I'm Howard Heyman, and I create detailed and lengthy videogame reviews or whatever I feel like posting... sometimes.
The Best Anime That You Never Saw | Gungrave Anime Review
Introducing one of the best pieces of media that you never saw, which also happens to be adapted from a videogame. In this video, I present a thesis on why 2003's Gungrave is not only one of the best anime shows ever made, but also why it succeeds so well at adapting and transforming its source material in a way that makes it triumph over every other attempt at adapting a videogame.

An Ode to Tsukihime | A Visual Novel Retrospective
Просмотров 6 тыс.3 года назад
Tsukihime was released 20 years ago. Since then, its been recognized as a ground-breaking and highly influential Visual Novel, often attributed for popularizing the genre by exposing it to a new generation of fans and creators alike that would understand the potential this medium had for telling complex and interesting stories. Yet, nowadays, its been vastly overshadowed by its more popular con...
The Hidden Gem of the Nintendo Wii | Fragile Dreams Retrospective
Просмотров 21 тыс.3 года назад
Fragile Dreams: Farewell Ruins of the Moon released in 2009 for the Nintendo Wii with little to no fanfare. Over time, it has gained a certain reputation for being one of the most poignant games ever made, but also one of the most flawed. Is the game worthy of its cult status? Are its flaws too great? In this video, I present my perspective and analysis of what makes Fragile Dreams such a speci...
Despite Everything, It's Still You | An UNDERTALE Analysis
Просмотров 3,8 тыс.4 года назад
Since it released 5 years ago, it has reached millions around the world, earning a mythical reputation that few games possess. Love it or hate it, it became a phenomenon. And now, it is my turn to dissect all its details. Because despite everything, its still you... UNDERTALE. This project has been in the making for about two years and it features 7 full chapters, over 160 pages, and more than ...
This is still the one game I want a remake/remaster the story it tells is something else and it was beautiful even when they had so many flaws which can easily be fixed to
The greatest irony in this world is that already-perfect games are getting remakes that completely miss the point of what made the original good, yet flawed gems like Fragile Dreams can't even get a second chance. Yet, for that same reason, I also feel like maybe that's why it's better to just embrace the fact that Fragile Dreams isn't perfect. Any attempt to remake it, especially in the wrong hands, could just lead to a different game entirely that loses the original's spark. That said, I really wouldn't argue against a remaster that changes nothing other than streamlining the controls to work on a gamepad.
i am among the few that saw this and actually have a physical dvd case i got at a con. In my top3 of all time along with death note and grappler baki 1996 movie.🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I saw it.
One of the best videos about Tsukihime i have seen, i rly want to see your take on the remake
Haven't finished reading it, but so far, I like it!
I would play this game in 480p lol. The high resolution brings out flaws to the graphics that were likely never meant to be shown.
Well, none of my criticisms were directed at the game's visuals. In fact, I think the visuals are about as perfect as they could've been for the system, and playing the game in high resolution only helps me appreciate them a lot more.
The music in this game is something else
Dobra fabula ,postacie , muzyka i eksploracja. Ale gra po jakimś czasie robi się nudna. Słaby system walki
Never have played any of the Gungrave games. A friend recommended the anime 20 years ago, and it is still among my favorites. Janky animations sometimes grab my attention, but only for a few seconds: the great story and masterful execution are too good to be overshadowed by a few poorly drawn faces. Same as Fallout 2 in that regard: no matter to how many modern art I am exposed, and how the more and more outdated both look nowadays, they hold special place in my heart, and I still enjoy both almost as much as back in the days. I have Gungrave soundtrack is on my phone and listen to it from time to time when riding my bike or working. It's a shame that the anime is not widely known, but at least now one can discover it through Internet and download it or just start watching immediately on some site. Back then anime fans had to gather at the central square, discover stuff by talking to random people and wait for weeks until some kind soul copied the AVIs to a bunch of CD-Rs at your request. Nowadays, someone can play the modern G.O.R.E. game, discover its ties to anime and instantly start watching it, sharing it with friends via social media and whatnot. Much easier for the anime to become more known.
@@bytefu Yeah, I don't think you'd enjoy the Gungrave games. They're a completely different beast in terms of story, tone and style, and they follow a completely different continuity and more from the Anime. They're pretty alright if you just want a mindless game to play in the afternoon though. Well, except Gungrave Overdose.
