    I was born in Portsmouth NH and raised in York Maine Graduated from York High in 1977.. the cost of living in my home town has driven most of us away who were so fortunate to grow up there. Extremely sad to see many natives driven out by the cost of taxes. My parents left the area upon retirement due to the unbearable increase in taxes. The cost of living is ginormous! Also to get to York you must travel the I 95 N corridor....a drivers nightmare on the summer. And I 95A to get around York in the summer is a frustrating mess. Most stores in York cater to the summer tourists and prices go sky high for basic needs...gas, milk, water and electricity. Such a beautiful area that the average Joe can barely afford to visit ( check out hotel rates) let alone live there. Another disadvantage are the true natives who have managed to hold on to their way of lives and still live there, don't really appreciate the influx of new dwellers and you will be made well aware of this in their attitudes towards you.

    I lived in Portsmouth for about 15 years until the traffic and all the new properties going up drove me out. It used to be fun before it was Taurus season and all year in rush-hour all day. But still fun to visit now that we live out in the woods in crave culture all the time. And by the“woods” I mean the Raymond Epping Lee area. A cultural dead zone if I ever saw one. Well I do miss living in Portsmouth. I do not regret moving because of all the traffic we have now everywhere. Also, you are 100% accurate with the tearing up of side streets. Construction seems perpetual.

    Thank you Cam for another great video. I can relate to life in a tourist hot spot as we live near Pigeon Forge, Tennessee and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The traffic does get old after a while. I would love to convince my wife and son to move to New Hampshire or Maine, but so far they are not on board. There is a question about the area that I have. How welcoming is the residents of people from here in East Tennessee moving into their towns? We keep hearing about the Northeast Shield that is tough to break through. I’m wanting to make the move to New Hampshire or Maine because of how life is there. I’m not wanting to move there to make it like East Tennessee. I love the small townships around the area.

There are plenty of jobs for people willing to work and some of the negatives you mentioned a person will find in any other state. We just ask people moving here to not try to change the state into the state you are escaping from.

    Southern NH and southern Maine are very similar in that they are both really northern Massachusetts. That’s where all our states money is and where it all goes. “We did just fine before you got here and we’ll be fine after you leave.” A quote to some Connecticut folks from my dad from deep inland Maine.

    Loved living in NH. Nice People, Clean Air, Rural living at it's finest. My late ex-wife and I had a nice home on a nice wooded lot. Wished the house was a little larger, but it was what we could afford. Only move out because wife's grandkids were in SC (definitely DON'T move there). Did the cost/benefit analysis for us before moving there in 2002. For us it was a savings of just of $12,000 a year to move north from SE Mass to SE NH. Not sure how much longer could have lived there--the winters are cold and they get plenty of snow. Those are two things that I really don't like, but there's no changing it either. Accepted it and dealt with while we were there. In a great job now in MA, but would move back, all things being right for me.

    So you grew up here, only for the first 20 yrs or so, in what sounds like the city area, a city boy, then moved on, but yet you think you know it all, and post this video, completely underrating the entire state of NH. 🤔 If the only thing that stood out to you, throughout the entire state, in your 20 years, was the old man on the mountain?? Then you need to get a life. Besides up there in Maine. Maybe it's time you should actually revisit your grassroots and actually see it with a fresh pair of eyes and perspective. Because you obviously didn't get it the first time around.

  • @user-lc3co1ki3j
    @user-lc3co1ki3j 3 дня назад

    I'm from the region, a true New England native, and while I can't speak for your experience, I feel your underrating NH. I live in southern NH, off the grid, and loving it. NH has MUCH to offer outside and away from more Metropolitan areas or the cities. I grew up in the boondocks, and I still live in the boondocks. It's a whole different world from your city lifestyle and perspective. Understand that. What you choose to underrate, I consider to be God's country. I think before posting a video like this, you would have had to experience ALL of NH, away from the city life, and not just cherry pick it. This video does no justice at all for the state of NH, as a whole, and is what I consider to be misinformation led by only one person's point of view, which happens to be a poor example. I'm 55 year old, NE native, born and raised here. You have it all wrong kid.

