Never heard this before, and I think of myself as a Prefab Sprout connoisseur! It takes me back to feelings I had when I first heard them… and thenI went to live near Witton Gilbert for 7 years, teaching in a place Paddy knew well, with a couple of his former classmates. This is excellent!

Ah the nostalgia. Just what it used to be.
For so long, Mr. McAloon & Miss. Smith looked like the perfect couple. What the heck happened? All I know is that until recently, Miss. Smith worked at the Sage. Mr. McAloon wears consummately wacky suits, sports a cane, has three children and lives in County Durham. Yes: It is nosey but, fans deserve a little background information every know & then. Even if that information is a simple denial or confirmation concerning certain allegations. It's not hard. It needn't involve paparazzo, either.
They split up sometime between Jordan the Comeback (1990) and Anrdomeda Heights (1997) and both found other partners - Paddy married Victoria, whom he met in a record shop, and Wendy had a child with someone else. So far as I am aware that is all there is to know, nothing else about their break-up or subsequent personal lives has ever been made public.
