This photographer is truly unique.
In this video, I want to take a closer look at Dominic Dähnckes photography style, because I think the way he photographs shadows is something I haven't seen before and a really creative photography approach. His way of framing simple compositions in an exciting way is also very unique

TikTok Street Photography Sucks. Here's why...
Просмотров 4,7 тыс.Год назад
In this video, I want to discuss a topic that bothers me. People who declare their content as street photography when, in reality, it isn't street photography at all, just to get some views. I noticed this phenomenon, especially in the short-form content field. I don't want to attack anyone personally, but these were examples I saw when I scrolled through the "street photography" topic on TikTo...

Street Photography as an Introvert (& how to solve it)

In this video, I wanna talk about what it takes to do street photography as an introvert and show you 5 steps to become more extroverted, so you can get some great street photos as well. So you're an introvert on the low end of the scale and yet you have a youtube channel filming yourself. Hm...
Even if you have people posing and you see the streets it doesn't feel real anymore, it feels more like watching a vacation photo. One time I was with a group and a photograph ask us can she make a photo just of us hanging out, we all agree to us but some girls did start to pose. The photograph lower her camera and ask us to pretend like she isn't there. That for me is more a street photograph, yes you can ask people for consent but still tell them to just be their natural self
They just use the hashtag because it gets a lot of peoples attention.
AYE MEN!!! I see these "photographers" in my own city now, and it's frankly 🤮 They think they're cool, hip, "influential" street photographers, but they're not, they're just doing portrait photography sessions on open streets instead of a studio. And don't try telling them otherwise; a few will be open minded and have a conversation with you about it, looking for insights on how to get better and do real street photography (kudos to those of you with this mindset!), but others will outright attack you, call you a "gatekeeper" or some such stupidity, and you just have to walk away as they're hurling insults down the block, it's disgusting what TikTok has done to ruin not just photography, but society as well; CCP-inflicted brain rot!
I'm just a hobbyist but agree totally. I do some street photography in areas where I live. My way is to capture the whole wide range of lives on streets and buildings, less on people because I'm a local in SE-Asia, Asians don't like a local stranger to do arbitrary photograph others, you could get into a fight, unless you're a foreigner tourists.
you're absolutely right, these are portraits, not street photography. these tiktokers... they've probably never heard of henri cartier-bresson, elliott erwitt or any of the other greats. i hope YOU have😜.
This is not street photography. It’s portrait photography taken on the street. And that’s not an opinion it’s a fact. There’s nothing wrong with this type of photography, but let’s call it what it actually is. Leave it to tiktokers to confuse things.
I don’t know why but it bugs me when people use the LED instead of the viewfinder.
I totally agree with you man. To me, street photography is about capturing the subtle and authentic moments in life. But those TikTok “Photographers” just shoot with brightest aperture all the time, which is lazy and boring. I admire their courage to ask a stranger for a portrait but it just lacks storytelling and composition, basically anyone can make that kinda photo if you give them a camera.
I've owned dozens of cameras from Leica, Nikon and Fuji over the years and recently went on a European holiday with just a Q2 and my iPhone. Honestly, I was shocked at how much better the iPhone was at everything except portraits - even low light. My biggest gripe with using the phone as a main camera is using a touch screen rather than a physical shutter button. I might need to take a quick shot and finding the shutter button on the screen is a PITA especially if you're in bright sun or the camera has switched modes to something you don't want, like Pano or Movie.
A very silly competition . The color sharpness and depth is a million time s they of a silly eyephone How big can you print .. forgot they huh?????
Nice film, lovely shots. The Leica has certainly got you shooting more, it seems. Thks.
Thanks. It absolutely did :)
Well now, perhaps an iPhone 11 would be more fair as a comparison? That would only have a 12mp sensor. Otherwise, maybe compare the iPhone 15 to the 60mp Q3? Would love to see that.
I did with my wife using a 20 inch monitor using a I phone 15 and a x100v and she knows zero about photography. Out of 10 photos She easily could tell the difference between the ten photos when came two cameras. When I asked what it was that made the two different? She said it was something in the texture of the I phone photos that was very noticeable that gave it a plastic look compared to the Fuji.
