I asked the ai app on my phone to write an episode of Friends about Earth Overshoot Day and this is what it wrote. FADE IN: INT. RACHEL'S APARTMENT - MORNING RACHEL GREENE is sleeping soundly in her bed. Sunlight streams through the window. She stirs awake and stretches languidly. When her eyes open, she notices something is off. RACHEL Hmm, that's strange. Why is it so quiet? She throws off the covers and pads into the kitchen to start her morning coffee. When she turns on the faucet, nothing comes out. She flips the coffee maker switch - nothing. RACHEL (cont'd) What in the world? The water isn't working. She tries the light switches next. Still nothing. Now concerned, she heads to the window and pulls back the curtains. The street below is eerily still and empty. No cars, no people, no noise. RACHEL (cont'd) Okay, now I'm worried. Something weird is going on. She grabs her phone to call one of her friends but it's dead. RACHEL (cont'd) And no phone! Alright, time to get to the bottom of this. INT. MONICA'S APARTMENT - MORNING Rachel bursts through the door of Monica's apartment, startling MONICA GELLER who is sitting at the counter eating a bowl of cereal by candlelight. MONICA Jesus Rach, you scared me! RACHEL Mon, do you have any idea what's going on? My power and water are out and the whole city seems deserted. Monica sighs heavily. MONICA It's earth overshoot day. They shut everything non-essential down to conserve resources for the rest of the year. RACHEL Earth over-what day? I've never heard of that. Monica rolls her eyes, unsurprised by Rachel's cluelessness about conservation issues. MONICA Earth Overshoot Day marks the date when humanity's annual demand on nature exceeds what Earth's ecosystems can renew in that year. It's calculated by comparing humanity's Ecological Footprint against the planet's biocapacity - or the capacity of ecosystems to regenerate. This year it's August 1st, the earliest it's ever been. Rachel looks flummoxed. RACHEL I have no idea what any of that means. MONICA It means we've already used up all the natural resources the planet can replenish in a single year! We're in ecological debt for the rest of 2023 unless drastic measures are taken. Rachel scoffs. RACHEL Come on, that can't be right. The planet has unlimited resources, that's what they always said. Monica shakes her head frustratedly. MONICA That outdated mindset is what got us into this mess in the first place! Natural resources aren't infinite, Rachel, we need to live more sustainably or there won't be anything left for future generations. Rachel remains unconvinced but Monica barrels on before she can argue further. MONICA (cont'd) All non-essential services and transportation are suspended until January 1st to give the planet a chance to replenish. No one is allowed to drive, take the subway, or spend more energy than the minimum needed to sustain life. It's a necessary response to the climate crisis we're facing. Rachel throws up her hands in exasperation. RACHEL This is ridiculous! How am I supposed to live like this for the next 5 months? No shopping, no Central Perk, no nothing?! MONICA You'll have to adjust like the rest of us, whether you believe in climate change or not. Welcome to a low-impact lifestyle, sister! Now help me light these candles, it's gonna be a long winter. Rachel grumbles under her breath but starts helping light the candles nonetheless. Clearly this Earth Overshoot Day business is in full effect and she has no choice but to go along with it, however begrudgingly. CUT TO: INT. MONICA'S APARTMENT, NIGHT That evening, the gang has gathered at Monica's for a somber candlelight dinner. JOEY is pushing his broccoli around his plate morosely while PHOEBE strums a melancholy tune on her guitar by the flickering lights. CHANDLER and ROSS sip wine and discuss the new normal in hushed tones. Rachel sits sullenly, arms crossed as Monica serves up servings of vegetable stew. JOEY I can't believe this is really happening. No TV, no restaurants, not even delivery pizza! How am I supposed to live without food?! CHANDLER I know buddy, it's an adjustment. But we have to come together and support each other through this thing. ROSS At least the scientists were able to implement these measures in time to stave off immediate disaster. The planet just needs a chance to heal itself for a while. Phoebe strikes a particularly gloomy chord. PHOEBE Yeah but who knows if it will even work. Humans have caused so much damage already. Maybe Mother Earth is beyond repair. The table falls silent at the depressing thought. Rachel suddenly speaks up. RACHEL I still don't understand why any of this had to happen. The planet has an endless supply of resources, right? We're not really going to run out. Monica shoots her an irritated look. MONICA Rachel, I thought we covered this. Resources are not limitless and widespread denial is what got us here in the first place. Your wasteful habits are precisely why measures like this had to be instituted. Rachel glares back defiantly. RACHEL Oh please, like one person could possibly make that much of a difference. Me recycling a few cans now and then isn't going to save the planet. Monica opens her mouth to retort but Joey interrupts. JOEY You know fellas, maybe this is all for the best. Now we have plenty of time to spend together like the old days, playing games and telling stories. Who needs electricity when you've got good friends?! The others offer smiles of agreement, seeing Joey has a point. For now, they'll have to make the best of this new normal and support each other through the challenges ahead. As they dig into Monica's meager meal together by firelight, an air of cautious optimism begins to replace the gloom. The power of community and togetherness may yet give hope that humanity can learn to live more harmoniously with the natural world. CUT TO: INT. MONICA'S APARTMENT, DAY A couple months have passed. The friends have adjusted to life without modern conveniences as best they can. Rachel sits by the window sketching costume designs by daylight when Phoebe enters carrying an armful of kindling. PHOEBE Hey Rach, giving up yet on the whole 'one person can't make a difference' thing? Rachel sets down her work with a sigh. RACHEL I don't know Pheebs, it's really hard. I miss my old life so much. Phoebe adds the wood to the dwindling fire. PHOEBE I know it's an adjustment but you've seen the positive impact small changes can have when we all do our part. The air is so much clearer now, and all the animals are returning to the city. Rachel gazes pensively out at the bustling street below, now filled with pedestrians, bicycles and the occasional horse-drawn cart making deliveries instead of cars. RACHEL You're right, it is pretty amazing to see. I never thought I could live like this but I've actually started to...like it. The slow pace is kind of nice. Phoebe grins, handing her a mug of herbal tea. PHOEBE See? Embracing nature isn't so bad once you open your heart to it. Now come help me gather fallen branches in the park - every little act of service matters. Rachel smiles and accepts the mug, a new sense of purpose lighting within her. As the old adage goes, it only takes a small flame to light a bonfire. Perhaps one person truly can make the difference when joined by many others in common cause. With community and compassion, humanity still has hope to change course for a sustainable future. FADE OUT.
