Hi, I'm Chris.
In this channel, I want to show you how anyone can squeeze a bit more travel and adventure in to their lives; whether that be a a day-trip to your local town, or an epic journey across a continent.
Being in the British Army gave me the confidence to explore new places and to be comfortable in difficult situations. It also delivered some amazing experiences. But anybody can learn the skills to become an adventurer or traveller. I will share my journey with you. I will be honest about my struggles and hopefully give you some ideas for your own pursuit of happiness.
I bought a second-hand Land Rover Discovery 4, which will accompany me on many of my adventures. I plan to gradually modify the Land Rover one mini-adventure at a time until it becomes the ultimate over-lander. You can also follow the Discovery's progress in my videos.

Installing a Leisure Battery and Inverter into my LR Discovery 4
In this video I fit a leisure battery, inverter, solar charge controller and battery charger to my Land Rover Discovery. The items I purchased for this project are listed below. I managed to fit the leisure battery in the space around the rear passenger wheel arch, but if you have the rear air con unit fitted in your Discovery/LR4, then you won't have space there to fit it. I am doing separate videos for the light bars, solar panel and dash cam, but the whole project was done at the same time.
I purchased quite a lot of the battery items and accessories from Bimble Solar (in the UK). The garage, said that these items were quite big for a 4X4 and were usually seen in vans or boats. I'm not ...

Terrafirma Spare Wheel Carrier & Hollywood 1 Bike Rack on Land Rover Discovery 4

In this video, I find a bike rack for my Land Rover Discovery 4. This isn't so straightforward because of the split tailgate. I also fit a spare wheel carrier to the back. I want to be able to leave the bike rack on all the time, so it was important to find one that was practical and looks good. The combination of the Terrafirma Spare Wheel Carrier and the Hollywood 1 Bike Rack seems to work re...

After fitting the roof rack to my Discovery 4, I wanted to take it on a mini-adventure in the Peak District, to give the car a shake out and see how it performs on a short camping trip. I took my Exped tent with me and I compared camping in the tent vs camping in the back of the Land Rover. Front Runner Roof Rack and Ladder on Land Rover Discovery 4

I fit the Front Runner Roof Rack and Ladder to my Land Rover Discovery 4. But it wasn't easy! There were several issues that took hours to resolve. Despite researching lots of different roof racks for Land Rovers, I didn't come across any videos that warned me of the problems fitting the Front Runner. But now that I have overcome these issues, I love it. So if you are thinking of getting this r...
I'm about to undergo this same setup and I had a couple of questions - 1 - What type of grommet are you using for your roof pass-through point? 2 - What's the grommet below the battery for the cable run up to the main battery? TY!
I’d have put a vent or a cooling fan for the inverter
❤
I recently installed one on my LR4- it’s great and very attractive! I got enough bolts, nuts and washers to install four in the tire plate, your kit was short. I installed mine to fit my new spare 275 75R 18 on Terra Firm 18 steel wheels with Proud Rhino lift rods for a 2 1/2 inch lift
Nice Vid. Great work! how mutch did u spend? when is ok to ask, maybe i will do this upgrade to. :)
Nice work. I am wondering - which point you choose for earth/ground for CTek controler and battery? Thanks!
Can’t complain about fuel efficiency when owning a disco. Regarding wind noise. It’s not noticeable as long as you get the faring
What happened to the channel, no more videos?
fantastic- I have wanted to do this but did not have a guide!
This is exactly like I would like in my car. Nice work! What route did you take to connect the main battery with this Leisure battery? Is the car still waterproof?
Great work! Just a word of caution, you taped your wiring to the rear curtain airbag. Maybe not a good place. Rather tape/secure to something else (drill a hole for a cable tie body clip). Your passengers may benefit from that airbag working in future.
Hi. Thanks for that. I thought that was just the canister for the airbag rather than the airbag itself, but I'll definitely get someone to check it is still safe. I appreciate the heads up and sorry for the delayed reply.
