Am an ex cop and very aware of my surroundings etc. Am always watching for thieves no matter where we are. Relaxed for moments in Carcassonne as we were having a great time, and wife got pickpocketed. It happens everywhere.

Italy it's not a safe place anymore, we have too many young guys without any I.D. card, nobody know them name, what they done for living and so on. The suggestion i can give it's useless, because mistake was done here, never left crucial credit card, driver licence and cash into Van, never.

Sad to hear. Been all around Europe in our campers and motorhome and the only place we’ve had problems is Italy. Fortunately (?!) caught someone trying to break in (in broad daylight on a busy main street!) as I just got back to it and chased him off. Spoken to other owners who’ve said the same, including some French who had stones thrown at theirs just to cause random damage. We won’t be returning to Italy to tour 😢

I got pickpocketed in Rome for €100. Just forget it and move on. We were a group so we could get money from the others. But a hassle to stop the creditcards. Went to the policestation, super nice personell, but as you say, they couldn’t help.

There are Eastern European gangs all over Europe, preying for their victims already on the freeways and highways, they follow you, watch you and hit you when they think their time is right. They work in groups of each at least 4. Watch out for stop attempts by total strangers on the roads under whatever pretext, persons who falsely claim to be police and girls suddenly hugging you while screaming for help. These perps are in almost all cases not the Italians or Spanish or French, or Germans,……. but either crime groups out of Eastern Europe or refugees trying to make a living by robberies. Many of them have knives, so watch out.

These crimes are not committed by locals. There are various unscrupulous migrants lurking around. Used to be mostly roma types but now all sorts..
