Click Repair 2-Why Does the Click Not Always Click?
I am still trying to get an antique George Kuehl cuckoo clock main wheel to be smooth and reliable before I put the clock back together. Found some interesting things.
Thanks to @dperry428 for his suggestions and video. This is also a George Kuehl movement in his video. It had lots of good repair info such as replacing trundles on the lantern pinions, repair of a bad main wheel, and putting new teeth on a poorly made second wheel. Good soldering demo too! Check it out if you haven't subscribed to his channel.

Cuckoo Won't Stay Running-What to Check If Your Clock Keeps Stopping
Просмотров 188Месяц назад
This clock has run for 2 months. Then it kept stopping at about 1 o'clock every 12 hours. The cuckoo door was open, and the bird was out. If I pulled the strike side weight a little, it would finish the cuckoo and I could run it again. I needed to put it on the test stand and watch what was happening during the cuckoo to see what might be hanging up.
Reverse Glass Painting for an 1870 New Haven Ogee Clock

The ogee glock I bought had clear glass at the bottom instead of a picture. The hardest part was deciding what to put on the gloass-flowers, a landscape, vintage looking bee hive-the choices were endless. I debated on buying a vintage replacement, printing a picture to apply or ordering a decal to apply. In the end I decided to paint a picture of some flowers that I like.

    FYI you can purchase new great wheels from timesavers. Page 94 of the catalog which sometimes is less of a headache than trying to fix what you have. Even for antique count wheel clocks like this. They dont have them all but they do have a lot. You have to measure the length of the arbor, diameter of the wheel, know the number of teeth, and then compare what you have to the pictures on that page. I have ordered them for some of my clocks where the click system couldnt be fixed. For some reason you tube took me to the second part of this video where you fixed the issue before it took me to this video. Another great video. Keep them coming. God bless you and yours.

  • @dperry428

    The reason the wear on the ratchet took place is that the main wheel arbor is worn, allowing the wheel, on which the click is located to separate from the ratchet, which is located on the chain sprocket part, thus allowing the click to begin to fall between those two parts, putting pressure on the outside edges of the ratchet and tearing up the teeth. When the wear on all parts is enough, the click can actually fall off the ratchet between the main wheel and the chain sprocket. When that occurs, the weight now drops to the floor. You must rebush or replace the brass piece in the chain sprocket to stop a recurrence. You might find some parts of this video to be helpful. It's long, but check out what needs to be done to permanently fix the problem. ruclips.net/video/LPzRD7j-5VA/видео.htmlsi=DLEuP4Appf0sTVKV

      Ok. I haven't reassembled the clock yet. I had to work yesterday. I agree with what you are saying. The pin that holds the wheel to the ratchet is definitely higher than the other main wheel on the clock, and it's hard to get it to apply the right pressure to hold the rachet to the wheel and not be too loose or bind. I will check out your video now. Thanks!

  • @justmike57
    @justmike57 23 дня назад

    I could be wrong, but I use a drop of clock grease in two spots to help the click to slide by with less wear. I feel, if one of the gears becomes missing, you just have to remember when you are winding the clock, too slowly release the chain after winding incase that spot is where the click might have hit. Great you had extra parts for the winder. Great Job.

      I put a little oil on there. I'm finding out there are a few more places than the pinions that need to be lubed. Verge surfaces, crutch wire where the leader wire rubs on it, the clicks...I've done miminal oiling usually because some pieces need to be metal on metal to fall properly. I've learned from this that I'm not paying enough attention to the condition of the main wheel.

  • @bradb4075

    Any GK movement would probably have a similar ratchet wheels, if you can find a donor movement. Another possibility is replacing just that tooth. It doesn't look like a hard procedure. • @dperry428
    @dperry428 24 дня назад

    The problem with cuckoo clocks is at least two-fold. The pendulum is out in the open and susceptible to air movements that disturb the motion of the pendulum. If it's near an HVAC vent, open window, or a door that is frequently opened, there's no hope of it keeping accurate time. The wooden pendulum is also a problem in that it is not only susceptible to temperature change, which causes a change in length and, thus, the period of the pendulum, but also to changes in humidity, which causes a change in the weight of the pendulum, skewing its center of mass. The accuracy of a pendulum is a function of its length to its center of mass. Many clocks have a metal pendulum that is enclosed in a surrouinding case, which reduces the number of problems associated with timekeeping in cuckoo clocks. If a cuckoo is not keeping even close to good time, try moving it to another location with a more stable environment.

