Little Missouri Falls and Crooked Creek Falls in the Ouachita Wilderness
With miles and miles of backroads in the Albert Pike area of the Ouachita Wilderness, there are so many areas to hike and things to see. But for anyone that's never visited the area, a drive along Crooked Creek to see Crooked Creek Falls and Little Missouri Falls is a must. These are two impressive waterfalls that are very easy to see. Little Missouri Falls is a short 0.25-mile walk on an easy trail. And Crooked Creek Falls is not a hike at all. That one can be seen from the road.
In the Crooked Creek segment of the video, I mis-spoke and called Crooked Creek "Caney Creek". This is because when looking at Google maps, where Albert Pike Rd meets Nfw 539 Rd, you'll see the words "Caney Creek...

Hiking the Second Route to the Arkansas Sphinx

There are two parking areas and two routes that can be taken to reach this Ozark spectacle. In this video, we show you the route from parking area #2, which is the longer route. Either way, the view from the Sphinx is magnificent, and catching it during peak Fall color is best. For all the details on this hike, including GPS coordinates, Google map, and hiking tips, check out the blog post here...
Hiking at Stem Rock Natural Area in the Southern Ozarks

The hike at Stem Rock Natural Area is a super easy 1.5 mile hike on a mostly flat out-and-back trail. The trail ends at the The Stem Rock area, which is a unique bluff outcropping adorned with a grouping of pedestal rocks and huge rock formations. Located in Searcy County near the communities of Oxley and Leslie, this easy hike is a great one to do in the Fall before the waterfall hiking season...

Floating the Caddo River - Arrowhead (Caddo Gap) to Glenwood
Просмотров 2483 месяца назад
The Caddo River is the premier floating river in the Ouachita region for casual paddlers. For those that don't have the whitewater paddling skill to tackle the Cossatot or Little Missouri Rivers, the Caddo is the place to be. A good argument can be made for the Ouachita River, which has some very scenic stretches. But it doesn't tend to keep a good flow for as long as the Caddo does. A good rel...

Floating War Eagle Creek from Hwy 23 to Hwy 45 is a 13.5-mile float through a beautiful area of Madison County, AR. The duration of this float depends on the flow of the river. For our float, the Hwy 45 gauge read 2.5 ft. At this level, we had pretty good flow. We finished the float in a total of around 7.5 hours. Man that was a nice float man . I do a lot of kayak camping 🏕 trip & i love ❤️ them long mile trips man . This was a nice 10 mile day float . Thanks you so much for sharing this video buddy & MERRY CHRISTMAS to you & your family man .
@mackjenkins7721 thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it. This is definitely a nice day float. But I do recommend getting started a little earlier than we did. It gets a little long at the end. I appreciate the feedback! And Merry Christmas to you and your family too!!!
Weird. When I type this, I can't see what I'm typing because the font is black. I decided to type out my comment in another application, then copy/paste it here. 5:50 I agree that it's not ideal getting to Flatside Pinnacle parking from the Brown Creek area with a car with low clearance, but I've done it in my Prius. I wouldn't do it twice. Haha. The road from Lake Sylvia is not as rough. If I had to go in a smaller vehicle with low clearance, that's how I would go. But I would rather take my wife's Subaru. 7:00 Where you say "Not sure where the trail goes" and your screen note says it's the Ouachita Trail, if you go that way, you are entering the Flatside Wilderness area. 2.5 miles from there, you get to Crystal Prong creek. If you keep going, eventually you will come out at Hwy 7. You can take the OT all the way to Talimena State Park in Oklahoma. In the other direction, you can hike all the way to Pinnacle Mountain just outside of Little Rock. It's a 223 mile trail. I backpacked the whole thing. I recommend it.
@@rungavagairun Thanks for the comment and info on the trail! You're right, the road from Sylvia is definitely a nicer road. Idk why, but for some reason, I just like taking that route by Brown Creek., even though it is kinda sketchy. But it's really pretty. Man, that's awesome you've hiked the whole OT! I'm envious. I'm getting ready to do more overnight and thru hikes like that and OHT, BRT. Looking forward to seeing those areas we can only hike to.
We've hiked to the rising staircase part of Eagle Rock Loop. But not the whole loop, yet.
