Growing Sugar Baby Watermelons in a Cool UK Summer: Harvest & Taste Test
I’ve been growing Sugar Baby watermelons in my greenhouse here in the UK. This year’s cooler weather has made them grow more slowly than usual, and they’ve turned out smaller than expected. As the vines started to dry up, I decided it was time to harvest. When I cut them open, the melons weren’t as ripe as I had hoped-the flesh wasn’t the deep crimson I was aiming for. Still, they had that classic watermelon flavour and were sweet enough to enjoy, so I couldn’t resist digging in! #SugarBabyWatermelon #GreenhouseGardening #UKGardening #HomegrownFruit #WatermelonHarvest #GardeningTips #CoolWeatherGardening #SmallSpaceGardening #FreshProduce #GardeningJourney

Farewell Goji Berry: Replacing with Pineapple Guava (Feijoa sellowiana) standard in My UK Garden.
Просмотров 11614 часов назад
In this video, I share the ups and downs of growing a Goji berry plant in my UK Zone 9 garden. I purchased the plant from Morrison's garden center back in March 2021, but after years of trying, I've only managed to harvest a small handful of berries. Over time, my Goji berry plant has been repeatedly affected by powdery mildew, a fungus that prevents the leaves from photosynthesizing, causing t...

Let’s talk greenhouse. It’s the 3rd November and many trees in my UK garden has started to go dormant, so I think its now the time to prepare my Polycarbonate greenhouse (L183cm X D130cm X H198cm) bought in 2014, to overwinter my tender exotic plants. Last year 13/11/2023, I bought a Walk-In Polyethylene Greenhouse (L180cm x D100cm x H168cm) to assemble inside the polycarbonate greenhouse for a...

Searching for St. Maarten's Guavaberry & Exotic Island Fruits | A Caribbean Adventure!

Having read in our cruise ships tour guide that Guavaberry (Myrciaria floribunda) was the national drink of St. Maarten; I was eager to get ashore to find the tree when the ship docked in Philipsburg, the Dutch sector of St Maarten. The travel brochure also said that the Guavaberry should not be confused with a tropical guava. I soon found out that the tree mainly grew on the French side of St....

I absolutely love hot peppers…the hotter the better. Amazing job with your plants Mike 🤩🌱 Let’s take a bite 😂😂 🔥

I don't grow them but I suspect this Summer has been a shocker for watermelons 😥
I'm sure they would have done much better if we had had a warmer Summer. Your chilli plants look amazing though!! I already miss fresh chillies.
Those clouds over Florida look to be a gathering rainstorm. You went right from the take off to the approach into Charlotte, never showing if you went totally above the clouds, where the sun is shining brightly.
The cooler weather this year has made it extremely difficult to grow many of our more exotic fruits to ripeness. Still, an achiement to grow that Watermelon, Mike. Your chilli's and scoth bonnet peppers look amazing. Once I fix up my allotment plot I plan to grow some there.
Thanks Dominic, I love growing watermelons and hot Chillies, but they too need hot weather for the majority of peppers to fully ripen. Unfortunately, this has not happened this year and now is the time to prep the plants for overwintering.
Please don't forget to give me a thumbs up, share and subscribe for more about the exotics I am growing. Until next time, happy gardening.
A Nursery owner in my Facebook group and a former Goji berry grower writes: .even in the years it fruited the yeild was small for the size of plant. Apparently there are two varieties. The one offered by nursery's is the one prone to mildew and low yields. The other isn't offered in uk .
Pls what the name of the Avocado?
Nike It a grafted ‘Day Avocado’ pear (A ‘Day’ Avocado is a cross between a Guatemalan and West Indian avocado that produces pear-shaped fruit that's easy to peel and has a buttery, sweet taste), I do not know the rootstock on which it is growing.