You vanished I noticed no more new viedos I'm sure you're just busy my lr3 on hold for now I plan to continue my build soon
Sorry for the long delay. I had some difficult family stuff going on, so I had to take some time to focus on that. I appreciate you reaching out. Hopefully I can upload some more very soon
You made a nice set of videos with your Disco and would be good to see you come back with some more in the future
Hey. Thanks for the positive message. And sorry for being off the channel for a while. I had a difficult few months that required me to take some time out for my family, but I hope to get back to putting out some more content soon.
Hi there, seems to be one good option. What do you think, would it work on a damaged flat tire? Imagine, you go overlanding and need to change your damaged tire, does the bike rack still work? Greets from Germany, cool car😊
Hi Chris, so do you mean that that the bolts that come with the rack are not high tensile? Is that why they snapped ? . Great job tho, many thanks for sharing. David
Hi. sorry for the super delayed response. Yes, that is what I mean. I'm sure a good mechanic, or just someone more competent than me would get away with these bolts, but that is why I think I struggled.
Amazing job buddy. Respect
Sorry for the huge delay. Had to take some time out for personal reasons, but I appreciate the comment and I'll be back to more projects very soon. Thank you for the compliment. :)
I have a 1up 2in bike hitch means you can add more bike hitch as needed , if I had tire bike hitch I remove front tire and seat why tire it sticks out from vehicle and remove seat so none steals it , I own a super 73rx bike I love this bike I added a second battery now my range with paddle assist I can get 100 mile range I also own a much more aggressive bike for offload Rambo rebel 1000 Watts xstreme performance e fat tire bike top speed 30 mph range 28 without paddle assist 48 with paddle assist has 11 gears many hunters buy this and add a cart to bring back their deer or game . but I'm no hunter. For me I love bikes I also own a veteran Sherman unicycle I am learning on can get seriously hurt on must wear lots of protection gear , I own some go pros camera I should start a you tube channel but my job consumes a lot of my time anyway nice power set up and music
Yeah, my job takes up way too much of my time too, which is why there are huge gaps between my videos. But sounds like you have some good kit and you're passionate so I think you'd make a good channel. Thanks for the complement 😊
Great mod! May I know the wiring diagram? I couldn't figure out why you need both CTEK Battery Charger and Victron Charge Controller?
Thanks for the comment. Unfortunately I don't have a wiring diagram because I left that to the auto electricians. Bimble Solar in the UK sold me the kit so they might be able to supply you with a wiring diagram or a better explanation. But as I understand it, the battery charger is there to keep both the leisure battery and the main car battery charged. I think the leisure battery tops up first and then excess is sent to the main battery if required. The solar charge controller is ensuring the correct current/voltage (?) is being sent from the solar panel to the batteries. To be honest, I didn't question it beyond that 🤷🏼♂️
@@inhistracks I agree that you should have dedicated solar charge to get more power from the solar. And this may be better than the CTEK D250SE one (?) maybe
@@tuanla1879 I assume it depends what battery and what solar set up you have. I intentionally bought the whole system in one go so the suppliers could make sure it was all compatible and optimal. But I trusted their judgement and don't know enough about the electrical accessories to comment on their effectiveness. You'll likely know more about this than me.
@@inhistracks Thanks for your reply. I don't know much but I'm just curious and I wanted to setup my own thingy so that I know more or less the strength and weakness of it. And if something goes wrong in the middle of nowhere then I will have an idea how to patch it up :D
@@tuanla1879 Very wise strategy. I'll do a bit more reading myself.
Fascinating video Chris. I really like the animations you insert in the vid. How has it performed since installing? Have you ever thought about starting a business doing something like this?
Hi Danny. Thanks. That's very kind of you to say. I barely trust myself to do it. I doubt someone else would let me start hacking at their car! 😂 But if I could turn travel and adventures into a business, I'd be tempted.
