Welcome to Pete’s Ghias; a channel dedicated to the restoration, service, and celebration of all things Karmann Ghia. I’m going to feature the mechanical, paint, and interior restoration of my '65 Ghia, tips and procedures, and in the future going to car shows, meeting other Ghia owners and highlighting their cars too. Full disclosure, I’m not a trained mechanic and I don’t claim to be an expert, I’m just a hobbyist and enthusiast with a RUclips account. Any mistakes I make I leave in my videos so you can learn from them. But I have learned a few things along the way that are worth sharing with you, the person with average skills and tools who wants to get into the hobby too. So thanks for watching and for keeping air cooled Volkswagens alive. Please don’t forget to like and subscribe!
Type 34 Karmann Ghia Project Part 1
@PetesGhias takes a first look at a 1963 Type 34 Karmann Ghia Project. Yes, it's rough. Yes, it's rusty. But it's one of only 2,000 left in the world and worth big bucks once restored. If you don't watch the video, it's going to the car crusher!

The type 34, is the best looking vintage air-cooled car. Just my opinion.
It certainly is unique
Your replacement turn signal switch is for Type 3, not Type 34. 👍
Yeah, it came with a type 3 column... so the switch isn't the same? That's a bummer!
Yeah T34 is wider. If you compare the actual turn signal switch on your T34 now, vs the replacement, you’ll see the difference. There’s still value in the T3 switch if you sell it. Also, take note of the manufacturer on the housing as they are not interchangeable. There’s two manufacturers, SWF and Koln. You can probably repair your snapped T34 switch in the meantime while you search for a replacement.
Ha, I replied with my personal account I guess. Oh well!
@@michaelrunyon160 Okay, thank you for the tip. On my Type 14, the turn signal switch repair was pretty straight forward. I'm surde there's someone in Europe selling a used switch or stalk. I still have a lot to learn about the Type 34 vs the Type 14 Ghia.
@ oopsie... Pete's Ghias is my alter ego, don't want stalkers stealing my ride!
Love it. Let us know when you get ready to start fixing it up. We have lots of window rubber and other bits you're going to need.
Yes, I've been looking at your site... I think I'm going to need one of everything!
Let me know how I can help.
Thanks, Lee. I appreciate it! Going to put together a parts list and see what I'm missing. I'm already in the registry and the Facebook group.

Looking forward to the hinge video. Thank you !
thanks, hope to have that video done soon!
I don't care what you say about you, that was truly brilliant.
I have a 72 super beetle that I took apart the rear suspension apart a couple years ago! There are a couple differences but your video gives me plenty of info the get it back together now! Thx!
Cool, good luck. Check your shop manual because the angle on the spring plate could be different.
@ I scratched a mark on the backing plate to reference the new plate when I removed the old one so I should be ok!
The 80 ft/lb torque is for the spring plate to swing arm bolts
@ 1:24 is that a custom jack stand receiver welded to the torsion tube? … these were designed as mufflers for the heat system to quiet engine noise piping through to the cabin, some VWs had a semi-flexible metal pipe with some kind of insulator shroud on the outside, and later Porsche used a flexible fabric tube, red and in color. Love seeing these rides kept stock.
Hey, thanks for the comment. I think I've seen some heater tubes like that. Maybe on a bus? Can't recall! Maybe on the last wrecked car I helped a friend chop up. The jack stand has a not-so-fancy cover on it from Harbor Freight to keep from scratching my pan. I wouldn't care on any other car I've owned but this pan is powder-coated.
Thanks for posting this. I shared it to my channel.

Unbelievable! What an outstanding Teaser & Intro. Love the theme song, too. Viva John Whorfin
Thank you for this video! I have been struggling getting the window regulator, guide rail, and glass out of the door. Seeing how it goes together made it straightforward to take everything apart.
@@lonverstuyft2691 you’re welcome! I should probably make a video where I take a Ghia apart and bag and tag it. Much easier to part them out than restore!
Well done with no talking head fluff.
Thank you, in real life my job is making TV… just with a slightly higher budget.
Great job, very thorough, looks like some great stuff, it was great you could trace the old panels, very useful, I’m working on a’74 someone took apart years ago, your right about the money part Ghia stuff gets expensive.
Yeah, the parts for a Ghia get pretty ugly. That's why I don't trust "restored" Ghias going for $20,000. There's no way you can properly restore a Ghia for that amount of money and make a profit. Makes no sense! There are some unique parts on a 73/74 Ghia but the IRS cars with a 1600 motor are probably the best driving Ghias ever made.
Great video. I am rebuilding my 1956 bug beam assembly and this answers almost all my questions
Glad I could help!
Who rebuilt your spindles?
Call Stuart at Kustom1Warehouse.net and he will hook you up. It's a return exchange for your old parts.