Beautiful new Pineapple Guava Specimen Mike. I think you’ve made a very wise decision to replace your Goji berry 🙌🏾
Good riddance to the goji lol, as you know I gave mine away. They had standard shape pineapple guavas at my local nursery but as they were unnamed and I had no space I left them lol. Your specimen is a nice shape and size 👍
Thanks Brett. Lol my garden is overrun with Pineapple guavas. I have 5 unnamed varieties and 2 recently acquired Mammoth plants from Burncoose. I chose the mature unnamed variety standard because (1) it replicates some of the weeping form of the Goji berry and I can train more branches to do the same. (2) It takes up about the same room as the Goji berry and I have planted it in a way to help keep it from growing into a huge tree. (3) I can readily graft other pineapple guava varieties to it. I am in fact thinking of asking Joe for a scion from his massively successful home named “bubblegum” pineapple guava.
Your new feijoa looks beautiful, Mike! It has a lovely form to it. I saw a photo of an incredible specimen in Spain recently, it was a large tree but had a lovely weeping form. If I had the space I would try to grow one into that shape, although in my garden I’ll have to keep them as small bushes/shrubs.
Thanks Peter. A standard trained to give a weeping form to replace the goji berry was just what I wanted. I was also mindful of the available space in my garden and I feel that the standard could be pruned to keep it from growing into a massive shrub that is the tendency of the Pineapple guava plant.
How were you trying to contain/ kill the powdery mildew?
Logan I have tried spraying with solutions of (1) hydrogen peroxide (2) Potassium Chloride (3) solution of (apple cider vinegar with baking soda) from time to time to try and keep the powdery mildew at bay, but it keeps coming back and destroying the flower buds. I have read that the mildew is more than a moisture problem and that the plant cannot cope because the soil pH is too low. I was advised to adjust the pH up, to the high side of optimal for the plant by adding potash, lime, and such as it could make a huge difference. (4) I therefore tried treating the soil with a solution of Potash and baking soda to see if it makes a difference in keeping the powdery mildew at bay and promote fruit setting but to no avail.
@@myexoticfoodplants6727 quite extensive effort. The vinegar and soda mixture has me scratching my head? Chemically they would neutralize themselves and you would have a slightly fertilized water. Do you only grow organic?
@@LoganShelton-rh3lp I am growing a variety of exotic food plants in the UK mostly in containers. I have effectively 5 to 6 months of growing time. From the end of October, many of my plants have to grow under cover. I have to be careful with the energy consumed to keep them alive. Some are brought inhouse and some are overwintered in my greenhouse where I try to maintain a temperature 0f 4 def C. No, with container gardening in my microclimate and growing time I use chicken pellets supplemented with liquid fertilizers.
Very beautiful flowering tree. Will be waiting to see the amazing results next year. Thanks for sharing 👍 4:38 ❤
Thanks Mamashand
That's a nice Feijoa, Mike. Great to have one in a standard form too. I'm really looking forward to the update ideo of it next year, it's going to be spectacular. Sorry for the loss of your Goji. You definetly made the wise decision though.
Thanks so much Dominic, looks like I have now become a pineapple guava addict. I love the plant for its foliage, edible flowers and delicious tropical like fruits, and of course it is suited to the microclimate of my garden with minor overwintering worries.
Please don't forget to give me a thumbs up and subscribe for more about the exotics I am growing. Until next time, happy gardening.
Its doing great now that its established after 8 years Mike, good size fruit, growing in ground is the key to success without a doubt
Absolutely Brett and lest hassle. The only thing that I will now seek to do is to get a good non astringent scion to graft to this tree.
Small but perfectly formed 👍
Thanks Brett. Hope it will do better next season with improved feeding.
So pleased to see you harvesting your very own Rojo Brilante Persimmons. Enjoy Mike 🤩🙌🏾🌱
Thanks Joe. Needless to say you are boss when it comes to success with growing Persimmons. I have been following you for years.
Congratulations! I have heard that they taste like apples...is that true?