Mechanics-wise it's an rpg. There's plenty of those. It doesn't do anything truely new. Not any more. Proabably not even before it's creation. The story is rather bleak. Every time the kid catches a break, it's taken from him. Even this story of loss isn't anything unique. The twist of the story, the reasoning for things being the way they are, also is not unique. It was definetly worth the flaws to experience it's whole. Definitely a game I need to replay. I don't even really recall how I found out about this game. Maybe i discovered it when I was going through the entire list of known Wii games before the Wii was canned to find all the games that would interest me, and buy them before they became impossible/unaffordable to obtain.
Lmao this game seems boring as fuck. whats with the ghost having huge tits?
japan
I don't recall the girl character having "huge tits"
I admit I love the anime but the ending kind of loses it's punch just a little if you play video games. Solely for the fact that Gungrave overdose is (to my knowledge) a cannon sequel to the anime. Meaning after this emotional ending.........Brandon is brought back from the dead AGAIN to................eventually fight aliens alongside a rockabilly ghost and pyrokinetic zombie?
The Gungrave videogame series and anime series are two separate canons. The games revolve around the alien drug SEED and everything is explained around that, which the anime makes no mention of. The Anime is practically it's own self-contained continuity (that's arguably an in-universe sequel to Trigun instead)
Oh look its what i like the most, video essay about an obscure game by someone greatly passionate about it, Theres surprisingly a lot of those videos
This game was deserved a soundtrack made by the Moody Blues.
First of all thank you for your video that describe gungrave very well and im glad to see people in the comment that watch gungrave and they understand that gungrave is not like the other anime, its a trip of emotion, Gungrave is something that nobody are able to do and omg the anime was realesed 21 years ago and even today people can't do things like that... Or maybe one in the years if we are lucky so obviously i wish most people watch Gungrave first because is one of the best media on this earth and like that maybe there are gonna wake up and finnaly realise that people was soooo more talented before. What i just write are maybe useless 'cause nobody gonna read that but if you read that i hope you agree with me and if you don't already watch gungrave go do it ! Have a nice day ya'll since you read this
Great video. Haven't re-watched the series since the DVDs were originally released, but your ending with the clips from the series brought back some memories. Thanks for the reminder to check out this show again.
The names of some characters are such of that time, Bloodu War, Beyonddo de Gravu, Broudy Hari. Bruandon Heath, Bickgu Daddy, Mirenium.
It's still not as well known. It really makes me feel sad 😿
Why didnt u release more video game essays 😤 u have a potential to grow this channel bro, is life in rush ?? Ur voice is so sweet btw best for commentaries and video essays like these
I do appreciate all the warm compliments, but like you said, life for me kinda sucks. After putting out a bunch of videos that did worse and worse views-wise, I just didn't feel like it was worth it. I mean, I'd have to split myself apart pumping out videos and gaming the algorithm to get anything worthwhile out of the channel, all while working a full time job that sucked out my mental health to a really dark place. If I had the time and money to come back, would I? Probably, but it's a long shot. Right now, I feel more inclined to put whatever energy I have left in creative projects and creating original things rather than making video essays to share opinions nobody really cares about all that much. Still, I'm glad you did get something out of these.
@@HowardHeyman yeah thats understandable considering current world where companies suck our souls out and social media the way its moving quickly i get it. take your time friend ^ ^
Warning: Long rant ahead I have a.. really weird relationship with this game, right now. I have very, VERY limited memories of a game I would watch my sister play, years ago. I remember it being slightly horror-esque. I also remember seeing these floating jellyfish monsters, and an area where you're attacked by dogs (I remembered it being like an abandoned railway), and hearing a Japanese song somewhere in the mix. That's it. That's the extent of my memories with the game, and that wierd deja-vu has been stuck with me for over a decade now. The memories were very much real, but far too blurry to actually research what I was looking for. I stumbled upon this video by complete accident, basically. I was watching a video talking about games with abandoned worlds for their settings. Browsed the comments, one of them mentioned this game by name, said it was beautiful, lonely, and something about a crow, which I didn't understand at the time, but was curious nonetheless. But, I looked it up, saw your thumbnail, thought to myself that it looked strangely familiar in a way I couldn't ever describe, watched some of the video, and.. This is it. I'm certain. This is the game that I've been looking for for years now, despite just barely remembering it. I watched the trailer on IGN's channel immediately after as well. Heard the Japanese song, saw the jellyfish monsters, saw the dogs, saw the same lonely landscape that I just barely remember, this is it. So, despite not remembering anything about this game, I feel a really deep connection to it right now, and if I see my sister again, I really hope I remember to ask her if this game sparks any memories for her.
