End of summer we find wax moth larva in our hive. What should we do?
installing an underground water tank.
Просмотров 7 тыс.4 года назад
We live on a 7 acre farm, and our well has very slow water flow. Our demand for a steady supply of water has increased. We will install 1,000 gallon tank underground to ensure a dependable supply of water in case of drought conditions.

DIY Mushroom Project - Preparing Sawdust Medium for Shiitake Mushroom Inoculation
Whats the latest conclusion on this compost system? what was the biggest range of temperature on the coldest winter nights?... Also did you ever add a fan?
So both ends are in the greenhouse? Is that how it's done it's a big circle more or less
Porce. No. Te acercas mas
Both our hives didn't make it this winter...so happy that a wild swarm moved in!
Both our hives did not make it last winter. We cleaned them out, and surprise! 2 new hives moved in!
If you sterilized the spawn bag "...the other day" it's not sterile. It's just not.
Can you use aspen?
I'm thinking of taking a large tank an filling it with steam to treat a larger quantity of sawdust. The Pan in the video looks too small for any serious quantity of mushrooms. In
Why the plastic bags ? Couldn't the steam pan just be filled with sawdust ? And the bagging done later ?
I don't get the pressure cooker bit... Is this to fully moisturise the sawdust ? Or is there some other reason ?
It's to kill every bacteria and fungi already present in the sawdust mixture. The pressure cooker can raise the temperature above "normal" 100°C to cook, at 15PSI the temperature will be around 121°C
What chemicals make up the disinfectant ?
Why does the sawdust have to be subjected to 15psi steam pressure for 2 hours ?
Why wheat bran ? What function does it serve please ?
Nutrition
awesome video. Thank you
Can you use rye instead of wheat bran?
You just made a BOMB...OMG.

Did you put something on top of the top bags?
Good idea.
Curious as to why you didn't add insulation to the greenhouse and surrounding the compost pile to help with heat being lost to the outside. reading and watching to see what I may do when I can start a greenhouse structure.
Tray Jean Pain composting...
Seems you have done a lot of research into this project, congrats.....I did not see if the leaves (leafs?) had been shredded so that they break down easier to decompose and help make heat...
Yes leaves were shredded. Unfortunately it's not giving off a lot of heat. We haven't found an efficient way to turn it, aerate it, without damaging the drainage tile in it.
Check out the gentleman in Nebraska that is growing oranges there in the winter months...
Yes...we loved that video. We are planning to build a walipini on the side of our hill so we could try growing zone 9-12 plants.
This video is what not to do
We have decided to do cold sterilization with lime. A lot easier and efficient.
Yes, little by little, people will move to self-sustainable methods of living.
Agreed. If people live out west, this will be essential for any type of residential and agricultural practices.
It's January and 10 degrees outside, 50 degrees inside!
It's 10 degrees outside and 50 degrees in the green house...awsome!
Glad to see this comment! I was wondering about an update.
your going to blow your house up,you need to put plate over bags,so vents don't get plugged with plastic bags
Yes, we corrected that. We now use mostly the cold alkaline pasteurizing method now.
so what is the flow of your well that you require a cistern? Why did you decide to go with a poly tank instead of a concrete tank. What are you using for a pump and pressure tank.
so no video for your level controls or pump setups?
The water flow from the well is about 3 gal/min. We have high demand for water especially in the summer for irrigation of over 100 trees, and organic produce production. The plastic tank was more convenient, easier to install.
We used a standard 3/4 horsepower pump, and 50 gallon equivalent pressure tank with a standard 30/50 psi pressure switch which pulls out of the tank instead of the well.
The tank is potable water rated.
Why not just use a stelie spoon to stir?
Some hand sanitizers can cause cancer
We use 95% isopropyl alcohol to sterilize gloves and equipment.
Any videos with all steps till we can eat/sell the Shitakis?
We get better results using shitaki logs, check out our video from last fall.
plastic is not good for health。better not to use it to grow vegetable and make compose。better to use food safe glass to make compose and use clay pot to grow vegetable。any plastic will leak some chemicals into the soil when it under high temperature under the sun or put acid or alkali or salty in it or put something in it for long time。 plastic can not stand high heat. all toxin will leak into the mushroom grow bag.
That is correct, we are now using mostly cold alkaline pasteurization, so less plastic toxins in the mushroom substrate.
Awesome setup, I believe adding liquid nitrogene composting stuff to your leaf will boost the temp by a few degrees for sure ! Can't wait for spring too !
We add concentrated chicken and pig manure to the pile, it definitely will increase the temp.
YOUR PRESSURE COOKER IS DANGEROUSLY OVER FULL, IF THE TOP BAGS COVER THE VENT YOU WILL HAVE A BOMB.
Yes, next batch, we put fewer bags in there and put a porous metal plate on top. Thanks!
this is f*cking crazy, you are creating a huge bomb by allowing those bags to touch the top of your canner & blocking the pressure release vent. I wonder how many people have followed your directions and blown up their kitchen or even died doing this. a little something to watch ruclips.net/video/m3CkOunk8fY/видео.html
Why do all those sterilizing steps and then use a unsterile measuring cup to measure your spawn?
We corrected that, thanks!
how are your bees doing now?
They are all cozy, tucked in for the winter. We did not see too many more wax moth larva. I added some sugar cake in case they don't have enough honey to last the winter. We added a straw bale barrier around each hive, to cut down on prevailing winds. I really hope they make it to spring!
@@ramblingrosebudfarm2744 I had a friend that had wax moths and his hive did good the next spring. I will pray yours does the same. I like the ideal of straw bales to cut down on the wind!!! That is a great ideal!!! Thanks for the update...
There are no non-toxic remedies we know of. We only see a few wax larva, so we will carefully monitor the hive, and hope the bees will take care of it themselves.
What is the smoke? What is a nuc? Tell me more. Very interesting!! xoxo
The smoke is to calm the bees, a nuc contains a fertile queen bee, five frames already colonized with brood and honey, a nice jump start to get a new hive going. We will have a part two in the fall, look at how much honey is stored, make sure there are no diseases or parasites.
It's like a bee unboxing! Love the suits! 😂
It is very exciting! We will have a part two in the fall to see if there are any parasites, and enough honey stored for the winter.
Abby, the Hugelkulture is growing like gangbusters! I will be posting some video of the garden in August. Corn is over 10 ft tall!
Hi, I realy loved your video, I would like to know how the mushrooms turned out? How much does one bag yield?
We had great results! We have expanded with king, snow, gray and pink oysters. My favorite is lions mane, but seems to be harder to get the right conditions.
Any chance you shared the videos through to the progress?
be careful with bags potentially blocking the vent/ports. I place another rack on the top of bags before placing the lid on. happy mushrooming!
Yeah man. They need to put something on the top of those bags, all it would take is a bag to block the pressure port and kabam they made a steam bomb in their kitchen. Super dangerous.
Thanks, we will do that. Btw, we have been using the lime cold sterilization technique, don't use the pressure cooker any more.
@@ramblingrosebudfarm2744 did you make a video on that?
Any problems with contamination yet? Or have you been lucky in that regard?
Yes we get contamination, but it's pretty random. We are using the cold lime technique, and get about the same amount of contamination.
Awesome!!!
What a fascinating method of farming, I've learned so much! Can't wait to see what else you two do!
We are planting a new regenerative fruit orchard...stay tuned!