@cuz129 same here. I was going to do the Eagle Rock Loop this November. I even upgraded my old hiking pack and sleeping bag for the hike. But some family stuff has kept me needing to stay close to home this month. Gonna try to knock that out before the next float season rolls around.
My wife and I started a ten year quest to hike to every waterfall in Tim Ernst's first book. We did Little Missouri falls first on her birthday, it was 30 degrees and raining! Ten years later to the day we did the last one near Waldron Arkansas in eight inches of snow. What a fun quest. We then did all the new falls in Tim's second book!
@cuz129 Wow! That's awesome! You don't meet a whole lot of people that have done ALL the falls in Tim's book. I'm working on the same quest myself, but I started my quest on the 2nd edition of the book. It's slow progress for me though because once it's warm enough to float (late March/early April) I pretty much dedicate the time to float season. I'll get them all checked off one day though!
@AROwnBackyard It took us ten years because I was working. The second book took less than a year because I was retired. It's much easier now, also. We largely had to bushwhack to most of the falls. Now, so many people have taken up the hobby there are "volunteer" trails to most of the falls.
Exelemt video
@dennisniswonger9833 Thank you! And thanks for watching!
Cool
Glad you liked it. Thanks for watching!
Was looking for this rout the other day! Tried to go the normal route and the elevation kicked my butt! May try this route next time.
@HikeAroundandFindOut be sure to watch the whole video or read the blog article. I actually don't recommend this route, at least not right now. I think the normal route is actually easier than this one. This one has twice the amount of elevation change, it's just spread out over 1.17 miles (as opposed to 0.17 miles). It's also extremely overgrown...so much that you lose the trail and have to rely on GPS. Maybe it's better in Winter when the vegetation dies down. Idk, it's just my opinion. But thanks for watching and commenting!
The views were awesome from up top!
@DavidColclasure Yes they are! Thanks for being there, brother! Glad you enjoyed it. Sorry about that ankle though. Makes for a tough hike back down.
Just found your channel and subscribed. Awesome video. Made this trip from Branson many years ago.
@propdoctor21564 wow, thank you! I appreciate the feedback and the sub! Hiking season is upon us, so I'll start having new hiking content coming up soon.
Thanks for the intel! Much appreciated!
@ScottymanPhoto Thanks for watching. This is an old video from years ago...back when I just did short video clips instead of full videos. Also on my old phone that lacked anti-shake video. lol. I need to get back up there and do a new video.
@@AROwnBackyard Yeah, I was just there lining up a composition for later on. Looks like I’m going to have to go back and spend the night. That was a can capture both the sunrise and the sunset. Thanks again!
Beauty and grace. Seems yo got the description gif this place. Just a few too many commercials tho. Great video otherwise.
@robertdiehl1281 Thanks for the feedback. I hear ya with the ads. I'm the same way when I'm watching other people's videos. lol. But the options we have in RUclips Studio for ad frequency is just barely a notch better than on/off, so we don't have a lot of control over it other than turning them off completely. But the tiny bit of revenue I get helps pay for web hosting for the website, and a little gas to go do these things and bring them online for folks to see. I definitely appreciate you tolerating those ads to watch the video. Thanks for the comment!
Great video! What are you filming with ? Camera and mount?
@Familytravelgo Thank you!! When I'm paddling, I film with a GoPro 8 Black, mounted on a headband mount. Other times - when I'm on land walking around, I'm using my Samsung S22+, handheld
Hey! You were in my backyard. :) I've hiked all the trails and off trail at Bluffton. When the water is up, people definitely float the Archey Fork. The Bluff Line Loop (West and East that ties into Azalea Hollow) is my favorite. Something to note: wild hogs are plentiful, especially in the lower levels like Yellowcheek.
@aliciarhae Yeah, I really want to catch Archey Fork when it's floatable. And I plan to go back with my bike to ride some of the other trails. I'll make sure to hit the Bluff Line Loop when I do. Thanks for the warning on the wild hogs, that's good to know!!! Appreciate your comment.
Hi! You said it's not too far from the parking to the water. What is the approximate time if you can remember, please? I'm trying to find a place to set up an overnight camp by that river. Thank you very much!
