    Not surprising really, most once respected UK brands are now owned by foreign businesses or the brand names licensed out playing on the 'British tradition' to make sales.

    Most of us can agree that there are some products over-priced. But you were NOT harsh. There are so many more costs that a company has, it would take pages to list them all. And what about the costs to the person making the "same thing" for 1/10th the cost: while the indignant tinkerer spends months researching, ordering and building, the purchaser has been enjoying music. And, if there is a problem with the purchased equipment, I have a guarantee. I don't have to get out a soldering iron, clear the dining room table for a week or three, discover I am out of the silver solder, or find, remove, order, install a part. What if that wasn't the entire problem? Also, I won't burn myself or the table yet again on the dammed soldering iron. I take it back to the dealer or UPS it back to the mfr. And go on with my life. What's the $ value of your time? Finally, maybe your self-built is 80% as good, but it will rarely sound 100% as good. Have you purchased the mfr.-made unit to directly compare? [I have no affiliation with any audio co.]

    Γεια σou από την Ελβετία. I previously had my KEF Reference Three-Two's on spikes, spike-shoes on oak parquet flooring on a concrete floor. Now I have washing machine anti-vibration feet from Amazon (two per speaker corner - 8 per speaker, 16 altogether - about $32.- ) and I must say that the improvement was mind blowing. The high frequencies were suddenly liberated and extended with MUCH more energy, the mid-range freed up and the bass less muddy, much tighter. What inspired me to do this was seeing the RUclips video of Max Townshend who was demonstrating floor transmission from and back into loudspeakers. Of course Townshend sells the Seismic isolation podium (seismos is Greek!) which I am sure perform excellently but are out of my price range. The next tweak I made was to elevate my loudspeaker cables from the floor, They are now on 17 cm oak risers and in my high resolution system, I can hear faster transients and more extended extreme treble. I made them in my workshop with left-over scraps of oak. Cost to me: zero. All the best, Rob in Switzerland. Χαιρετισμούς από την Ελβετία

    Reading about the Stack Audio products, I was introduced to the MPID ( Multi Particle Isolation Dampers ). This technology dated from 1937 and there are a lot of white papers on studies by many universities. It's used in aviation, industrial buildings, space technology and more. I made my own MPI devices. I gave some to a friend too. The results are amazing and they cost a fraction of the real ones. The results are similar to the ones I read about in many reviews. They are basically aluminum , metal bearings or tungsten powder and the EQ used a silicone material. All parts were from Amazon. There is science behind those and the white papers talked about it. Took me a month reading and gathering information common to every study. At the end, the results are what matter to me and the economy of doing them.

      @@KeithSkronek Hi Keith - I ALWAYS agree everyone needs to try for themselves. In my past experience with padded carpets speakers quickly settle into the padding under the cushion and they are soon resting on the sub floor. I can't say for sure, but with the WF's being so low vs. other products I think you'd be OK. But I agree you need to try for sure.

Concrete slab was way out of level necessitating the sandboxes so I could level both speakers to the sitting position. There is a 3/4 inch wool rug for most of the room as well. The bottom of the sandboxes are polished and waxed 16 gauge steel so I can slide the whole 110 lb. thing around to wherever I want. I don't think I need the gaias but still experimenting.

    Great review Michael. Very powerfully positive. You mentioned several strengths, but I still wish I were clearer which acoustical qualities soooo emotionally connected with you. Am super glad to hear you’ll be reviewing several other pricey competitors and am very very much looking forward to comparisons. Will the Tobians still so clearly crown your list? You said you’re a fan of (well done) horns. Have you heard any of the Volti Audio models? Every review I’ve seen has been stellar. And Volti’s are always three-way, so a different approach than Tobian’s two-ways. Thnx again

No worries - I have more videos coming on this and the other speakers as I will be doing more videos but shorter in length going forward.

