Episode 12a Fragments of Rock Mike Love Beach Boys Recorded 21st May 1972 Montfort Hall Leicester
Recorded 21st May 1972 Montfort Hall Leicester
Context; At the beginning of 70s the Beach Boys’ style of music was no longer in fashion.
But then they released a near ground breaking album in 1971: Surf’s Up
To my amazement it was even an album of the week on Ashley and my Saturday morning rock show, Extravaganza.
So, what would they follow it with? The answer was Carl and the Passions So Tough.
To promote it they embarked on a tour which included a concert at De Montfort Hall, Leicester. Nottingham had yet to build the Royal Concert Hall.
By this time, Brian Wilson no longer toured with them, so I interviewed Mike Love.
So, what do you ask a group who must have been asked all the questions?

FRAGMENTS Chas & Dave May 1982, possibly before their gig at The Maze on Mansfield Road. By the time I interviewed Chas & Dave in Nottingham 1982 I had been a fan of theirs for about five years. If you’ve read my autobiography, This Is the BBC Holmes Service, you’ll be well aware of my roots east of London, in Leigh-on-Sea. Apart from supporting my home team, Southend United, I was also a Spurs...

In January 1967, Keith was on the phone booking Jimmy Cliff and the Shakedown Sound for his BeachComber Club. At the same time a little-known guitarist Jimi Hendrix had entered the singles chart with ‘Hey Joe’. That phone call and that single resulted in an historic booking for Nottingham. Keith left The Beachcomber to join with Keith Atkinson, teacher and rowing club member to book bands for T...

I went to school with Gary; Westcliff High School for Boys. He was a couple of years senior to me. My favourite school memory was playing the school’s grand piano in our Main Hall The headmaster, Henry Cloke would rush in with his cloak billowing behind and say: ‘Get off that piano Brooker, we’ll have no boogie woogie in here! A few years later we would support him in The Paramounts as they pla...

