January Garden update
This is the time to start thinking about all the planting that needs to be done once it gets warmer, dividing Bamboo (as usual) as well as trim some of the storm damage we have had in the garden. Seeing that it is only January, there are a few more storms to come, I just hope they will be milder ones that one the ones we have had.

Coleus update just after 2 months amazing how they have grown.

Wrapping my Musa Basjoo for the winter, with either bags full of Leaves or stuffed car tyres
Просмотров 171Месяц назад
Same procedure as every year, after the first frost my Basjoo gets wrapped with a load of leaves, which I use as mulch next year and it is also a “excuse” to clean up the garden from all the leaves. Everything will be reused even the plastic bags
How to propagate Anthurium through division

There is nothing better than multiplying your plants for free, especially when it is as easy as it is with Anthurium, have a shower together, look at the root stock and start teasing apart, this is how easy it is.
Harvesting Jerusalem Artichokes

The first year I ever grew Jerusalem Artichokes / Sun Chokes, and I am quite amazed with eh plant, they look good as they grow and flower, also known as wild sunflower, and they taste great too. Something I will grow from now on.
Preparing my Canna Lilies to go into the basement for the winter.

It is the same every year, digging up my Cannas, drying them off for about 1 week and then dumping them in a box with wood shavings (the kind you use for pets) and then leave them in the basement. Another way to keep your cannas is through seed propagation ruclips.net/video/Cjy36cq98wY/видео.html

Controlling running bamboo with a Spade & Rhizome Trench

I control my Running Bamboos with 3 different methods, Rhizome barrier, Rhizome trench and with a spade.... The Spade version is especially “funny”, it is a lot of work but it gets me to understand the growing pattern of bamboo better, which can be exciting and scary at the same time
Santa Rosalia Lake and Life Resort

This is an amazing place, while it is still being build, you can see what it will be in a few years. It already offers a lot to do, from chilling at the Lake / Lagoon, the beach bar or the Restaurant. There is a Gym, bike trail and loads of walking paths, the resort is near Los Alcazares, which is a lovely town, with everything you need and more.
How to propagate coleus

About the Banana, the one in the Video is the bigger one, the other one is more like yours 😂. have a super time on your Vacation, I cannot wait for all the indoor planting to start. Hello Jochen!! Happy December! I think a great big bushy Coleus will look beautiful in a nice large planter. I think you're convincing me. I'm not thinking too much about plants right now because we've been absolutely buried in snow this past week. Not so much cold but tons and tons of snow. That's the fun of living in the Great Lakes basin. 'Lake effect snow'....'snow squalls'...'white outs'. 😨😩🌨 Thank gawd we booked out winter getaway a couple weeks ago. It's gonna be the only thing to get me through this. Looking forward to starting planting seeds in Jan/Feb. My banana seems to be doing okay since I brought it in. It's missing the sun tho. About the coleus, there was a time I thought " I rather roll around naked in a field of nettles than have a coleus in my garden" well these times are over, they are great plants (the rolling around I might do one day anyway😂), I completely get that you are so looking forward to your Vacation. we are going to Janes Parents for a few days around Christmas. about the behaving ... Do you know how to differentiate it from the Heteroclada ? My neighbourg has a "mud" bamboo along the river, it has a hole in the rizhomes so i know it's a "mud" bamboo but i'm still not sure what specie. I'm thinking of Atrovaginata or Heteroclada. It's dark green so i think it's an Heteroclada but i'm not sure, the Atrovaginata seem more like clear green. The first year the culms feel like sand paper when you touch them from bottom to top.

The first year culms have the white “powdery” line on the node. That would be the only way I can think of just now. have a look and let me know.

Have a good week you two! Isn't it crappy to have to wear so many clothes now?? Miss my flip flops already.

    Hello J!!!! Sorry not to have been around for a bit. Been crazy busy. I couldn't miss this one though. One of my favorite plants. I've harvested (aka stolen) lots of seeds this fall. All kinds of colors!! The are so easy and so beautiful to grow. I'm gonna put them everywhere next year. For now...I gotta run. Hope you two are well. Take care of each other and enjoy every day! T

      Hi T, all good, I totally get it, I have been so busy as week with spending 2 weeks a month in Istanbul really cuts into any Gardening or other work 🙂, But I am glad I got my Cannas out of the ground because I don't want to lose them again. I haven't stolen and canna seeds so far, but I did bring a few Coleus cuttings back from Spain and they are doing so well, my next obsession. all is good with us and I hope you guys are well too. Jochen 🙂

      @@jochen.allardice-grein Busy time of year for us. We get the cottage closed up and winterized and then have to get everything winterized at the house before the snow hits. We didn't have a lot last year at all but they say we'll make up for it this year. 😮‍💨 We're already planning a sunny getaway this winter. It's all so fricken expensive!! It must be a little crazy having to spend so much time away from home for work. What do you do anyway?? I retired from the automotive business a few years ago and Chris is still working in it. I will have to be making a decision on what to do with my cannas pretty soon, last year we left half in the ground which all came back but really late in the year and half we dug up and put into dry compost pots, which froze in the poly and lost all but one! So maybe its time to do what Jochen does. Thanks for the advice!

    • @jochen.allardice-grein

      @mrchuffy6535 I lost all of mine 2 years ago because i moved the pots into the shed, and I was going to take the cannas out but forgot about them and by the time I remembered they all died. About the late growing, it is the same if you put the stored rhizomes straight I to the ground after the last frost, they take ages to get going, this is why I start them off in the house about 4 - 6 weeks before they go out to give them a head start. Pain in the arse to have them all in the house but wilorth when you see them in their pots. Let me know how you are getting on

    So I’ve got some more info about a client that has bamboo, he wants it removed completely to put a rockery down. The few details I’ve been given about it is 1. It’s about 10 ft tall, 2. It has thin canes, 3. The bamboo canes are yellow and most importantly it is a clumpier by what he thinks. I’m ready to start the job as soon as he lets me see it. Is there any info I can give him that he’s gonna need to know

    • @jochen.allardice-grein
      @jochen.allardice-grein 2 месяца назад

      He doesn’t need any info, he is not taking it out hahahah, the information I can give you is. If it is a clumper it could be Fargesia Murielae (Umbrella bamboo) they have yellow canes, I have a few of them and the rhizomes are tight. I recently bought a reciprocating saw, and I can tell you it makes the whole removal so much easier.(ruclips.net/video/uTXAISHgdes/видео.html) it is still a big job and pain in the arse... but it does make it a little easier.

    • @drefhill
      @drefhill 3 месяца назад

      the Vivax get thick very fast. But it has thin walls so it's weak and can't be used for building things. The shoots are great to eat so it's a good bamboo for food. And for it's look of course. A neighbourg have them at 7cm wide. Vivax aureosulcata (the one with random green lines). It doesn't run to crazzy if you give it enough space to grow freely.

      I planted this one about 5 Years ago and this year was the first time that it had that 7 meter tall and thick cane, BUT it started its life in my Garden as just a rhizome, no cane, so it really was a start from scratch ... so to say 😂

  • @drefhill
    @drefhill 3 месяца назад

    4:27 the japonica is easy to keep under control. I have mine under control without trench, i just cut the grass around, it doesn't try shooting further than 1-2m away and when you cut the shoots (which are always small) it doesn't try again for the year. But with the trench it's even easier and safer 👍.

    • @jochen.allardice-grein
      @jochen.allardice-grein 3 месяца назад

      @drefhill it really is, it is one of my favourite running bamboo, it grows so shallow which is easy with a trench.
