Jim Matt performing a front-end inspection, in advance of a wheel alignment
Jim has been iconic in the Reno / Sparks area of Northern Nevada for his conscientiously performed wheel alignments, which is a result of his 51 years of experience at Sunshine Service. As you can see, he's working in an old fashioned alignment pit, so that the work can be performed at a high level. The alignment machine is a very late model Hunter alignment machine which has the ability to do cars, light trucks, medium duty trucks and heavy duty trucks, such as semi trucks. We also do a lot of motorhome alignments and trailer axle alignments, in which case the axles are slightly bent to return them to original spec's, aligning the wheels to track perfectly behind the towing vehicle, keye...

What a pleasant surprise to find that one of our 8am appointments this morning drove all the way from Georgia to get their travel trailer aligned, here at Sunshine Service in Sparks, NV, on their cross country vacation to California and beyond. They wore a tire out on the trip, but we trust that they will not wear any more tires on the rest of their vacation.

Trailer Axle Straightening and/or Wheel Alignment
Very cool! Get rid of tire feathering too?
I’m just amazed that people do not make round tires blows me away
It’s not necessarily that the tires aren’t round, but a rim that is not turned from a solid piece of metal is not going to be truly round.
My father had this done on a brand new set of tires back in '73. We could not believe how much smoother the car drove on the freeway. Dad cringed when he saw fresh rubber being cut off, but it really made a difference. I am surprised I haven't seen a shop do it since then.
what is the point of shaving the tire tho?
@@rickjames5998 The tires are not "round" when they come out of the mold. As you can see in the video, he is trimming off the high spots. After a while he will not be trimming off little chunks, but very thin long thin strips, similar to peeling an apple. After this, you balance. Driving down the freeway makes you wonder why you never did this before.
@@rickjames5998 On a track day, with a car that has no abs, I have braked too hard while going about 180kph, my front right wheel blocked, and caused a flat spot on a tyre. Ive tossed one tyre already because vibrations were not bearable. Year after same thing happened but i was far quicker to release the brake, causing only minor flat spot which causes vibrations over 100kph. It is bearable now but still shakes the whole car, this method on the video would fix that tyre, as it still has plenty of thread life left. Sadly no shop around has such machine.
In case anyone asks, this video is just a candid shot of one of our great technicians, Jim Matt, performing a pre-alignment front end "shake down", as it's called, to determine if anything needs to be addressed before the alignment heads are attached and we get the pre-alignment wheel readings, in advance of making any necessary adjustments to get the alignment dialed in correctly. Jim has working at Sunshine Service for 51 years this year. There is a very old school work ethic displayed here in this video.
I have bought a set of M/T tires and they have some cupping not to bad tho. Would truing them work to get them back to normal ? Thanks for the video !

