"I question if this game is even meant to be all that serious". Of course it isn't. Wallow in it. If Fire Emblem has a theme as a series, it is young person unexpectedly having to take responsibility for their life when parent fails them in a crisis (usually by getting themselves killed). And by rising to the crisis save their friends, their home town, their country, the world... Of course many (most?) RPGs feature this but Fire Emblem does emphasise the suddenness - they are personal coming-of-age stories, for players to relate to emotionally rather than intellectually. (Does 3 Houses go against the mold there?) What, video games are written for kids and teenagers to enjoy - shock! Engage has a twist, it is a giant tease: Alear is the main character gameplay-wise, but the real story isn't Alear's, it is somebody else's seen and told by Alear (oops, spoiler). Caveat: I know this not from playing but from watching a play-through series here on RUclips, but having brought me almost to the end the series went off to showcase the dlc and never came back to finish the main game. Leaving me wondering if Engage's writers had the courage of their convictions to complete the real story, or if they bottled out at the end and back-seated the other character to boost Alear after all.

I agree with pretty much everything here. This game is mechanically amazing while having a super disappointing story. The engage rings are so cool, boss battles are the best they’ve ever been in the fire emblem series (and this one isn’t even close), the levels are well designed, and you have a lot of flexibility when it comes to engage rings. The pacing falls apart though near the end with all the engage ring paralogues, and I imagine the balancing of the game also falls apart with all the extra dlc experience (I think this game is probably better without the dlc, honestly) So I pretty much found myself thinking the same thing. Game was insanely fun, and I also left myself disappointed in a few areas.

Lately I've been watching "Fire Force" and "Ayla Sometimes Hides Her Feelings In Russian", so far both are really good. Definitely recommend to watch

FE 9 and 10 have the best stories and world-building in the series. I will die on that hill. I hate that they have leaned so far into the social sim aspect with three houses. I don't want to do a bunch of extra shit in between maps, events are so freaking stupid. But I'm not naive enough to think that they will ever return to the simplicity that these two games offer and that makes me sad.

Generalist was definitely a must so am not counting that in my build. Quick question, was I dumb when I made Shu into black magic guardian? Basically a magic aoi tank?

As someone who bought the game on release: Damn, this review hits hard. 19 years later and damn, I'd rather play this game (or any of the other pre Fates-Games, for that matter) than any of the newer games. Kinda feels weird to hear a review from the viewpoint of utilizing Three Houses as a base, something you don't often hear in the fandom and yeah, from 3H as a base, PoR seems kinda antiquated, but yeah, I really miss those old "There's one promotion for your class and that's it". Really started disliking the "everyone can be everything!" mentality of newer games. It just takes away from the characters imho. Imagine Soren as a Paladin. It just doesn't fit. The same thing goes for Mercedes as an Armor Knight in Three Houses. It's just so weird. And those old recruitments are one of my favorite parts, especially those completely obscure ones like the re-recruitment of Shinon and Stefan. And on the note of prepromotes (and especially Titania in this case): In most cases, they are actually great units and if anything, people should use them more. Especially the Seth/Sigurd-Subtype of those Prepromotes (which Titania is part of). They are probably some, if not outright the best units in the game. But that's a debate that's been going on for literally decades at this point, so the short of it: Oscar can, statistically speaking, never outclass Titania, who is able to already basically solo the entire game with a few select key exceptions, either by not being available or by outright being unable to deal damage. Oh, and for the love of whatever being you believe in: Do NOT buy this game from second hand places. I like PoR. But damn, those prices should only be paid by people who really truly collect either Nintendo games, GC games specifically or are Fire Emblem Collectors. But paying basically the same than a limited edition of Thracia 776? Yeah, no. Oh, and one last point: The western versions of PoR are missing the japanese Maniac Mode and instead get an Easy mode, so it's not a mistranslations, it's just literally us missing a difficulty level in exchange for one of the easiest Modes in Fire Emblem history.