Do you have a source for torque values for all the beam/suspension hardware?

That kink in the fuel that u mention at the end,..causes me a great deal headache. My ghia would run, for 10 seconds and quit. I pulled the carb , etc etc did all sorts of work,…finally, my buddy said, check the fuel line,..and voila, ! Un twisted the line, and oriented it differently, and issue solved! I was simply getting fuel starvation ugh!!
Hey, that's a good friend! With these old cars it could be literally anything mechanical, plus the last guys mistakes, plus the ravages of being 50 plus years old.
Thanks for sharing your process. The rear on my ‘68 Karmann Ghia was sagging just a bit. I replaced the bushings and re-indexed the torsion bars. Your last tag line made me smile.😊
Awesome, I'm glad it worked out! Thanks for watching

Thanks, hope to see you back for more videos!
Great detail as always, Showing where the bolts go as you described them was awesome. Didn't think about thread taps but I'll be getting a set.
Thanks! I tapped the threads but it would actually be better to chase them instead. A chase tool actually cuts a little less and is meant for cleaning out the threads instead of cutting new. A tap works of course you just have to go easy with it, don't thread all the way and you'll be fine.
So helpful to know the "right way" to do this. Most just go to town!
Well, you can do that too but I figure the engineers in Germany were smarter than me!
I have a 72 ghia. Im having trouble attaching the door handle on the inside on door panel. I cant attach firmly, to the metal backing, without pulling doorpanel off..
@@tomasalvarez6040 you’re talking about the arm rest? There’s a bracket on the other side of the door panel that clips onto the window rail. If you mean the inner door latch it screws into the metal part of the door.
@ xactly,..the arm rest. The backing plate to which it screws onto, has to slip on a metal piece of the door frame…and its hard to donthis with the doorpanel in place
@@tomasalvarez6040 Okay, get some plastic trim tools and you can easily pry the door panel off without scratching the paint. You should first take the window winder off and the trim around the inner latch. As long as you don't move the door panel clips it should just snap back into place. Once your door panel is off is a good time to check the condition of the inner moisture barrier and clean junk and dirt out from inside the door.
I was at that show.
Great show, I like to go every year. My next car show video will be Flanders, NJ when I get around to editing that is.

Thank you, I appreciate it! My channel is small but growing. Churning out a video a week as I finish my Ghia.
This was the first repair i ever did on my first VW! The torsion plate on my 67 was rusted out and both bushings were disinigrated ! Great demo
LOL, how did it drive? Must have been a rust belt car. I've never heard of the spring plate rusting out and I'm in the Northeast!
@ well eventually the whole pan rusted thru! My brake and clutch assembly were held up with a piece of plywood😳 but hell i was 16 my first car and it cost only $100 😏 i have had 4 bugs, 1 ghia 2 buses a 70 square back, & a 69 fast back
@@JamesStamm-y6e I had to buy four Ghias just to find one worth restoring and gather parts. My first car was a 68 Bug with no floors. Good times!
Great overview with some humor added. I'm just starting on my 71 KG coupe.

Thank you for this very informative video. I appreciate that you didn't play music all the time. I do not like the videos where they play music and don't talk.
@@RandyRegier-p9r Thanks, yes the videos are meant to be instructive tutorials. Wall to wall blaring music wouldn’t work for that. But my restoration playlist has videos with more music and montages but those are cut to be entertainment; the joy and pain of this disease called Karmann Ghia obsession!
Kari was doing these years ago
But did he ever make a video?! 🧐
@PetesGhias yeap many years ago
Would this method work on a RIS setup ?
Same idea although the spring plate covers are shaped differently and the spring plate itself is shorter. Some are double plates and some are solid. Also the angle at which they are set is different from a swing axle. The rubber bushings are also different. I would check a shop manual before you begin. But yes, the same theory applies to both as far as adjusting the splines on the torsion bars.
@PetesGhias thank you so much for your response ! I've been trying to put my car back together for the last few months. I took it completely apart 20 years ago. Shortly after doing so I took an 80 foot header off a Rockledge and was found a few days later. Long story short, it's been a long recovery and now I'm working on the old girl again. What I need to know is will that tool (turnbuckle)that you improvised work on the shorter spring plates of an RIS ? The rest I think I have figured out . I think 🤔 !! Thank you once again. That crack in the head I took did a number on me ! So thanks for your patience .
@@PatrickSeanEarl Glad to hear you're on the mend. I would buy a short and long turnbuckle and see which one works for you. Of course you always have the option of buying the real tool: www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-e&q=vw+spring+plate+tool The important thing is getting the angle right. If you don't want to buy the angle tool you can get an app for your phone.