    Powerfully positive review Michael. Loved every word. Good horns are noted for their great dynamics, both micro & macro. You mentioned dynamics with these speakers, but more in passing. Would you say dynamic differentiation is one of their comparative strengths? You mention you love horns. Wondering whether you’ve heard a Volti Audio model, or whether one is in your waiting list?? Many reviewers have given Voltis top ratings. They’re always three-way, so a clearly different approach. Would be SUPER curious to learn what you think of them. Thanks again, Kurt

      Hi Kurt - thanks for the kind words. I've heard Volti's in show settings so I can't do a direct comparison that is fair or meaningful. The dynamics of the Tobian's are tremendous. On the Frank Sinatra song I use as a reference when the orchestra kicks in behind him it goes from 0 - 1000mph in a split second. It's fantastic. On opera music I find the singers seem much more effortless and powerful when they really belt out the music. And on vocal trance they make you feel like you are at the best club venue. The only think I have ever heard that I can even compare in terns of dynamics are the MUCH large and MUCH MUCH more expensive Avant Garde's. I can't get over how small these speaker are (relatively speaking) and how super large the sound is. Love is an understatement.

    Thanks for the video. I've got modded La Scala speakers and never realized what they could do until I put a stupidly expensive pair of ICs (Shunyata Omega) from preamp to monoblocks and very good speaker cables as well. Everything from chamber music to prog now sounds insanely immersive, fully transparent and the imaging is as good as anything I've heard, including Focal, Wilson, Acapella, Audio Note, Vandersteen and more. I clearly hear the clacking of according keys, piano benches creaking, musicians breathing, it's just so natural. Caveat: I do use a sub, but the frequency balance is beyond anything I've achieved with some very good components over the years: APL, Lamm, Wright Sound, Audio Research, etc. I find the heritage Klipsch--with the cast iron horn--sounds considerably richer than the polycarbonate versions. Really glad you love these. Your coverage in the video is super informative. If a speaker sounds compressed, I find it impossible to connect with it. I've never been moved by Tannoy, but would love to hear the Fyne. One of my SET monoblocks is 4W 2A3. Can these be driven with that little power? Thanks again!

    • @GreekAudioGeek
      @GreekAudioGeek 3 дня назад

      Thanks for watching! They can easily be driven with that power ASSUMING you are not trying to play rave-like levels. Stay tuned as I also have several more speakers being sent to me in that price range as well.

      @@GreekAudioGeek cool. Yes, have been playing with speaker pitch/angles. so many variables...ear height, seating distance, etc. oh...just ordered a set of carbide audio feet to demo. Should be very interesting.

      Feet on these speakers will make a HUGE difference. I've tired four so far but not those. Let me know how you like them. Here is a tip from what I've discovered- if they are a bit bright they are aiming to high. If they are a bit dull and lifeless they are too low.

    I'd live to hear your take on how the mids and highs compare to the La Scala.. I am just going to presume bass is much lower in these. 4" compression driver is a big diameter driver. Did the build it in-house or outsource it?

    • @GreekAudioGeek
      @GreekAudioGeek 9 дней назад

      My understanding is everything is either completely built in house or they bring in a shell of a driver (like the woofer) and them completely rebuild it to their specs (I base this off comments read on a forum bu the company owner but I may be mistaken). The La Scala has good upper mids and highs. I say good. It is let down by a horrible cabinet that has so much resonance that lower mids are very boxy and chesty sounding. The mids and highs from the Tobian's are MUCH smoother, clearer, more effortless and FULL of texture and emotion the La Scala's lacked. Same with the bass on the Tobains -full of texture and emotion the La Scala's lacked (as do many speakers to be honest). The La Scala's offer a lot of speaker for the money for sure. But they are really, really really let down by their cabinet and once you hear the Tobain's you realize (and I don't say this to be negative) how the La Scala's are mid-fi speakers. I will also say I thought the La Scala's sounded large, but the Tobian's are every bit as large sounding and maybe even more so. The Tobians are an other-worldly experience I was not prepared for.

    Thank you for sharing. I’ve been contemplating buying the La Scala AL5’s for over a year now for the exact same reason you mentioned. But, after receiving glowing reviews of this speaker I’m considering buying this instead. I’m just scared to give up the huge sound stage that the La Scala brings out.

    Mike, noticed you mentioned “hours of break in”. The Pulsar in particular requires over a 1000hrs of music play. Pulsar owners have experienced a huge waking event at around 5-6 weeks. After full break-in the Pulsar sound’s like it has had sonic testosterone injection. Personally, I’ve never experienced this leap of improvement after 45 days of break in from any audio component.

      Thank you David. The unit was a demo so I know it had use prior to me receiving it though I am not sure how much. I agree with you that break in is SUPER important. My Aqua La Scala tube tube DAC for instance needed close to 600 hours before it hit its groove.
