I'm from Yorkshire as well (typing properly so as non-Yorkshires can understand what I'm on about). I moved from my hometown (also in Yorkshire) to the next one along for work and had to develop a phone voice so the clients of the company I worked for in the snooty parts could understand what I was saying on the phone. When a couple of my old schoolfriends heard me speak a while later, they said I'd "turned posh". I haven't, I just talk a bit less broad than I did at school.
But Yorkshire is proper English 😁

Oh this is glorious! As a proud person from Barnsley, this is the closest I've heard anyone online to our specific brand of Yorkshire dialect (the proper one, I'll add). Only difference is his version of a breadcake is a Teacake in Barnsley, but let's not get into all those different words for the same piece of bread! Well done mi' old
Teacake!
Me , lancashire , n mi neice , Yorkshire, have this performance . I,ll tell yer , its called a MUFFIN ! Chip muffin or I,ll let yer av chip butty . But a butty is a slice er bread . 😊
your accent is much broader than mine. Also I think men in Yorkshire say things to each other in a way women don't. I agree with the teacake comment. Maybe that's a West Yorkshire term rather than a South Yorkshire one.
I remember my grandfather’s friend lived near the North Yorkshire moors and he spoke in dialect. Now that was unbelievable for even a Yorkshire man like me to understand!!
Marvellous flower, nice to hear someone speaking clean English. Thee hav a gooden 💋
Born an bred in Yorkshire, I am a long term expat in Canada. I cannot recall any encounter with another Yorkshire man, along my way, but numerous other UK accents. As a native I can usually figure out what the hell is being said. Partly due to pronunciation, with the venacular giving the meaning away. I live in one of the most glorious places in the world, yet I would make a deal with the devil, so I could return home.
Born and raised in rural Indiana, US, and have traced my ancestry to the Yorkshire area. I long to visit someday. I love the Yorkshire people 😊
we call it a cob.....we say alrate me duck
how am ya 😅🤣
In Coventry we call them a “batch” 🍔
T. cake in Holmfirth, West Yorks.
i was asked many years ago, when i worked at a Co-op late shop up North. A man came up to the Cigarette kiosk, where i was working that day. and said " Have you got time on you Cock?" to which i replied, quick-wittedly "No, i've got it on my wrist, like everyone else". 🤣
great video do more
Wakey lass it's a bread cake or tea cake. And a butty.
Team breadcake
You only have to watch an episode of Coronation Street in order to hear a Yorkshire accent.
Bread cake
Just spent a 2 week holiday in Yorkshire. LOVED IT. Can't wait to go back next year. THANK YOU.
My favourite of the Brit regional accents!
I’m in Lancashire and use most these sayings and miss the out alot lol but it’s a tea cake 😅
It's a teacake. As ne fule kno. I'm from Castleford by the way. Frame thysen.
If someone says that they are going to "brain" you, run. "Me Mams gonna brain us when a ge' 'ome".
I'm from Bradford Yorkshire , and we call it a Tea cake.
I am an East Anglian and married a Yorkshire woman so that makes ( meks) me an expert. Good things about Yorkshire: they have a reputation for being mean but l think it’s that they like and expect value for money. You always get decent portions of things for example. They are very direct which l appreciate, so you know where you stand. And unlike a lot of British people they are not embarrassed by talking about money (brass). Fundamentally they are very honest and straightforward. The bad side is being rude and making out it was a joke; stubborn; being awkward and proud of it- the Tyke thing. Yorkshire people will not know how to respond to this by having a go at me as the average Yorkshire persons knowledge of East Anglia is zero. So to help, here’s a clue: we are boring.
Fish and chips with bits on
T cake 😂 west Yorkshire
Ger in t'caar
Aye but that's only one part of Yorkshire. Give ozz the rest, cock.
breadcake is called a roll in southern US
I’m gonna go buy some fish and chips wi bits and a buttered teacake. Yorkshire accent is not that hard to understand apart from’t chuffs and tuts.
😂😂😂 agreed 👍
Hoped you might have covered the word couldn't... lived in Yorkshire all my life & I mostly hear it pronounced c*nt. "You c*nt a'done that even if yer'd wanted to"
A'reet?
In Haworth it's a tea cake. If the teacake has currants in it it's a currant tea cake. Mind you, in Haworth, Keighley and some of the surrounding area you can get a scone from the chip shop. Being, two slices of potato filled with fish and battered in the fryer. It's a local thing. I've heard them called cakes and fish cakes. Onyroad, ere they're scones. Oh and A tea cake is a tea cake.
This is an underrated channel I happen to come across, where are you mate, keep posting if you still laugh like you did
That made me laugh, thanks blue
In Holmwood Bradford were i was living. growing up. A greeting is like this. Aye up mi chaver mush. Or Aye up mi lad ows it going.
I was in sheffield for 5 yrs and i love yorkshire accent❤❤❤
in the US, there are some similarities to a particular type of small town Mississippi accent like Forrest Gump. Tom Hanks modeled the accent on the real speech of the boy that played Forrest as a child. He demonstrated it on Graham Norton once. The long vowels, common in many southern dialects, plus similar pitch changes and rhythms, and the "ng" as in strong sounding like strong-guh.
The Yorkshire accent and dialect vary so much depending which Riding you are from (the old boundaries before 1974,north ,west and east ridings ,there was no south riding of Yorkshire ) I'm from North riding of Yorkshire we call it a bread bun here ,you must be from the west by the way you speak,
I grew up in Virginia calling your breadcake a roll, although most people call it a bun, I believe.
Regarding “The” usage. Interestingly York aka Yarvik was a Viking settlement back in the day. In Danish and other Scandinavian languages “the” is a part of the noun by adding the suffix “en”. It may well be the case that as Old Norse speakers in Yarvik transitioned into Old English they merged the old with the new forming the dialect where saying the noun was enough to understand it was “the” noun. I would think there are linguists that have this as an area of study.