Hi @MK-qs2jw. Thanks for watching. The first water crossing is Blaylock Creek. It is only a couple hundred yards down the trail from the parking area...so maybe 5 minutes, max. On the other side of the creek are some great spots to camp (where others already have). I've added coordinates to water crossings in my blog post. The link for that is in my initial video description. Thanks for the comment!
AWESOME! 👍
Really enjoy the hiking content from ya! Informative! 🙏
@jessesass1993 Thanks! I'm glad you enjoy it. I appreciate your positive feedback!
Nice .
Did it couple years ago . Don't remember how far but had a great time . Need to do it again.
I would love to tube this. I sent some inexperienced friends down the upper Little River (way down from The Sinks, beneath The Elbow) on some good tubes one time... They had a blast, but were also very angry with me afterwards, lol.
We did that same trip in Late July. One of my favorite places to go.
I'll be back again. I definitely enjoyed it!
Great float. I always try and hit the 11 point once a year. You did miss one pretty nice rapid area just above Riverton.
Cool! I guess I'll just have to go back and float Whitten to Riverton! lol
About to do this trip, buddies will be renting canoes from Wild Bill's but I have my own yak. How did you go about shuttling your personal kayak?
@mattttyp6126 - first thing...this section of the river is currently(as of 8/25/24) floatable, but pretty low. So don't expect the same kind of flow that you see in this video. But to answer your question, I paid Wild Bill's to shuttle my truck to Rush and have it waiting for me. So I drove to Maumee and unloaded, and got on the river. Then Wild Bill's picked up my truck and drove it to Rush, and hid my keys.
Nice fish swims across your bow at 8:20! Carp? Great vid!
@williamkoberick4197 haha, cool that you noticed that! I didn't even see it until I started editing video. It probably was a carp. Thanks for the comment!
. . .just plowing right through everybody's fishing spots. . . .jeeeze
Yeah, we probably should have turned around and paddled back upstream. 🙄
Great vid!!
@GezRogers Thank you my friend!
I love seeing the little red getting some love. Heber is my hometown
@randallgrubbs9286 I grew up in Beebe and spent a lot time around Heber. Really great lake town.
Thats awesome! Just moved to this area. Can’t wait to get on the water there.
@PoppaRyno it's a great area to be in! They just got a huge flood this past week and the Sylamore has already dropped out. Gotta catch it fast! But if you can, it's one of the best!
@@AROwnBackyard heck yeah, it dumped rain hard. I live not far from the Syllamore & Calico Rock Area. We just got done loading up to go yak the White River.
@@AROwnBackyard I’m really wanting to do the North Sylamore.
Curious if you met John Carter owner of Arrowhead ?
Nice find on the waterfall! The one you floated under was cool too!
@Matty-ark thanks man! my favorite part of the float was bluff we paddled under at 6:04. But these were pretty cool too. Thanks for the comment!
Looks like that would be a great trout stream
It definitely looks like it would be in this video. But I doubt there are any. I think it gets too low most of the year for trout to make it. I'm pretty sure it does not get stocked.
One night in 2008 our band rocked Sylamore Creek Campground so hard that we had the creek flowing backwards….I remember seeing the house on top of the mountain flicking it’s lights on and off as we rocked it…I couldn’t see anybody in the crowd but I could hear them…right by the bridge in Allison…I’ll never forget that night…
Where you guys are around 7:30... I'm pretty sure that was where the opening and home scenes were filmed for Where The Red Fern Grows
Cool!!!
Great video man
Thank you! I hope I get a chance to hit this one again!
I do that with the cooler. I don’t take ice. I freeze water bottles for day 2 and 3. Have a few unfrozen for day one.
I fill in the gaps with loose ice. But the frozen bottles definitely last a lot longer!
My own Backyard * Newton County arkansas up above Jasper Newton County arkansas love the Buffalo River..you must know that area too. If not check it out . Pelsor arkansas area has lot's in the area. My hike is everywhere in these mountains .so much Beauty and serenity.
@janinedahl-labbe9220 ohhhh yes! The Pelsor area is where this all began for me. There's so much great hiking around there! I've spent a lot of time hiking and floating around the Upper Buffalo areas from Kingston to Ponca, Compton, and Jasper. It's an outdoors treasure chest!
