Even in the middle of Autumn it's worth checking Skysight. Beautiful little day that I would not have even turned up at the club for without the good forecasting. Takeoff Location: Gliding Club Of Victoria at Benalla, Australia. Glider: Nimbus 3T 25.5m. Fun Level: High. ayvri.com for the nice IGC replay viewer

Using A Paddock As An Airfield

I was a little overambitious early in the season and parked the clubs LS7. Just as I'm coming to a stop some of the crop (Lupin) catches my left wing which doesn't allow for a perfect stop. Easy derig and thanks to Peter for collecting me :) The farmer told me a glider landed in this exact paddock during the 1987 Gliding World Championships at Benalla. Does anyone recognize this one?

Would love a longer clip. These shorts are annoying! Oh, and where is this? Looks almost like Gawler in South Australia, but the clip is too short 😊
It’s by Shepparton, Victoria. Sorry about the short upload! I recorded a 850km pureglide yesterday though so there’s much longer videos to come.
😍
Very nice
Stonks of the highest order! Thanks for a very insightful video. It would have been no small job to voiceover the entire length of this, but it is very, very helpful for a fledgling glider pilot. Oh, and we’ll get you pronouncing Peechelba correctly one day ;)
Oh no I had wondered if I had Peechelba right!
HI ! Where is the Nimbus winglet from ? Can Shempp- Hirth be ordared ?
Hi! It is a custom design made here many years ago with an Australian airworthiness certificate. Unfortunately these can not be ordered from Schempp Hirth.
Looks like a great time!
One of the only places in aviation where you get to fly right up next to other aircraft and it's not a problem
It's like formation flying, or air to air combat haha
I bet there's a huge handicap on that at competitions. Absolutely massive wings!
A somewhat large handicap for a glider from the 80's!
This video deserves a comment
Beautiful thermal!
Stunning, as always <3
I appreaciate that! See you this season :3
I do miss flying in George’s and Grifoo’s 4DM’s. My knees don’t though lol. Good to see Andrew putting to good use. Hopefully that Solo engine is t giving him the headaches it gave George.
Grifoo's is in good hands too. Flew XY a bunch with its new owner at Benalla. Those Solo's will never be perfect but it did the job most days while I was there..
Wouldn't it be better to launch from Mt Beauty?
Mt beauty is awesome to fly from and I do sometimes. This glider was based at Benalla though for the season :)
And the answer is...? How does the 4DM stack up against well ballasted JS3s?
Well, in this type of a comp with pretty high task speeds, the JS has the advantage in the glide with it's 60kg/m and low drag wing at anything over 80kts, but it only became a problem to keep up over 105kts. The 4DM would outclimb if they flew full ballast, and not when the JS3's were at ~56kg/m. Not a huge deal with such strong thermals. I'll always love big wings but the JS3 is clearly a new generation. Pretty impressive performance considering it's 8m shorter span!
@@StayHighStayFast Thanks for the info. Here in Europe one can buy a Nimbus 4M for €130k but a new JS3-RES will set you back about €270k including a trailer. Food for thought…
And I guess in weaker ‘European’ conditions the 4M may have an advantage in the weak thermals.
And I reckon only slightly in those conditions too. There just isn't much difference between modern 18m and the previous generation of open class (nimbus 4/ ASH25 ect)
Wait a second, I think I used to fly one AG in the form of an LS8 at DDSC going back a while.
I'm pretty sure the airframe is George Lee's old Nimbus 4DM, and this has had a registration/ comp ID change.
@@StayHighStayFast You were flying with Andrew right? I hired his LS8 from him a few times going back a couple of decades ago.
Yup. Probably the same reason that LS8 had the same rego..
Fricken awesome man! Haven't seen a video from you in ages! That was so good & mad tunes too ha ha. I flew in my first comp (as meat weight) in March this year, loved it!
Really cool!
<3
Been waiting, hope you share some video's again soon, cheers.
Long-form videos are awesome! None of this 30-second attention span crap! Great video, nicely presented. No BS. To the point, and informative.
Thanks! I intend to do more like that.
Well worth a visit !
Please share long format videos like before
Nice video Ryan
Very nice to finally have a new video from you! Great footage :)
My gosh man! I thought you'd given up the Ghost! So good to see a video from you. Cheers!
Not a chance!
@@StayHighStayFast Well thank Friction Plates for that! I flew in my first ever comp last week! (I was Ballast) So much unsiad right there. Would love to chat. Not on here, not yet anyway ha ha. Is there a way we can connect?
@@brushitoff503 That's cool I see you put up a video too on that! Where the fun really begins haha. Sure thing I added you on FB.
