The saying: "de laatste loodjes leggen" has a history. When a few centuries ago a family member died and you could not afford a proper funeral you went to the poor house, explained your situation and you got some "loodjes" (coins made of lead (lood)) and with it you went to the undertaker and there you gave it to him. Your family member was then buried without you having to pay.

You can do it.. je kan het. Can is kan. You is jij of jou. Do is doen. It is het. As you see and know the pronunciation of our Dutch words, you notice that it is all nearly the same.....that is dat. Is is is. The is de ( same pronunciation). All is allemaal ( all(emaal)). Light is licht. Book is boek ( same pronunciation), water is water, nail is Nagel, boat is boot ( same pronunciation), bread is brood ( oo is pronounced as in over), over is over, house is huis, mast, to drink is drinken, paper is papier, table is tafel, I is ik, he is hij ( pronounced as hi 👋), door is deur, lamp, beer is bier, glass is glas, pot, white is wit, work is werk, nose is neus, floor is vloer, you see.....very simple. Etcetera

That 75% turns 95% nowadays if you wanna learn slang Dutch. Already back in the 90s I picked up things like "de meisje" en "deze dingetje". "Het" seems to be disappearing slowly. So does "u" by the way. Kids barely use it anymore and address everyone with "jij". I frankly wouldn't bother much with "het" if Dutch wasn't my first language. Don't believe the textbooks and your school too much. Just learn to speak like the locals. I'm in southern Spain now and my old spanish text books are basically useless here too.

Another great video that gives a lot of options and methods to learn Dutch. Yes, I had found Niels, so good on you to support him, but as you say it was quite sad to see the channel become inactive. But his videos are so excellent, they're worth watching again and again to drill in the rules of the Dutch language. Kim I had also found and am currently a paid student. Her approach is very fun and easy to follow. After that, everything is new to me so this was a fantastic overview of what's out there. Thanks!

Wow ... now that must be a very nice man .... 🙂. Deeply impressed, I hope you like the language and the world which comes with it. It is my mother tongue and I'm very fond of Dutch, even though French sounds more elegant, German more efficient and English more common, and Spanish more basic. P.S. Please read Biegel: Tuinen van Dorr, Sleutelkruid, Kleine Kapitein, ... the Rohald Dahl, of the Netherlands but different. And some spoken Dutch at the end would be nice ice on this interesting cake. Thanks for sharing your story.

The masculine and feminine word gender (that still exists in German) merged together into common-gender aka "de"-words. So words referring to a male or female are "de"-words. de man, de vrouw, de jongen, de acteur/actrice, de meester, de juf Diminutives being "het"-words still take precedence though: het mannetje, het jongetje, het meisje

Heel erg bedankt!

Tsjonge jonge (literally "boy o boy") is has a much more ironical and mildly disapproving note than "my goodness". It is literally said while shaking ones head at so much dumbness. It is usually uttered when the speaker thinks you are doing something utterly stupid, but does not find it important enough make a "thing" out it. Then he or she utter a "tjsonge jonge"