This looks like a great run for a beginner's trip. Planning on the Buffalo next Spring and your content/videos are the BEST I've found. Thank you for sharing😀
@shelliglasow609 Wow, thanks!!! I appreciate the kind comments! You're right, this one is a good run for beginners. Pretty much most of the Buffalo is though. Thanks for watching!
That looks amazing! Love the doggo!
@shelliglasow609 Thanks! This is without a doubt one of my top 3 favorite floats in the state
Cool video! Never been in that part of the world but watching others stuff on the Ozarks. Interesting how the pool of water at the bottom of the falls appears to be a blue/green color.
@milepost4846 that's pretty standard for most of the waterfalls, creeks, and rivers around here. Right after a big rain, the water will be brown and muddy. But after a couple of days, it clears up, and the sun hitting the sediment in the water makes it the emerald color. Makes for some great photos! Thanks for watching!
You picked the right time, I always seem to go in the summer when it’s just a dried up stagnant pool
I guess I got lucky that day. I stopped by there on my way to float the Kings River. We floated Marble to Marshall Ford that weekend. That section was at 5.5 feet on the gauge. So you might check the river level on American Whitewater next time before you go.
@@AROwnBackyard good tip, I watched that float recently and wanted to do marble this weekend but it was low and I didn’t make it out. I’ve only done Marshall ford to rock house a couple of times but it’s a great float. Love your stuff man, hope to see you out there someday
@@2013074 I haven't done Marshall Ford to Rock House, but I'd like to do that one. Man, I appreciate the comments and thanks for watching! If you ever see a dude with a GoPro on his head floating on a green Pescador, please say hello!
@@AROwnBackyard it’s a blast - 16 miles and a good camp spot at about 12, and if you see a pinhead in a yellow Buffalo that’s me!
@@AROwnBackyard and any way I can help out man. You’re doing us all a great service!
Man I just did bakers ford to south maumee , bakers ford to 36°01'20"N 92°40'18"W then camped, then from there to south maumee, I was so exhausted holy hell, I was on a paddleboard with probably too much gear the weather last night was pretty scary, wind was going off and I didn’t have a rain tarp
@ryguyiskindofaflyguy Yikes! I didn't see what the weather was near the river but I know there were lots of thunderstorms and some tornadoes around the state the last few days. I definitely would've been hesitant to do an overnight last weekend. Glad it worked out for you though.
So cool to see the lower section! We did the ponca to pruitt stubbornly just to see what its all about. Lower buffalo next! That duffel is getting put to good use on the Buffalo!
@GatewoodBrown there is nothing stubborn about doing Ponca to Pruitt! That is still my favorite section of the river. I love the rapids and the scenery on that stretch. But I do think the remoteness of the Lower Wilderness area is perfect for the style of videos you like to do. Man, you've got to give me a shout when you're up this way! Let's do a float! And yes, I'm loving the duffel. I just realized I forgot to drop the links in the comments for this video. They are there now.
@@AROwnBackyard Exactly seemed like the 'postcard' section would be worth it even with some dragging. Turned out to be plenty of water and only dragged a select few times. The lower wilderness gets pretty remote which is cool, you did a great job showing it off. Maybe next year!
@@GatewoodBrown Thanks man, I appreciate that!
Lol this video is cute! Me and my best friend did the whole buffalo during flood stage this year in full rain and river surging! We did the whole buffalo in 6ish floating days! We left april 24, 2024 and hit buffalo city on may 2nd, 2024! Us and 4 other ppl were the only ppl on the river! We were flowing at like 8mph! And the corner after rush landing had 6-8 foot swells! That water is so flat and clear! If you want to know how to do the whole thing hit me up!
Lol y’all went into the white river like you were riding rapids! Lol in flood stage you can stick left and go to Rileys pull out no issues at all! Y’all had a super clean float with no debris rapids etc!…
lol...what? lol Dude, this was our first time down this stretch and we got all kinds of conflicting info on Clabber.,,,lol. I know now I could have paddled it just fine. I have a lot of newbies that watch these videos. I don't need to be encouraging less experienced paddlers to do something that leads to an accident. And our outfitter handling our shuttle prefers Cartney and we were fine with that. We were here for a chill float.
I've been looking at this stretch and was planning to go to Riley's. Have figured using a ferry maneuver would work. Is that what you did or did you paddle up stream on the White and then come down?
