Not only does it make it clear how to go through it all, but along the way it also gave a good breakdown on suitable auxiliary equipment to go with the scope. One thing that might be of interest is the range of eyepieces you use on this for visual purposes.

    What is the C14 like for mirror shift and flop with all over sky pointing? Does it have a mirror lock like I think Meade introduced for their larger scopes? I found with even a C9.25 on large Losmandy rails on a Vixen Atlux + Skysensor2000-PC mount that guiding side saddle or scope on top that it wasn't able to address these issues even in an observatory. With a 300 star Tpoint model I got all over sky pointing easily within 30 arc seconds - but for long subs I had to use an Off Axis Guider. Have you ever tried On Axis Guiding (Foresight Innovation's beam splitter - using a cold mirror) - I would love to hear how that works on a scope of this size! Lastly is the mount offered a great mix for this OTA - is its tracking and pointing that good - (what's its RMS over a 5 minute sub)? Do you really need a higher quality mount for such a large and long focal length OTA? Many thanks, Matt

    Hi Scott, I really enjoyed your video, you are so right about "shockingly little on the internet" about these mounts.I am a newbie and my first mount is the Rainbow RST-135E, and I have had a time learning what's needed to use this mount. Your video really helped, did i understand you correctly that first you Polar Align, then you HOME, then you slew to your target? I thought I could polar align, park in that general area, then sleep to my target... could you clear that up for me? I was also interested in the fact you suggested to use Sky Safari as I haven't really chosen that kind of software, i have just been setting up NINA. Rainbow also suggests SkyX? what do you think? sorry for so many questions... thanks again

    Hi Scott. Thanks so much for this beautifully clear video. It’s good to try and get an idea of weight manageability on this 46 lb edge 14 and this helps. I’m guessing however you are a six footer and are at an advantage in mounting this. I was forced to abandon the CPC 11 fixed to the fork mount because weight approached 67 lbs. I will probably opt for a RASA 11 about 42lbs and see how I go. Certainly this gives me hope the C14 could be managed in the field however for planets until I get a permanent set up. Wondering how you find the RST 300, as I’m going to buy one. I believe they weigh about 9 lbs. Going to buy a supermount to go with it again due to carbon fibre lightness. Did you find a counterweight was a must for the mount and how much counterweight was required?

Some of your followers asked about lifting the OTA. I always lift the OTA by myself and slide it up the saddle clamp on the CGX-L. Never a problem. I’m 67 years old and 6’-1”. That said I recently discovered the table method and I bought wheels for the rig. Can you explain why your guide scope on top can’t be used for guiding thus requiring the OAG?

    Why do I need an harmonic drive mount? Happy with my CEM120 and CEM60 for portable use. When this is 8K$ count me out. I would never pay that for a mount. Despite all of the hype you don't need anything fancy when you're moving at sidereal rate. There are a lot of capabile mounts in the 1-3k$ range. Besides, ZWO have just annouced their own harmonic mount. That will bring the price down. My advice is don't be an early adopter, wait a couple of years for the technology to prove itself and the bugs to be worked out. Then buy one at a much better price point.

    • @derekbaker3279

      Hi Neil. You are quite correct. There are many other more affordable options that can do the job. (note: the ZWO A5 Harmonic mount has less than half the capacity of the Rainbow Astro RST300. A closer comparison would be the RST135.). Furthermore, for the money you spend on this mount, you are close to affording a mount with top-notch encoders that will reduce PE to negligible levels & perhaps even enable unguided imaging. However....here's the big deal about these mounts....portability. For a given capacity, the 'equatorial head' of a harmonic mount is much smaller & lighter, and generally no counterweights are required. Given that many amateur astronomers (a) need to carry their rig up & down stairs or move it around the yard to be able to see/image objects, (b) have to travel a long way to find truly dark skies, and (c) will fly to a location where more of the southern celestial sights can be viewed/imaged, I will suggest that harmonic mounts are going to become quite popular, and for legitimate reasons.

    Great Review!! Would this unit work with the ZWO ASI Air Pro/Plus instead of the Eagle? do you know if the Celestron Aluminum Dew Shield with Cover Cap will fit with two D size plates installed (as you have)? Are you using the optional thermistor to control temps? I'm going to check you out on AstroWorldTV.

    • @AstroPlayground
      @AstroPlayground 2 года назад

      Well, seeing as the D plates are Celestron‘s, I would imagine their dew shield would fit with no problem. I am using the echo in conjunction with the eagle to control the dew heaters. As far as the ASI air, I Believe it should work fine, my buddy Eric is a strict ASI air user and he has this dew heater for his 8 inch HD.

    Excellent setup indeed... I've seen several of your last videoswhere you migrated from a clutch and worm-wormwheel based CGX-L mount to a much advanced technology Strainwave Harmonic Drive Rainbow Astro mount... Can't wait to see your reviews on your rig... One question though... I have no doubt that Rainbow RST mount is decades ahead of the CGX-L mount, but since the RST doesn't have RA and DEC clutches and therefore when you roll your wheely bar over different types of surfaces will not the harmonic drive get jerks with the weight of 45lbs EdgeHD 14"? On the other side people have strongly recommended to disengage the clutches in traditional Synta made mounts like the CGX-L or EQ6/EQ8 mounts when traveling or they're getting rolled on a dolly system... Is it probably the harmonic drive is strong enough to bear the stress/jerks from your heavy EdgeHD 14" even when it is in motion?

    • @AstroPlayground
      @AstroPlayground 2 года назад

      The RST300 has an internal break that prevents it from moving at all until electrical power is applied. The maximum payload for this harmonic drive mount is 110 pounds and it’s so unbelievably strong that I don’t worry about that scenario at all. Great question though, thanks for commenting! 😁

    Nice video, safety first. One more advice, take off the front telescope lid before you lift it onto the mount. Of course, you must be careful not to get too many fingerprint on the glass. (Not dangerous). If you hold the telescope partly with your hand on the lid, it can come off at a critical timing and you might drop the whole scope.
