I honestly think most people are over thinking Series final test to make it more than it was. It was a childish notion from Serie that 12 people can't pass the test at once and that Frieren can't pass it either.

Read the manga after the 2nd episode and holy was it totally worth the 8 hours of reading it was totally amazing and made me wish i knew it sooner They really nailed the anime too I cant wait for thr 1st season to be animated

It's aight it's a cool adaptation and is no ways bad but it definitely ain't worth the crazy hype that people claim is gonna "chnage shonen" it's just a decent story

It's also quite realistic, you would be surprised how many institutions in society have their version of a vibe test(though it is usually done over the course of a longer period of time) the petty little games included, deans and professors failing students purely to stroke their own egos or to maintain some artificial standard being prime examples.

Yet another anime with completely overpowered characters 🙄 how original and entertaining.

Serie says she likes magic as a weapon, but made no effort in dealing with the demon king. She was around a long time before freieren, reieren and flamme are *relatively* close in age and the demon king was already trying to wipe out all the elves. Even when confronting her own genocide, she didn’t fight the DK. She also says she hates flammes idea about humans doing magic or being involved with helping them. Yet here she is, using flammes flower spell and being the main organisation in fostering mages but also in sharing absurdly powerful spells only with those she deems safe to do so. Serie does the opposite of what she says, while also, doing exactly what she says.

I'm all for giving credit where it's due, but can we avoid negative comparisons? It would be great to celebrate something on its own merits instead of putting something else down.

Can we appreciate that all the challenges are made irrelevant because of the 3rd, and Serie having perfect judgement according to Frieren? Dozens of mages were killed in the first test... Because Serie values her unlimited time so highly she won't take five seconds per weaker mage to tell them no. Those deaths are because Serie is lazy, lmao.

I enjoy the idea of qualitative judgements being a part of a qualification exam. It satisfies my autism to see the spirit of a law/rule/role having veto power over the rigid definition. In the third season of Nanoha we learn that the fully magical world* Nanoha lives on has a peculiar "disability." If a rigorous psychological and magical exam determines that you're a dangerous psychopath or similar, you are barred from ever learning magic in any capacity. This leaves someone effectively powerless, unable to do real or lasting harm, and keeps them from becoming the kind of threat only a powerful mage can be. It also means they can't use an elevator without someone else pushing the button. Everything in their society is magical, making a non-mage effectively handicapped. I like this, because it shows forethought and responsibility. The kind of society that would do this probably has a support system for these people, who almost certainly can't be employed. Too bad season three of Nanoha is awful. There's a book where a heavily insular magical school accepts a commoner for her hilariously large mana pool. She faces disrespect and is shunned and bullied. There is a tournament in the curriculum and her confidant helps her use it to turn her reputation around. She studies very hard to try and meet the basic education that everyone else already has. She executes specific strategies to demonstrate her competence and willingness to engage seriously with the tournament and the student body in general. For the first rounds. In the final round, her opponent is too skilled to challenge. So she stops playing fair and buries him in enough basic magic arrows that she _causes the professor maintaining his emergency shield to stagger._ Clearly demonstrating that she could have buried every opponent, but chose not to. The whole thing is just framed very well as showing the school that she is one of them, and also the _strongest_ one of them. *They've developed magic to the point of a futuristic society. As in, scientific study producing technology that functions entirely through magic.

Serie is a hypocrite of the highest order, and that's part of what makes her interesting. She looks down on Flamme and Frieren for hiding their auras and practicing "useless" magic like the flower spell, but she does the same thing and cultivates a garden with that very spell. She thinks magic should be used for war, but never got off her ass to actually fight the Demon King (as far as we know), despite being a more accomplished mage than Frieren. She says she doesn't care about her apprentices, but remembers them all. Suffice it to say that Serie is not honest about what she actually wants or cares about, but she's probably a few thousand years off from recognizing her innate hypocrisy and dealing with that. In the meantime, people just need to deal with her, one way or another.

Serie does not view magic as a tool for combat. She views it as a tool to solve any task. What Serie hates about Frieren is that she is wasting her time in a single area instead of embracing that. She also obviously holds Frieren to a higher standard because she is an elf. She has more time to waste which makes it even more infuriating to Serie that Frieren is doing it. That being said, it's not that Serie doesn't understand Frieren. She knows why Frieren does what she does and why it was necessary not to be known and suppress her mana. She just doesn't agree with focusing solely on that.

When series 3 of Konosuba aired earlier this year, it occured to me that if Megumin had taken this test, she would have had a good chance of passing, thanks to her overwhelming confidence and laserlike focus on magic as a force for defeating powerful enemies.

Frieren is a peaceful mage for a peaceful time. Fern is a demon slayer for cleaning up the DKs remains.

A mage needs guts - test. A very important test. You dont need mages running the moment there is trouble.

I think it is also very telling HOW people pass or fail the test The test is basically - you are thrown in a impossible challenge, and you have a split second to figure out how to tackle it. Kanne fails because she doesnt think she can do it. And creating a vision is the greatest part of magic Dunste, Laufen, Scharf and Ehre fail similarly - they are not yet capable of tackling something impossible Wirbel and Derken go through "how can I defeat this" moment, before figuring out it is impossible. They pass because they dont give up before trying Ubel is crazy hyperconfident, and not being able to defeat it never crosses her mind. She doesnt care if she dies trying Land also passes before he even begun - he made failing not part of the process, simply because he is not there. Serie respects that. Methode didnt even see her as a challenge. So she doesnt envision the failure. Fern realized that the challenge presented was not the real challenge. While Serie dislikes her, she can't deny that she is the only one that sees that she they would be playing chess, and not the checkers that is presented to everyone else. And Frieren.... well, Serie has a beef with her. Frieren doesnt want to be a first class mage - not in the way Serie wants first class mages. She just aced a test to be a rocket scientist, but she wants to be a dentist. Serie sees that, and basically tells her to come back the day she actually wants what Serie is offering.