Thank you Dani. It depends on the stage at which they are eaten. Freshly picked, they are crunchy like an apple with a slight taste like granny smiths to me, but as they age texture and taste more like a date.
@myexoticfoodplants6727 I have only tasted dried ones that I found in TKMaxx, crazily enough😆 I agree: they tasted very date-like🙂
They are so beautiful in the fall. Even prettier when all the leaves are gone and the fruit is till hanging
Thank you Logan. Yep, they can give the appearance of bulbs on a leafless tree.
How delicious!! You have done so well keeping it nice and short so you can reach the fruit.
Thank you Dani. Nothing more fulfilling than walking in the garden and picking your own fruit.
@myexoticfoodplants6727 that's so true!
Wow .. that tree has really done well for you this year, Mike. Very nice sized fruit indeed. Persimmon trees make a great addition to a UK garden. The foliage is beautiful at all times of the year and the fruit is a real bonus. 👍🏽
Thank you Dominic. Hands down, its my favourite fruit tree in the garden and I love the Persimmon fruit. I have no more room for another tree in my garden, BUT I would like to get hold of a non astringent scion to try grafting to this tree.
Please don't forget to give me a thumbs up and subscribe for more about the exotics I am growing. Until next time, happy gardening.
which city is this?
Port St Lucie, Florida
Hopefully you will get more jujubes next year and large ones too.
Thank you Nirmala
How old is your jurasic one Mike? Where did you get the other 2? I bought 2 from jurasic this year. For taste, Indian jujube is the best. You can eat them when green too. If you have space I can bring one in for you.
I bought a 20cm tall JuJube ( Ziziphus Jujuba ‘Dong’) Chinese date off Jurassicplants in august 2021. It is now 85cm in height and was overwintered out in my garden without any protection for the last two winters. The mature Li and Lang Jujubes featured in this video are 2 to 2.3M in height and was acquired from ebay in June 2022 following a tip from Joe’s Tropicals. The 'dong' seedling will take years to bear fruit Nirmala. Sorry I have no more space in my garden. In fact I have got rid of underperforming plants like Goji berry in my garden to make room for more productive ones.
@@myexoticfoodplants6727 It’s ok, I will drop off Indian jujubes to you from my plants once they start producing fruits
Please don't forget to give me a thumbs up and subscribe for more about the exotics I am growing. Until next time, happy gardening.
Greeting
I enjoyed the tour around your garden, Mike! Your citrus trees look incredibly healthy, as does your tamarillo! I loved all your Bougainvillaeas, one of my favourite flowering plants. They remind me of being on the Mediterranean coast. I'll have to get one next year. I really hope we have a mild winter this year, but I'm sure with your winter protection all your plants will do incredibly well 🤞
Thanks Peter. I have recently moved 5 off my citrus in my Orangery and constructing grow tents for some of the others. It is also time to move the Bougainvilleas and more of my tender plants under cover.
@@myexoticfoodplants6727 Yeah, I think I'm going to start moving my citrus into the greenhouse soon. On my phone, it's currently showing a potentially very cold night next weekend. Hopefully, it changes, but currently, it's showing a low of -3°C Sunday into Monday (17-18th) 😱. I have a lot of prep to do this coming week if that is the case.
@@PeterEntwistle Yes Peter we have gotten away with a few weeks of grace this year. It's definitely time to get winter protection in place.
Good job bro @arubby
Thank you Arubby
Looks lovely Mike. You’re making me look forward to fruit next year. I removed flowers from my plants as they are not too big.
Thanks Nirmala. I have no doubt that your Pineapple guavas will eventually fruit for you. Some of my plant flowered in the early years, but I just left them, because the plant will naturally abort the flowers if does not have the size or constituent to support fruiting.
Enjoyed very much! thank you.
It is a rather long video Longan, so thank you for watching.
