    Funny. On cats tilt is more speed.....untill you capsize. Adam learned a lot on monohulls I guess. Some time ago my girlfriend learned a few things as well. Her younger sister had a job in Plymouth. She, me and my girlfriend are Dutch. First thing: It was January and thus cold. We stopped for drinks at the pub, The Dolphin. We sat near the fire. My girlfriend and me both reading. Then an Aussi said to my girlfriend: "Excuse me, your boots are on fire". They actually were. The Aussie solved the situation with his pint of Guinness. So I gave him a new one. Next day. Roadtrip. For Karin, my girlfriend, it was her first visit to the UK. I did the driving in a rental car. At a certain moment the navigation system yelled: "Bear left". Karin looked at me, fear in her eyes. She said in Dutch: "Op links zit een beer". I will translate. "On the left there is a bear".

    I must thank you for the inspiration. I think your concept to video your experience of learning and sailing at 60 years old is just fantastic. I was talking to some old band members I used to play music with. We are going to document "putting the band back together" at 70 years old. Yes, a few of us are that age. We all still play our instruments, (some play the best they ever have) we are healthy and we have unlimited time and recording studio access. If nothing else, we are going to have a lot of fun and make awesome memories. By the way the expression "we are putting the band back together" is the threat we often used to tease our wives. They did not like when we were on the road for weeks/months at a time. Thanks again for the inspiration and for letting us borrow your concept!

    I really like the way you can "dock" the boat in England. Very good safety briefing for new crew. Have you considered rigging some simple preventers to avoid unwanted jib? Nice litle story👍

    I love winter cruising, short days but that means short leisurely sails, cool nights but quiet anchorages. Around here it doesn't get quite that cold but nearly sometimes the fishing can be exceptional so a nice fish fry in the shelter of a nearby island a good book and a nice cuppa. (I have a couple of videos on my channel of winter sailing)

    Thanks for the video, we hope to see you on the water soon but need to find a boat first! We're looking for a nice c. 30 foot boat to buy in the Plymouth area but not much of interest at the moment, and what is available seems to be overpriced. I think there was a lot of demand during Lockdown which pushed prices up and haven't come down yet.

  • @markbennett9787

    You’re always going to get water in the bilge because the keel stepped mast will drain there. My 1972 Ballad had a small plastic pipe leading from the mast base into the bilge through a glassed in tube so that the rainwater that got into the mast through the many holes drilled in it for fittings could escape. I think some of the very early Ballads had the batteries in the bilge compartments, it must have been a nightmare. I think that is why no two boats seem to have identical battery stowage nowadays. When I first took the mast down there was what remained of a football bladder in it, obviously an attempt to keep the water in the mast rather than the bilge, another bad idea !

    • @sailingatsixty
      @sailingatsixty 9 месяцев назад

      I always expect a bit in the bilge...but that wasn't too bad after the amount of rain we had!

    Memories of the grey and choppy English channel quickly fade when you are sitting on board in Salcombe watching the world go by enjoying a cocktail. We found Salcombe Rum last summer and since it was after 9 o'clock in the morning accepted a free sample. 3 actually, so we bought a small bottle of the Devon variety, super with ginger beer to make Dark and Stormies 🙂

    Hello from across the pond! I stumbled upon your channel a couple days ago and I love what you’re doing! I’ve been interested in learning to sail for a few months now and bought a used Hobie Cat 17. It’s fun but not what I want. Have been saving my nickels for a mono hull that I can single hand. I just turned 55 a couple weeks ago and I wanted y’all to know how much watching the videos has inspired me. God bless😊
