    Just finished watching the anime yesterday and damn. Usually i am not really into anime, but this is one is special - delivering such an emotional, complex story with so many twists and turns, further expanded upon by the characters. Even though the animation isn't the best, i feel like the artistic style carried it, and still manages to look good most of the time. When i started watching it i didn't even know that it was based on a game, i was searching up a voice actor and accidentally stumbled upon the anime, which i am extremely glad i did. I really hope this gets the attention it deserves, it is by far the best anime i have ever seen, hell in general one of the best shows i have seen! It's truly is criminal how small the fanbase is.

    The english dub for this anime was actually superior to the original voices, that doesnt happen often, the scene where harry screams brandons name in the elevator will always haunt me.

    Great video. Haven't re-watched the series since the DVDs were originally released, but your ending with the clips from the series brought back some memories. Thanks for the reminder to check out this show again.

    First of all thank you for your video that describe gungrave very well and im glad to see people in the comment that watch gungrave and they understand that gungrave is not like the other anime, its a trip of emotion, Gungrave is something that nobody are able to do and omg the anime was realesed 21 years ago and even today people can't do things like that... Or maybe one in the years if we are lucky so obviously i wish most people watch Gungrave first because is one of the best media on this earth and like that maybe there are gonna wake up and finnaly realise that people was soooo more talented before. What i just write are maybe useless 'cause nobody gonna read that but if you read that i hope you agree with me and if you don't already watch gungrave go do it ! Have a nice day ya'll since you read this

    Never have played any of the Gungrave games. A friend recommended the anime 20 years ago, and it is still among my favorites. Janky animations sometimes grab my attention, but only for a few seconds: the great story and masterful execution are too good to be overshadowed by a few poorly drawn faces. Same as Fallout 2 in that regard: no matter to how many modern art I am exposed, and how the more and more outdated both look nowadays, they hold special place in my heart, and I still enjoy both almost as much as back in the days. I have Gungrave soundtrack is on my phone and listen to it from time to time when riding my bike or working. It's a shame that the anime is not widely known, but at least now one can discover it through Internet and download it or just start watching immediately on some site. Back then anime fans had to gather at the central square, discover stuff by talking to random people and wait for weeks until some kind soul copied the AVIs to a bunch of CD-Rs at your request. Nowadays, someone can play the modern G.O.R.E. game, discover its ties to anime and instantly start watching it, sharing it with friends via social media and whatnot. Much easier for the anime to become more known.

      @@bytefu Yeah, I don't think you'd enjoy the Gungrave games. They're a completely different beast in terms of story, tone and style, and they follow a completely different continuity and more from the Anime. They're pretty alright if you just want a mindless game to play in the afternoon though. Well, except Gungrave Overdose.

    It's been ages since I've seen someone cover this hidden gem. I loved it with a passion since I love more adult orientated anime like cowboy bebop, Trigun, ergo proxy, ghost in the shell, etc. Sadly a lot of animes like these don't get much attention since modern day anime fans are only interested in current anime and frankly don't love anime that doesn't involve a waifu/cute anime girl in it.

    If you really look at the ending when they call Brandon or Harry you realize who was on which side as it all really came down to those two just like it started.
    The way it scaled them up from how they looked at the start of the series to now in the last episode as they were talking but that line from Brandon.

    I remember buying this whole box set in some Sam Goody in a mall. Back then I took a chance on anime and hoped it was good, This one sounded alright, but oh damn...it was marvelous! The first night I just watched episode after episode saying, "Just one more then I'll go to bed". By the end I was in tears and I had to start it all over again. One of, if not THE best anime out there.

    I remember seeing the game at either Blockbuster or some local competitor to Blockbuster when I was way younger but I never rented it. Some years later I found the anime on a pirate site and I couldn't stop watching it. I've always been amazed by high quality animes that aren't an adaptation of a manga, LN, book ect. I'll never forget such an action hero names like Brandon Heat or Harry McDowell.

      The first Gungrave is a cool 3 hours arcade style game. Not amazing, but for its length its mindlessly replayable. Gungrave G.O.R.E basically adds a lot more depth and challenge to the experience, but its a lot less polished and consistent in its balance and presentation. Would definitely recommend both.
      Gungrave Overdose is trash.

    Don't know what version of the anime you're showing here but its been altered from the original. The original animation actually looks really good, among some of the best anime ever made.
    Great video tho, more people need to know about Gungrave.

    • @HowardHeyman
      @HowardHeyman  2 года назад

      It definitely has. I used AI upscaling algorithms to get a sharper picture compared to the SD DVD quality footage. Mind you, I would never recommend anyone watch Gungrave in this way. I just did it so the footage looked more consistent with the 1080p quality of the rest of the video as a bonus detail, otherwise the video would end up with blurry footage for the anime contrasted with the other HD quality footage I used from other sources.
      Personally, I strongly recommend watching Gungrave in its original DVD 540p quality. I wouldn't even recommend the 1080i Blu-ray, since the upscaling they used tends to make the presentation look smudged.
      Great observation though, I'm glad you noticed!

    • @HowardHeyman
      @HowardHeyman  2 года назад

      Something else to point out though is that even in its original form without upscaling, I still think some of the animation and presentation of the original is flawed and inconsistent. I showed few instances of it in the video, but I still missed a couple I could've shown.

    • @ninjasoundaz
      @ninjasoundaz 2 года назад +1

      @@HowardHeyman flawed sure so are all the best anime in some ways.. Gungrave is much more cinematic with its shots and lighting than most anime, really the visuals are some of the best and not a downside at all imo. The AI upscaling makes it look pretty terrible tho..

    • @HowardHeyman
      @HowardHeyman  2 года назад

      @@ninjasoundaz Well, in the video I show specific examples and plenty of praise to the dramatic directing of the show, so I didn't forget to give credit where credit was much deservedly due.
      Although, with the upscaling, it was a decision I made early on and it was too late to turn back once I realized it didn't have great results. I can only really see the full high resolution render of the video after the video has been complete and the frame by frame results looked promising at least. My hardware isn't good enough to let me render every time to check either . At least some parts look pretty okay, I think, but I should've just stuck with the footage from the Blu-ray. Would've certainly been less time consuming. As I said though, I don't recommend anyone watch Gungrave that way and I'm hoping people will seek out the officially available methods of watching the series after my video to experience it on their own.

    Let this anime serve as an example that you should own up to what you can do. Brandon was fully capable of being a leader yet chose to be mostly silent. It’s a kool superpower to have, but it leaves you to the mercy of Snakes like Harry.
    Also, be loyal to yourself before anyone else. Never pull a weapon in you ain’t immediately going to fire. Blah
    Blah blah, fuck em.
    Harry was a Snake, but Brandon was living in a false reality.

  • @itsdantaylor
    @itsdantaylor 3 месяца назад

    I admit I love the anime but the ending kind of loses it's punch just a little if you play video games. Solely for the fact that Gungrave overdose is (to my knowledge) a cannon sequel to the anime. Meaning after this emotional ending.........Brandon is brought back from the dead AGAIN to................eventually fight aliens alongside a rockabilly ghost and pyrokinetic zombie?

    • @HowardHeyman
      @HowardHeyman  3 месяца назад

      The Gungrave videogame series and anime series are two separate canons. The games revolve around the alien drug SEED and everything is explained around that, which the anime makes no mention of. The Anime is practically it's own self-contained continuity (that's arguably an in-universe sequel to Trigun instead)