I will post an update as soon as I can. The videos are trickling out once a week but the body isn't fully painted yet or on the road. I hope to have the car done by Spring of 2025 and will post a follow-up on the steering and alignment. Thanks for watching!
Very well done. Clear, concise and you certainly made it look easy, and a lot less intimidating. I would be curious to know how the steering box and wheel alignment turned out.
When I hooked up my steering column I lucked out and the angle was perfect. I didn't have to do much adjustment and just torqued the steering box down. I may have skipped that step in my steering column video. But rotating it into place isn't hard as long as the bolts are loose.
Very well done. Clear and concise, and very much appreciated. For me, the front end is the only area of a VW that i do not have much experience with. You certainly made it look easy and a lot less intimidating. I would be curious to know how the steering box turned out, and if the alignment was as close as you were hoping to at least make it driveable.
Dude, you da man! This really helped me replace my bung hole plugs! 🤣 Seriously, thanks!
Thank you! Perhaps you need more fiber in your diet?!
@@PetesGhias ...probably wouldnt hurt! 😂 Is there any other part within the door that would keep the glass from rattling in the down position?
@@lcwatts2971 If all your plugs are in place and there's still a rattle I would pull the door panel off and tighten everything down. Look for loose parts. Check your window scraper too. Also, if the window can pivot on the guide rail the parts could be worn out. Easiest solution is to turn up the radio!
@@PetesGhias Gracias, senor!

awesome, good luck!

Great video on this subject, will be of great use to us all.👌
Awesome, that’s the goal, to make this channel the go to for Ghia DIY procedures.
Thanks for posting this up, calm, succinct and tidy - my '71's driver's door is feeling it's age and needs refurbishment - but having seen this I will wait for your next video on alignment++ before deciding to tackle it myself or having a more worthwhile discussion with a 3rd party - tvm again.
You're welcome! Alignment depends on many factors. If body work was done or heater channels replaced, is the body and door opening in a factory position? Are the hinges sagging? Does the gap need to be taken up by adjusting the body to pan rubber wedges? There are also plates behind the A-Pillar that slide up and down and in and out to adjust the position of the hinges. It's definitely a two-person job to avoid scratching the paint or dropping the door.
Great video! Love the detail and explanation, it's exactly at the right level. Videos like this will be invaluable to me as I restore my 68 next year. Thanks for the effort and quality!
Thank you for the encouragement! When you solo produce a video AND work on a car everything takes twice as long... not to mention the time to edit. Comments like this keep me going!
Hi.What length turnbubkle did you use. Thanks
Sorry, I overlooked that detail in the video. Collapsed it's about 12 inches and extends to 16 inches. The thread is 3/8in. Make sure it's a heavy duty turnbuckle. I think I used this one: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07F6WQC7C/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1
How long did it take you to get to this point and how long should it take a shop to fully restore mine what could I be looking at pricewise?
My particular Ghia didn't need any welding or panel replacement but it had tons of dings, dents and creases. So all the hours that went into it were to pick out the dents, apply body filler, and sand. Your Ghia might have rust and and need welding so it's really hard to say because you might be comparing two different things. Pan off restoration or Pan on? Is it an original car or were shoddy repairs done in the past hidden under a half inch of bondo? What's the coast of replacement metal? The answer no one wants to hear is you don't know until you take it apart and remove all the paint by sanding or media blasting. Then you have to decide; do I move forward and do a quality restoration, do I bondo it up, or do I walk away? I would look at the shop rate and multiply it by about 200 hours of work and add paint and clear coat (which have gone way up because of inflation).
Also, thanks for watching! Time wise it was about a year but I shelved the project for a while to save up money and I was busy restoring the pan.