I fitted this a while back and found the ‘vibrating’ wind noise pretty crazy. I tried wrapping bungle cable at the front to break up the air (a bit better) and also lengthwise over and under to reduce vibration. That was ok too but vibration noise at about 50+ mph was crazy. In the end I bought their wind deflector, which wasn’t cheap and didn’t look as good in my opinion. It got rid of the noise issue though 🤷🏻♂️
Hi Charlie. Yes the noise was very noticeable without the deflector. I just used the one that was supplied with the roof rack, which seemed to do a good job, but now I've fitted a light bar, I had to remove the wind deflector and I have wind noise coming from the light bar and the roof rack. I think I've overcome that with a simple custom built deflector, but above 70mph, it starts to get noisy. I'm going to dedicate a video to wind noise on the light bar. I too tried the bungee chord trick. Didn't have much luck either
@@inhistracks that would be great. I couldn’t find any videos out there dealing with this issue when I fitted mine. I also found the ladder fitting above the number plate a pain like you did! Glad to hear it’s a consistent experience! 🤣
Ha. Yes, I envy those that just fit something with no dramas. That's never me! But it's great to get feedback like this and know there's a community of us all struggling with sheered bolts and wind noise 😆
Nice one. I’ve been fiddling around with mine but not to such a degree. Yet… One thIng, behind that panel you had to refit having taken off the fins trying to get the cabling to work, what’s the metal cylinder that you attached the cabling too? Is it part of the rear airbag, or interfere with it in some way? I know that may not matter depending who travels in there etc, but just asking as we have kids who sit back there. Cheers
Hi Charlie. I think it's the airbag gas canister, or something to that effect. It's not the airbag itself. They are mostly in the headlining of the car and are quite obvious. Although the amount of cables I have run along the headlining, I did wonder how much it might have effected the airbags, but I did my best to keep them out the way.
Now I'm about yo step up my lr3 with some upgrades not made for the lr3 I just bought a defender side ladder and side storage box to go on passenger side I saw that a few people done this I also have front runner rack I will have to move to the side and I will need to drill 2 holes on each side and in stall insert nut and I hate to do it and 2 holes on both side of the quarter panel with insert nuts but once done it look really cool and different from all the other lr3/lr4 if I had a you tube channel it be great content I also bought a set of Molle panels for third row windows on inside to help in hiding the mounted ladder and storage box I'm still up in the air if I ever buy a roof top tent because of all the room you have to sleep in lr3 when all the seat are down , but if I do I like to get a ikamper hard shell but only tell will tell my final build upgrades and I thought of pulling a small tear drop trailer also .....
Well if you do set up your own RUclips channel, let me know. I'd like to see your work. All it takes is a Go Pro and a small rode mic and you're away. I know what you mean about the rooftop tent. I'm sometimes tempted, but they are heavy bits of kit and that's a lot of bulk to have on the roof rack when I also use the car for daily commutes. The beauty of the LR3/4 is the space inside. So for now, I'll stick to sleeping in there. Good luck with your build!
Great video :) how much did all that end up costing compared to getting a jackaery?
Good question! And I should have really talked about price in the video because it is a big factor. The first auto electrician charged me about £850. Getting the second opinion and the additional fixes cost me another £600. If it was done right the first time, that £600 wouldn't have been necessary. The battery was approx. £250. Inverter, just under £100. Dual DC DC Charger was just under £200. Then there was the cables and sundries, which I'd say was probably another £150. Solar panel £170, solar charge controller around £90. So cost to me was around £2400, but should have really been around £1800. It's also worth noting that the auto electrician didn't just wire in the battery and solar panel. They also wired in the lights, the power output/input on the roof rack and the dash-cam.
@@inhistracks wow that was an expensive journey maybe a jackary may of been a good choice especially with its versatility?
@@mrfairycake4333 Yeah, it's a tough call either way. Some of the Jackery set ups including Solar panels are also quite expensive, but as you say; more versatile and no work required. I'm happy with it now that I've done it, and I like the fact that my car battery is also benefitting from the solar panel. I also wanted the leisure battery and solar panel to charge the dash cam (for example when the car is parked at the airport or train station for a few days). The Jackery would be slightly impractical for that, but way more practical and simple for most other things.
Where can I buy this .
I bought it from Maverick4X4.co.uk
Does anyone know or have reduce the amount of crossbars so you are not blocking the sunroof? It seems to defeat the purpose of sunroof. Unlike the Prospeed or TeraFirma, you don't have to populate all the roof with cross bars
There's nothing stopping you from putting fewer slats in when you assemble it, but I have no clue how this affects its structural integrity.