@@AROwnBackyard I am glad you showed how to portage around this spot and highlighted how it could be dangerous for inexperienced kayakers.
Fishing for gar
A good friend and I made that float every year for 20 years. We loved it for the fishing, scenery, and lack of day-trippers. Clabber Creek is a much easier float when the water is up, otherwise it has lots of big boulders that you have to dodge. Taking out downriver on the White was a good move. That current on the White, especially when the dam is generating, can be a real pain. Thanks for the video. Brings back lots of good memories for this geezer.
@michaelwiley3221 yeah, we had someone talk us out of Clabber. But after going around it, and learning that David made it on his paddleboard, I wish I had just paddled through. I will next time. This is definitely a quiet float with tons of scenery that I would do again. Thanks for the feedback. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Done this several times and have not portage any of it. And I am not a great paddler. In a wore out Old Town loaded to the gills.
@BootsLee I wasn't sure what to expect. Our outfitter talked it up and talked us out of it. I AM a good paddler and realized afterwards I could have made it just fine. But I'm not going to get on here and encourage inexperienced paddlers to do it.
@AROwnBackyard I had a feeling you got talked out of it. I've watched your other floats in much rougher water. I used to do this float every year on Columbus day with a group of friends. We usually float down the White to Ships to get out.
@@BootsLeeI hope I get to do this float again, and if I do, I'm definitely paddling through. lol. Thanks for watching. And I appreciate the feedback!
@AROwnBackyard The best part is having the river to yourself, and no signs of civilization.
@@BootsLee Absolutely! That was my favorite part. 100%
Cold Springs Hollow has a really cool old schoolhouse up on the bluff. I have hiked in from close to Almus Knob to that schoolhouse.
@aliciarhae After floating through here, I see I definitely need to do some of the hikes around it. I'll have to check those places out. Thanks for the comment, as always!
Great trip. Glad we finally got to do it. Maybe next time Eric and I won’t bring as much stuff.
@neilwebb504 hahaha! There's NO chance ya'll are bringing less stuff! 🤣
Portaging Clabber is a watered down Lower experience👎 this should be an 8 min video and without fishing a 90 sec reel😂
Feel free to move on then. That's why it has chapters.
Thanks for sharing this!! Been wanting to do this...especially above the campground but this is great. Which gauge?
@themarcusallen Thanks! Glad you like it. I actually don't know where the gauge is located. I just look at it on American Whitewater and the River App, both of which just list the level for the whole section from Barkshed to the White. But I'm like you, I want to go back and do the whole thing. I wish I had done it on that day because it was perfect!
Cool spot!
@CasksnQue , one of the best spots!!!!
Your videos are always so helpful when planning big out of state trips. Really wanting to do this one!
@GatewoodBrown thank you my friend! Glad you like it. Not sure if I mentioned it, but you can overnight this river. Just check with the local outfitters on acceptable private property areas for camping. Also, I have a video coming up soon that you're gonna like. Rush to the White River on the Buffalo (2-nighter), and featuring the Remote Designs 60L Dry Duffel!
@@AROwnBackyard this is great river beta! I see you went at 5.9’, is that where you like to see the guage? Those bluffs look 80% the way there with out all of the Buffalo filming restrictions! We did Ponca to Pruitt last weekend and loved it. Can’t wait to watch your film too!
@@GatewoodBrown oh man, Ponca to Pruitt is probably my favorite stretch! Especially Ponca to Kyle's Landing. But I'm not familiar with the filming restrictions you mentioned. What's that? Do you mean for drones? As for the King's....I would say 5.5 to 6.0 for THIS section. As the level decreases, there are stretches further down river that are fine. I've not done those yet though. From what I understand, this section and maybe the section after this, are the most scenic.
@@AROwnBackyard thanks man I’ll keep those flow rates in mind. It goes beyond drones but because it’s a national park you have to get a bunch of permits if the video you’re making ends up on RUclips. Very, very dumb. They basically made commercial filming regulations apply to anyone posting to social media
@@GatewoodBrown whaaaaaat???? Man, I've never heard of those regulations! I've got quite a few videos of the Buffalo River on my channel. I'm going to ask around to some of my outdoors blogging friends on that. Also, I don't think it is a National Park just yet. Still just a National River, to my knowledge. They are working on National Park status though. I could be way behind on that, but I think that's right.