    • @cheryladair732
      @cheryladair732 24 дня назад

      @@dperry428 good comments, so many things can affect the exposed wooden pendulum. None of those issues with this location. The two clocks that have been here before ran great-one with a pendulum in a case and one a large cuckoo like this one. Thanks for watching and commenting. Possibly the first pendulum was more susceptible to temperature and humidity due to it's open carvings.

    Might also help to file the hole so that rather than be 100% vertical, it is angled inward so that there are no sharp edges and hole is angled the same angle as the chain is entering. Could also try waxing the hole. Also, rather than wrap the tin tightly, creating sharp edges for chain to catch on, you could leave the tin sticking upward and curved inward, so it guides the chain. And yes, I have seen a situation where it was resistance in the bellow that caused cuckoo to hang.

      Thank you for watching. You can check several things. Make sure the pendulum is not rubbing on the inside of the hole at the bottom of the clock. If it will run without the pendulum, you may need to check the U wire coming off of the post at the top of the movement. Sometimes it is worn with slight grooves, and the weight of the pendulum will make it stop. If it is worn, it will need to be replaced. Also check to make sure the pendulum leader wire is not rubbing on the cuckoo bellows lift wires. The weight of the pendulum can make it hang a little closer and cause them to rub. Sometimes you can see that best by looking one of the side doors. Good luck!

      @cheryladair732 Месяц назад

      @@albertocomajuan3215 is the lift wire attached to the bellows by a thin lift wire? Sometimes they fall off when you transport them. If the bellows are leather, they can be stiff from the clock not running for years. And make sure there is not a clip holding the bellows shut for transport.

      @@albertocomajuan3215 the lift lever that pushes the wire up needs to be adjusted. They can be bent to where they need to be. Use two pliers. Hold the lever in place with one plier near where it comes out of the clock, and bend the middle up or down, whichever way you need with the second set of pliers.

    Wowie zowie, that cuckoo is way bigger than I was envisioning! Nice to see you solved the pendulum wobble. Lots of the same issues I am having to solve with my OG. I have the same issue with my movement platform wobbling when I wind it, it moves enough that it has stripped the stabilizing block out twice in the past, so I may just put a screw and nut all the way through the back to secure it tightly, so that it can't possibly strip out the hole again.

    • @cheryladair732
      @cheryladair732 Месяц назад

      That's what my husband said when I put the clock on the shelf. It's 25" tall if I remember right. Oh you meant the giant cuckoo. I've been measuring the clock, chains, and weights to see how much space I need. It's going to take about 10 feet. Thanks for the catalog pictures. I've made a new stabilizing block to install, but the hole in the back of the case looks pretty large on mine also. I was debating on the bolt and nut idea also. Do you wind it with a regular key or the crank type?

    • @bradb4075
      @bradb4075 Месяц назад

      @@cheryladair732 I bought a crank type. Makes a world of difference when winding. Totally worth it. Let me know if you would like a photo of the stabilizing block, I thought mine was missing when I got the clock, but then found it lodged down in the base of the movement. Would love to watch the reverse painting being done, if you record that.

    I think that you should add the web site that you were looking at to the description of this video. You are a very great clock repair person. Your observation is what makes you stand out. Lots of people dont observe things like you do. Just like the winding of the string. Good point . Love that antique cuckoo clock. It is frickin huge. The bible says that thou shall not covet they neighbors stuff. We arent neighbors. LOL. I love it. Congratulations as I know that you told me that you have been wanting this clock for awhile. Love it. Love it. Love it. Did I tell you that I love it? LOL. Another great video on repairing the OG wall clock. Send GW a complaint on their site. 99% of the time they either gave me a full refund or a partial refund. Good luck. Looking forward to the next video. Thanks for the shout out. God bless you and yours.

      I added the web pages for the labels and movements. There is more good stuff on that website. You have many beautiful clocks. My collection is tiny, but I have been searching for this clock since I saw it in a vintage Hubert Herr ad about a year and a half ago. The good part is I found two. One was in Germany at the Hubert Herr factory. I emailed them about it , but they would not ship it to the U.S. No telling where it is now that they have closed. The other one was right here in NC, so it was meant to be mine! I love it also. It is only a few inches smaller than me! Thanks for watching.
