Mk1 Escort rear seat brace repair Part 1
Doing a few repairs to my Mk1 Escort rear seat brace. It doesnt go to plan at times but what does?
It gives me chance to practice some welding and brush up on my metal fab skills.
Its not as easy as it looks but dont let that put you off. Give it a try like I did as i learned a lot.
You have to start some where.

Quick demo of me testing a set of clocks for a Mk1 Escort. Apologies on the re-cap at the end i forgot the dipped beam light which is a blue/white wire which goes to the 12v side of the battery.

Just a quick tip to help people change the spigot/pilot bearing on a ST170 engine using a un-used bolt from the RX8 Gearbox. Fits well into the back of the crank.

5 min video of my car running. Uses Sq Engineering water kit, Omex 600 management and Type 9 Ford gearbox with RAW Engineering bellhousing.
Good to see you back at it David and getting stuck in with the welding. Practice makes perfect, and yours is better than a lot of first timers so stick at it and I’m sure you’ll get it mastered when it comes to doing body panels. Also definitely do a video on the welder, I’m tempted to get one when it comes to redoing my Nova once the Escort is done.
Thanks Andy. Will definately do a review on the mig 181 and the next part of this repair.
Hi, does the loop wire on the rev counter have to be a specific wire?
Im not sure but my thinking is you would need the specific wire for it as ive never seen it done without the correct ford wire.
i Made the diode circuit for my rev gauge for my mk2 it works when the car is idling but when i rev the car the gauge cuts off, Do you have a fix or have run into this problem? Thanks
Hi, I never came across this issue ever so im not sure why it would do that other than a loose connection or faulty rev counter. Im assuming the rev counter worked fine before this change and no issues with the coil pack, leads and spark plugs?
@@davidgreen7841 thank you very much for your reply, i will go check all the conections and rev gauge thanks
Well done David, big step
Thank you Dave. Yours is really taking shape now 👍
It's alivvveee
Yes long overdue to get it working correctly. Ive forgotten how easy something should be but takes a while to get working as it should.
The title is misleading! I believe it's meant to say Ford ST170 "running" on ZX9r carbs.
Misleading??? Im a little lost here. Its a Ford Zetec ST170 engine, the engine management used to run the engine is a ME100 and im using ZX9R carbs. All factual and correct. Im suprised that only you thinks its misleading. Is this RUclips or Trading standards?
@@davidgreen7841 let me make it clear from my perspective (not being funny or smirking). I'm a motorcycle guy who owns a ZX9R and a ZX14. The ZX9r in the title of your video stood out more to me as I read it. A Ford engine in a ZX9R? 😂. After further looking at the video, I understood it's a Ford engine running on ZX9r carbs.
@@joeljohnson3676 All I can do is applogise if you felt mislead by the title. Thanks for your feedback 👍
@@davidgreen7841there's no need for an apology! We're both mechanically inclined! And then again, I had been searching to adapt fuel injection to my ZX9r. Now that I've seen and understood what you're doing, all is good! Keep up the good work. Amazing!
Good to see you back on it David, and great progress having the engine running. I’ll look forward to more videos 👍
Sounds nice
Thank you. It does sound good but recording things on a phone never really does it justice really.
Hi, information like this is invaluable! I have a question, I have a Duratec in a mk1 and I’ve acquired a six dial dash, I want to keep all the original Gauges, but I’m wondering how you would hook up a mechanical oil pump pump gauge to the electric oil pressure switch of a Duratec. I was thinking about possibly drilling out the centre of the electric pressure switch and tapping a thread into it to put a mechanical sender unit in there. Do you think that would be acceptable or is there another way? I don’t want to lose any of the original Gauges.
Hold that thought. The next video will explain that one 👍
Looking like a good set up David
heyy david. me and my dad started to work on our ford escort mk1 and we want to remove our dashboard to get it rewrap. Can you please tell me the locations of screws because we don't want to ruin the already ruined dashboard
Hi, If your looking at the crash pad and im assuming its a original item then there should be 3 bolts that go through the metal dash and nuts that need to be undone. Mine wasnt fixed on that great so it was only 2. From memory one is where the dials are and the others are located close to the vents and in front of the passenger seat. If your removing the metal dash then that takes a bit more effort but i will be covering that in a video.
@@davidgreen7841 thanks man, i also did some research and i found the way to remove the outer layer
Happy new year David nice to see some videos that not been done before 😊
Happy New Year to you too 👍

