintbakker6985 yes, quite unbelievable for little old us to stumble upon a roman coin in the area that we are detecting on this video. This permission will throw up some more really nice stuff I just know it!
One of the best videos I've ever seen well done buddy mark south Wales
@markhayes5356 wow! Really appreciate that! Thank you very much! Like I have said to one or two others who have commented, I'm just trying to be as honest as possible when im producing what you watch. So to get a really nice comment like this has really made my day! Thanks again. All the best -ross- The Dales Detectorist
@Thedalesdetectorist1989 yes I have found a silver ring once after about forty people walked past it just over a gate buddy as they say say at the end or the day that is where most farm workers got paid at the end of the day was by the gate .all the best looking forward to more videos but I will say I use the deus 2 lol.
@markhayes5356 that probably explains why all that money is near that gate! There will be more there,we really need to grid it and do it properly.....but I always get carried away! I've never used the deus 2, I'd be interested to use one....one day.
That first find looks Roman to me mate 👍
@IanBlatherwick yes, we have asked a few people and it seems the most popular answer is that it is from the 1st/2nd century and a dupondius. If anyone thinks or can say anything else about it that would be amazing Cheers
The item found at 29:06 looks like the end of a pair of braces or "suspenders." The end would clip on the waistband of the wearer's pants, but it could be something else entirely.
@middlesteven5477 yes I think I'd agree with you. It certainly has that kind of look and feel to it
The box-like item with a small handle is a wick trimmer for trimming candle wicks. Best of luck growing your channel.
@@middlesteven5477 wow! Yet another item with a name to it! Thank you very much for taking the time to help out, I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge! All the best for 2025 Cheers ross- The Dales Detectorist
Quick update guys! The item found at around 29 minutes into the video is actually a sword pommel!! Dated to possibly 14th/15th century! So not a bedknob or off a fence haha! Proof that even if you aren't sure what it is you have found, always keep it just incase!
the little peace of lead what u think is a gaming peace is a bag seal
@blackpooldetecting8978 ah! it looks nothing like any of my other bag seals, that's why I sort of half leant towards it being something else... either way it's a lovely thing!
Happy new year ! Just subscribed and enjoying your vids. The coin is deffo Roman and the lead lump is possibly Roman also, a steel yard weight. I've found both pretty much like yours. Neil from Darlington
@nsturnbull47 hello! Thanks for commenting and subscribing! That's very interesting about the weight being roman, I know weights can be difficult to date and my knowledge isn't amazing when it comes to roman stuff. Darlington isn't too far away from me and we actually have a permission there that we have yet to visit! Maybe we will venture down from the hills one of these days! Thanks again and all the best for 2025! Ross- The Dales Detectorist
great fines some realy good history also great video good luck on the next hunt
@blackpooldetecting8978 thanks! Hoping to get out again before the reality check of going back to work! All the best out there!
New subscriber and hoping to get myself some kit in 2025, I'm following in my late dads favourite hobby. You mentioned at the start of the video about anything else you could cover on the videos. For someone who's largely using youtube and so on, is there a recent video on buying advice for 2024/25 for 'beginner' detecting, ive got a decent budget so i'm not gonna go low and easy, fancy getting something good to start with. Any recommends between £700-£1k? From North Yorkshire, Jimi
@jimihunt3407 hello! I have not done a video covering anything other than my days out detecting, although it is something I may cover in the near future. For now, the best advice I give to anybody starting out buying metal detecting gear is..... don't jump in and buy the first machine you see, do your research on what it is you want from a machine and relate it to where it is you detect. ( detecting beaches it's always handy to have a waterproof machine etc) Don't be "scared" of the higher end machines such as the manticore. These machines are very user friendly. If you upped your budget a bit, such as a manticore isn't for out of reach price wise. With your budget I would be looking at the equinox range, such as a 700 or a 900. Or if you are a little worried you might not fall in love with detecting, you can pick a pre owned equinox 600/800 up for less than your budget.(still fantastic machines!)There is many other good machines, but I haven't had much experience with them so I can't comment on how they perform.... Please keep in touch about how your detecting journey begins! And ,if I can help or advise in any way please don't hesitate to get in touch. I wish you all the best! -ross- The Dales Detectorist
@@Thedalesdetectorist1989 Thanks so much for your reply, I've definitely ring fenced the Equinox as a contender! Seems that eBay and facebook marketplace have a fairly good stock of second hand detectors. I'll do some more research, definitely looking along the pasture and arable friendly machines. I'll keep you posted! Jimi
@jimihunt3407 I'm a minelab fan, and can't fault the equinox range as I started on an 800 and upgraded to the manticore, which if you could stretch your budget is a very very VERY good machine! I detect mainly pasture and as you can see the manticore pulls alot of nice stuff up! Just a heads up, pinpointer wise I opted for the xp mi6. The minelab pinpointers aren't quite as good in my opinion. All the best
The William 111 love token you found is Chester mint identified by the letter " C " under the head. I love finding buttons my favourites are the early one piece military inscription ones 1770 - 1830 🙂 also the livery buttons which are nice if they have a good bit of plating left on them. 😀. County Durham here born and bred with 40+ years of detecting Englands fields under my belt. I don't do yt videos but I do watch some channels. I have subscribed and unsubscribed from more yt detecting channels than I have had hot dinners. 😬. The reason being is CLICK BAIT thumbnails look I found Viking Saxon Bronze age and a gold sovereign and 5 hammereds all before lunch then it got better after lunch when we went into the next field. 🙄. All the big channels trying to one up each other I just get sick of seeing it, it almost looks fake to me in a lot of cases. 🤔. It isn't jealousy either because 40 years of detecting accumulates a very nice collection of coins and artefacts 🙂it is the fact that to really find the things these big channels claim to they must go out detecting like it is going out of fashion or are trawling auction sites to buy things to say that they have found it. 😔. I can't sttand the continuous banter back and forth OH get the pin pointer out and give the hole a beep, OH lets cut to headquarters and look at this stater I just magically plucked from this hole ( lol from unsubscribe channels ). They don't show the lead and brass bits and corroded coppers like you have here. 😀. A typical days detecting for me gives about 100 dug signals and from that I am lucky to get between 5 - 10 keepers. I admire your honesty about showing it how it is ( I know how it is ) I will subscribe but if your channel ends up like that haltzhammer click bait channel well I am off to pastures new. 😁. HH.
@myview1875 hello! I did notice the letter "C", but my knowledge of coins is admittedly not as extensive as I would like it to be (yet!) But thanks to people like yourself that drop little nuggets of info like that, I'm always learning! I toyed with the idea of doing youtube for a long time..... Iv been detecting around 5 years, and I do 99% of it locally, very rarely more than 20 mins away from my house. The first thing I said to myself when I did start, was to just be as honest as possible but still make the videos as interesting as I could. I didn't expect to get any subscribers or any views, just wanted to share my journey and adventures. So, i would like thank you very much for taking the time to watch and comment on the video, and for sharing your knowledge. Really appreciate it! All the best, -ross-
@@Thedalesdetectorist1989 No problem I will help anytime I can with an identification . 🙂.

@jimconnell8994 hello there mate, thanks for taking the time to comment! The one thing I wanted to get right is being honest. Looks like a tub token that Ross. The miner would put these on the tubs they'd filled in order to get paid. Also used to pay landowners for transporting loads over their land, and is there not a big lime kiln nearby? Nice find, pick of the bunch for me. 👍
@matthewoliphant3004 ah yes! Not too sure if there's any lime kilns about but on the old maps there is "old quarries" dotted around nearby.
