Backgrounds & overlays
In this video I am going to be demonstrating the effect on your image of using a blurred background and a textured overlay. My personal view is that certain textures are not right for my flower images but I just keep trying until I find one that suits. Textures are everywhere just go out with your camera or mobile phone and you will find them.

In this video I am editing an old image from December 2018. Taken at Moseley Old Hall in the UK it had a dull background due to the crocus growing out of soil. My edit of Red Amaryllis

This winter in the UK has been particularly miserable and with a lack of flowers I have started to pull my old images out of retirement and give them a new lease of life. This is definately something I would recommend and you would be surprised how therapeutic it can be. @@markanthonydaniels thank you Mark, I appreciate your comments, glad you enjoyed
Thank you for sharing Susie, can I ask did you blur the background first as in your other videos, and then apply the texture over that?
Hi Julie, yes the green background was blurred first and then I applied the texture as an overlay
I'm learning so much from you Susie. I have been taking photo's to use as textures this weekend. Thank you for sharing.
@@susanfirth2279 i’m so pleased you’re learning so much Susan. Have fun finding textures they are everywhere.
Absolutely stunning, can't wait to try it myself.
Thanks for watching. Have fun!

Thank you very much !
You are welcome!
Hi Susie. A dumb question maybe. After cropping your layer is still showing as Background. Mine showed Layer 0. That confused me.
Hi Kevin there are no dumb questions. I have just had chance to look through my video. I think what you may have done is click the lock symbol to unlock the background which will give you Layer 0. You simply have to lock the layer back to a background. Does that make sense ?
Hi that was a good video that flower looks beautiful. I am very new to photoshop layers masks etc so I hope I can do this 😊
@@angelathomas2117 thank so much for watching Angela. I am fairly new as well so if I can I am sure you can.😊
Thanks so much for this video. I can see how textures can really affect the photo and needs to be picked carefully. I’m gonna try this with maybe a single flower. See how that goes.
Yes Kris as I explained not every texture suits and not every texture needs to be all over the image. I find that can be distracting sometimes. Be interesting to see your results.
Susie, once you’ve gone through your many steps, and you now have a number of layer masks, and you want to export, do you merge the layers or just pick out one of them and leave the rest?
Hi Dianne if I’m happy with all the edits I will first save the file with all the layers as a PSD and then flatten the image and save as a small JPEG for sharing. Be careful though the more layers the larger the file size. Hope that helps.
@@susierphotography5513 Yes, that really does help Susie. Thank you so much. I so appreciate you getting back to me. I love your beautiful images!
Love how you take us step by step! Thanks for another wonderful tutorial.
Glad you enjoyed it Dianne, this is how I like to learn
Great video Susie! Thanks again!
You’re very welcome Dianne
Absolutely brilliant, thank you so much! Question, do you edit your original image in Camera Raw or Lightroom, then bring it into PS for this final editing?
RAW are automatically opened in Camera raw, I might choose auto before opening in Photoshop where I will edit most.
@@susierphotography5513 thank you again!

That is really nice of you Susan and I am so glad I am helping you understand Photoshop. It is a massive program, I have see it grow in the time I have been using it. There are so many different ways to achieve the same result which I confuses people. Well done for persevering.
Thank you so much for sharing your methods. I’ve really enjoyed all your videos, and your way of explaining your work flow is always helpful. I’ve learned a lot about Photoshop from you, so thanks again.

I love the way you speak, very slowly compared to some others who are rushing through all the steps and keep saying how easy it is..wich it isn't. This video is excellent and very helpful, thanks a lot.
@@NicoleVisser75 You’re very welcome thank you so much for your lovely comments. This is the speed at which I like to learn, I can’t follow some of the videos especially the ones that don’t say anything there are just prompts on the screen.
How did you go back to Camera Raw
Hi Patricia initially when processing in RAW for the first time Photoshop will automatically go into Camera Raw however if you want to use Camera Raw again just choose Filter from the top dropdown menu. Remember though that unless you make a new layer you will not be able to reverse that edit.
I’ve learned more from you about PS than most others. Thank you

Audio has a male’s voice
I am definately a female Patricia, there is no male voice on my audio 😊
I know you are a female but there is a male voice in the background
@patriciaalexander-johnson4797 I can only assume with this being one of my early videos this was background noise not a male voice , apologies for that. My later videos are much improved, everyone has to start somewhere.
I don’t understand what you were doing with the clone stamp when you went around the edges. Your audio is messing up.
Patricia my video is fine 700 people have watched it without any complaints. Sorry it must have been your end. If you need further help with cloning let me know.