Thanks for sharing your experience. It’s interesting to hear the opinions of people that don’t know what to look for
Can’t go wrong with Leica q2 man. I love it.
Heh, heh, heh!!
Jan, you can't imagine the honor and happiness this video means to me. It's amazing to see how another person (you) can swim in the concepts of emotion, composition and message of my own photographs. Oneself is often his own best enemy (imposter syndrome) and other times his best narcissist. Seeing and listening to other people's opinions always helps to put your feet on the ground, both for the good and the bad. I thank you very much for your time, attention and energy for my vision. It means a lot and has incalculable value. Thank you very much Jan. A big hug.
Thank you so much. I really appreciate your kind words✌🏻
Love your video style and photos are outstanding!
Thank you😊
As a fellow introvert and avid amateur photographer, I found your video very interesting and informative. Thanks
Thanks, I appreciate it✌🏻
Subscribed. Hope to see many more videos on your channel.
Thanks, I appreciate it ✌🏻
These are exactly the strategies that I have already been using to get more comfortable with my social anxiety while out on the street. I'm very glad to hear that what I have already been doing is helpful is a general sense. That must mean I'm naturally making good progress! Hearing that I'm not alone and that things get better is great.
Glade to read that. Best of luck on your way to more confidence. What step are you at currently?
amazing video :)
Thanks✌🏻
Nice & Thanks :)
Thank you, appreciate it✌🏻
Anyone looking for INSPIRATION ‼️ for their photography check out a channel called BLACK AND WHITE PROFUSION - you won’t be disappointed
This belongs to the trick photography category, it gets boring pretty quickly...
That's not true... i can't stop watching this type of photography...the composition, colour matching..etc there are creativity we can learn a lot from,..
mit der Videoqualität wirst du Erfolg haben :) weiter so
Danke, ich hoff’s :D
Very interesting! Great photographs
Great video! I rarely leave a comment, but I just wanted to say that I really appreciated this video and think that it needs more attention. Keep going!
Thank you so much. I really appreciate it.
My favorite pics here were probably the ladder leading to the moon and dead tree and alive tree, his technique is pretty creative, very inspiring to mix the contrasting imagery like that to create 1 whole picture, and a palm tree in a wheel barrow is lovely
Yeah, this pictures are really great!
This is gem of a channel, subscribed for more awesome and interesting videos to come! (502nd)
Thanks✌🏻
500🎉❤
Truly amazing🎉
Cool images. Sporting of you to give the photographer a shout out, Jan. Shows what can be done w/an eye for something unique, and/editing. Simplicity, subject perspective, and proximity to items can yield compelling photos. Valuable to draw inspiration and ideas from others and build on them, without outright duplication. One vid nit-pic. “Categorie” should be “Category”. A follow up vid that shows off a few of your own pics that this guy influenced would be super - perhaps the beginning of a series. Cheers!
Yeah totally, will written. Thanks for correcting my mistake (honestly) and maybe I’ll do a follow up on my pictures that were inspired by him when there’s enough to show, but what I can confirm for sure is that I’m planning on doing more of these analyses.
Do you have a photographer I should take a closer look at?
Chema Madoz
Cooper & gorfer, fan ho, sebastião salgado, charles fréger, szilveszter makó, sir simon marsden, daido moriyama and michael kenna to name a few
@@hachimaki Thanks for the input. I'll check them out
28mm is good enough
Great pictures, especial the b&w. Did you take by DNG or JPEG ? How about your white balance setting ? I also have a Q2 and would learn more details. Thanks.
I usually shoot in DNG and then add a little contrast in post. When I'm just out with my friends, I prefer JPG-L toi keep the file size down. In the past, I had some problems with the Auto WB, so I mostly keep it at 6000 to ad a little warmer touch to the images.
@@janwinter.mp4 thanks a lot
Great video and tips Jan! When I started photography I thought I would prefer shooting landscape and cars, since I would put myself on the same introvert scale like you. But somehow it turned out I look shooting people, specially in a more documentary style. Still I don't have the courage to put my camera directly in front of people faces, since I feel like I would violate their public privacy. That's why I use my Q3 to crop the hell out of it :D at least for now. Where are you located? Grüßes aus BaWü :D
That’s a great use case for 60MP :D I’m located in Münster (NRW).