Thank you Mike, I've actually been waiting for a long time for you to do a proper tour and round up of many of your plants, very exciting to see how well everything is doing. You've really cracked getting so much to succeed, especially the tamarillos 👍
Thanks Brett. I have of course been inspired by much of your work, else I might have given up long ago. Right now I am fighting with trying to succeed with the grafting process. So far every graft I have attempted this year has failed. I am beginning to think that the best time is in the spring when sap in the plants are rising. There is still a long way to go in my gardening journey , because I have 4 American Pawpaws on the other side of my garden and I have yet to grow a single fruit. I can only look at you and Dominic with envy Lol.
@@myexoticfoodplants6727 yes grafting is my weakness unfortunately, I've only succeeded 2 or 3 times in the last couple of years so far out of maybe 20 attempts 🙄
Amazing garden tour, Mike. Your Tamarillo looks amazing. Love your Chilean guava with all the fruit on it. Your Bougainvillea are spectacular ... so many beautiful plants. Thanks for the tour, I really enjoyed seeing some of your amazing collection.
Thank you very much Dominic. The original Tamarillo cuttings came from you, so you are certainly the originator of the success I have had with growing this plant. I also have quite a few other plants that originate from you and they too are doing well.
Please don't forget to give me a thumbs up and subscribe for more about the exotics I am growing. Until next time, happy gardening.
Isn’t it great to be able to harvest your homegrown Subtropical fruit in your garden. Congratulations Mike 🙌🏾
Thank you Joe. You have inspired me ver the years.
Congratulations, Mike. I'm so pleased for you. Nice amount of the jelly inside and not a bad sized fruit. 👍🏽
Thank you so much Dominic. I am feeling on a high Lol
I assume there's a longer version of the video to come Mike ? Would like to have seen more of the tasting. The skin on some is very bitter and spoils the sweetness of the flesh so taking a full bite isn't always the best way to taste 😉
The e will be plenty more videos to come Brett. I have two fruiting trees, so I will be harvesting and doing some taste comparisons later down the line. I am becoming an addict of the plant and have just ripped out a Goji Berry plant and will be replacing it with a Pineapple guava standard.
Welcome Do the sabota white , black and chico trees bear fruit from seed or do they need grafting? Thank you
Hi djerroudi, In general a grafted plant will bear fruit faster than a plant grown from seed.
@myexoticfoodplants6727 thank you 💐
Simply amazing Mike 🤩 well done 🌱
Thanks Joe
Mike your plants are going to be nice and cosy over the winter that’s for sure 🙌🏾
Thanks Joe, I will have to start getting them in soon. Its feeling chill in the evenings.
You've built an incredible collection Mike, fantastic video 👍
Thanks Brett
Wow , OMG I can’t believe how big they are. I love Mangoes. I hope when they grow bigger I get to taste them. You did a fantastic job. Best of luck . Do not forget to share yummy yum yum
They look amazing Michael. Ive not had much success keeping any alive. I can get them to root and sprout but i seem to get the watering wrong as they seem to dry up or root rot occurs. I may try again but i dont have a greenhouse anymore they would have to go in ground. The 2 you sent me, the one i kept sadly did not make it but the other one i gave to the Parrswood horticultural centre is huge.
Cold temperatures and frost can kill sugarcane Louise, and Sugarcane plants need to keep actively growing for optimal sugar production. Sugarcane rely on a continuous supply of water, nutrients, sunlight and elevated temperatures to maintain that growth. If growth slows down or stops, especially due to a lack of water or nutrients, the plant's leaves can start to dry out, turn brown resulting in die back.
You have a lovely collection of sugarcane varieties, Mike! I've been impressed with the growth of my purple sugarcane in the greenhouse this year. I just hope I can get it through the winter indoors 🤞
Thank you Peter. The purple sugarcane is the fastest grower in my collection. I also know of at least 3 people who have successfully grown the purple sugar cane either indoor or in a frost free greenhouse.
