God bless you! Hannah Arendt would be proud. My Reedley College film class was my Favorite college class Ever! Thanks Professor Paul!
Everyone forgets Son Of Kong
I love this movie more than any remake
This documentary was clearly done by some neophyte Junior College person, who did not do much research.
Wow! What a great video....I love classic cinema... I can tell you put a lot of effort into this...great job!
People must have been awe struck job dropped seeing this movie at that time
Tremendous masterpiece...amazing side effects..far ahead of its time
Someone on here sped up the effects on this to 120fps. It makes it even better!!!! They need to re-relase this in HD at 120fps
When I was a boy in the 1970's many of these old films were shown on television. They were great and gave you a window into early American film. It's a travesty that they don't air anymore for whatever reason. They are IMPORTANT for giving the younger generation PERSPECTIVE on history in a very subtle and passive way. I suspect it's one of the reasons so many kids today are clueless about life in general.
Learn how to pronounce your "T's"......please
My first King Kong Aurora glow-in-the-dark I had a bendable one I had this King Kong son of Kong an LP for kids that the voice actor who was in an Andy Griffith episode that goes with a cow wearing shoes the actor who plays The Specialist
It wasn't the morality of showcasing animals (that's a load of modern crap), it was the danger!
I do think they might have only considered the fact Kong was dangerous, but all of the careful consideration in Kong’s animation and his actions give him so much life and heart! Lots can agree! I think old cinema is so important in the way it ages as well. Today, we view things so much more differently because of certain changes in society. That’s the beauty of it all. It creates an ongoing discussion and unveils certain truths that we may not have ever considered as much back in 1933! :)
The fur rustle looks like wind.
I absolutely loved this deep dive into practical effects. I'm gonna see if you got one on "the fly"
Fantastic video; thanks for posting. Instant sub! Great narration, by the way... ;)
Very nice job. I’m a animator editor here in Hollywood, and even hit to meet Ray Harryhausen here a few times before he passed away.
Thanks for watching my video! Cool to hear that you are an animator ! Are there any works of yours that I can explore?
12:16 “a pah-unt?”
Many enjoy picking out the way I say things, but good thing this was just a school project and I’m not pursuing narration as a career path. I’m from Jersey…maybe it’s the way we say things..nobody I know personally questions it!
Thank you for putting this project out for the public - King Kong is one of my all-time favorite films and it was very interesting to see how it was made
What a legendary film! A true classic!
That was really clever
You know what back then in the 1980’s in 1986 The Filmmakers should make a sequel of The Goonies called The Goonies 2 with some Stop Motion Animation Giant Gorilla 🦍 and Dinosaurs 🦖 like Willis O’Brien and Ray Harryhausen!
WW2 started in 1939
Great storytelling love your commentary! Bravo!
What I really appreciate about this movie no matter how often I've seen it, is its tight pacing. There isn't one superfluous word of dialogue or wasted frame of film in its total 100-minute running time. We get basically the whole story explained in the first 20 minutes after which it picks up speed and doesn't let up all the way to the final fadeout. A brilliant example of narrative and editing without an ounce of padding -- everything we see and hear is absolutely relevant to the story.
Amazing! Strong, confident director! Strong work! 💪
Thank you much!! Your comment means the world
You lost me at wire figure
Sorry if it sounds like i'm nitpicking, but did you really have to imply the "Capitalism bad!!1!!" cliché at the very end? I'm pretty sure without Capitalism, you wouldn't have a computer to make this video, or a house to live in, or movies on home media or streaming, or even a job if you have one
That is quite a strong implication you’ve made there - I said “It symbolized capital civilization today…” while referring to the empire state building. Apology accepted, then. 😅
@@katiekeenanfilm oh... sorry, kinda got carried away there, big misunderstanding
Nicely done documentary , this movie is also a masterpiece of writing and pacing. What really sells Kong and makes everything else work is the acting. Ann's terror in the reveal scene the trembling fear as he approaches then the pure physicality of her attempt to escape (I'd be surprised if Fay Wray didn't bruise her own wrists pulling so hard) made the audience believe in Kong immediately and that as much as the technical expertise is what made it work
Great job Katie! Yes there were a few errors but the pros outweighed the cons in your presentation - and that's coming from a guy who has seen King Kong and the Production 601 documentary numerous times!
“An 18 inch wire figure…” As the video shows quite clearly a machined steel ball and socket armature. You lost me 18 seconds in.
Oopsies! Haha, I wish I could change it within RUclips!
great work Katie Keenan, greetings from Australia.
Loved the docu-short but I would be very careful with this statement at 12:48. CGI is not easy, nor is it any less ingenious or less creative than what Willis O'Brien and Roy Harryhausen were doing nearly a century ago. This was an unfair and honestly misinformed jab. I would checkout the recent video essay "no cgi is really just invisible cgi".
Some time after releasing this documentary, I wholeheartedly agree! After all, they were just using the best form of technology that they had back then! And same with nowadays! I will most definitely check out that video, thanks for the recommendation!
I don’t know what this movie wasn’t a pioneer in, from the filming to the models and especially the soundtrack and it’s use in the film.
Nicely done despite some factual errors (WW2?!) A for effort! Best regards and hope you go far in all your work efforts.
One thing critics miss was how incredibly rapid-paced the movie was. After the slow beginning, once Kong is shown, all the action on Skull Island and NYC takes place basically just over an hour. Nothing like this occurred until the second Indian Jones movie.
Which would explain why I love both movies so much! (Temple of Doom is my favorite Indiana Jones movie and one of my favorite movies of all time.)
Really great, well made video. King Kong really is such a great film, even now. The technical mastery on display in it is incredible, not to mention the great story and writing.
🎥 🦍
Without this hard work we now wont be able to see a Giant gorilla fighting a Guy in suit breathing atomic breath
I knew a bunch of the effects but WOW you went into so many different techniques that I had no idea about. This movie is one of my very favorites - I much prefer "real things" over CGI.
It's one thing to do these techniques well but to do them well and first is fifth level brilliance
I think it was a wonderful presentation. 😊
fantastic discussion!
What if Godzilla 1933 and King Kong 1954 exist!
You mixed up the years lol
This movie looks like shit. Why didn't they just use CGI?
Can we stop calling video essays that use literally zero original footage or interviews documentaries lol
great documentarie Katie, thanks!
Well done . This is one of my all-time favorites. I’ve watched it hundreds of times . A bit weird , but I don’t think so. Thanks
whats missing at the end of this clip is the line: "...oooor with other words: its just a big pile of garbage like every Hollywood movie thats been made ever since"
Ah yes, it’s all about $$$! In that case, what are your thoughts on the new Kong vs Godzilla movies?
Thank you for sharing! The film was made with heart and we all can see that even today. This is proof that technology is a wonderful tool when it's used along with the heart.
My all time favorite film...Great job on the documentary Katie!
This is awesome! Great job!