Episode 1: The Cramps and The Police at Rushcliffe Leisure Centre Nottingham
I distinctly remember hearing "ride a white swan" for the first time as an eleven-year-old, in 1971. my life was changed in an instant, forever.
Led Zeppelin were great And Ten years after , Renaissance i remember, so many great bands was a super time 😊
Ten Years After , great memories
I saw so many bands in these club including Led Zeppelin , T Rex Family etc I was squashed against stage for Zep and my ears rang for 5 days great times
I saw so many bands in these club including Led Zeppelin
Really interesting! I don't think I'd heard Brian Eno speaking before and certainly hadn't heard Rik Kenton. Great to hear from them.
He's harking back to the brehon law of ireland, where a troubadour could travel the country and be given free lodgings and free meals. I wonder did he read that somewhere. Interesting interview.
What a find , pre teen idea , you agree he was always a star even as a kid , he was happy to play for free , and sweet how he help john Peel , not the other way round. Oh yea a 10k reward for the guitars that Trex used .
Living Mythological Creature...🕊️🇬🇧🇺🇲🕊️
Great interview! Thank you for this...:)
I've only just come across this so thanks for uploading it. You're so lucky to have met John Cale albeit he does have a reputation for being hard to interview and for being abrupt, but I suppose he gets fed up of being asked the same questions all the time, especially about Lou Reed and VU and Nico etc. He was heavily using substances around that time too so that probably contributed to his demeanour.
I knew it would be a challenge, but I did enjoy meeting him and am proud to have done so. I knew I should steer clear of Velvets, but was frustrated! Do listen to some more Fragments and tell me what you think
Brendan the Navigator discovered America
Roxy Music was the first "modern" band. Using technology in the such a thoroughly dependent way.
Yes and you can thank Eno for that. A talent ahead of his time
Hi John. Amazing video, particular for me as Mark Askwith (Lead singer) was my Dad! That’s more information than I’ve ever really heard or received since my dad passed away when I was 15 (unfortunately before I had any interest in asking about the band!) I was given a copy of chicken town but haven’t started reading it (will now!) Might be a long shot but I thought I would ask anyway, if there was any way of being sent the recording that you have? I currently have; new religion, blood on the wall, Arabian daize, number seven (which is my favourite lyrically) and a great one called LBJ 4 JFK but I’ve never heard 2 of the ones you have. I’d happily share the ones I have too if you don’t already have them! Anyway, hope to get a response but otherwise thanks for the video! Steven Askwith
What a wonderful way to discover even more about your dad. As for sharing the music, it’s one that needs to be ok with Jess. We’ll consult him John & Mark
Six Hands In Tempo. I remember the name, and was impressed when I realised what it stands for.... !! I first heard of them in the days of Extravaganza and the Morning Show. I ended up being involved with RNottm and Rock Shows for several years around this time.
loved their style of music and they were good friends. But I have lost touch with them. Do you have anyway of contacting them, I’d love to send them this copy
PS Great to hear from a fellow Extravaganza rock enthusiast. They weren’t SHIT of course, but very good!
@@sparkyholmes Sorry, I don't have any details. I never actually knew them.....they were just a name on the radio.
Wow. This interview brought back so many memories: I remembered seeing Sense practice in a large shed, which I think was on the edge of Broxtowe closest to the Nuthall roundabout. And the neighbour knocking on the window, to remind Paul that it was time to stop playing. And it reminded me of visiting your house in West Bridgford and being amazed by your record collection, and how you had records stacked up one side of the staircase. Which was my idea of Heaven, at the time. So thank you for a most entertaining 24:11, John.
I also remember seeing Sense play at the Hearty Goodfellow, with two keyboard players. And purchasing copies of “Holding On” and “Three Minutes Later” from Selectadisc, which I still have in my singles collection. While Tony’s vocal from Believe In Yourself still pops in to my mind on pertinent occasions.
I'm delighted it brings back so many memories. The collection is still going strong! Much appreciated John
The people writing in sound like a right bunch of Tories. [*watches show*] On the other hand... Still love Toyah, though.
Great review. ❤❤Roxy Music Band
So pleased you enjoyed the early Roxy Music interview. Eno was a wonderful, charming, eccentric guest and I didn’t realise at the time how lucky we were to have hm as our guest
This is excellant. Thank you. Is there any chance that you will be able to post the complete Marc Bolan interview some time in the near future? I hope that you do not mind my asking again. Thank you again.
so bad i cant even date it
I saw Krokus at Rushcliffe. Managed by Grahame Neil the Rock DJ from Radio Trent. They were promoting their album Metal Rendevouz. He later murdered his girlfriend and buried her at Radcliffe Power Station and hanged himself in Lincoln Prison
I didn’t realise that Krokus also played Rushcliffe. Graham Neal was one of my proteges at Radio Nottingham when I produced the Saturday rock show, Extravaganza, he used to go out and do interviews for us. He took the ideas to Radio Trent and set up his own well-branded progressive music show there. After killing Lynn and burying her, he then had the nerve of appealing on TV for her to come home. I can never forgive him.
Music people didn’t like Marc in the early days, they took the piss calling him Larry the Lamb. John Peel took hm round with hm and kept playing Marcs early stuff, When T Rex took off suddenly everyone wanted him.
A programme _for_ young adults made _by_ young adults.
perhaps of interest to only two or three people...
It was, Dusty Custard, it certainly connected with older youth especially.. Our mail bag at Pebble Mill averaged over 500 letters a week - an unprecedented amount for a programme, even c/w national shows
Nosin' Around, Nosin' Around ...
To answer the question near the end- Brian Wilson is about 188-189 CM. The others were a bit shorter, with Al Jardine being quite short probably 167 CM
Wonderful stories and interview. Yes, Brian's band did do a studio remake of the Smile album and a tour to support it (which included a live album), and a few years ago the Beach Boys released a boxed set, including a more or less completed Beach Boys version of the album.
That’s brilliant info Keith. I’ll let my wife, Kate know too Also, I’ll have to buy her that box set. I didn’t know about it, although we do have the modern CD of Smile Keep on surfing John
A Pint and a Half of Viny - the prequel... A RCA Victor film from 1956, recording to listening, ruclips.net/video/10CKG-1DD20/видео.html And absence apologies for this evening.
Wow not seen this before. Very interesting.
Yes bring back the Donny and Marie show what's this as awful brummie rubbish😂
Ah, the 'joys' of the regional opt out!
It certainly is, the show should have been re-titled Look Elsewhere! What a collection of dull TV presenters - Vera appears to be wearing a funny looking hat, Toyah (did I tell you for the millionth time I worked with Larry Olivier) Wilcox looking and sounding like Chris Packham in drag. As for the others - who are they? I thought Pebble Mill had an unblemished record for broadcasting - until I watched this dross.
If you dont like this, it means you're too old, grandpa...
I don't remember taking mushrooms
Its in Nottingham, bring some vinyl with a story. For 1st weds in March its F
Perfectly put! Thanks
Gaffa at their best. Brilliant.
I was asked to suggest a happening Nottingham band for the show and immediately thought of Gaffa. They did me and us proud!
Amazing!! Loved it thank you 💜 I've still got a cassette tape from T.Rex and Bronco the support band I was naughty and took my recorder into the Odeon Birmingham I think it was 1971...
I bet there are a lot of people who would like to hear that tape
I was lucky enough to meet 'Marc Bolan' on 2 occasions 1975 -'76 here is some of the convo' recorded after the T.REX concert in Southport (near Liverpool) - in the lounge in The Royal Clifton Hotel 'haPpy days'! -- ruclips.net/video/gW1kj8Y6_QY/видео.html
I was there and it was a great night. What I've never understood is how The Police were playing the Rushcliffe Leisure Centre in June and headlining the Reading Festival on the Friday night in August without a 10 ten hit.
t is incongruous isn’t it but they really did suddenly take off and it helped to already have had two well worked commercial songs available to promote.
Hello, will the full interview ever be available at all ? Fantastic video, thanks 😊
Yes. Will do. I transferred it in sections so need to do again with out the edits
@@sparkyholmes thank you, i cannot wait 👍👍👍👍

