Staining Cedar Fence with READY SEAL Light Oak - Spray, Roll, Brush
Просмотров 164 тыс.2 года назад
I stained my new western red cedar fence with Ready Seal stain and sealer in the Natural / Light Oak color. I used a roller, pump sprayer, and brush to apply it. I was able to stain ~700sq feet (115'x6') with 5 gal by being very deliberate in my application. Check out my experience and lessons learned for how to best apply Ready Seal. Did you have to thin your paint with water and if so how much?
Yes I did. This sprayer comes with a little funnel cup to measure viscosity, I just added water until it was the right consistency based on the manual. Not sure exactly how much I ended up adding.
Hello, is there any chance to cooperate this year? About Smart Irrigation Controllers
Hi! I'd be happy to discuss partnering. Can you send me an email at channel.trydiy@gmail.com?
Terrific video! Getting ready to do my fence this week and this is what I needed to see for motivation! Thanks!
Thanks for the comment I'm glad to hear it! Good luck!
What paint brand and product did you use - primer and top coat ?
I just used Kilz primer, then used Benjamin Moore Advance cabinet paint for top coat. Hope this helps!
@@i_try_diythanks for the info what kilz product was it ? I just bought the same sprayer and I love the results you achieved.
@lasherramientasdechuy I used Kilz 2 all-purpose primer
great video 1 question what did you use to hang cabinets on the hanger to paint it
Thank you! I just screwed little cup hooks into the bottom of the cabinets and used those to hang them with hangers, then remove when done and you'll never see the little hole
Hall Donald Taylor Frank Perez Cynthia
Light Oak is a sleeper color for sure
Is the Ready Seal that you used water based or oil based?
It is oil based 👍
Hello, are you interested in testing a smart irrigation controller? It will make watering your lawn much easier🙂
I have one and I agree it is very convenient!
@@i_try_diy Exactly! So, are you interested in trying out our controller? We can offer you a free sample. Compared to other brands on the market, we’ve added many unique features that will make your watering experience more enjoyable.
@Kathy0118 sure! What's the brand?
This worked for me!! Thanks a Ton! Saved lot of money!! In the illinois area I tried this with Kentucky bluegrass
Thanks for sharing - you're very welcome! So glad to hear you got a good result!
@@i_try_diy Thank you for all the hard work and detailed video!! Really helps beginners like me! I have shared this video to some of my neighbors!! There is a grub issue spreading in my area. Do you recommend grub killer over the newly sprouted grasslings? Or should I wait until spring? What is your recommendation?
@s.shankarsateesh7235 I would recommend waiting until your new grass is a bit more established. Probably best to wait until it's growing strong in springtime
@@i_try_diy thank you!! Will wait!!
Thank you. Next please put a mask over your face, even if you are outside.
I always neglect to put on a mask for these tasks...tsk tsk tsk

How did it hold up after 2 years?
It's held up well. Here's a quick update video I made recently. Hope this helps! m.ruclips.net/video/05B_spCNgv0/видео.html
Wow that looks amazing...I liked the mountains in the backdrop lol which county you live in?
I appreciate it! I'm in Utah county

Great result. I did a similar process in my backyard. Unfortunately mine doesn't look as thick as yours. I feel the grass is very thin and lots of weed. I used the same thing for fertilizer pre emergent (scott's). Any recommendations on how to get the germinated grass a bit stronger? Thanks
How long ago did you seed? Was it this season or last? Mine definitely thickened up even more the following year. But I'd also recommend overseeding at about half the rate you initially seeded. That can work wonders for getting it thicker! Some selective herbicide like a 24D can also really help with weed control
Great renovation!! What is your spreader setting? Did you seed the same spot in multiple directions?
Thanks for the comment! I believe I had it on 5 for the fertilizer, and 4 when spreading seed. I didn't necessarily spread the seed in multiple directions, just tried to make sure it was spread evenly!
@@i_try_diy thanks. I just completed my lawn renovation as well. I went a little heavier on the seed, and hoping to get an amazing result as yours.
Awesome, good luck!! I know it's a lot of work I hope it turns out great for you
It's still beautiful. We're about to stain and seal our new pine fence and considering Ready Seal. You helped us confirm this is the product we want! Thank you so much 😊
That's great to hear! Best of luck I hope it turns out amazing for you!
Best stuff ever!
What are you taking out of the spreader @ 4:12 Thx
Good question! Some of the peat moss material clumps up and isn't fine enough to fit through the spreader holes, so I'm just removing and discarding the chunks and twigs that are left in there.
@@i_try_diy got it. 👍 I’ll be renovating one section of my front lawn in a couple of days. First time tackling a project like this 🫰
Good luck you got this! Take your time, and make sure you don't let it dry out once the seed is down 👍
Let me know if any specific questions come up
@@i_try_diy Thanks!
That looks awesome and you were patient letting it all come in over 7 weeks! I tend to get inpatient with growing new grass and overseed areas if I don't see growth coming in. In this case, you being patient was the key. It is going to look great next season.
I appreciate the comment! I'm really happy with the results. Definitely lots of hard work and patience!
Thanks for the video!
You're very welcome!👍
Looks great, try using Gravity L liquid Humic. Apply 4 oz per 1 gallon of water and watch the magic.
Thank you! I appreciate the tip!
how much peat moss vs. sq ft did you end up using?
I used about 6 bails of peat, which are 3 cubic feet each. And it was around 3,000 sq feet of lawn. So around 6 cubic feet per 1,000 sq feet of lawn if my math maths?
The detachers are not in stock, it’s been out of stock for a while, wonder when the will be back.
Here's one that looks very similar to the one I have. I have not tried it, but same price point and good reviews. Might be worth a shot! amzn.to/4d62Ax8