Nice video quick question how many watts is your solar panel.
Sorry for the delay. The solar panel is 110W
Little tip, if you change your 230v socket for one with neons on the switches if you leave them in the on position you will be able to see if the inverter is on.
That's a great idea! Thanks
I with you had attempted to do the installation or recorded the installation on the terrafirma carrier, I own one I just installed it but my mistakes came when installing the bumper back on lr3 because I drilled the hole where the carrier gose in that was good but the right corner is about 1/4 off I now now it was best to install bumper the drill out the hole where the carrier gose in , now I will attempt to take out carrier and try to attach the corner bumper back in place and drill a much bigger hole so the carrier go back in place and nothing instructions that say how the carrier is secured to land rover from popping out so I quess the black round metal with center hole is what is used to secured the carrier other than these complaints it was a very easy installation and you could have done the work as long as you has a few tools , but the terrafirma instructions suck in my opinion, I try to learn from the mistakes people post in their viedos like when you spoke about the front runner roof rack bolts , my lr3 still work in progress, but you could have set the tone by if you recorded the installation of the terrafirma carrier nobody has a well detailed installation of the carrier one other person but he left out many key factors for a good installation I own the Yakima EXO Swing Away Storage System w/ 2 Enclosed Cargo Carriers - 2" Hitches , has many nice accessories to build on and a dull bike carrier check it out a bit pricey Nice viedo
Hi James. Thanks for the message. Yes I would have preferred it if Avenger 4X4 were able to video the install, but they are super busy and it is a big ask to record an install as it makes the job quite a bit longer. They did take some photos and I'm sure they'd agree that the instructions could be better.
Now that you have the wheel carrier, will you keep the same Yakima or will you get a spare wheel carrier?
Hi, awesome video, can I ask what you are using for work lights, they look really good, and how did you fit them? Cheers!
Thank you. I have several types of lights on the car now. They are all Strands lights. The work lights are called Red Fox Side lights I think off the top of my head. I'm putting together the video for it as we speak. They are wired into the leisure battery so I can run them with the engine off. Not a simple job... holes in the roof etc.
Well done, i do love all your work that you have done on this vehicle :) i would put the leisure battery in the engine compartment which is near the ABS pump, there is enough room to mount all the hard ware. why do you need for 240v in this day of age, when overlanding ?
Yes, I did look in the engine bay, but to be honest, I didn't have the confidence I could fit it all in. If I had more mechanic skills, I would have probably done that. Good question about the inverter. The main reason was that I just followed the advice of Bimble Solar, who suggested the kit and set up. I do find it handy for the laptop, and even random things like the charger for my drill and other battery power tools, but you are right, most overlanding kit doesn't require it.
Just to let you know the 13A fuse will limit the current drawn from the socket to 13A. I don't know what size inverter you have but personally I'd downsize the fuse to suit, that will give extra protection for the inverter.
Hi Paul. Thank you. Milly suggested the same thing, so I am going to ask Bimble Solar exactly what the fuse should be rated to and get that changed ASAP. Appreciate the advice.
So I checked with Bimble Solar and they suggested a 3A fuse would be more appropriate. It's a 230V with a peak output of 700W, so a 3A should just about do it. If not, I'll use a 5A. Thanks again for the advice
Change the 13A fuse to a 3A one. Your inverter doesn't have the power to blow a 13A fuse so it won't provide any protection. A 3A one is good for about 750 Watts so even that is slightly overrated, a 1A fuse would be better (they are available for UK plugs) if you will be using less than about 250 W but does slightly limit what you can draw. The inverter does have overload protection but better to correctly rate the fuse than rely on the overload protection.
This is great advice, thank you. I'll put it to Bimble Solar (who sold me the kit) and let you know what they say. Thanks again
Hi Milly. Bimble Solar agreed that a 3A fuse should work well. So thanks for that. I'll be changing that ASAP. Great advice!!
@@inhistracks Thanks for the follow-up
Cracking job 👍 I'm just about embark on something similar for my daughter for her grand tour when she finishes her A Levels next summer. She wants a D3 converted into a camper so I'm trawling for ideas. I like your set up and with a Jackery she should have no issues with power. Looking forward to you light review. Great effort.