After taking a picture of someone, turn and shoot something else, so they won't think that they are your only focus-you look more like a tourist or someone who doesn't really know what he wants to shoot having fun with the camera.
Great tip!
I love the ratio of the video, also your background is soothing af, good job
Thank you✌🏻
Conventional, practical tips, Jan - standard YT content, but repetition reinforces. Clever plug for tip 6.2. (Is there a 6.1?) Related tip - keep moving camera and body if possible, as if you are adjusting the camera - fits being sneaky. Also, if someone really objects, demure and offer to delete the pic. Some make a point of not taking photos in which someone can be identified, but those images tend to be less compelling. Cheers!
Thanks for the feedback, these tips may not be new, but I think they‘ll help beginners. Tip 6 is the focus on body language :) Great addition to the tip!
Did I miss any tips and are there other techniques that you like to use?
Nice blend of POV, commentary and exploring 🙂 dont be too hard on yourself, I personally think there were more better shots than you thought at the time 💪👍 I shoot with the Q2 as well, trying to tell myself to only go out with that, as its all I should really need haha
Thank you. I was definitely surprised at home, that there were pictures that turned out better than expected :D For me, especially in the beginning of my Leica experience, it was quite hard to only have the 28, especially if you aren't used to the focal length. But it will get easier over time✌🏻
Kia Ora from NZ. Great video thanks - some good tips. I've just started pushing a bit more into Street and have also been Shooting from the Hip, whilst I try to 'see shots' and train my eye as I go about on foot haha.
Glade you liked the tips. My upcoming video will focus on how to take candid pictures of strangers.
I live in Turkey and have been telling this tiktok street photography nonsense to my friends for 1 year. This is not a street photography, I say portrait photography in natural light. I'm an advertising photographer, and when I'm shooting on the street, everyone who passes by asks me, "hey, are you a street photographer," and I'm tired of saying no. This video has been completely in response to my sentences, congratulations to you. The only street element in the street photography on Tiktok is that it is being shot on the street at that moment :D
Thanks for sharing your situation. Let's hope that someday, this trend ends or gets corrected :)
Tiktok sucks already. Not more to say 😅
I wholeheartedly agree. I always thought this whenever I saw a video like that pop up.
Nice content ! You got yourself a sub
Thank you ✌🏻
Thanks for sharing. Nice photos! I don’t agree with the comments about necessarily being closer. I think a lot of your photos are about the places and architectural settings which is fitting for the focal length
Thanks for the feedback. I think it depends on the style. Some pictures are meant to be closer, while others, especially when the building / shapes are the main point of attention, I like the wider approach.
The best smartphone cameras are impressive for being so tiny, but compared to dedicated cameras they are miles away, especially when taking photos of human subjects. When you watch comparisons online, it looks so much closer than it actually is. In reality the difference is night and day, even the cheapest pocket cameras sold today are miles better. Phones are way too over-processed, completely lacking the sharpness and DoF of dedicated cameras... and so much more. If you're not serious about photography and just need bright, colourful and high contrast photos for your social media, then a smartphone will do the trick. If photography is your thing, then get a camera (even a budget camera will do) and proper objectives suited for your style of photography.
Even when I took a look at it on my computer and zoomed in a bit, it was sometimes really hard to tell the difference sharpness wise. They really did a good job with the 48MP sensor compared to the 14 Pro, but your right, when it is about colors and especially the depth of field, a proper camera has a look, the smartphone just isn’t able to recreate.
for 98% iPhone will be preferable. Now, if you are a pro or avid photographer, and you have an itch to drop $6,000, it's your money.
Yeah@@musiclover4311
People have to be really honest how they look at the pictures. I would confidently say that 80% of people use only the smartphone to check pictures. On top of that, people do not tend to upload pictures full quality to the cloud. There is also quality reduction. And, even fewer are looking for specific details in the pictures. In my opinion, dedicated cameras are a niche market. Pictures from a phone today never been so awesome.
I totally agree!
Holy I love your edit and the 4:3 video uGHHH
Thanks, I appreciate it✌🏻