This was the only part of an otherwise awesome show that I didn't like. So much focus on passing this test that, as Frieren points out already, is completely meaningless. And yes, the pass or fail determination was completely arbitrary.

I don’t think I really became sold on Aqua until season 2, but once I clicked with him, I really enjoyed him. I tend to be wary of edgy protagonists because I find that trope kind of irritating, but once I realized the Aqua’s “edgy” behavior was really the result of a trauma response, I came to like him way more. Seeing how his guilt over Ai’s death was a trigger whenever he would start to feel happy was really resonant and that pushed me into being really invested in seeing him try to overcome his trauma to become a new person (which only creates more dread for the inevitable moment when he realizes their father is still out there).

I was so nervous when they announced the anime. I love the manga, but I know its detailed drawings are the antithesis of what you want in an anime. I thought I was going to hate the simplistic style, but they went and took advantage of the simpler art to really make the animation fluid. Studio Bones did something similar with Mob Psycho 100. Turns out, the anime adaptation is so good, I don't even miss those hyper detailed drawings. Lol. And now I'm sad cuz the manga is on break until December 9th. The anime will literally be my only source of Dandadan for the next couple weeks.

Dandadan is have battles, actions, course poursuite, humor, also comedy romantic , and tragedy it have everything its not just a shonen nekketsu

It's too bad this video doesn't touch on episode 7. Everything up till that point was so good but episode 7 made it one of the greatest of all time!

I think people will be surprised at how much depth and how much heart this series has. Everything blends so well. I like how the characters are just normal in most ways, the way they relate to each other just feels different. There's going to be a lot of things happening at their school too which is going to be just awesome.

This video was amazing. I concluded a lot of the same but I was opened up to a few new angles to look at the final test from. However, all of that is overshadowed by the ending shot of Frieren asleep with the stary background. Any way to get that without the popups for a background for my computer?

not gonna lie this had to be the most "this feels like crack" experience I ever had. I got through 6 episodes in one sitting and I felt the withdrawel effects half an hour later, suddenly got itchy, I needed more. The amount of constraint it took to not just binge read the manga completely was insane. I really dont want to spoil myself but damn, this was an experience.

As someone who has not read the manga, even before I watched what that tsundere elf planed to do as 3rd exam, I knew it had to be sth bs that doesnt measure power or wisdom or even character. You are not giving the elf that you are most likely extremly jealous of a win. Frieren has the humanity she desires, because she already has her strenght most likely. She even tried to understand humans and most importantly Flamme even tho she publicly despises her, because aint no way you badmouth a mage and then proceed to use every spell they stand for yourself, especially the flowergarden. She seems afraid of change, while Frieren embraces it.

The fact that they release episodes every week so I think it means they make episodes every week

They both see the world the exact same. Both live their lives in a way thats all about power and capability. Frieren wastes a thousand years growing her power till she's a smurf. They both truly care about people and long for emotional connection. Seire through her apprentices, she heads the mages entirely to connect to people. Frieren by learning spells, its her excuse to be a part of the world and a part of peoples stories. She failes Frieren for the same reason she would fail herself. They both only persue what they truly find important by pretending to be doing something else. Those who failed lacked clarity of purpose.

I often see people say things indicating they think that Himmel made Frieren (the character, not the show), but I think people fail to credit that Himmel was just a scared lost kid UNTIL he met Frieren, and she made an impression on him not by being a cold calculated mage, but by having a heart for a total stranger, which basically became his defining feature. He then accelerated that lesson at human speed to teach Frieren the same lesson she made epiphany onto him. Though her original teacher, whose name I forget probably gave her that value as well. In the end. Serie is a douche, and Frieren is not 'Serie without Himmel', she was in fact a better person than Serie even before Himmel. Serie would have ignored Himmel as unimportant, or would have taken advantage of his desperation to make him into a living weapon, even if not an evil weapon, just a weapon for neutrality's weaponry's sake.

I keep hearing everyone reference “slice of life” to describe a lot of Dandadan’s emotion outside of the action. I’d go so far as to respectfully disagree. It’s taken things a step further and amalgamated the slice of life genre with shonen jump style action. It’s something else. Spice of Life or something might be a better description. It’s too cohesive with multiple genres at once to not be something in its own right.

That was a great analysis thank you episode 5 is my favourite from about 4.05 min in till they switch to grannies house is in my opinion one of best pieces of cinema I’ve ever seen your analysis makes me sort of understand why it moves me so much

Magic in Sousou no Frieren's world is limited by imagination. And by that criteria Serie is the lesser mage. She can only imagine greatest of power, the highest of efficiency to be the eptimoe of magic or anything. And she completely misses the "true magic" of what can change the world is the acccumulation of the smallest and ephermeral of things, like small act of kindess and something seemingly as fleeting as connections. Great act power to enforce one's will be it for good or ill, likely provoke equal resistance. like Himmel & Co. defeated the Demon King, a great feat of power if there is one but eventually the demon remnant came back in force. But what built the peace and last longer are the small acts of kindness and connections that inspired the Starks and Wirbels of the worlds. Serie's lack of imagination does not see that.

The best part is that we get a manga chapter tomorrow on Monday