The grand tour sounds amazing. I bet that will be an experience she will remember for life.
Nice!

Just found your channel and love it. It’s nice to find a normal chap like myself who loves a disco 4 and doesn’t do adverts or sponcered videos. Keep up great work mate. I’m off to advenger 4x4 to get some work done as didn’t realise they was on my door step 🎉👍
Glad you like the videos. The Avenger 4X4 guys are a good bunch. Tell them I said hi.
I have the 3/4 Front Runner rack with no noticeable wind noise. They are a great sturdy rack. Good choice.
Thank you. Yes I do love the look and quality of these racks... and most importantly, all the accessories that are designed to work with it. The full rack did make a bit of noise, but the wind fairing helped a lot. The problem is, my new light bars meant I had to take that wind fairing off, so I had a special one made. I'll have a video for that hopefully uploaded soon.
Nice job. Good thing you don't have the rear air conditioning option or that space would have been full or at least most of it used up. I just subscribed to see more of your work. BTW I don't use my third row of seats so I just built a false floor and put the fridge, second battery and rear drawer on the false floor. Only issue with running wires under the car is they may need to be removed for any body off repairs but lets hope you don't have any of those.
Yes that's exactly what the garage told me (about the air con unit). A lot of people seem to go the way you have, and it makes a lot of sense. I guess I just haven't fully committed yet to making it a pure overlander. I haven't used my third row yet either.
Nice job bud.. I've been thinking about how to fit a leisure battery to my D4, I'm happy to know it can fit a decent size battery in that space 👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you. Just check you don't have air con in the rear cabin otherwise this will likely be using up that space.
Looks like you've done a tidy job mate. 👍 With everything packed into a small space so tightly, let us know if you have any issues with heat transfer or overheating of any components as there doesn't seem to be a great deal of ventilation in that compartment.
Thank you. Yes I will do. One of the mechanics at Avenger 4X4 used to modify Land Rovers for big expeditions. He worked on my car and saw the final set up. He wasn't concerned. But I'll keep my eye on it and comment if anything happens.
Looks awesome man!
Thank you. I need to do an update video on it soon because I'm starting to notice rust spots on the gas piston and it's a lot stiffer than when I first fit it.
I went BajaRack. Don't have to remove anything and their accessories are awesome
Thanks for the recommendation. I'll check them out. How does it attach to the roof if you're not using those same mounting nuts?
Any more camping videos in the disco? I’m thinking of getting one. Go travelling around the uk. Maybe the nc500 coast run. Just gona be me and my dog :)
Yes, I have some raw footage of a couple of recent trips, but I spent so long doing the last set of modifications and editing the videos, that I've not managed to release any of my other camping trips yet. I'll try to get these published ASAP. I'm sure you'll have a great time camping in the Disco. If there's two of you, it will be cosy, but for one, it's great. Two things I really wish I had on my car for camping, but don't yet... an awning and detachable curtains.
@@inhistracks I’ll be getting an awning. Here take a look at Mari in her defender. She’s got a great setup 👍🏻 ruclips.net/video/MAaYoHxlsxk/видео.html
@@Doguelife Yeah, she has some cool accessories. I like the heater and even the LED lights inside the back of the cab make it look more homely. She is brave showing the awning breaking too. We all learn better when people are honest in these videos and don't just show the good bits.
Hiya, love your videos! I just got a '12 Disco 4 myself, and been looking at doing some small mods for easier road travelling. Keep it up!
Hey. Thanks for the kind words. I'm sure you'll love the Disco. It's not always easy to live with, but I wouldn't change it for anything. I'm about to drop a few more videos with some mods I made. Mostly electrical stuff like leisure battery, solar panel, light bars and work lights, dash cam etc. Nothing to make it better off road yet. That might be next year's project.
My ladder rusted like crazy
That sucks. Did Front Runner replace it? Mine is still looking good, so maybe yours wasn't coated properly? I hope they get it sorted for you. What has start to rust is the piston hinge on my spare wheel carrier!