Glad my video helped you rekindle your interest!
@@HowardHeyman Thank you for it, lol. If I ever find this game or my Wii again, I'll remember to return to this video afterwards. Since my memories are so blurred, I'd like to try this game spoiler-free, like playing it for the first time
Reminder Seto’s dub VA also voices Nate in Yo-Kai Watch
My uncle had this game, and I was always enthralled by the case and reading the manual, the atmosphere, aesthetic, characters, and premise peaked my interest terribly. Finally looking it up all these years later, your intro was sufficient assurance that there is something to be enjoyed. I will remain spoiler-free and keep an eye out for a Wii and a copy of _Fragile Dreams_ to quench my long curiosity.
Just a word of warning, the game is extremely rare. You have better luck just playing it on an emulator unless you're willing to pay upwards of $100 just to get a copy (Wii not included).
@@HowardHeyman I see. A bit surprising for such a little known game. Well, perhaps I'll borrow it from my uncle, I fully expect he still has it. Thanks. ... Wait, how the heck does one play a motion control game on an emulator?
@@dreamwalking I think the problem is that, around 2020 or so, scalpers took advantage of many people's nostalgia for older games and started overcharging for used games. Since Fragile Dreams sold so little, but has a reputation for being a cult classic, they can get away with charging so much for it. Also, Dolphin emulator is fully compatible with Wii remote. If your PC/Tablet/Phone has a Bluetooth adapter and if you have a Wii sensor bar that can plug into USB, you can play it seamlessly. That's how I played it for this video. You can also make a custom controller configuration if that sounds too difficult.
@@HowardHeyman It's so strange to see the prices of things keep going up... I got a copy of _Pokémon Leaf Green_ for $15 only a few years ago, and now It's hard to get a Pokémon cartridge for less than 40 or 60 bucks. Some MTG cards I bought for less than a dollar would now cost me over $16 to get an additional copy of. Just about the only nostalgia items I collect that remain at a low price are UMD Videos, because nobody knows that they exist and nobody wants them. For most intents and purposes I'm literally the only guy that loves these things. But scalping off of people's nostalgia with items that are meant to be played for fun seems it's own particular sort of repulsive. I see I have a lot to learn about emulation. I suppose it will likely stay that way, I like old things and physical things, I'm starting to realize I may never really get into emulation. Thanks for the replies, it's always nice to actually have a conversation with somebody. It's especially neat that it started with something that the one has a deep fondness for and the other has only as a strange and alluring memory from their youth.
@@HowardHeymanI have obtained a Wii U! Gonna ask my uncle if he knows where his copy of _Fragile Dreams_ is.
This was a great review - you definitely gave love to the art design and music and storytelling without being an apologist for the Wii mote-throwing clunkiness and awful level design.
I was expecting like 10, maybe 20 pages. Its 160. God damn. Thats dedication right there
Dedication, or self-punishment.
I playd this game years ago. and i still remember it. back then the arms in the bathroom freaked me out so hard. But yea i enjoyd it
Banger anime i need to play the games sometime fr
The first Gungrave is a cool 3 hours arcade style game. Not amazing, but for its length its mindlessly replayable. Gungrave G.O.R.E basically adds a lot more depth and challenge to the experience, but its a lot less polished and consistent in its balance and presentation. Would definitely recommend both. Gungrave Overdose is trash.
Im a year late to the party but man i love the work you put into this. Gungrave is a dramatic masterpiece
Makes me very happy to hear you think so.
Owned the PS2 games, soundtracks and signed cloth poster by the voice actors as well as the ADV DVDs 💪😤 HERE COMES THE RAIN!!!
Hero
You bet your sweet ass this is a golden series
Who else is extremely excited about the on the way fate/stay night remake "not trying to sway people but i haven't read the thing in a long time"
Me. I'm the "extremely excited about the on the way Fate / Stay Night"
Is this song a cover? Give me a link bro!!
The song is "Good Night" from the UNDERTALE official soundtrack. Track 101.
This anime is a MASTERPIECE!!! ❤❤❤❤❤
Just finished watching the anime yesterday and damn. Usually i am not really into anime, but this is one is special - delivering such an emotional, complex story with so many twists and turns, further expanded upon by the characters. Even though the animation isn't the best, i feel like the artistic style carried it, and still manages to look good most of the time. When i started watching it i didn't even know that it was based on a game, i was searching up a voice actor and accidentally stumbled upon the anime, which i am extremely glad i did. I really hope this gets the attention it deserves, it is by far the best anime i have ever seen, hell in general one of the best shows i have seen! It's truly is criminal how small the fanbase is.
