    If I was single and had no kids, and wanted to live like that I would: A. Have my things have some sense of style so they’re aesthetically pleasing despite being the bare minimum amount, B. Have a studio apartment or Tiny House, so it feels less empty by being physically smaller, and C. I’d still want a little more personality and life, so a few plants, and if it’s not an apartment, since I’m an artist, do a few murals as accent walls, so there wouldn’t feel a need to put anything else on the walls. I’ve done that before, and it made me not tempted to hang up individual paintings or shelves to put more stuff on. (Or is not murals, maybe a few solid colored accent walls might work for that purpose as well, but I feel like murals are good because you wouldn’t want to put anything up that would block the view of it.)

    When we were in the military as a young married couple and then family, we kept things as minimal as possible because we refused to pay the overweight fees if we went over the allowable weight for our family size. The great thing about doing this is that every military base have some great “PCS” sales, so any extra furniture we needed was quickly bought (and sold) when we got to our new base. We kept our washer/dryer, upright freezer, mattresses and bedframes, 1 television, dining table and chairs and sofa, besides the kitchen stuff, sheets, towels and clothing. As for decor items, other than photo albums and books, we moved with very few decorative items, and rarely brought curtains with us because every move meant different size windows requiring different curtains. Once my husband retired, we have stuck to that minimal stuff mentality, we only buy what we need and what we like even though we have been settled in one home for over 27 years. Do we have pictures hanging? Yup, but just a few, lots of negative wall space. Every room has what it NEEDS and no more but those rooms are not bare just basic. My seasonal and everyday decor can be packed into about 4 large storage bins and that includes our Christmas tree and ornaments. Our home is cozy but not overstuffed with stuff and that makes it ours.

    I just came across your channel. I started to pursue minimalism a little over four years ago before I even knew about it. I decided one day that I no longer wanted to obtain more things and to eliminate a lot of what I was not using. I sold some items but donated much more. Afterwards, I started to focus on fair trade, sustainable and eco-centric items when I needed to replace something. I started researching companies and what I discovered had me changing my mind about many items that I had on a wish list. I own much less due to the cost of most sustainable items but I feel freer knowing that I am conscious of what businesses I am supporting and leaving a lighter carbon footprint on the planet. Currently, I'm working on becoming more zero waste. I use a compost service and I support zero waste companies like Earth Hero and Way of Being.

    I would not get rid of the lovely wood walls in the home, I’m not a fan of that shade of stain on them tho. I’d probably go with a light bamboo, (would that just be a clear coat?) and maybe the darkest stain for a few accent walls, and/or like a grey-blue stain, but that’s just my preferences. It looks so peaceful, and like a lifestyle worth the work put in. Looks great!❤ Also love all those plants you’ve got indoors! Goes well with the wood, bringing the outdoors in visually! :)

    What put me off minimalism is just getting rid of things with little thought, so the cycle didn,t break of buying things then getting rid of things for a long time, then i felt I had eliminated my life i went to far and that saddened me alot, God did give us things to enjoy, but the real issues is greed and over indulgence and being so wasteful, this is the part of minimalism i want to embrace, I feel as though I have a healthy balance now. Love your channel Christine and I hope your business thrives.

    Christmas for a child *is* an “experience”. Some of the best memories of my childhood was the specialness of the season. The songs, the music, the food, the lights, hunting the woods for the amazing smelling tree that would decorate the house, checking the mail and receiving cards from other countries. Not presents. I am sorry your parents robbed you of this “experience”. Hopefully they did something fantastic with you in lieu of, like taking you on a trip. If you just sat at home while other families had Christmas then your parents were not correct .

    • @heyjude5027
      @heyjude5027 Год назад

      ouch! never had christmas trees and gifts from parents as a kid. 😊Instead, we got up around 4am in the morning on christmas day and walk miles to the city to knock on the houses of well to do people for candies, coins and sometimes foods. If we got more coins, then we buy ourselves clothes or sometimes we give to our parents to buy foods at home. Not fancy but we still find it so special. I think its because we feel the kindness of other people and that home is not the only place to have fun childhood memories. If home cant provide one, then look for it outside...there are nice people everywhere and up to these days, i have the moral ground to be always nice to others and it doesnt hurt to share your blessings. It returns ten folds if you make someone happy.

    One problem I’ve witnessed with those pursuing the minimalist / low waste lifestyle is the desire to obtain the aesthetics and image. If your eliminating items from your life that are still useful such as a blouse that doesn’t have the elements of that aesthetic you create a whole trend of waste just for the sake of owning sustainable goods. Use it up and wear it out before you make those more “sustainable goods”. Buy used/ thrifted goods if you are concerned about the planet. Stay away from IKEA. There are dishes to be had, along with other home furnishings, as second hand if your aim is to help the environment. Unfortunately so much of this movement towards minimalism/ low waste is about appearances and another form of OCD and consumption.

      This comment is 100% on point! I have been a minimalist, consider myself more curated now, person for over 35 years now, way before the internet. I think most people like the aesthetic, not the actual lifestyle. I would love to see something outside the cookie cutter minimalist look that is so common on social media. I have a green wall in my house and yes, I eat seafood once in awhile. I own more art items than probably just a normal person, but art is my life! I try to be conscious of what I buy and have, it ebbs and flows with life.
