Bro basically just admitted to zerking too much
It is sad to see people in this comment section come across as obstinate children in their attempts to brush off Riker's perspective by becoming ultra-analytical (and, in some cases, nigh-edgy) and _entirely_ missing the wisdom on display.
Nothing makes me laugh more than seeing Morn have that confused look on his face with his sad lips.
Great Scene Great Episode....Armin Shimerman Played Quark With Captivating Assurance
This is the equivalent of telling a girl you've been constantly masturbating 😂
very true
Voyagers Doctor: I shall do no harm Beverly in Picard S3 "die! Die! DIE!!!" *pew pew pew*
Tuvok loves to have fun.
😂
A Ferengi with a strong right hand is doing more than counting his latinum - Rule of Acquisition #123
Big loss war game is this
Chess peace loose player 5 dollars
I swear, the older I get, the more I appreciate the intellectual depth of the writing from the old Trek series. This short little clip, a throw away scene really, brings human emotions into such profound focus, asking questions that people are often uncomfortable with.
I like the implications here. The Doctor is an artificial being with the Hippocratic Oath probably in the very core of his programming. However, the way I see this is, he feels shame from having hurt his shipmates. He cites the oath here to remind himself that, whatever personal pursuits he has, it must never compromise his primary function.
I love that Morn is listening in.
The more input and data accumulated from someone the bigger the loss is felt when that data input is ended.
Any scene with Morn is made instantly better.
"I'll be doing fine" *BECOMES GRAND NAGUS*
Rule of Acquisition #101: If you lose an employee, then make them a paying customer... and charge them extra.
Poor Tuvok. I know what it’s like to share a home with someone you can’t stand.
Ask not for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee.
Is is truly that we feel grief because of the absence of a person or is it that we feel the absence of their value. So in truth, we do feel the loss of all people equally not because of familiarity, but we feel loss for those, even strangers, that brought us value. Oh ST:TNG. You got so close to the answers, but still missed the mark by a mile.
Riker’s last line here is, imo, the best line in TNG, possibly the best line in all of Star Trek. It invites us, each of us, to do better, to develop empathy.
This is real star trek. Period. only some fans get it.
That's when Quark realized that Rom has finally grown-up.
The conversations that Data had were always sone of the most profound and thought provoking. The writing was beautiful and the acting especially by Brent was beautiful.
Well, it is only natural that we should ask "how well did you know" someone who died. We do, after all, add the wisdom and any experience they may have had to our personal data pool. It is not disrespectful! It actually honors the dead. It propagates their legacy.
Now compare to Nu-Trek.
She didn't die, my wife is currently being illegally kept from contacting me (her calls to me fail), which is verified by the fact that my friends visiting me in person also have their calls fail, they're like "why can't I reach you by phone or messenger", well, it's because I'm escalating my wife's exploitation case to the White House so obviously federal agencies aren't going to let anyone call me, let alone my wife. Instead of solving the issue, a lot of people are thinking "How can I murder her without it being murder". I knew my wife for about two and a half years before we finally got married. We knew each other well enough to get married, that's enough information for anyone. It's interesting that people are still asking "How can I murder him without it being murder though" rather than "How can I stop being braindead and add a firewall exception so she can call him". Being braindead has no bounds and is of no benefit to anyone. Wake up and do the right thing already, I'm tired of this crap.
Funny thing is, Rom was actually being more of a capitalist than he had been under Quark, whom he remained working for out of obligation to an older brother; i.e. feudalism.
The image is cropped so badly it makes it unwatchable.
You need to be able to pick and choose. Decision paralysis endangers more lives. Not saves them. Data, an android, should understand this intuitively so well that it disturbs organics.
I think Kes should have stayed when Seven came on board. They might learn from one another.
Agreed. She was a good character. They should have jettisoned Neelix instead.
Evolution is a zero sum game. Right now it may not seem like it, because of mass production. But sooner or later we will match the production.
It should have been called the Imhopic Oath.
interesting to see this clip after just watching season 3 episode 163 yesterday's enterprise. giving meaning to tasha's death was poetic
BIG FACES! LOL! 🤪 Aspect ratios are important. 😉
That would require us to become something else, something inhuman.
They really trusted that robot makeup in these shots huh
I thought of this scene in Picard season 3 when Riker finds "Data".
Data's story shows us that there is not just one way to be human. Being human is not via an on/off switch. the human condition is a spectrum, of which, we may at any time occupy any point upon .
No, that is ridiculous. Suppose I had a friend (in some universes that might be possible) and I have done things with this friend several times a week for the last 40 years and then this friend suddenly dies. Okay, in one sense, the world is back to normal and I now have no friends, but that is clearly a huge loss in my life. On the other hand, there could be a guy with the exact same birthdate who lives two blocks away from my friend, but I have never met. Their death impacts my life not at all, if I even hear about it. Not to mention all of the other people on the planet. 116 die per minute (on average) or 166,859 per day. All of them are going to matter as much to me as my parents, or my brother, or my friends? No, they don't, they can't, and they shouldn't.
wow, just like a communist, makes a mess, doesn't clean it up, takes the profits from it and abandons his people for a safer position.
The old Star trek shows are so thought provoking! I love it, and wish the new star trek shows were as deep in their writing.
No man is an island, Entire of itself. Each is a piece of the continent, A part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less. As well as if a promontory were. As well as if a manor of thine own Or of thine friend's were. Each man's death diminishes me, For I am involved in mankind. Therefore, send not to know For whom the bell tolls, It tolls for thee.
Man. Why can’t we keep getting this quality Star Trek? Instead we get explosion after explosion and idiots being referred to as dips-**ts. Capitalism literally destroys anything and everything good
How well did you know Lieutenant Aster? "He, he he, he um....."
One of the best things to come out of DS9’s entire series run, was the sincere commitment to developing Quark, Rom and Nog(more so with Nog and Rom); but then, even more to make up for individual character development with those three, the actual attention to the evolution of their relationship as a family, Father, Son and Uncle(Brother). It’s legit heartwarming to see how much they have grown from where all 3 of them started as a family-- 2nd to Sisko’s relationship with Jake, and his relationship with Kasidy.
"Send not to ask for whom the bell tolls, it tolls for thee." - John Donne "For Whom the Bell Tolls" (if memory serves)
I feel the reason why losing someone close to us hurts more than the loss of a stranger is because we notice more of what was lost because we know of the things that are gone while a stranger we dont know is a name or face at most. Someone we know we notice the loss of face and name but also their voice, thier hopes and dreams, their fears and history, etc. its the loss of potential future. The loss of a child is more tragic than an adult because that child had so many possibilities ahead while the adult while still holding possibilities has alot less as they have narrowed their futures even if just by existing longer.
Thankyou for sharing your thoughts, I found what you had to say valuable and insightful.