you remind me of another channel. Silver Cymbal i believe
Wow that's a huge compliment thank you, his channel is stellar 🙌
Thanks for this video. Looking at doing my lawn and was a bit hesitant. Your lawn turned out brilliant 👍
Glad to hear it was helpful, I appreciate the comment!! You got this 🤘
I'm turning into that guy... Please stop using glyphosate. It's poison.
Agree with you... I've used it about three times in my life, and this was one of them. I try to avoid where possible! Thanks
nice job!
Thank you! 🙌
looks awesiome
What is your square ft of your back yard? Also how many bails did u use of peat moss And which size package (cubic feet )of peat moss bail did u use?
It's right around 3000 sq feet. I used 5-6 bails of peat moss (3 cubic feet each). Hope that helps!
I love Ready Seal. I've used it several times now, its a very forgiving stain. If you use a wider spray tip in that garden sprayer it will go much faster and you won't need to roll it.
Thanks for the comment! Yeah that was definitely a lesson learned for me that first time around 👍
@@i_try_diy Lol...ya me to!😉
This was helpful. Adding pics from the manual were a useful bonus. Can you speak to the ease (or not) of cleaning it? Paint's probably easy enough, but not sure how something like a water-based poly would add to cleanup time. I own this but it's still in the box waiting its turn in the build process.
Thanks for the comment! I only have experience with paint, and my best advice would be to clean it as soon as you possibly can once you finish. The longer it sits and dries, becomes a lot harder to get clean!
How long after spraying can you lay the seed?
I'd wait at least 10 days. I think I waited 2 weeks.
I’m getting ready to start my first project using this sprayer. You made it look easy. Fingers crossed mine will turn out as nice as yours.
Good luck on your project! Would love to hear how it goes for you
Nice how much peat moss and top soil did u need?
Thanks! I spread two cubic yards of soil, and used about 5 bails of peat moss (3 cubic feet each)
This is a great video, kinda what I was looking for. I really like the color of stain on the cedar. It might have been mentioned, being the video is like 2 years old, but wouldn't an electric HVLP sprayer and back brushing or rolling be the way to go. I have 2 sprayers and they are only $30-40 each on Amazon.
Thanks for the comment! Yes you're 100% right, an inexpensive sprayer is the way to go. I just decided to use what I had lying around, but well worth the $40 investment to save the time and effort. Thanks!
Didn't see you add top layer of top soil
Added thin layer of soil before seeding, and a layer of peat moss after seeding👍
@@i_try_diy okay thanks for responding
@@i_try_diy Do you recommend any specific topsoil or you had some delivered locally.
Pretty much anything will do. If you just get the plain topsoil there's no real nutrients in it, but will still do the job. I ordered some good nutrient rich soil from a local nursery which worked well.
@@i_try_diy Thanks again, wonderful recommendations
What about applying a waterproofing finish?
This product is designed to be essentially waterproof and repel moisture. Not sure about applying an additional product over the top of it
Looks good! What made you pick tttf over ryegrass or bluegrass?
Thank you! The biggest reasons were that it germinates and establishes quickly, it's more drought-tolerant (I live in a desert), and typically more fungus resistant. I don't need the perfect or premium lawn, just something that's functional and low maintenance!
Awesome video !! Great results.
Thank you so much! 🙏
@@i_try_diy do you have a irrigation system or you hand watering ?
I have an irrigation system, but also hand watered areas that get more sunlight or dry out quicker etc. as needed
@@i_try_diy nice ! I was going to hold off on my backyard renovation until next year but I saw your video and couldn’t help but to get started this fall lol. I order my new seed today . My backyard about 2,500 sq feet. Hopefully I could get some similar results as you and I’ll be very happy lol.
That's awesome good luck! You've got this
Looks Great!
Thank you so much! 🙏
Wow, that looks great. I'm a beginner who's going to reseed my lawn. I thought I couldn't put seed in until the beginning of September. I'll start my project as soon as my seed arrives next week.
Good luck! Not sure where you are but just keep an eye on temps, as long as it's not too scorching hot you should be good to go.
@@i_try_diy I'm in the Virginia area and the temperature is between 90 and 95 and it will start to drop next week starting Thursday. And thank you very much for answering here, you've earned yourself a new subscriber.
I appreciate it! Best of luck to you, you got this!
Use a long reach roller frame Why do all that reaching and back bending down? 73 here little wisdom for you been painting my whole life
Thanks for sharing the wisdom!
Looks good! nice job
Thank you! I appreciate the comment 🙏
For raking the dead grass, did you just use a typical leaf rake or did you use something more specialized? Also, with the top soil and peat moss, did you get a special order from a local store or did you just buy bags of material at a box store?
I just used a regular rake for collecting the dead grass, it was pretty brutal but effective. You could also use a mower with a bag, as long as you don't care about your blade getting dull from all the dirt etc. For the soil, I just picked up a truck load from a local nursery and spread it out with a wheelbarrow and leveling tool. Depending on how much soil you need/want to add, you could just grab bags from the store and use those!
Awesome wow no aerating or should i thanks
Aerating definitely won't hurt! But scarifying accomplishes much the same thing, so certainly not necessary. Good luck!
thanks much appreciated
Great job man well done
Thank you I really appreciate the comment!
I'm getting ready to this. I hope I get the same results.
Good luck! It's a lot of work but so worth it in my opinion. Take your time and make sure you're diligent about watering!