I made a video how you can shave/true a tire a home
Your video is terrible!
Your method is very unsafe and could cause serious injury and shouldn't be done the way you did it.
Do all my tires need to have the same tread?? I have a fwd
4x4 needs same outside diameter measurement so that transfer cases and differentials don't fight the rotation of different sized tires.
I have a set of Brand new Bridgestone Duelers that are out of Round, have had them re-balanced twice with little help, would be nice to have a shop that cuts high ridge off of tires....
@Peter Slogan umm... road force would be almost zero if the tire is shaved and then put on a road force machine to check for road force feedback. All radial run out is taken out no matter where the tire is at on the rim when it is a shaved. Imagine not having to mount, dismount, and remount a low profile tire (hoping you can get the tire to right spot because it won't move when mounted) on to only take out some of the road force feedback but not all of it. And hoping the rim doesn't spin on the road force machine, the rim must be marked to the machine prior to road force balancing or improper readings occur. Shave it.
Anyone know of a shop around Dallas that does this?
Hi Rahul: We wouldn't know the anwser to that. But, you can spin up the tires and see if they're out of round in most cases, if you have the shop, or you, raise the tire in the air and spin it. If it's out of round you can generally see it visually while it's going around. If it is, and no tire truing is available in your area, you may also find that the shop might be able to re-mount the tire on the rim in a new position, like 180 degrees from it's current position. That can sometimes correct the problem. But, if the car has been sitting for a long time, sometimes the flat spots on the tire just need to be driven for a while to get them out. Try finding a shop in the area that has a Hunter Roadforce balancer if it's a car, or a Hunter Forcematch balancer if it's a larger truck tire, and see what they can do for you, if no tire truing is available in your area. Roadforce and Forematch are patented trademarks for machines that Hunter Engineering makes, that can sometimes correct balancing issues at a higher level than a typical tire balance machine can. But, if else fails, you may have to purchase new tires, if no tire truing is available in your area.
Thanks for your response Mark. The tire I'm trying to get shaved however is a new one so it has no imperfections. The reason I'm trying to get it shaved is that I have an AWD car and the new tire has a tread difference that's making my center diff unhappy in the lower gears. I haven't been able to find a shop here in Dallas unfortunately. I might have to trade in my old tires for new.
Right, okay. I've been told that Tire Rack will shave a tire to your spec's if you ask them to. If you have a Tire Rack in your area you could give them a call and ask. If so, and if you haven't mounted the new tire yet, whomever you purchased the new tire from will likely refund your money, I would think.
Yes. This is actually one of the most common uses of the technology.
Is it possible to use this to do one new tire so you don't have to replace all 4 tires for a AWD? Tire shave a new tire down to the same tread wear as the other 3 used tires if one is unrepairable. Thanks
I know this is 5 years old. But have you ever figured out the answer? I’m in the same boat and don’t want to replace all 3 tires when one blew out.
We ended up buying all new tires.
@@easygoingday8980 Yes, shaving a new tire down to match the other three will keep you from having to buy a full set on an AWD car.
@@earlbrown yeah, I’m aware of tire shaving, but I literally don’t know ANYONE who does it lol. Ironically, I just got a nail in my sidewall today… I need to replace 1 tire or all 4 tires because I got AWD :/
@@easygoingday8980 Same. I finally bought at tire shaving machine a week ago for myself. Thought about trying to make money with it, but it'd probably be a waste of time since nobody has ever heard of tire truing anymore. And I life in the south where there's big ass trucks all over the place with cupped mudgrips (and donks on shitty taco'd wheels)
When I had my winter tires mounted recently for the second winter season I noticed that my car vibrates somewhat at around 90 km/h and it sort of smooths out beyond that. Is it the fact that I'm having the tire removed and put back on the same rim twice a year the reason? Could I have damaged the belts or anything?
Dashcam Dumbasses I would find a cheap set of steel wheels to mount the winter tires onto. Will save you money on the long run and if you’re already storing the tires it makes no difference
That's exactly what I'm looking for! I have a very rare size of 185/60/13 tires that are nearly impossible to find in Canada - and guess what, they aren't round - from new! My suspension is quite stiff (Fiat X1/9) and that translates into a vibration that is not pleasant.. Problem is, no one knows what tire shaving is in Toronto, ON Canada.. I'm also impressed that you're doing it on what appears to be used tires - as I thought most shops only did new tires only. Very impressive service you guys provide! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks. Interesting that no one in your area can do this. You might have to travel a little. It's not new technology. Another thought is, try calling around to find a tire shop that has a Hunter Roadforce balancer, and they may be able to balance at a higher level that most balancers, which might take care of your problem.
No body within atleast 2 hours of where i live can true a tire. 1 place does have a road force machine. I used to work there. But they basically never used it. They are a regional chain called Dunn tire. Around buffalo ny area. And they just want cars in and out. It was ridiculous. My old manager there expected us to mount and valance 4 tires and have the vehicle in and out within 15-20 mins. Worked like a dog all day. Got damn good and vast at doing tires tho. Haha. Messed my elbow up for life from that stupid job. And they only want you there to work in the rush seasons. Spring and fall. For all the winter tire changeovers... We actually used to store everyones winter tires during the summer in a giant upstars warehouse area. Minimum wage job. Horrible. But where i live sometimes you just gotta take any job you can get for the time being.
this is a commercial, not an axle straightening you fucken loser!
Check out the other more informative video on the topic in our collection.
So, I have a tire that can go 30k miles, I pay you $40 to take off 10k miles? Would be better to just buy new tires!?
More or less. If it's out of round you won't want to drive on it very long. Or, you may have an all wheel drive vehicle and a tire hazard issue and need to replace one tire. You could buy all four so that they'd all be the same outside diameter, as is required on all wheel drive vehicles. Or, you could just buy one, shave it, and save a lot of money. If the tires have little tread on them already, it makes sense to just buy new tires all around.
Also, driving a car with new tires that are no round is pretty easy to diagnose, and nothing you can do except for truing them. Some tire manufacturers will take them back if you haven't driven on them much. Sometimes you'll find a vibration can't be fixed with balancing alone, if it's because of tires being out of round. This is an old technology solution that still has its applications.
In answer to your question, yes, it is only spinning. It flexes the belts and rubber to replicate driving, to get any flat spots out that may have been caused by sitting. This helps to make sure we don't shave something that doesn't need it. Sometimes tires are only temporarily out or round due to storage with the weight of the vehicle on it, and just needs to be driven a while, or spun on a machine like this to get it round again. Keep in mind, if tires are too old, they may be bad.
what does the machine at 0:49 do? Looks like it's only spinning.
Simply warming the tire up similar to driving down the road a short distance. Eliminates the flat spots and warms the rubber so the cutting operation gets the best (most concentric) results.
