    A good frank discussion, I still have my reservations on entering competitions, I have done in the past , but Tony's inside info on the competition world has raised a few points to consider. I still can't shake ❤the feelings of nepotism, but competitions have come a long way and are probably better now at dealing with that , but nothing's perfect and I'm sure it still raises its head. The other thing that seemed to be an issue a few years ago was airiel photography, there always seems to be a genre that dominates and you get the feeling sometimes you don't stand a chance unless you submit that, I'm probably wrong , and don't get me wrong , the aerials are fabulous they look fantastic framed and presented in huge prints.

    • @MattPayne
      @MattPayne 14 дней назад

      All valid points. For my competition we have an aerial category but to win overall you need to showcase a wide variety of work… not just a crazy set of aerials…

    What a remarkable group of women! Thanks for shining a light on their work, Matt. I love what they're doing with OPA and the collaborative, big tent approach they're taking. I really appreciated Martha's point about the need for us to feel like we can all be ourselves whether the group is a single gender or mixed. It's possible if there's psychological safety, and that can't be taken for granted (even within a demographically similar group); it has to be cultivated intentionally and held as a value by the entire group. Anyway, seriously looking at the Feb conference, and if I can't make that, hope to join another event in the near future. Thank you, Shanda, Martha, and Jeanie, for the time, energy, and smarts you're putting into OPA!! ~Beth B

    One of the things I've noticed with photographers displaying metal prints at art fairs is they are overly saturated and almost cartoon like. So with that in mind when I ordered my first few metals I backed off on the saturation from my paper print file and they turned out great. Vivid colors but not garish. The other thing I noticed with other photographers was their metal prints were very soft in comparison to the same paper prints they had on display. Not sure if that was the photographers file prep or the lab they used on the metals. My local lab seems to do pretty well but I have not compared side by side with competition.

    • @MattPayne
      @MattPayne Месяц назад

      Good points. Metal doesn't do a great job of showcasing finer details as we discussed on the podcast here. Great point about saturation as well. That is especially problematic on glossy metal.

    When you upsize an image for printing, do you use Gigapixel or Photoshop? I tried Gigapixel years ago and it worked decent but found Photoshop does a much better job than it used to so haven't tried the new Gigapixel.

    • @MattPayne
      @MattPayne 2 месяца назад

      Ask 10 photographers you might get 10 answers. For lower resolution files that you're looking to get printed larger than is advised, I do find gigapixel to work "OK" but again you have to be careful for really gnarly artifacts that get created. I duplicate my layer in PS and then fix issues that Gigapixel introduces. I never upscale in PS, and most print labs suggest you shouldn't either. I actually have a podcast coming out soon about this.

    Taking photos is fun, it gets me outside for experiences. But I decided to do art fairs this year, and seeing my images printed on large metal and acrylic really brings all the work I have put in feel finished. Beyond that, it's the reaction from people coming into my booth at a fair and really enjoying the images. I think that gives me more joy than anything else. I think all photographers need to print some of their images. Just my opinion. The lines he was talking about in the GFX camera is Phase Detect sensor lines. I run into it when shooting IR, even in the raw files. Kolari Vision has a tutorial about how to get rid of them using Topaz Denoise AI.

      Hey Rob, I agree that we should print more! I'd even say if you can do it in a non-commercial way it can still be quite satisfying. BTW, using Topaz for super contrasty images still does not eliminate all of the sensor lines on an IR image, unfortunately!

      @@MattPayne Do you know much about Phase detect sensor lines? I never had them in my Sony A7r full spectrum but then when I got my A7riv full spectrum, they show up. Not in every image but that may be due to the different filters. Mostly in the higher nm filter range like the 720 or 830. Is it due to the higher number of pixels between the cameras?

      @@robtt27 Good question! I wish I knew the answer because they are annoying on my A7R4 as well!

    This gem of a podcast is destined to become a future Master Class. Matt is truly one of the best P/P printers in the world and Taylor Mahoney is equally, an incredible silver gelatin printer. I highly recommend anyone interested in these historical processes to look them up in Flagstaff and take advantage of their impeccable skills.
