Tribute to JEAN AUSTIN - “ I Ain’t No Stranger Now”
If you are a fan of Dorothy Norwood then you know back in the day she had her own group called THE NORWOOD SINGERS, and from this group came a voice like no other, Jean Austin. Her famous lead with the group was entitled “The Failures Not In God, It’s In Me”. Her smokey and rasp voice made her stand out in the background. Austin was born in Birmingham, Alabama but later relocated to Cleveland, Ohio. She got her start with Dorothy Norwood but also traveled with Brother Joe May. Austin has made a few recordings on the SongBird label in the late 60s, and released two albums in the mid to late 70s. The Gospel community is very grateful for Jean Austin and her work in the Gospel Music Industry...

According to Mavis, Mahalia had asked her to help out on this program, because she wasn't feeling well. Mavis sang the first verse, then unexpectedly someone helped Mahalia to the microphone and she began to sing. Mavis said she was almost overcome, realizing that suddenly here she was, singing side by side with her idol and role model. The two had known eacch other since Mavis was a young girl; their friendship ran deep, and it lasted until Mahalia died.