cheers.
great to see your updates date, i got your notification, brilliant dave. hope you get your dream soon, when all is done.
Well done David I am looking forward to seeing the escort being done and remember not all of us are born welders / mechanics as long as your happy with it it doesn’t matter what everyone else says or thinks it’s your car your project
What speedo are you going use? I’m using the same gear box with a Vauxhall engine in a mk1
The easy option would be to use a GPS Speedo. Speedhut do a nice custom GPS range. I also like the racetech gauges and use a hub mounted sensor to pickup the correct speed.
@@davidgreen7841 thanks I’ll check them out 👍
Good video mate, seems to take forever drilling out spot welds, but very satisfying when all put and cleaned up. Mines on stop for a sec, got the dreaded covid 🤢.
Hi Dave, Hope your on the mend soon pal. Funny thing with the spot welds is some panels only have a few in them and another shell will have loads in the same places.
Great video David your right about the dashboard rot caused by the windscreen rubber I worked in Fords Halewood where they built the escorts and I remember they used to seal around the outside and inside edge of the outside windscreen but I am sure at times when the windscreen was replaced they never bothered resealed around it and I think this is where the water got behind the rubber and rotted the metal away
Yeah mine has suffered badly and the repairs were not the best but they have saved the car over the years.
love the sound of the 4age 20v
like the video mate
thanks
Hello David, I was wanting to have a chat with you about your other video regarding modern ECU with old Rev counters. It wouldn’t allow me to contact you on that video. What’s the best way of having a conversation with you?? Even written conversation would be fine. Thanks 👍
Hi Craig, Congratulations on getting the Escort up and running it looks superb. Thats no problem at all. My email address is twincamracingdevelopments@gmail.com If your send me your number on there i will give you a call if thats ok? Well done again 👍 David
hi Dave. i just tried to save your rev counter vid but youtube says i cant because its made for kids. i tried to comment on the vid but comments are turned off.
Hi David, very similar to my project, yours will run nice with the ST170 and RX8 box, I’m running that in a pop, goes like stink😁. Keep up the good work keeping these old girls on the road. For the prop, there is a company close to where I live called BAR props of Neath, made one for my pop from scratch, for less than £150, balanced. All the best with it pal, looking forward to swapping ideas and tips with you.
Interested to get in touch regarding Rev counter mod. Have you got an email?
Hi Tom, Yes it's twincamracingdevelopments@gmail.com
Nice to see David Love the project, you definitely have your work cut out.Hope you can complete for prom, you did not say how long you have?,would be nice to take dad out for a spin also Now a subscriber good luck look forward to the content. Great to see a man of colour !!!
Hi, Thankyou for kind comments. My Daughter is 10 so we have some time and yes I would love to take my Dad for a spin in it when it's done. Thanks for subscribing and hope the content is of use 👍
I've had my escort many years now, just recently got the ball rolling of starting to get things done on it. It needs lots of welding, Painting and plenty of parts. I managed to get a st170 engine. Keep the videos coming.
Sounds very much like my project then. Thanks for watching
Im doing the same build shortly so im looking forward to the next video for tips
No problem. Thanks for watching.
This is the least problem engine on earth. Most reliable in my opinion.
Hi, I agree it's certainly up there on reliability. Pure engine sound too 😊
I fitted these to mine david for the same reasons. Heavy duty and half the price and they fit great. You mentioned the only downside which is the fact they are bigger where they join the center section. I just made a sleeve to fit round the center chassis section, then fitted these over the sleeves, loads of spot / plug welds and they were perfect 👍
Does the transmission Tunnel require any mods to fit an RX8 box into a tunnel thats had a type 9 5 speed previously fitted David???
Hi Craig, Yes it's going to be a struggle to fit in a standard tunnel especially if your keeping it hydraulic due to the location of the slave cylinder. As I'm putting a new floor in, I have opted for the magnum auto tunnel which is huge but looks stock. The length of the box and the position of the gear lever compared to a type 9 is very close but it's wider and the bellhousing is bigger.
David Green Yeah i did think it looked much bigger than a type 9. Just wondered if it was a future change but i don’t want to change my tunnel now the cars painted. Look forward to seeing your build progress.
@@davidgreen7841 Where did u get the bell housing adapter
i owned it wish i didnt sell it, as i wouldnt of transplanted the full running gear into another better shell.

How you doing pal? Any more escorts in the pipeline.
@@davidgreen7841 a up Dave, i have not stopped wondering how you are also doing in the classic car world, i have owned another MK2 since selling the gold one to which i regret, this one i have is very nice after a bit of work, its just a standard MK2 1600 Ghia 1976, tax exempt, it goes fantastic but no where near the buzzing power of the one you did, i saved all your videos t hard drive just to remember it. i will txt ya.
i owned it wish i didnt sell it, as i wouldnt of transplanted the full running gear into another better shell.
How did you go mounting the engine?
hey im guessing since you used the type 9 gearbox you didnt have to modify the tunnel. was the conversion very hard?
Hi, Only tunnel modifications were to move the hole 2 inches or so back. The type 9 just about fits the stock tunnel but I was doing it again I would use a magnum large auto tunnel which wasn't available then. I'm using a auto tunnel for my current project.
Hey man, nice conversion!
Thank you
scrap that I remember it was for sale in rugeley, loved the build in retroford mag :) top car!
is this the brown four door mk2? was on ebay recently
Sounds sweet!