Finished the game 15 years ago. Still remember the feeling, this is why i comment today. This and little king story are the hidden gems for wii for sure. Kind regards
I would absolutely die of excitement if fragile dreams was brought back as a vr game that would be awesome.
Bro now is even more impossible not to have expectations for the game after you've praised it so highly
42 minutes…. Pass
Damn, you're right. I forgot to put Subway Surfers gameplay in the corner. Have to keep the zoomer audience engaged after all.
42 minutes....smash. Great video.
Let this anime serve as an example that you should own up to what you can do. Brandon was fully capable of being a leader yet chose to be mostly silent. It’s a kool superpower to have, but it leaves you to the mercy of Snakes like Harry. Also, be loyal to yourself before anyone else. Never pull a weapon in you ain’t immediately going to fire. Blah Blah blah, fuck em. Harry was a Snake, but Brandon was living in a false reality.
I remember buying this whole box set in some Sam Goody in a mall. Back then I took a chance on anime and hoped it was good, This one sounded alright, but oh damn...it was marvelous! The first night I just watched episode after episode saying, "Just one more then I'll go to bed". By the end I was in tears and I had to start it all over again. One of, if not THE best anime out there.
Stunning game i will never forget i guess, coz i finished it years ago and i still do not forget
Masterpiece

I think a hindrance of the wii being the console for this game, is people obviously wanted to capitalize on the shape and way the controllers work B U T didn’t always know how to effectively incorporate it into the game without it messing up the entire dynamics of the controls. Even with like the Zelda games and the Navi you see this happen. It becomes ignored. It needed to be IMO a console where games came out specifically for those kinds of controls but also games didn’t HAVE to incorporate it in unnecessary ways. It’s smart to use it for the flashlight and camera! It can add to the spookiness of the game. But not if you can’t adequately control how the character is walking or interacting with their environment. /sorry rant who cares hahaha
I did a lot of research before doing this video and I feel like the opposite may actually be true. From everything I know, this seems like it was a passion project for Director/Producer/Writer Kentaro Kawashima (who hadnt directed or written anything prior or since). It was originally meant for PS2, but he switched course when he knew the Wii would greatly benefit from the motion of a flashlight. I think what really may have sunk this game just comes down to lack of experience in developing games of this type or scale (The team behind this had apparently only made one strategy RPG for PS2 before, and Tri-crescendo had only ever done Eternal Sonata). It just seems like a really small team worked on the game so it's natural that lack of experience may have led to production issues. It also explains why the game becomes so linear towards the second half and tends to have a lot of padding. Obviously a lot of it is speculation, but at the end of the day, it just solidifies my thesis that games can coexist with their own flaws. In this case, I feel that at least the vision of the director remained pure, even if it came at the cost of polish as a whole. But I can live with that. Anyways, that was a long winded reply. Happy you liked the video though!
@@HowardHeymanthank you for your insight and feedback! It does make a lot of sense. God! What a dream if they tried again with all their talent and skills now!
@@Karrokick I think Kentaro Kawashima is still in the industry. Last credit was ironically enough as a Programmer for Yakuza 0 as well as a lot of Special Thanks credits. Though I doubt we'll ever see a revival of the series. I doubt the game sold very well and Bandai Namco hasn't referenced it since. There IS a trademark they filed recently for "Fractured Daydream" which sounds eerily similar even though it probably has zero connection.
@@HowardHeymanthe name is just too similar maybe we’ll get lucky lol
Watched your video on karro stream last night, can tell you put alot into making this video. Got me interested in a game i never would have tried out.
Dude I stumbled on this game from a rom on a modded wii knowing nothing about it.... it was.... well it was a very formative experience lol
Bro i just finished watching this show, and i haven't cried this hard since watching gurren lagann
Gungrave is my favorite anime of all time and anytime I see anything in regards to it I'm watching it. This was a game that turned into an anime and it's fucking great yet no one talks about it
You don't play this game for the gameplay, you play this game for the exploration and the story. You really feel like you're in Japan once you're halfway through. In a way...
Finished this game about two years back and recently came back to it again. This game influenced me in so many ways i can't even begin to describe and became a huge part of me despite it's gameplay and story issues. I wish more people knew about this amazing game.
I seriously come back to this game all the time haha
This is one of my favorite games, such a great game. Very few games I’ve connected to emotionally like with this one.
That was beautiful thank you for this man