Stay High Stay Fast Stay Alive. General message to all glider pilots from experience. Talk to ATC if in CTA, I had a windshield full of glider at FL190 on descent in a near miss, circa 1994, just doing my job with fare paying passengers. I get gliding, having 300hrs + gliding before starting my airline career. The thrill of wave yeah....na do it properly or be on CH7 news where your family would not be proud of you....just saying
You're spot on. Have to play by the rules and share airspace with all users safely. However in this flight we remained outside the CTA. The Wave was south of the Melbourne-Sydney corridor then as we descended below FL125 and into class E we were back on Area Frequency :)
Fly the roads, parking lots and ridges in the a.m. trees in the afternoon. See where the birds are flying
Read terrain for colors and shape and what's birds doing?
Not a fan of the noisemaker, a variometer and the seat of your pants served me well...
Years ago, I think it was in 1982 or 83 I met a pilot who competed in European Gliding Championship in Rieti, Italy. One day he realized he will be a few hundred metres short on a final glide. In anger and desperation he did what you don't do, he put the nose down, increased speed and levelled a meter or two above the ground. To his and all others' amasement he made it to the finish line. After that they all tried to figure out what happened and came to the conclusion it was ground effect. Luckily, there was a flat field without any obstacles in his path.
Why do not flatten out for .5, 1, 2 seconds when it is peaking in, rough thermals?
A great video. How did you mount your camera? The view is very central and doesn't change. It's not the usual view with the camera mounted on the canopy (which will have the camera off centre).
It’s just forward of my hat with a mount that keeps it right up on the canopy so it doesn’t obstruct vision.
Nice trip. Note: Try getting a polarizer for your lens, to cut down cockpit reflections.
Great video! I have few technical questions regarding flying ls7 with water. Is there any way to contact you directly? Thank you!
You can ask away here but I'm don't exactly have the final say on all things LS7 :)
I remember a day at Mission Peak, Fremont California, back when Sky Sailing was still a going concern there. A convergence set up on the ridge, and we were able to soar quite far up the sides of some big Cu piling up against the ridge. Was in a 1-36, chasing the others as we wound around the castles in the sky. A great day..!
That was awesome. Never had the chance to ridge soar in a glider. Beautiful smooth air!
This is awesome video when are you putting up some new content ?
Thanks. Hopefully in the next month :)
I love it when you're in a thermal, but my head starts to throb. But I just can't stop watching it.
Much less disorienting IRL😉
My wife and I hiked across Mt Feathertop some 30 years ago. Inspiring to see you guys "conquer" it from above! Brilliant video, keep 'em coming. PS My vote is for less music and more pure flying and commentary. Unless you're playing something suitably sublime like JS Bach!
Are you guys using a transponder?
This glider did not have one. Many of us do have ADSB “in” and more and more gliders are adopting “out” via devices like skyecho.
Was it modified to add a nose release as well? Or still with belly release only? Can't really tell it from the video, but it looks more like a nose release tow to me
Yup it’s a handy modification that nose hook. Still has the CofG as well.
@@StayHighStayFast good to see it works well, considering adding this to mine. Costs an arm and a leg though 🤔
A long while ago I watched in awe as an N3 took off. As the glider picks up speed on the roll the wing tips lift and bend the wings upward long before they pick the fuselage up and take it away with them. Truly a majestic ship.
Well done !!!
PS also loved the 700 km+ cross country flight video you posted. Was great to follow the whole flight through from start to finish.
Feedback: I love this type of full length video of your flight. As a pre-solo student pilot it gives me great insight into many aspects of cross country flying, including thermalling techniques. I was able to follow your route and identify landmarks on Google Earth - very helpful, and inspiring! A little more commentary along the way would enhance the experience even more. Great work - keep 'em coming!
Thanks John I appreciate the feedback. I’d certainly like to do more longer videos and with more commentary. But I’ve been to busy flying the last 6 months so I haven’t had much chance to edit any footage. More to come :)
What program did you use to map your flight? The data you showed at the end was good. Thanks man
Hey mate, that map at the end is from Weglide.org This is a website most glider pilots upload their flight to compete and compare with each other. Mine are here: www.weglide.org/user/9204
@@StayHighStayFast Thanks Mate, happy flying
Stonks. Great video and I really enjoyed the commentary. Would like to see the deleted part as well.
Stonks! I might have to say that when I get a really good thermal. Interesting day and changing conditions.
Nice flying! That looked fun.
01:00 those millions of amazing cu's are also a subtle clue as well as the birds haha
I tend to trust the birds more than the cu some days😆