@@inhistracks in fairness it was on when I bought the car... not sure how old. I treated it with rust reverser and repainted it. Seems like it started under the no slip coating(not sure if that was original)
@@kristoffersmith8289 The ladder is a bit of a pain to take on and off, but if you can be bothered, it would probably be worth getting it powder coated. Depends what condition the screws are in that hold the light casing above the number plate (featured at 07:20 in my video). Mine were totally shot so I had to replace them with Christmas tree fixings, which is not ideal. I won't be removing my ladder anytime soon for that reason. Having said that, if those three screws come out nicely, it should be quite a quick job.
If the ladder came with the car it could be the LE ladder? Which is known to rust
Is there a way to leave that original rack on and just drill the holes threw those spots
Hey, sorry for the delayed reply. I don't think it would look good if you did that, and not sure how you would drill in to the original rack so that you had a strong enough fixing. The new side brackets do look good when they are properly fitted, so I wouldn't recommend cutting any corners.

Just fit it out with Strand lightbars and work-lights, which I'm quite happy with. I agree, the Front Runner gear is fantastic. The only thing I think people should be aware of when fitting roof racks and lights, is that the wind noise becomes more of an issue. When it was just the roof rack, it wasn't too bad, but now with the lights too, it gets quite noisy above 70mph.
That why I chose 4 hella lights over light bar , I also bought Johnson rods , 3inch for front 2.5 inch rods for rear because of my 275x75x18 tires to get a lift that won't rub in front , I also bought a terrafirma swing away spare tire carrier , and rock slider note if you buy a terrafirma rock sliders easy to install with factory mounting point when door open but the mounting points where plastic molding hiding holes will need run a tap in and well penetrating oil and don't use bolt in kit for bottom it has a hex head can trip I replaced with stainless steel that takes a socket head no chance of stripping and use some anti seize cream on bottom bolts but the hex bolts for sides is ok is shows when doors open , I also bought a Arb bull bumper but I like the EOM factory look , I bought my land rover lr3 she on copart auto auction for 1100.00 us because of mechanical issues clean title ,not running . but I got it running , drives , had some small problems I've fit them all less 1000.00 dollars , but bought about 5000.00 in upgrades parts that includes front runner roof rack , having bought suv for cash no car note makes it easy to buy upgrades I think all in including rover ,parts , upgrades 10,000.00 I live in Texas in looking forward to Colorado trails , back country and black bear pass ......

Hey Francis. So sorry for the delayed reply. I've been away a lot this month. The total length of the bolt appears to be 25mm, but the length of the threaded part is 20mm. I'm probably too late now, but the hardware store told me that the 10.9s might be a safer bet as they are less brittle than the 12.9s. @@fverrue Great. I'm glad it worked out in the end. If it leaks (which it sounds like it won't), you'll probably notice the carpet in the front footwell gets wet - on whatever side the bolt is on. This is what I experienced at least. If you have any trails you'd recommend, please let me know.
@@inhistracks No wet feet until now at least. This afternoon though, I got smoke from the engine bay, I noticed the FBH was leaking on its proper exhaust system. had to dial it out with my iid tool on the parking lot of the nearby supermarket. concerning trails, I'd say it depends on where you are, although we went to Wales last summer to take on the well known lanes, strata Florida, bastard lane etc, otherwise here in Belgium we need to get to the Ardennes to get some proper offroad lanes, next up is Beely Parc in France, just north of Paris.
@@fverrue I assumed you were in the UK because you mentioned Oxford 4X4. Thanks for the recommendations! I'm keen to get across to mainland Europe for some adventures soon. I hope your ordeal in the car park was resolved.
Thnak you for the movie, you have just confirmed me in my belief that it is necessary to have the installation in the service. ;)
Ha. Yes that definitely is the safer option! I hope it goes well.
@@inhistracks exactly and of course the screws have snapped, just as you mentioned and warned!
@@chojny23 Did you get it installed, or did you do it yourself?
@@inhistracks Thanks to your material, I had it done by professionals.... Unfortunately, I do not have the necessary skills.
Nice overview. Something to think about 👍
Hey, thanks for the comment. Do you have a Discovery?
