Welcome to 50 Climbs By Bike in Utah. The state of Utah has some of the most diverse and difficult road bike climbs in the United States. While you can find statistics on paved climbs in different places, you really can't get a true feel for an ascent without seeing the actual climb. I wanted to provide a visual of some of Utah's most difficult cycling climbs along with pertinent information (such as grade) on each, for those thinking about taking on some of the biggest climbs in the state.

Cedar Canyon Utah Road Bike Climb
Cedar Canyon is a long climb and one of the most difficult in Utah. An easy first half, the second can work you a bit as you ride through a tight canyon in places and eventually along a ridgeline. This is certainly one of the top climbs by bike in the state.

Escalante Canyon East UT Road Bike Climb

The east side of Escalante Canyon is a short climb and one of the more scenic in Utah. Over a variable grade, the hill takes riders from the namesake river through sandstone country. It is an isolated ascent with one challenging ramp along the way. This is certainly one of the top climbs by bike in the state.
Boulder Mountain South Utah Road Bike Climb

The south side of Boulder Mountain is one of the more difficult road bike climbs in Utah. Over a mostly steady grade, the hill takes riders from sandstone country into alpine terrain. It is also an isolated ascent with some of the largest aspen groves around over its second half. This is certainly one of the top climbs by bike in the state.
153 West Eagle Point Utah Road Bike Climb

Today’s hill is the west side of Route 153 up to the Eagle Point Ski Area, a category 1 rated climb that is one of the most difficult in the state. Don’t let its average grade fool you as this is a big climb with sections of stout grade along the way. Its length and elevation gain are the real challenges however as you ride from a high altitude valley up into alpine terrain.

31 West Utah Road Bike Climb

The west side of Route 31 is one of the most difficult climbs in Utah and a top 100 US climb for difficulty. Not a steep ascent, its length is mainly what tests you though its middle core is over solid grade. It climbs to high altitude through impressive canyon and mountain scenery. Certainly one of the top climbs by bike in the state of Utah.

The time it takes to cover 5 miles of difficult grade can seem like an eternity. The state of Utah contains some of the most difficult stretches of this length of paved climbing in the United States. In fact, there are likely only 2-3 other states that can lay claim to having a more difficult group of top 5 climbs. Powder Mountain may be the most difficult road bike climb in Utah. 7.5 miles long, it is its almost 10% average grade that creates the real challenge including a 3 mile stretch that is likely the most difficult segment over that length in the United States. It is also one of the fastest descents in the country. Certainly one of the top climbs by bike in Utah.

Castle Valley/La Sal Mountain Road North is one of the most difficult road bike climbs in Utah. It takes riders from red rock country into alpine terrain. A long ascent, it has its most challenging grade within the last 5 miles. A very solid average grade will test you all the way up to its summit. Certainly one of the top climbs by bike in Utah.

Nice Video - How is the gravel road after the 6.9 miles? Could you continue on a road bike or should it be a dedicated gravel bike?
Possible on a road bike with care (and at least 23's perhaps), peace of mind on a gravel bike