Thanks you guys, i would love to hear the entire interview
I was a listener to Extravaganza from the very early days, and when it expanded to include a 'Tuesday Long One' co-presented by Phil Holmes. It was the precursor to 'The Radio Nottm Rock Show' presented by Trevor Dann and Jaye C (and the late Graham Neale). In its final version the programme was presented by Mark Robson and Me.
Oh my goodness Kevin how good to hear from; you. What are you doing now? And how is Mark doing? John
@@sparkyholmes I dropped into the category of "early retirement" several years ago, so I now do anything and nothing. Mark Robson continued working for the BBC and I believe he's now somewhere in the Greater London area. It's coming up (July) for the 40th anniversary of the end of those Rock Shows.
JUst discovered this. You have a new subscriber, John. ;-)
Marc had such a lovely speaking voice, I've never heard this before, thanks for sharing!
Delighted you enjoyed Marc’s interview. When I discovered it in my collection, I knew I had to share it with his many fans.
Wow this is one of those hidden gems polished and restored in all its regullgent glory.....Thank you Mark for making me aware of these videos and look forward to another chat at the shack gym soon. If you are able to contact me I've got a couple of ideas I'd like to run past you. Kind regards Paul Weston NG9 NEWS
Aye up Paul. Thanks for the positive comment, Yes see you down the gym and we can have a chat about the ideas. My Dad will be interested too but not the gym bit!
Hi Paul It surprised me too. Having recorded it for archive I forgot all about it. It was only when Mark reminded me, I dug it out. It was not as bad aa I’d imagined it! John
This was great to watch Very nostalgic for me as I bought the New Religion single at the time it was released, and I'm very proud to say I've still got it. Definitely one of the best and original sounding punk singles ever. I agree that Arabian Daze was disappointing - I first heard it about 10 years ago. Thanks for this post, and a big thank you to Cherry Red for putting those Some Chicken singles out. Let's hope for more so I can add them to my playlist!
Mark And I keep in touch with Jess Chicken and if anything develops we’ll let you know
Amazing to hear Johnnie’s voice so clearly, love this. ❤️
Very enjoyable thanks for sharing.
Great work
Thank you for this as Procol Harum are my favourite band of all time,in fact I'm quit obsessive probably.Have seen them live 8 times (5 with orchestra) and was at the rainbow for there first orchestral gig in England. The passing of Gary is tragic but he has left us with so much good music which will live on.Always pleased to listen to Gary so thanks again this will be saved on my tablet for future reference.
Hi Jeffrey I always felt that Gary deserved to make it, even when he was at school and in The Paramounts. I’m envious of all those concerts you saw. Did you ever catch up with him when he guested for Bill Wyman in the Rhythm Kings? Thanks for telling us about your appreciation of the short interview, it’s been amazingly well received John and Mark
@@sparkyholmes Did see them once but alas no Gary that night
Had the pleasure of Gary's company many times early 80s,top guy, gave me one of his albums.Sincerest Condolences to Franky and family.
Did Gary have an interest in politics .was he labour or conservative
I’m afraid we never discussed politics, so I’ve no idea. Out of interest why do you ask?
As far as I can remember, he wisely kept away from commenting on politics. Unlike some today …
Mentioned Gary went to westcliff high did he show interest in any subjects ? He may have gone on to study before he joined a band
I used to watch the Paramounts when I was still at school: I was two years below him. I guess he went straight into the music business
Excellant Thank you. Will you be posting your full Marc Bolan interview at some point. Fans will love to hear it in full if this is possible? Thank you again for your posts.
Fantastic musician, still have Procol Harum's first album on original mono vinyl, fabulous album. RIP Gary.