  • @pamelajaye
    @pamelajaye 3 дня назад

    Yeah, I'm from Boston. I think we considered New Hampshire inexpensive. Actually one of my best friends jobs and possibly most of her company picked themselves up and moved themselves to New Hampshire. She got a different job. But now she lives in New Hampshire. Also the last 13 years I lived in Salem. So tourists? Well they weren't quite as bad then. Actually I went on Google maps around the end of October and I turned on the traffic and I looked at the route between my old apartment and the grocery store that I usually went to which was just into swampscott. Salem wasn't good No problem getting to it's probably still a stop & shop. They did move it across the street. I just mentioned that because I heard this man in an article Who ran out of garbage bags and was really considering whether or not he wanted to go out and buy some more. It doesn't matter though. I couldn't live there after my landlady sold her house and I moved in with my mother in Florida. I don't know what the deal is with the power going out for long periods of time because back in the olden days - I remember when I was 18 - we had an ice storm. On mother's Day. I guess the power did go out in some places but my parents said not in Westwood. I was in the hospital in Norwood so the ventilator kept working that was good. And maybe a week later it was 90°. Really weird weather that spring but spring can be like that. But even in the blizzard of 78 our power never went out. Only in the blackout of 65. I'm going to assume you weren't alive in 65. Took out the whole Northeast. It was pretty famous. The one in 77 or 78 in New York I think it took out a big area but not us. And the one in 2003 that took out parts of Canada and I think most of Massachusetts, my friend in Waltham said nope. Her power was on. I also lived in Waltham but that was in 84 through 86. Meanwhile down here in Florida we had a tropical storm that wasn't even a hurricane that took out our power for 4 days in 2004 and a hurricane that took out our power for 3 days in 2017 and the last hurricane that we really thought was going to kill us but took a turn It was down a few blocks from my house where the power was out. Oh and also at the same time a week or two later in 2004, a kamikaze squirrel took out the power in my office for 4 days. We had some sockets that were working and others which were not. The computers worked the air conditioning didn't it was late September probably or possibly October it was super hot still. I mean for the first day it was nice because I wasn't freezing to death at my desk but then it was hot. So parts of 8 days. Not fun. And there were some other things. But I didn't get a car until I was 40. Which definitely would have been a problem in New Hampshire. It was a problem in Salem. I worked in billerica for like 2 weeks and it was a really long commute and it was in December. The snow wasn't bad but honestly it was pretty much my first experience driving it. And I would just come home and go to bed. My friend called me on the phone and the next morning I asked her why she didn't call me. She said we had a conversation. And I said really what did I say? You said I hate billerica! Now as it turns out I have a cousin who lives in billerica. But I've never met her. I think that I've only known her now for several years somewhere between 5 and 9, I have totally lost track. I did not discover her until my uncle died. And he managed to die before my aunt died. Making my aunt the last surviving member of my mother's family. It was really close there for a while. Big Irish Catholic family. But those are my two experiences with billerica. That and the DJs on the radio who came to the area and couldn't pronounce it or Haverhill. I never noticed that we have a strange way of pronouncing Peabody until I talk to some friends in California. Anyway enjoy your summer. It's not really in my plans to move to New Hampshire but my parents did have a cottage there when I was a baby. It was in Raymond I think. Not a place I've really heard of. And I did have one experience at Bear Brook State Park when we were camping where some chipmunks came and sat in my lap. That was so unusual that my father pulled out the camera and actually took pictures with 1968 film. Since I'm sure you were alive then either taking pictures was a rarity back in 1968. But having chipmunks sit in your lap - that was something that did not happen in my backyard. The squirrels would come eat out of my hands but the chipmunks were skittish and the bunny was even worse. I miss having squirrels eat out of my hands. But now I have ducks.

    New Hampshire sucks!! 35 years ago I moved here. It was beautiful! Now it's a dump. It's just a part of Massachusetts now. Homelessness, poverty, to many tourists who have effectively ruined all the wild places. It's out of control. And yes, you better have lots of money too, or you'll find yourself living in a tent in and around Concord. It's so sad. I can't wait to get out of here.
